We booked the York City Highlights Small Group Walking Tour for up to 8 guests, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide, Albert, was brilliant. He is incredibly knowledgeable and truly knows his stuff, perfectly bringing York's Roman, Viking, and medieval past to life as we explored the streets. What really stood out, though, was his personal touch—he made a genuine effort to find connections and links with everyone on the tour, making the whole experience feel personal and engaging for the entire group. If you are looking for an intimate and deeply informative walk through York’s history, I cannot recommend Albert and this tour highly enough!

This was a very informative tour, Arthurs historical knowledge was exceptional and he held our interest throughout the tour, York is a busy city and our concern was whether we could him clearly above the crowds especially in areas like the shambles but this did present a problem. This should be high on the list of your guided tours when visiting York
Really engaging and interesting. Wide ranging history told in a captivating way. Alfred was very friendly and made the tour relevant to all of us. Went with partner and 2 teenagers on a cold rainy day but all enjoyed it.
Sarah was fantastic! Super friendly, and a lot of great historical information. If you really love history and facts, this is the tour for you. Sarah was incredibly knowledgeable and this is a great way to get a quick overview of York to learn where to explore further later.
This was an excellent walk with a small group of 7 so that everyone could hear and ask questions of our guide Sarah- who is very knowledgeable about the area! She also had very interesting tidbits to add to the historical information such as the fact that Kit Kat candy was developed in York :-) I would highly recommend Sarah as a guide and this walk.
Our tour guide was amazing! She was very knowledgeable and we learned so much about York. I would highly recommend this tour!
Entertaining and informative
Very interesting historical tour. Sarah was an excellent and knowledgeable guide and we learned many new details which you would not know without a good guide
We had the absolute best tour of York with our tour guide Alfred. He was so knowledgeable about all the architecture and all the history of it was absolutely fascinating. What a great personality. He had a great tour. It was with all the highlights and various periods of York’s history from the Roman foundings through Vinkings, medieval, up to current days.. Webhighly recommend this tour. It was far and away our best day in York! Thanks to Alfred. Sherry and Fred
Our guide Alfred's passion for history and incredible historical knowledge made this a very fascinating and enjoyable tour. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting York.
Charlotte, our guide for the morning was extremely knowledgeable and passionate on our tour. She knew her stuff and took us off the beaten track to experience some of the more unusual areas of York that you wouldn’t know about, unless you knew. Great experience and would recommend.
Charlotte was a good and entertaining storyteller who took us to the highlights and showed us lots of places that would have been overlooked by non native audiences. Very enjoyable!
Alfred began our tour with a wonderful sense of anticipation and humor, and from the start we knew we were in for something special. He shared fascinating stories and historical details in such an engaging way that we came away feeling we had gained a much deeper understanding of York and its remarkable history. We especially appreciated the way Alfred used York’s city walls, and the different periods in which they were built, expanded and changed. He created an easy-to-follow timeline that brought York’s long and complex history to life in a way that was both memorable and easy to understand. Alfred’s humor added so much to the experience, as did his occasional musical references and obvious love of bluegrass music! He’a a wonderfully engaging and talented storyteller who knows how to make history informative, entertaining and fun. The Best of York Tour was truly excellent and one of the highlights of our time in York. We highly recommend both the tour and Alfred!
We had an absolutely brilliant walking tour with Alfred. He was incredibly knowledgeable, genuinely passionate about York’s history, and such a friendly, engaging guide. His storytelling brought every street and landmark to life, and he made the whole experience fun, relaxed and memorable. If you’re visiting York, I’d highly recommend booking a tour with Alfred!
Small groups are the way to. Our guide was polite and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about the history of York in a short time.
Ferah was a very knowledgeable and interesting guide. We found tour informative. Lots of information about how York is woven into the history of the UK
A guide who took care to understand his audience- what a treat! Alfred explained so much history without the need to know much before hand.
We booked a walking tour with York Tours as part of a large family reunion in York in June and it was one of the the highlights of our weekend. Alfred's enthusiasm, knowledge , humour and energy were just fantastic and everyone really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
Lovely and informative tour. Guide was very knowledgeable. I did wish we had gotten to a few more spots around the city.
My wife and I took the tour with Sarah. There were two others with us, so a nice small group. Sarah was very knowledgeable about the area and the tour was done at a fairly relaxed pace, to suit all levels of fitness 😉. Whenever we visit somewhere knew we always book a local to show us around. This was no exception and Sarah did not disappoint. Would highly recommend 👌
We were never bored. Our guide was very good. It's a slow pace and we were given history, facts, entertainment and humour. This tour showed us bits of York we wouldn't have otherwise. Recommend fully.
Our guide was Ferrah and she did a very nice job walking us thru history of the town and showing some highlights from hat helped us to decide what we wanted to see more off.
