This was an amazing experience. Martin our tour guide was so helpful, knowledgeable’ and great company. It was a long trip from Zurich, but was well worth it for the views.

Itinerary
Your tour starts with the train ride from Zürich to Visp (two hours).
On your train journey you'll pass by Bern. It is called the "Federal City" and functions as the capital of Switzerland. As the seat of the city and large parts of the cantonal and federal administration, it is the largest center of public administration in the country
You'll pass by Lake Thun, a fjord lake in the Bernese Oberland on the northern edge of the Alps.
Your train journey continues through the Lötschberg Base Tunnel, a 34.6-kilometre-long railway tunnel that crosses under the northern Alpine chain at the Lötschberg between Frutigen in the Bernese Oberland (Canton of Bern, Switzerland) and Raron (Canton of Valais, Switzerland) and was put into operation in 2007. This base tunnel is part of the Lötschberg-Simplon axis of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA), which runs from Basel via Bern-Thun-Spiez to the Lötschberg and on via Brig-Simplon-Domodossola to Milan and Novara-Genoa, and next to the one running parallel Gotthard axis forms a second route for the transalpine rail freight traffic of the European Corridor (Rotterdam-Genoa).
Visp is a municipality in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is located at the entrance to the Vispertal at the mouth of the Vispa in the Rotten. The small town is the capital and largest municipality in the district of Visp. Here you get off the intercity train and change direct onto the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Railway. The cogwheel train takes you within 55 minutes to Zermatt
Walk through the old part of the alpine village of Zermatt with it's typical wooden houses.
Visit the viewpoint for the typical Zermatt village picture to the Mt. Matterhorn
The graveyard shows you, how closed the success to climb Mt. Matterhorn and the risks are. It's part of the history of Zermatt, that accidents on high alpine climbing happens.
The hotel Monte Rosa is where the first ascent to Mt. Matterhorn startet. Several information about the first ascent and it's historical tragedy are available here.
On a 30 minutes cogwheel train ride you get up to 10000ft altitude. In this high alpine area, beautiful views to Mt. Matterhorn and the glaciers await you. Mt. Gornergrat is in all year snow.
The Gornergrat is a mountain ridge at an altitude of 3135 m above sea level. M. It is located about three kilometers east of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Gornergrat is located between the Gorner Glacier and the Findel Glacier and offers views of more than 20 four-thousanders, including Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and the Liskamm. The Gornergratbahn runs from Zermatt (1620 m above sea level) to the Gornergrat, overcoming an altitude difference of almost 1500 metres. At the terminus (3089 m above sea level) on the southwestern tip of the ridge is the Kulmhotel, which is the highest mountain hotel in Switzerland. Visit the scenic viewpoint with the all year snow or have a look at the multi-media experience world, which shows the Matterhorn and its surrounding alpine world in all dimensions, will fascinate both young and old and is even a great place to visit on the Gornergrat when the weather is not so good.
After returning from Gornergrat, your travel back to Zürich will take place (3 hours). You trave on the same way back as you arrived in the morning.

Enzo our guide was fantastic very friendly and helpful. By the end of the day we felt that we had known him for years. What we saw was fantastic but the price of $2000+ was way over the costs of our collective tickets had we just bought them on our own. Would not recommend paying so much or doing a similar trip in future. This is absolutely no reflection on our guide
It's a great opportunity to see Zermatt. Seeing the Matterhorn depends on the weather. When we arrived it was partially obscured, but the clouds passed and we got a great view. Zermatt is a charming Swiss town. Our guide was excellent! He did a great job managing the trains and helping us with crowed train platforms. You will spend a lot of time traveling between Zurich and Zermatt, but we had an incredible experince!
Alex our guide was a little early so we got great seats on first train. Alex guided us to all of the trains with perfect connections! We were very lucky to have perfect weather the entire trip. Nice lunch in Zermatt! Beautiful blue skies to see the Matterhorn and surrounding mountains!
This was a once in a lifetime experience! To see Matterhorn in person is like seeing something that has only been in pictures from afar. Our guide was Rolf…he was incredibly nice and informative. We even sat down for lunch together and enjoyed learning about Swiss culture and Swiss life. It was much more than just seeing Zermatt and Matterhorn. We would highly recommend this experience and especially our time with Rolf.
Enzo Grieco was the best tour guide we have had during our month-long trip across Europe. We move a little slow and he took extra care to keep us on schedule and safe. Where possible Enzo emphasized areas of special interest to us.
