About Activity
Explore the haunting beauty and layered history of Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, just off the coast of Zanzibar. A short boat ride from Stone Town reveals turquoise waters and cooling sea breezes before arrival at this evocative islet. Once used for rebellious slaves and later as a yellow fever quarantine station, the island now serves as a sanctuary for giant Aldabra tortoises, some over 100 years old. Wander among the atmospheric prison ruins as a knowledgeable guide brings the island’s past to life. After exploring, enjoy time at the beach or snorkel in the surrounding clear waters, where vibrant coral reefs and marine life offer a serene contrast to the island’s poignant history. Boat transfers to and from the island may be shared. (Private road transfers are included from Stone Town and West Coast Hotels, a supplement will apply for other areas).
