This was a great way to spend an afternoon for a guided historic tour of York. The directions were easy to follow but each stop was a delight to listen to. We took it in our own time following half of the steps before finishing off the rest of the tour after refreshments. I feel that the price and convenience of this self guided tour was superb!

Itinerary
Walk among ruins of a church, destroyed not by war but by a king's grudge
Spot the line in the stonework where Roman hands stopped and medieval builders picked up
Trace how an abbot's luxury residence survived the very purge that destroyed the abbey next door
Discover the medieval gates of York, known as "bars," and pass beneath the gate that once faced Scotland
Hear why wealthy Georgians fought to keep York's crumbling walls private — and how the public won.
Discover how this historic bar also served as a home and a site for public proclamations.
Hear about the famous sightings of spectral Roman soldiers and other hauntings within this storied mansion.
Discover the modern sculpture of Constantine, commemorating his proclamation as Emperor in York in AD 306 and his legalization of Christianity.
Marvel at York Minster, a towering masterpiece of Gothic and medieval architecture, reflecting centuries of craftsmanship and spiritual significance. Discover its stunning exterior and pause the tour if you wish to enter.
Follow the ancient Roman road buried beneath this shopping street, once rutted by ox-carts hauling Minster stone.
Piece together the tale of Mad Alice on the snickelway that once bore her name
Explore Shambles, a beautifully preserved medieval street known for its narrow lanes, timber-framed buildings, and rich history as York's primary butcher area. Explore unique shops, enjoy the charming atmosphere, and discover historical sites like the shrine of St. Margaret Clitherow.
Pause at York's most haunted pub, where over fifteen spirits reportedly refuse to leave — including a one-eyed regular.
Pause at the headquarters of York's medieval investors
See where archaeologists unearthed a Viking city preserved beneath modern streets, complete with silk from the Far East.
Count the hangings that took place on this site before it traded justice for curiosities
End at the mound where a hundred and fifty people sought refuge — and never came back down.
Pause at the church where Guy Fawkes was baptised — and find out why his old school still refuses to burn his effigy.

This self guided tour by Bhavana was a great way to pass the time in York, i've been plenty of times and wondered passed these landmarks without knowing anything about them! Although I was solo it would be a great group/family outing. There was just enough information on each of the 20 stops without it being to much, which would leave time in between for a discussion. It does say 1.5 - 2.5 hrs but i'm nosey and it took me 3.5 hrs without actually going into any of the landmarks this would make it a full days outing queue's and money permitting depending on your circumstance. Definitely recommend this tour to everyone, value for money with clear and concise guides along the way, thank you.

Really good, great guide. Go later so you don’t have kids on the tour.
I learned a lot from this tour. I did have to keep going back and forth between the app and Google maps to navigate. But I enjoyed the tour.
It was great, genuinely a good guide, simple and easy to use.
Excellent way to do a self guided walking tour
Excellent tour. We had only arrived in York and had no idea where to go or what to do so the tour gave us a real purpose and we felt that we had really explored all of York when we finished. It was very informative and interesting and great value for money. The fact that it is a self guided tour meant that we could take as much time as we wanted at each of the stops. The map and the photos are very helpful as you navigate through the city, We have done a self guided walking tour before using the Tourific app and would definitely recommend them.
A really informative and easy to follow tour. Perfect to be able to pick up at your own pace and do other things in between, a good overview of the history of York, you recommend!
Great if you want to do a Tour in your own time. But I struggled with the map and lack of instructions how to find the next place. Downloading the app was only possible for me when I was connected to the WiFi.
V basic. Geared for someone who doesn’t know the uk. Obviously AI. No instructions but relied on a map which didn’t correspond to the walkways around York. Confusing
Excellent guide to see all the important parts of York in 1 trip, lots of things we would easily have missed. Shame it rained ALOT, but still enjoyable
We loved that we could access the app on different days and pick up where we left off and we could do it in any order. Photos were clear, the map was sometimes aided by Google maps but easy to navigate.
Tour includes part of the wall walk that is closed. Also, do not attempt this walk before 10am as gates to first stops are locked.
Informative but the order of the visiting spots in the description is different from the audio guide, made it very confusing and hard to find the next stop. It took me more time to figure things out so cannot finish the whole tour in the end.
The narrative about each place was interesting . Getting from one place to another was mostly done by guesswork as the maps are small and difficult to read on a phone screen especially when you are in busy streets. One place we couldn't find at all. Mostly a good cheap way to explore York.
Very interesting audio tour with easy to follow map. with interesting details on stops. Would recommend a battery back up for your mobile as the tour does use a lot of power.
Very informative, clear instructions easy to follow. Plenty of places to stop on way if you fancy a bite to eat or a drink.
Dave clearly knows York and enjoys sharing his knowledge. He made sure we saw ‘everything’ while we wandered about and his stories brought it to life. Highly recommend.
We had a wonderful day in York. The self guided tour meant we could walk from location to location and spend as long or short a time at each as we wanted.
My husband, son and I took the self guided tour today. The app was easy to install on our phones and worked really well. It was easy to stop /start when required and the pictures helped to identify the location. We did find that we needed to use google in addition to the app to navigate to each location. The tour was interesting and we enjoyed doing it at our own pace and was very good value.
Great tour around York. Very interesting commentary. It was a great way to see sights we might have missed and at our own pace
Had an enjoyable day in sunny York. It was my first time visiting and I was not disappointed. From the museum park to the cobbled streets and ancient buildings. Everything was vibrant to see. It was not very busy, which was also a good thing. It's a place I would revist at some point.
The highlights that we saw were interesting, but there were not enough clear directions while navigating through the city or much extra information about the city while walking from place to place
Really enjoyed this! It was such good value for money and allowed to see so much more of York than we otherwise would have. We did the tour in a random order (so we could start near where we were staying), as well as pausing etc. when it suited us. Very good tour and highly recommend!
First time trying such a tour. Clear route, important information, not too in-depth, can do at your own pace. Recommend without hesitation.
Disappointing. The map in the app did not work and we found the exact same tour in a Rick Steves travel book. Would not recommend this tour.
Known through our research on AI. The tour and the commentary are excellent. We took the 20-stop one since we were there for only 1 day. We saw everything and found what we wanted to do. Thanks!
Enjoyable texts/audios, well explained and not too long. We didn't have time to finish the 19 stops, but days later we listened to them and it completed our trip, because we had passed by all the points we had missed. Very good experience.
Interesting information for a self-guided audio tour. We used the provider in two cities and found both tours to be very good.
Nice walk with a funny guide who could tell nicely.
The standalone tour with the app on our phones was great. The descriptions were not too heavy and the photos made sure to see the right thing.
By clicking on the individual sights it is possible to start or rejoin the tour anywhere. There is enough time to see the places at your own pace. The map of attractions is extremely helpful. Except for a point where we thought we were in a dead end, we encountered all the places.