It's a long day from Zurich but definitely worth the trip. Our guide Kristoff (sp?) was full of knowledge and absolutely charming. We learned a lot and saw a lot.
Our friendly and knowledgeable guide, Martin, took us on various trains to Zermatt and then to Mt Gornergrat. It’s a long day at 12 hours so bring some entertainment with you.
Delightful small group tour that enabled me to enjoy areas otherwise outside of my reach as a solo traveler
Great day in Zermatt surrounded by the Alps! Even though we faced weather challenges we loved our trip! Emir was a fantastic guide as well!
It was beyond amazing. Zermatt is such a beautiful village. Unforrunately, we didn't get to see the Matterhorn due to fog but it was certainly still worth it. Our tour guide - Enzo - was exceptional. He was so knowledgeable and very sweet. Treated us like we were family - buying us chocolates to try and tailoring the trip to our needs.
Gornergrat views and the Zermatt town is absolutely astounding. Our guide negotiated the 8 or so train connections that day expertly. However, we were, surprisingly, the only two in the group that day, so direct conversation on the 3-4 hour train rides to and from destinations was a large part of the trip. Unfortunately, our views on life didn’t align well. We listened and were polite, but uncomfortable. Being American, we know our country is very unpopular right now, but not one positive thing was said about it during the day and it got a little hard to hear after a while.
The tour was the highlight of my time in Switzerland. Our guild was Erich Schurch. He was informative and very knowledgeable. He was also a wiz at navigating the train system that we traveled on. After our tour Erich actually walked us to our hotel. Great guild.
Enzo our guide was awesome! He spent so much time with us and made it a wonderful trip. We would definitely suggest this trip to others.
From Zurich getting to Zermatt is a big deal, two trains and three hours each way. That said, if the weather is good this is one heck of an experience. Tour guide Martin (sorry if my spelling is incorrect) was fantastic and made life a breeze.
Ulrich is the best guide we have ever had , and we’ve had a few. Met us at the train and was by our side all day …… 3 trains and a gondola we were staring at the Matterhorn… Just an amazing gentleman. Request him and ask about his past career… Fascinating!!
Two city trains and two cog wheel trains to get to the top of Gornergrat and Michael coordinated it all perfectly. He even ran ahead each time we changed trains to make sure we were able to get a good seat. The multiple train rides were worth it when we arrived at our destination…the top of Gornergrat! What breathtaking beauty! The sun was shining so we had a perfect day to see all the peaks including the Matterhorn. Michael took so many great pictures of us. It was like having our own personal photographer with us! Michael suggested we have lunch on the outside terrace. It was 37 degrees Fahrenheit but with the sun shining, it was perfect to sit outside and enjoy our cheese raclette. From the top of Gornergrat we took the cog wheel train back to Zermatt and spent time visiting all the special spots that Michael was familiar with in Zermatt. Such a perfect day! Seeing the Matterhorn allows me to cross one thing off my bucket list. My husband loved the tour as much as I did. The memories and photos we were able to bring home with us will be treasured for years to come. Our thanks to Michael for a marvelous day!!
We were riding on a train to Zermatt - loved it not to be in a car. Especially for the long ride, but it was smooth and comfy. Were walking throug Zermatt and then tourguide took us to a mountain place with breathtaking view to Matterhorn. Over all is was a long day but we had a fantastic guide and we were just four people on the tour.
An unforgettable experience! The scenic train ride alone from Zürich to Zermatt was worth the trip – every moment felt like a postcard. Reaching the Gornergrat was absolutely breathtaking, with views of the Matterhorn. Our guide Mike made everything smooth and enjoyable, sharing interesting facts along the way. A true highlight of my short layover in Switzerland!
This tour was an unforgettable experience! The journey from Zürich to Zermatt was smooth and comfortable, with breathtaking Swiss landscapes along the way. In Zermatt, we explored the charming alpine village before taking the Gornergrat railway up to one of the best viewpoints of the Matterhorn. The views were absolutely stunning. The tour made the experience feel personal and relaxed, and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. . Highly recommended!
Excellent full day trip. Small group experience. Our local tour guide, Ueli, was excellent. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and pleasant. He kept us on schedule without stress. There is a lot to try to fit in in one day. More time in Zermatt would have been nice, but it's already a full long day. There is plenty of time at the Matterhorn to see everything there, including the little chapel, and the museum/interactive indoor experience. Seeing the Matterhorn was on my bucket list and this was a well organized way to do it in one day from Zurich. Recommend this tour.
