The tours was very interesting and the guide was very good. The Cenote was wonderful , but do not go here unless you drive yourself or have another form of reliable transportation. The tour starts and stops at the Hacienda and uber can only be booked from Merida, not back. Transportation is not a service provided by the facility.

We had a wonderful time at the Hacienda. It is in an extremely beautiful area with delicious food and comfortable accommodation. We were truly spoilt during our stay. It is a good location for visiting the Uxmal ruins and Merida. The pool was lovely and spacious. We had an interesting tour about the history of the Hacienda ending with a horse drawn carriage ride and lovely dip in a cenote. The staff were extremely helpful, I left my I Pad in my room and they arranged for it to be sent by DHL to our next accommodation, a special shout out to the manager Ivan who sorted out all the logistics.
This was a quaint, fun, informative experience with a cool down at the end. Everyone enjoyed the entire experience!
We attended the full tour with transportation, hacienda visit and henequen fiber making observation, cenote visit, and a 4-course meal. We recommend booking directly through their website and avoid impersonators. Everything was amazing!! The bus provided for transportation was super clean and comfortable, and the driver was very friendly. The tour guide at the hacienda was very engaging and enthusiastic about the art of henequen. We were fascinated by the technique shown to us step by step by the local workers, and how the original machines from 20th century are still operating. We were also treated to a refreshing glass of tamarind juice along the way. The wonders didn’t end here. We boarded a “truk” - a rail carriage powered by a mule - and had the most mesmerizing ride through agave plantations to the cenote. We were so lucky to be the only ones in the cenote that day, and there was a safe guard on premises to look out for us while we swim. There were also bathrooms and changing rooms, as well as a little makeshift bar where we had a mezcalita. Finally, we had an amazing 4-course meal of fresh mexican food with friendly service. We cannot recommend this experience enough, it’s definitely a must do experience when in Merida!
This was an incredible journey to the past. Walking that amazing hacienda was astonishing. Learning about the green gold and how the evolution of handcraft moved into manufacturing and eventually a huge global industry. Arriving at Sotuta feels like arriving at a friends house, our tour guide was amazing. Food was great. I recommend jumping into the cenote waters. 5/5 for us
You can only visit the hacienda as part of a booked tour. Found the sisal/henequen production part of the tour fascinating. Beautiful cenote for a welcome swim at the end of the tour was a bonus; bring your swim gear with you on the tour as you can’t easily return for it partway through. Lunch was simple but good. We found the tour guide intensely irritating - rather shouty and full of himself. But others on the tour seemed to like him so perhaps it was just us. We would still recommend a visit, just wish we’d had a different guide.
I have a few comments in regards to the Sotuta de Peon tour we took yesterday. We came in our own vehicle, and we found the way easily until we arrived there, then there were no signs where to go. It would be very easy to have a few signs to show where to park. The tour began almost 30 minutes late, which is ok, this can happen. It was fairly interesting, and we learned quite a lot. Unfortunately, as we speak English, our tour guide was quite difficult for us to understand. She was trying her best, but it was not easy to follow at times. Our biggest complaint is the price we paid for what we got. It was interesting, as I said, but certainly not worth 1040 pesos in our opinion.
Very well done tour. Will never look at a ball of twine the same way again.. Perfect use of three hours with sisal history, authentic old rail cart transport, gorgeous quiet cenote swim to cap it off. Transport to/from Merida challenging if you don't have a car. We ended up negotiating a half day taxi.
I really enjoyed the history, the beauty and peaceful atmosphere, and the people working to make this experience such a pleasant one! The information about the hacienda's henequin plantation, how the fiber was processed and baled, and spun into ropes was very interesting. Our mule powered trip to a cenote was a nice hour's diversion, and the lunch I was served afterwards was fantastic. I'd absolutely recommend this tour, including transportation and lunch, to anyone wanting a unique tour. We left Merida just before 8am, and I was back by 2pm.
