Ahmed our guide was wonderful! He picked us up from our hotel and stayed with us all day, explaining and telling us about different things. I learned SO much about Zanzibar from him. He walked with us through Prison island and was always ready to take a photo of us. The boat trip itself was also great, and the whole thing was really private. It is more of a rugged vibe than a super luxury yacht, but it was exactly what we were looking for. And the lunch in the sandbar with lobster was fantastic. It was a wonderful trip - thank you!

Itinerary
Begin your boat journey toward the islands while enjoying panoramic views of the Stone Town waterfront. As you sail out, you will pass neighboring islets like Snake Island and see famous historic landmarks from the water, including the Old Fort, Forodhani Park, the House of Wonders, the Sultan's Palace, the Old Customs House, the Old Dispensary, and the busy Zanzibar Port.
Your visit begins at the 1893 Prison Ruins. Built as a jail, the complex became a quarantine station following disease outbreaks. Today, you can explore the restored remains, admire carved Zanzibar doors, and visit the museum, bookstore, boutique, and bar. Right next door sits the historic stone dock, perfect for photos. As you walk the pathways, look for peacocks and dik-dik antelopes roaming freely. You will also see the historic European Bungalows from the outside, currently being converted into a private hotel reserved strictly for overnight guests. Next, enter the sanctuary to interact with the famous Aldabra Giant Tortoises, gifted from the Seychelles. Learn their history and take photos before passing Mathews' Restaurant—the restored residence of Sir Lloyd Mathews, Zanzibar's first Prime Minister—on your way to the boat.
Next, take a short boat ride to Nakupenda Sandbank, which means "I love you" in Swahili. This breathtaking natural sandbank in the ocean is one of Zanzibar's most famous beach spots. Enjoy your time swimming in the warm, crystal-clear turquoise waters, resting under the shade, sunbathing on the soft white sand, and capturing unforgettable tropical photos. While you relax, our team prepares a fresh, delicious buffet lunch right on the beach—featuring your choice of local seafood or vegetarian dishes. You will also enjoy a fresh tropical fruit platter with pineapple, watermelon, and fresh coconut, accompanied by unlimited bottled water and soft drinks served right on the sand.
On the boat ride back to Stone Town, enjoy scenic coastal views of the State House, Mnazi Mmoja Referral Hospital, sports grounds, and local fishing beaches lined with traditional wooden boats before your transfer takes you safely to your hotel.

It was an amazing experience with them, especially our guide Ahmed who was very nice and explained everything in detail. He also accomodated our dietary preferences, as we are vegetarian and the lunch provided was delicious.
Amazing scenery, awesome fresh seafood. Considerate tour guides and drivers. The boat rides to and from the islands are small old boats so try to pack minimally.
Hello everyone I'm Ishak_tour_guide from zanzibar /TANZANIA I'm basic zanzibar. You are welcome to zanzibar Zanzibar experience
My husband and I had a beautiful time with the best tour guide, Selma! The prison island was cool, the sandbank was beautiful and the lunch was delicious! The only thing is, if you get sea sick, I would not recommend! The boat ride can be very rocky! Overall, amazing excursion!
Its the memory The Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island which is located in the western part of Zanzibar Island, just off Stone Town. It takes around 25 minutes by local boat riding from the Stone Town beach. The island’s main attraction is the popular Giant Tortoises, who can live up to 200 years. In this tour, you will get a chance to explore and learn the history of these beautiful creatures and also about Prison Island itself. You will be with our expert local tour guide who will be explaining each area of interest. Apart from being a place where you can go to see the Giant Tortoises, it also is a perfect destination to do swimming, & Relaxing on the beach. Therefore after all information about the Island, then you will have time for swimming & relaxing on the beach. which lasts till now.
The lunch was really good! They were flexible on times which made it easy. We highly recommend. Got us from hotel
A great experience of Prison Island and Nakupenda Sandbar with Ahmed from Sultan Tours. His so knowledgeable and hospitable. Feel free to ask him anything.
My family did love this trip, we had an amazing time at both places, Prison Island and Nakupenda Sandbar. Also the lunch at Nakupenda was great combinations of seafoods, if you will have Snorkeling mask, please bring it as there is a little reef where you can snorkel and enjoy the beauty of underwater.