The Matterhorn is a sight to behold. There is a sense of awe and wonder as you gaze upon it. We were lucky to have a sunny day to see it in all its magnificence. We went in December and at the end of the day, we walked thru Zermatt. It was like being in a Hallmark Christmas movie with the charming village, twinkling lights, and lightly falling snow. Enzo was an awesome guide. He was educational and kind. He helped get a chair for my elderly father who was not able to travel up to the viewing platform at the top of the Gornegrat. He offered to stay with him at the terrace level and encouraged me to go to see Matterhorn from the platform. At the end of the trip he graciously helped navigate us away from the very confusing Zürich HB to the street our hotel was located. 10/10 would go again with Enzo.
Tour was a complete bust. Viator notified us 3 days prior to the trip that they were cancelling (as they hadn’t filled the trip to their financial satisfaction). We rebooked the complete train trips and gondola on our own (without the “guided” tour narrative) for $800 savings (vs their charge of $1400 for 2 people). While they did fully refund the $1400, I’d never recommend depending on this tour to anyone. Very disappointing.
Very poor description of a meeting point and nothing marked. There is no Viator sign it is simply 'Best Of Switzerland Tours" The tour the Zermatt is basically one guide and you are going from one train station to another. In our case it was us and another couple. They call it a small group tour and there is no small bus. It is just chasing trains which you can do yourself. We tried to call to find the exact meeting point and no one answers. They tell you to meet at the Swiss Tourist Office, they have no clue about any Viator. Total waste of money! Not worth it at all! Alex
While I knew we might not be able to see Matterhorn because the weather changed ver quickly, I was hoping the trip to be informative with tour guide and quite sometime at the Zermatt village and on top of gorngrat. However, the whole trip was literally just train transfers where we spent almost 4 hour each way on the train ( we missed the first train transfer, due to the poor booking schedule where there was literally like a 2 min transfer and because the first train was delayed, we missed the second one and had to wait for another 30 mins). On the train ride, there was barely any talk from the tour guide and he was literally there to remind us when to get off the train and where to go for the next transfer. We could have done exactly the same thing ourselves. While we were at Zermatt, we had time for a petty big Italian lunch where the tour guide took us there. However, we didn’t have any time in the village where my friend and I finished the lunch 10 mins earlier than other folks and walked a tiny bit in the village for some photos. After the cogwheel train up the gorngrat, we spent only like 30 mins there, it was barely enough time to take some photos, ran to the bathroom etc. Then we came down with the same train and spent less than 30 mins in the village before we caught the train back already. It was like 3:30pm when we headed back. I don’t know why we needed to head back so early where there were much later trains till like 6-7pm. I checked the Matterhorn view camera, the mountain showed up closer to 6pm. I wasn’t even gonna complain we didn’t see Matterhorn at all because of the weather. However, this whole trip was so disappointing with such long train ride which was completely not mentioned in the itinerary and we didn’t visit any of the places in Zermatt like cemetery, view point bridge etc mentioned in the itinerary. The trip cost almost 700 dollars per person where the train ticket was at most 350. This was just ridiculous to pay such a high price for such poor experience especially it was completely not the same in the itinerary.
It was a great experience. Our tour guide was very quick and very expert. The tour is expensive but I had great time . I just wished we had more time in the village.
Tour Guide Emil's ability to share info in concise terms allowed one to appreciate all aspects of the tour. He shared his knowledge base readily and answered all questions in depth. As for the trip itself, it was great Emil knew how to handle all various types of transportation allowing for the smooth operation of the excursion. As for seeing the Matterhorn. - a dream come true!
We got so incredibly lucky—the weather forecast wasn’t great, but we had sun and a clear view of the Matterhorn right up until it was almost time to leave, when the clouds rolled in. Our tour guide, Emil, was so kind, friendly, and complimentary toward my son and me. It was so nice having a smaller tour and a more personalized experience. And having a clear view of the Matterhorn was stunning, breathtaking, awesome, incredible….something I am sure my son and I will never forget.
Matterhorn was amazing. Tour guide helps you navigate the trains/bus (part of the train offline due to flood), which was helpful to my family.
too much travel time for a one day adventure. Guide told us very little. He just merely got us on and off trains and busses.
The guide, Andy, was very knowledgeable and personable. The transportation was fantastic and we were very impressed with the infrastructure at the top. The views were incredible!