We booked the Sisal package, including transport from Merida, the tour and cenote, and lunch. Communication and logistics were excellent and easy, with the staff contacting us the day before to confirm everything. The tour was incredible and comprehensive - our guide was giving the tour in 2.5 languages (by the end, he had added French to the planned Spanish and English), and never made any of us feel forgotten or ignored! The grounds and cenote were absolutely exquisite, and seeing all of the original machinery (still functioning!) was super cool. Will definitely be visiting again next time we're in Merida!
Beautiful location but I felt that the curators haven't done a good job at integrating more current thinking about colonialism and exploitation. It is all 'very pretty' and the negative aspects were only mentioned in passing. Our tour guide came across as very arrogant and not really interested in making the effort to deliver a bilingual tour. However, part of the tour was also a visit to a beautiful cenote. I would say the Sotuta de Peon is definitely worth a visit but also that it's not taking its responsibility seriously to explain the history more critically.
We really enjoyed the tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and humorous. The property is stunning. It gives a good view of that Colonial era. We enjoyed the old machinery that still operates, the demonstration of all aspects of sisel production and especially the mule drawn wagon ride through the foelds to swim in a cenote. At the end we had local snacks served in a pleasant setting. I highly recommend.
It’s an amazing place of history, natural beauty and overall a great experience, including a beautiful Cenote. It’s very close to Mérida (1 hour), so great for flash trips.
Loved this place - really historic and atmospheric - tour of the hacienda was memorable (if you take it you will see why) and pool areas was really nice (if a little short of sun loungers). Food was also surprisingly good and staff were always smiley and friendly. Rooms were a bit tired and probably due a refurb - but that’s not really the point here - this isn’t 5 star luxury - it’s all about the experience. It really is remote so don’t expect any facilities whilst you are here.
Such a Highlight!! And a Must-Go when in Mérida!!! There is an official office close to parque Santa Lucia who sell the tickets and the transport. Everything worked out perfect, the price is for what you get really more than justified. Super interesting history, explained by the guide and showed by the community. A beautiful beautiful Land and the probably must stunning cenote. It’s on the land and basically will there be just the people from your tour which is super private. Big recommendation!!!
The hacienda was very helpful in sorting out transportation from Merida and I had an excellent and accommodating driver. Hacienda itself was beautiful and the guide very informative and entertaining. Loved seeing how the henequen processing worked. Recommend this tour.
Great interesting experience with great guide and good snacks included! Cool bonus having access to a beautiful cenote.
This was the third time I have done this tour of the hacienda over the past eight years. Never before was the group so large (at least 40). The guide, whose name I never caught, was knowledgeable, but spoke ridiculously fast in both English and Spanish. I suspect many in the group -- for whom either of those were not their native tongue -- missed a lot because of his speed and the wide spacial distribution of the group. Also, the hacienda phone message could be better stated in Spanish as to what numbers should be used to reach the reservation office and the TripAdvisor button to change or cancel a reservation doesn't work.
We had such a fabulous time at the stunning Hacienda Sotuta de Peon. Very educational as you are taught the complete history of the sisal industry and the plantation. Our guide Ivan had us all captivated by his stories. Swimming in the cenote was relaxing and a great way to end the tour.
This was a very informative visit. We learned about hacienda culture, production of sisal and other products from the agave plants, as well as the changes it wrought in the Yucatan from the perspective of the Mayan people. I really appreciated this. The area is beautiful and well maintained. We ate a light lunch at the hacienda restaurant, and were given non-alcoholic beverages made from the agave plant. Both were very tasty. A highlight of our visit was a swim in the cenuto at the hacienda. We got there on a mule driven cart along old rails on the hacienda grounds. I was worried about the mules carrying us over-sized tourists, but I think the rails make it less burdensome for the mules.
This was the single best thing I did in my six weeks in Mérida. The history was fascinating, the grounds were stunning. The guide was very informative. The on-site cenote had calm pure water that was a perfect temperature... refreshing, but not cold. Even the food we had was excellent. The whole operation was well managed by friendly people. And we learned so much more than you can just by reading about the period in history when the henniquin boom brought both wealth and slavery to the area.