Really interesting. Friendly and knowledgeable guide.
Ferah, our guide was very knowledgeable. She shared not only historical and local information, but made it in an easy and enjoyable way to take it all in. The walk was easy and we walked thru places that a non local would never know that's there. Wish that it was longer as there was so much more to learn. Definitely recommend this. Love the smaller group dynamics
Our guide was Ferah and she was fantastic. Total group ended up being just my daughter and I along with Ferah. She was so knowledgeable and informative on the history of York. I peppered her with questions and she had an answer for all of them. She was great and I would recommend to anyone.
Fabulous tour. Very thorough knowledge of tour guide explained extremely well. Open to questions raised. Thoroughly recommended.
If you’re short on time in York then this is the tour for you. Our guide Sara was very knowledgeable and pointed out the key historical highlights during the 90 minutes.
My husband and I were so thrilled with our tour guide, Sarah. In addition to her wonderful personality, she is a true scholar and educator. Since she keeps her tours to a small group, she can gage her audience. As a result she structures everything so beautifully that our attention never waned. She also shared interesting stories of people's lives that we all could relate to, even today. She brought back my love of learning. My husband said that he learned more in this 1.5 hour tour than he did in his Western Civilization course his freshman year of college. The best city tour awaits you with Sarah as your guide!
We had a fantastic walking tour in York with Sarah as our guide. She was incredibly friendly, engaging, and informative, doing a great job of catering to a group with a range of nationalities and different levels of knowledge about British and York's history. The tour covered a span of history, from York's earliest beginnings through to more recent events, with plenty of facts and stories along the way. Even with a good knowledge of history, I still learnt lots of new and interesting things. The small group size made a real difference, it was easy to keep up, hear everything Sarah was saying, and ask questions throughout the tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting York who wants an enjoyable and informative introduction to the city's history
We had a fantastic day with Alfred who is so knowledgeable and entertaining. I highly recommend this tour if you are someone who appreciates history and context relevant to how history just repeats itself.
Alfred was a great and interesting guide. Perhaps less time at the Wall ruins and more in the city. Overall a great factual tour. Recommended.
The host was very amusing and new a lot..... It helped he is a local man.
Great tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and made it very interesting. Would highly recommend.
Friendly and knowledgeable guide.
Booked this for me and my partner and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We did it at the start of our weekend stay and it was a great way to learn lots of interesting things about the city. Alfred was a great tour guide, engaging, funny, and full of interesting stories that really brought everything to life. Would highly recommend!
This tour was our favorite activity in York. York is beautiful, alive, and vibrant with life. Walking through York is like walking through Disneyland except the town is real. Through her presentation, Farrah, our guide, used her knowledge of history and architecture to give us a wonderful overview of the history of England as it pertains to York. We were both educated and entertained. This tour was a great way to get a lot more out of our day in York. The tour was provided by Yorktours.
Sarah is very knowledgeable and informative and included fun facts. The walk was on the flat & not difficult.
Sara was extremely enthusiastic and informative. Everything you would want from a Tour guide.
Excellent knowledgeable guide Small group very personal
It is a compact tour, not covering a lot of distance but ranging far and wide in information given. The guide, Ferah, was excellent - charming, funny and very well informed.
Very good tour with a a great guide Arthur who was informative and also humourous, tour is a bit limited to just a few of the sites of York and no entrances to any sites but a good tour none the less due to the guide
Great tour guide Alfred. Knew his stuff very charismatic and a talented bass player too.
One of the best tours I’ve ever done. Alfred is very knowledgeable, witty and explains in a very interesting way
Very interesting and entertaining tour through central York with Alfred. He's a native who couldn't be better informed about this beautiful historic city. We highly recommend it!
Sarah was really knowledgeable with a good sense of humour. The small group tour was great, we saw parts of York city centre that we may not have seen on our own. Would highly recommend, great value for money.
Alfred was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We learned about the history of York via a story through time from the Romans to present day. Would highly recommend
Incredibly informative and enjoyable tour of York. Sarah was very knowledgeable and ready to answer any question. Highly recommend!
My husband and I very much enjoyed this tour with Sarah as an introduction to our time in York. We chose this particular tour because of the emphasis on history, and it did not disappoint. Sarah is very knowledgeable and a good communicator. The tour was a good mix of historical information and other items of interest such as filming locations. The 1.5 hours went by very quickly. We will definitely book a private tour on our next trip in order to learn more about York.
Lovely little tour focusing on the history of York. Our lovely guide Sarah was very knowledgeable about the different periods if York's history. This is the second time if done this tour and it's been great both times. I recommend!
Very knowledgeable guide explaining the links between York and the Minster and historical changes and events. May have been a little difficult for our Japanese visitors to fully understand