A fabulous but tiring day to the mountains. Although the Matterhorn decided to hide herself under cloud the mountain scene was still beautiful. Annie our guide led us through the many railway stations to enable stress free transfers. We could not have done this on our own.
The Matterhorn is spectacular when viewed from all angles. No wonder it is in most climbers’ bucket list. Special thanks to our guide, Enzo who provided much cultural info, the way of life in Switzerland which makes the journey to see Zermatt and the Matterhorn more interesting. Trip is relax and we enjoyed the company of fellow travellers in the group too.
Ani, thankyou for a great day. The weather was on our side which made beautiful photos. Ani made the changing of trains easy and we were so lucky to get seats.
We enjoyed our day but didn’t feel the small group experience justified the very high price tag. The area is lovely and fun to explore. Our guide was very nice.
DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!! I booked this excursion through chase travel for March 15 @8:15am. It was our last day in Zurich and they completely no-showed and did not send or provide any notice of cancellation!! Now it’s too late to book another trip and we are left with no excursion on our last day in Switzerland. I read another review which stated the same experience that we just had. I called Chase and informed them to remove this company from their website and not to do business with a company that doesn’t give the courtesy of letting the customer know they aren’t going to show up!! I tried calling them multiple times and they won’t even answer the phone number provided. Just a terrible disorganized company.
Had a beautiful day with our guide Ani. Such a pleasure being around and very knowledgeable about the area. Was better being in a small group as it takes time to get there and becomes more personal. Ani looks after her guests like family doesn’t leave anyone behind. Amazing day!!!!!!
Zermatt has become a rip off. A simple meal.gncchi, 62 franks. Especially the cost of the season pass is ridiculous.. The price/fun ratio is not here anymore. Still a beautiful place, if you don´care about money, but crowded. I would suggets, go to Cervinia and have a look at Zermatt.
We had an excellent day with Uli. He met us on time and promptly got us on our way. Uli helped us navigate the train changes and shared information with us on some of the sites along the way. Once we got up to the Matterhorn viewing area is was patient and encouraging as we waited for the stubborn clouds to clear to get the best view. When we returned to Zermatt he guided us to some of the best shops and shared some of the history of Zermatt with us. It was a great tour and a great way to see truly breathtaking views!
Enjoyed the train adventure, 8 minute train changes were intimidating to new riders. Liked the cog wheel train. Sadly we were unable to see the Matterhorn due to fog/snow. Guide Roman was informative, personable and we enjoyed great conversatons.
She Madea Wonderfuul experience of our trip. Awesome view of the Alps, incredible cog wheel train ride up de mountain and the guide was kind, knowledgeable and super helpful and patient and all was perfect.
The best guide and the best tour. We cannot thank enough for all the help and the lovely trip!!! I loved every little bit of it!
The guide was personable, knowledgeable and friendly, we just think we didn’t quite get what we paid for. For about $1,300US for an all day (about 11 hours) we were supposed to be in Zermatt for a two hour tour and we barely had 30 minutes to eat, shop etc., we were to see and pay respects at the Mountaineers cemetery where climbers of the Matterhorn are buried, never saw it. Bottom line, it was an 11 hour train extravaganza (changing trains several times) to see the Matterhorn. Sorry, it was just average in my opinion.
Fantastic Day trip ! Fast paced and full of sights … we enjoyed our day and found a spot we’d love to come in the future for hiking. The weather was perfect and the views pristine. Eric was very knowledge and we enjoyed his company. Recommend!
Gr8 support by tour guide he really knew his stuff which carried which side of train etc to be in for best view or access
Had a great time to zermatt and Mount Matterhorn with my daughters. Our guide Martin was the best guide ever , showed us all the places well . The train rides were amazing.
Loved the many trains we took which enabled me to see the courntryside. It was a clear day so could see the Matterhorn. The ZOOM presentation was good to see the Matterhorn at different seasons.
Martin was a fantastic guide and what a wonderful experience! I highly recommend this day trip from Zurich.
The views of Switzerland are stunning. The trip to Zermatt and the Matterhorn are breathtaking. We enjoyed all the modes of transportation as each leg of the journey brought more beauty. Sadly we were unable to see the Matterhorn because of cloud cover. We were also basically rained out in Zermatt. Our tour guide Abraham made sure we made all our train connections. All in all though I didn’t think this tour was worth the $500 plus per person. I think the Jungfraugh Top of the World tour was infinitely better and $200 less expensive.
Great tour of the Matterhorn and Zermatt. Sean was a great guide. He went above and beyond. It was a long day, so come prepared!!