We booked this through our Carnival Cruise. We arrived at the port and were separated into groups for ATV or Horseback riders and then loaded onto a nice comfy coach for the 1.5 hour ride. We received a history lesson about the Mayans and how Nylon destroyed the rope making business. Then when we got there some of us went horseback riding through the hacienda and some rode ATV's. We rode to the Cenote where we had a beautiful swim. Then we were treated to a mule pulled cart ride to the hacienda and had a delicious mayan snack (3 different tacos) and then toured the hacienda and rope making process. Then loaded back up and headed bak to port while getting in a good nap.
The feeling I felt while on the horse drawn wagon ride to the cenote was ethereal. It just felt magical with the sound of the wagon on tracks, the afternoon light, and the butterflies and moths roaming the agave field. I was at peace. On the way back from the cenote, while on the horse wagon, it started raining ( I went at the end of August during the wet season), which made everything even more beautiful. The cenote was beautiful with clear blue water - much nicer than the Coba cenote, which has a swing and you can dive into it because it is very deep and dark, which was scary for me. I love history and architecture so I enjoyed learning about the Mayans, the Creole family that owned the plantation in Colonial Times, and how Mexican farmers were treated and involved in farming. The hacienda is beautiful. Felipe did a good job in English and Spanish. He also was great at keeping us punctual. I booked my reservation an hour before the tour and appreciated being accommodated. Two people even showed up half an hour into the tour and were guided by the reservation office to where the rest of us were. I and another visitor arrived a few minutes late, and we were guided to the group. It was awesome to see how sisal was made by hand and machines. The demonstrations were great! The appetizers at the restaurant were amazing! Especially the cheese empanada. I would have ordered food, but wanted to make it back to Merida so I could visit at least one museum. So, it’s best to book the earliest tour, so you have time to do other things later.
Our tour guide, Felipe Fuentes, was truly excellent. The tour itself was fascinating, I honestly wasn’t expecting to find it as interesting as I did. Learning about the history of the plantation and the way they make the product out of the plant is made so intriguing by Filipe and the absolutely lovely and clearly very skilled employees working on the plantation. Very authentic and interesting for a wide range of different audiences (children and adults alike). Then we went to the cenote, which was stunning and so relaxing. The water was lovely and cool and it was so quiet and secluded, providing the perfect backdrop for a relax after the tour. Additionally, we were able to get drinks at the cenote, including a delicious homemade margarita. All in all, a fabulous experience that gave a great taste of this part of Mexico.
A fantastic tour with Felipe. He did the tour in English as well as Spanish for us Aussies. We really enjoyed the sisal making tour - very informative and the demonstrations were interesting & interactive so you could really understand the whole process of sisal making and the history behind it . We enjoyed looking around the hacienda and seeing what life was like - it has been kept in beautiful condition. The Mayan house & Mayan lady was a bonus we didn’t expect. So much interesting information. And the cenote is the most beautiful we have been in - crystal clear! We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour tour, and bonus drinks and snacks. Thank you
We visited the hacienda with another family, with children aged 8-11. Our tour guide, Felipe Fuentes, was excellent. He told us the story of life in the haciendas for everyday people and for the rich and powerful. We saw how the henequen fiber was extracted from the agave plants and processed. After the tour, we took a ride to an underground cenote for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water. The cenote is easily accessed by stairs, and well lit inside. There's a little bar at the cenote serving a special tequila. On returning to the hacienda we enjoyed yucatecan appetizers and jamaica at the restaurant. Highly recommend. The pacing of the 3 hours was just right- not too much talking and an hour at the cenote. Charming gift shop selling handicrafts made from henequen (like bags, purses, placemats, earrings) and paletas. Be sure to have cash for tips and drinks at the cenote.
