Romans, Vikings And Medieval York: An Audio Tour

This is by far the best a city audio tour we have ever done. We loved not having to look at our phones constantly as the GPS worked perfectly to automatically play the next segment upon our arrival at locations. We found the tour information well researched and clearly spoken and we were able to really enjoy our afternoon around York, feeling immersed in the city, rather than half distracted by the audio as can sometimes happen. Someone complained about the app freezing. That happened to us once, but possibly only because we took a break of over an hour for a meal. We just quit the app and upon re-opening it worked perfectly.

The commentary was well put together, the overall narrative was clear and easy to understand, and the route took me to locations I almost certainly would have missed. Well worth the money and time taken.

Easy to follow guide and interesting content to learn about York. Good to do at your own pace, i do recommend it.

The app works fine on iphone 16. No glitches. You can even decide to do not follow the route and listen when you want. Punctual info at dedicated points with some detailed info. Recommended.

We really enjoyed the historical walking tour because we could take it at our own pace and it was lovely to have our own personal guy. Just write in our ear.

App very easy to download and use. Worked very well directions were clear. Content very informative and accessible. Audio was good quality. You could use it with a headpone in your phone in your pocket and not look like a tourist.

This was my first time doing a self-guided tour so I was a little unsure about how it would go, but it was a great experience! The instructions and app were very clear on where I should go at each step, and the tour itself was informative and entertaining. The only hiccups were a couple of the stops were closed off when I visited, but I suppose that can't be helped with something like this. It was very easy to skip ahead to where I was to go next. I especially appreciated the ability to pause the tour whenever I wanted, either to rest or take a closer look at something. Highly recommend it if you'll be traveling on your own.

The audio guides glitched, and some refused to work at all. I purchased 4 and only one!!! worked. I feel completely robbed and will never purchase a similar product from your site. If my Edinburgh hop-on/off bus is as useless, I will write a bad public review.

This was an excellent way to walk around York whilst being guided snd informed. So much history and places explained in detail but in an easy style. I took my time to complete the walk as was in no hurry. Thoroughly recommend this tour.

My husband and I decided to visit York whilst spending a week in Yorkshire with our 2 spaniels, having the dogs meant we were restricted, this audio walking tour was perfect for us, we could stop/start at any point. The narration was excellent and all in all very informative. We would highly recommend this.

Very interesting at laugh becuse there's things there from the 80s so does that make us antique s lol .the cells are good with projectors tell tales in each cell .definitely recommend

Great tour all around York with a lot of informations. Lot of folklore and great places to see and visits. The old York look fabulous

We knew York had a diverse history so a walking tour appealed, although we didn’t want to tag along with a group. The pre-recorded format, where we could stop and start at our own pace and to suit lunch/coffee breaks, suited us perfectly. However, best of all was the narrator, who was very knowledgeable and engaging, giving us an easy listening, educational tour which we both loved.

The app works well. Easy to install and follow. Informative and convenient. Also easy to adapt to accommodate route closures owing to river flooding!

At one point we stopped at a pub and needed to cut out some stops to make our train time however I wasn’t able to restart the audio at the place where we moved. If the audio/stops had numbers then maybe I could have restarted the walk knowing I was at audio number x. We did enjoy the walk up to the Blue Bell pub

For two people who are fairly computer literate it took us well over an hour to load the app and the tour. We set off and immediately found that we couldn’t get the narrative to play. We also weren’t using headphones and found we couldn’t tell whether to look at the map or listen to the narrative. We stopped for lunch and I was pleased that it prompted me to stop the tour to save my battery. When we tried to start the tour it wanted us to resume from where we left off and remained confused the rest of the tour. We both ran out of phone battery having started at 100%. It’s a good concept but so inflexible and clunky. Also the narratives were very brief. I would not recommend.