There was a change in our tour guide at the last minute and Abuu arrived at our hotel for pickup at 9:30 AM. It was raining in Stone Town that morning and he asked if we wanted to wait. But we forged ahead to the docks and waited briefly for the food and fuel to be loaded on the boat. As soon as we left the harbor, the rain stopped and Abuu started telling us about all the islands in the area. Even though he was very young, Abu knew a lot about Prison Island and took us to see a lot of big tortoises! But the highlight of the trip was Nakupenda Sandbank. By that time, the sun came out, we took amazing photos, and swam in the clear blue water. After an hour, we were invited to a seafood feast. The lobster, prawns, and octopus were excellent; and so were the chips (fries)! We stuffed ourselves so full that we didn't even get to the fruit platter. Then the rains came back in at 3 PM and they took us back a little early to Stone Town. Sultan Tours really came through this time -- we highly suggest their services when booking this tour
We had an amazing day visiting Prison Island and Nakupenda. It was wonderful seeing the giant tortoises and the peacocks roaming around on the island and lunch on Nakupenda was delicious. Would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Zanzibar.
Sultan tours belongs to Ahmed. The company is very professional! All guides are very kind and fun! They will make everything to make you happy! You can book your your tour for sure!!
Amazing trip to Prison Island with a guided tour and meeting the giant tortoises, feeding them. Then off to Nakupenda beach, a beautiful strip of sand in the ocean. Our crew was serving fruit and later a tray with freshly grilled lobster, octopus, prawns, fish and more. Very nice to swim around in the waters. And a special thanks to our crew, most welcoming and friendly guys!
Ahmed was very kind and accomodating. The hotel pick-up and drop off went smoothly. It's a nice experience to do while in Stone town.
The trip was nice and well organized from pickup to the end and everything was private (just me and my girl). We enjoyed spending time with Giant Tortoise at Prison Island and later had a great Seafood buffet at one of the beautiful Sandbanks that we ever see. We highly recommend this trip.
What such a beautiful day in Zanzibar, everything was perfectly organized and on time. We did love it so much. The seafood was so fresh and taste so delicious.
Me and my mum booked this tour on our last day in Stone Town. We have been met by a guide at 9 am in our hotel, but unfortunately it was a thunderstorm with torrential rain. We have asked the guide what to do, and got back that let’s wait for an hour - the rain will stop. At 10am the rain hasn’t stopped and we have been told to wait for 1 more hour. At 11 am it was still raining with the whole sky grey, I asked what’s the plan? As the sandbank would disappear soon due to the tide coming in. No answer was given and then the owner Ahmed called and I asked if it is possible to get the refund for the trip due to poor weather conditions. On the phone Ahmed said that he would refund all money and I agreed to it. Later in the evening I texted him and he said he wouldn’t refund anything. He said via tour is having 25% (why has via tour charged me for the tour that hasn’t happened??) and then 40% goes on food which was bought - but they haven’t even offered us to give this food back - instead they kept it all and lied that they will refund money. In summary, don’t trust this operator, as they lie to you and don’t care about customer experience. There are a lot of nice companies in Zanzibar, which you can book the tour with instead for better value.
Nice trip, everything was professionally organised, we really enjoyed the trip. The seafood was looking good and so delicious.
On time pickup from our Hotel in Stone Town by our guide Abdallah. He was so knowledgeable and informative, he explained to us all information about the Prison Island and then later we went to the Sandbank. The Sandbank was so beautiful, with the calmest and cleanest water that we ever seen. Also the food was perfect amazing, Lobster was our favorite and we had many of them. This was our favorite trip that we had in Zanzibar and Ahmed did spiced it up with great communication and arrangements.
Me and my friends did book this tour directly on The Sultan Tours website, and it was so great. Prison Island was great; the giant tortoises, dik-diks and the learning the History. After Prison Island we went to the Paradise (Nakupenda Sand Bank), it was so lovely, we had best seafood buffet and it was a best place to feel relaxing. I was the best. Also our guide did take us around stone-town without additional charges. Ahmed did arrange everything perfectly and he got the best team.
Ahmed and the team was so nice and organized everything perfectly. I had great time learning the history at Prison Island and enjoy a great beach at Nakupenda with a great food and good perople arround you. I highly recommend the tour.
It was an amazing experience, Me and my gf we had enjoyed and have alot of best moments together on this trip. The prison Island tour was great we learn alot about tortoise and the History of the Island, and we did see Dik-diks too. Nakupenda beach was so memorable, the food was more than perfect we eat alot and alot of food was still remain, there were alot of fruits, bottle of waters, Sodas, and sea food buffet (lot of fresh seafood with fries). Thanks to Ahmed and The Sultan tours team for the special and amazing day. I do highly recommend them for all your trips in Zanzibar.
A great day! After reading many reviews I feared the crowd but no! Everything was perfect! Prison island is top and the turtles are so amazing. What about nakupenda? A paradise .. and a top lunch prepared by the crew on the beach! Many thanks to amp and his brother! Thanks to Ahmed our prison island guide for his kindness and availability
One of the best tours of the trip. Feeding the turtles on Prison Island was amazing. Then we arrived early in Nakupenda and my husband and I had the sandbank just for us before the other boats arrived. Beautiful place! The seafood lunch was also sensational.