We just visited and really enjoyed the 3 hour tour. I learned a lot about the harvest of fibers from heneken, a type of agave. Felipe was great and shared information about the farm in both Spanish and English. The tour includes a swim in the cenote and we enjoyed an included snack and ordered some additional delicious food. The tour was educational, beautiful, and very enjoyable. All the staff made us feel welcomed. Highly recommend!
This was a horrible experience. We booked the excursion online where it clearly stated to meet at the office and that is where the tour would begin and end. When you get there they tell you no you have to meet at the Hacienda. The people in the office wouldn’t help and Viator who we booked through wouldn’t help either. Waiting to see if we will get a refund. Absolutely terrible experience and horrible customer service. So disappointed as it clearly stated to meet at the office on Calle 50 between Calles 58 and 60 which we did only to be told we can’t help you and won’t take you to the tour.
Our tour guide, Filipe, was great! He spoke both Spanish and English throughout the tour. Very informative and interesting. Nice to learn about the history of the hacienda and about Sisal/Henequen.
My husband & I did a 10 day road trip in the Yucatan, starting from Playa del Carmen. We drove from Celestun to the Hacienda in time for the 11am tour. It was offered in French & Spanish, but I was able to understand enough. The tour seemed pricey but I thought it was worth it. Our group was about 12 people total. The guide was knowledgeable and charismatic. The pace was just right. We toured the house, then had a demonstration of how the Sisal rope is harvested and processed. The machines from the 1800s are still working! It was very impressive. A Tamarind ice tea drink was served by the rope demonstrations and then we got on the horse drawn trolley that pulled us through the hennequin fields to the private Cenote where we had a 30 minute swim. Life jackets were provided. The horse trolley brought us back to the Palapa restaurant where we were served sample foods from the region. They were very tasty and the Palapa was refreshingly cool in the afternoon heat. When you balk at the somewhat high price, keep in mind that this operation could not support itself on Sisal processing alone. This is a tourism project that offers the visitor an inside view of colonial life during that time. Yes, it could be sad to think of the exploitation of the peasants and the ruling class Aristocracy of the times, but it was also insightful for understanding that part of Yucatan history. YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY A LOT OF $$ for a tour company out of Merida. It was an easy, pleasant drive for an independent traveler. We did not book ahead of time, but rather paid by credit card upon arrival.
If you're interested in information about the sisal industry, haciendas and Mayan history this covers it all. Very explicit, good English guide although sometimes we did feel like we weren't given all the info that given to the Spanish folks. After wards given a ride on rail to a cenote to cool off. There is a liquor cart if you want to buy a Beveridge.
Our tour guide was Felipe. He explained us the history of haciendas in Mexico and made with us a tour through the hacienda buildings. After that we had a live demonstration of the rope production starting with the Agave leaf and ending with a long rope. The tour ends with a swim in the underground cenote.
Excellent tour of the sisal factory with great history and story telling tour. The hacienda was amazingly reconstructed. Mule and cart ride to the cenote was relaxing as this was a 30+ degree day. The change rooms were perfect with Banos and showers. The cenote itself very refreshing but not a really special cenote. A bar cart outside to taste test Meza all and buy beers (75 pesos each). Surprisingly our tour ended at the restaurant where we served 3 little appetizers and a fruity drink as part of the tour. My rating takes into consideration that this is pricey, $72 cdn per person but it was a bilingual tour. But as expected, 15 minutes spanish and 5 minutes English...maybe it takes longer to articulate in Spanish, lol. All in all great tour.
Despite the actual experience being excellent with very gracious guides, other workers on the tour, and food; giving this 1 star due to the appalling business practices of the owner. I came with a friend who called to purchase tickets several days ahead and was clear we wanted Sunday morning, she was given a link and bought tickets. When we arrived, they said our tickets were for the previous day and would not be honored. There was no language issue as my friend is a local, and she owns and operates a hotel in Meridia, and clearly has no confusion how to buy a ticket for something. She was interested in this experience to recommend to her guests. Since we had driven an hour to get there. and after 15 minutes of trying to get them to at least give us some credit towards purchasing new tickets, the tour was starting so we had to purchase new tickets, so 3 of us paid DOUBLE price. There was plenty of room on the tour, and no reason for them to treat us like this. In our businesses we always strive to be most accommodating and this was totally opposite. Unfair and shady. I hesitate to recommend.