What a great tour! It was so easy to follow and informative every step of the way. It took us down alet’s and through areas that we wouldn’t have known were there otherwise. It was clear and easy to follow and picked up wherever we did, allowing us time to stop for beers and lunch on the way. It felt like we had our own personal guide with us. Thoroughly recommend.

It was well guided and covered all key points worth noting of York. This was our first time using self-guided audio tour and it really worked for us. We will definitely try it in other cities and countries.

James shared some memorable stories, very evocative. We felt he was walking with us, at our pace, and always had time for a stop at a cafe!

The tour helped us to understand the connection of York with certain historical events and people and being able to see their mark on York. Plus it highlighted places we have never noticed before or known about…yet walked past many times previously!

Loved it! Easy to follow, informative and concise with little snippets and alleyways we'd have never seen otherwise. Did it with two kids as well (aged 10 & 7) and it was good for them too. Highly recommend as you can go at your own pace, stop when you fancy it and resume when ready.

Interesting, Informative and easy to follow the route, we stopped and started a few times. We would never have seen and learnt lots of the history of York without this guide. We managed to navigate this with our dog too and one earbud each to keep alert!! We really enjoyed the tour. Good price

This audio tour was an absolute delight! We discovered so many places tucked away that we never would have seen otherwise! Love the flexibility of the tour, we could pause at any time and rejoin. The narrator was clear, knowledgable and wonderful to listen to. So happy we chose to do this!

This was really informative and took you all over York, really interesting. The bit after the pub doesn’t tell you where to go next and we got a little lost at that part but overall it was very interesting and I would certainly use the app again.

We didn’t receive the ticket so we’re not able to attend. We were told tickets would arrive by email in 1 hour. After 5 hours still nothing. By which time we had to leave York

An excellent tour with a really informative guide. Saw so much more of York using this tour. Even a hidden house which we never would have come across just wandering around.

Absolutely great! We bought this guide after fleeing from an awful live guided walk, and it was everything we wanted. Concise, interesting and relevant information. Fascinating and funny stories. It takes you every must-see in the city (though not necessarily inside them). We are already planning to use the app in a different city this weekend. PS: We found it quite complicated to access the guide, as we needed to download two different apps and search long and hard for the activation code.

IIt suited us very well that we could jump in and out of the guiding. The route and the guiding was very interesting and useful.

Great way to see the town at our own pace, we were able to stop for a coffee or lunch when it suited us. There was lots of interesting information and we were able to rewind and listen again if we missed something. Make sure you take an option for recharging devices as we did run out of power towards the end of the tour - we got the tour in fine but struggled a little afterwards with etickets for train etc

We were excited for this self guided tour. However, early in the tour we were to walk through a gate-which was locked. We couldn’t figure out a go around and soon lost hope. I’m sure it would have been good had we been able to complete.

I am so glad I found this on Tripadvisor. No disrespect to normal tours or tour guides, but this was far better in comparison. No getting left behind in large summer crowds or struggling to hear a guide. Just download the easy-to-use VoiceMap app, pop your headphones in and off you go! It took us a full day but we loved every minute being history buffs. I definitely would have missed so many landmarks without this audio guide. You can pause for breaks and resume parts later if you prefer, we interrupted ours to return to York Minster for a tour. Unfortunately two parks and the abbey were closed for an event, so we just had to listen to those ones without seeing them. We've recommended this one to all friends heading to York. We did an audio tour of London using this app afterwards, but it wasn't nearly as informative or detailed as this York one. Highly recommend!

We spent way, way longer than the tour was supposed to take, because we took a million breaks, but it was a very nice way to be introduced to York. Definetly best when you've first arrived and then you can plan what to visit afterwards. Very much enjoyed the tour and it was super easy to follow.

A brilliant tour, I really felt like I got an idea of the history of York over the years. It was quite a long walk but definitely worth doing.

We were able to stop/start as we wished and made the tour last for several hours as we wandered the city updating our knowledge. It was easy to follow the directions to get to each destination. The city information given in the audio was great