El guía Beni fue increíble! He spoke both Spanish and English to accommodate all the tourists in the group. We learned so much, not only about the process of manufacturing Henequén, but also about Mayan history and the history of the colonization of Yucatán by the Spanish. All the staff involved in the tour made it a great, educational experience. We highly recommend the meal package which is a small additional fee. Nuestra amiga es Yucateca and she said the food was delicious and authentic.
Wonderful experience at the hacienda! It is magical!! Everything about it is enchanting, from the staff to the surroundings; every piece of it tells you a story that immerses you and makes you feel like you are living in that era!
An unmissable experience to understand the living history of beautiful Yucatán, probably the only site where we could observe the henequen production process thanks to the effort of the entire team at this beautiful place. Sunrise at the hacienda is a dream, the food exquisite, the tour a beauty, very complete in every sense. Without a doubt, I will return with all my visitors so they can get to know this gem.
The tour of the hacienda is a great discovery of henequen production. In addition, the guide, Mr. Ivan, knows a lot about history and is very illustrative and kind. The hacienda is beautiful and very peaceful. Quite an experience.
We had a great time and ate the best cochinita in the world, it is truly worth it
Excellent service, the food is delicious, the tours are very nice. The hotel is impeccable and the staff provides very good service.
A wonderful experience, the place is beautiful, the contact with nature and the tranquility is spectacular, the hotel is beautiful, very clean and cared for in every detail, the beds are very comfortable and even better is the food, everything is super delicious and all the staff are very friendly and attentive, highly recommended! The tour is also a great experience and the cenote is incredible!!!
Bring a swimsuit, it has a beautiful pool
Very beautiful hacienda, we have incredible memories of it!
Excellent service and hospitality. The food is very good, its cenotes are beautiful, and its concept is very pleasant. Excellent donkey ride.
The Sotuta de Peón hacienda was a wonderful experience, not just the food, the hacienda, the cenotes, the experiences at the hacienda… but the warmth and kindness of all the people, Ivan, Javier and everyone at the hacienda, it was a pleasure to spend time with them. :)
A really cool tour that takes you through the history of the Hacienda, the forms and production processes of henequen, the green gold, the crop fields and, as if that weren't enough, it crowns the experience with a visit to the interior of a cenote where you can swim and cool off
If what you are looking for is a different experience, this is the place. Tranquility, which is what we seek when we leave the city, history with a hacienda building in excellent condition with impressive pieces, delicious fresh traditional Yucatecan food from the same garden of the hacienda that you can visit, and very warm and attentive staff. The truck ride to the cenote was something I had not seen in any of my trips. The manager is very attentive to the needs of his clients; at the bar after leaving the cenote, you have to order your Margarita Sisal, which is a henequen liquor, and you will not regret it.
It exceeded my expectations. In addition to enjoying the cenote, seeing the old machines for henequen production working is amazing. Jass, the guide, is excellent; she has a lot of knowledge on the subject. I recommend it for family outings, couples, or solo. The staff is very friendly and treats everyone equally.
A highly recommended experience on that stage of the history of Yucatan and the process of the enequen or Sisal tanimñonte for the state and the country.
The tour of the whole hacienda is very nice, the guide (I think it is called jazz) I explain everything super well! The demonstration of all the fabric manufacture with the henequen is incredible, how beautiful they still preserve all the machines and planting. All the staff are very friendly. The food is good and the flan is a must!! I had the opportunity for a full body massage with mari and it was perfect I loved the experience of adapting the spa inside the wagon. 10/10 I highly recommend it.
