We booked this on a whim and so glad we did! It was the perfect lunchtime activity - lovely fish and chips, the chance to see the city from a different perspective, and a great tour guide, Andy. For those who hadn’t booked lunch, there was an onboard bar serving some snacks, soft drinks and a selection of alcoholic beverages too. Thoroughly enjoyed, would recommend to those seeking a quieter, more relaxed tour experience (experience lasted around 45 minutes)

Reviews
Highly disappointing. The fish and chips were fine - the cruise offered very little - just did a loop on the river showing two bridges and a school. The hop on off bus was much better value for money and we told others this when asked.
Fish & chips were great, but no napkins used paper towels from the toilet. Couldn’t hear any cometary.
Excellent fish and chips -great that you do GF too which were so good. Lovely to cruise along the river while having a great lunch
Four seconds, that was the longest time across the whole trip that there was any period of quiet across the journey. The guide was so loud that it was impossible to hear anyone in our party or hold any sort of conversation. It completely spoiled the trip. It was completely let down by the guide, who essentially shouted his way through the whole trip. Right from the moment the boat left, the "guide" gave his view of the river and what's around. Some of it would be fine, but he just needs to stop shouting or telling people about his personal life. The fish & chips were pretty good, fresh & warm, better than we expected. The cruise itself was ok, nice trip along the river. If you go, let's hope you don't get Andy shouting at you for the whole trip.
Nice boat trip with a very nice crew and good food
Used a gift voucher from my daughter on 9th July 2026. On boarding the boat we were informed our fish and chip meal - recorded on the crew's list along with a dozen others - had already been handed to someone else who apparently they couldn't identify and were unable to replace the meal. The cruise itself was OK, especially as it was a hot sunny day. The person in charge of the crew advised me he had already notified the office and they would be in touch to resolve the missing meal issue. This didn't happen, and after two months of phone calls and emails between myself, City Cruises and Red Letter Days I finally received some recompense. Throughout the process City Cruises were unhelpful in the extreme, refusing to acknowledge or resolve the matter and no word of apology at any level in the company. Without the admirable intervention of Red Letter I would have received nothing. Beware should you need to ever complain to this company.
Good value for money / staff were very pleasant- all and all a lovely peaceful little trip up the river
Lovely boat ride through the river ouss! Our Captain, Scott, was amazing! His commentary was just enough to keep us listening, which went well with taking in all the views. Would 100% reccomend for a rainy day like we had.
This was a peaceful, fun and interesting way to spend an hour/hour and a half in the evening. The fish and chips were absolutely just right and there was a bar with friendly staff on board too! The commentary was interesting and the music played in between was at just the right volume so you could still chat while watching the world pass by. The boat was really clean, which given that you are eating and moving on water is worth noting :)
Absolutely loved this trip which I booked for me and my sister. From the moment we boarded we were made to feel so welcome, bar staff incredibly helpful and they also brought the fish and chips within 10 mins of boarding. The food was piping hot and a good sized portion. Great background music in between the guides commentary which was very interesting. All in all we loved it and worth every penny-very highly recommended!
We have just disembarked from a rather special fish and chips cruise this evening which included an amazing "eclipse" experience. Cannot fault the staff on board, the delicious fish and chips, which included a gluten free option too. The music played on board, especially once the eclipse began was fabulous. Well done to whoever put that playlist together. You made a memorable holiday even more memorable. Highly, highly recommended. Whoops, forgot to say thank you too for the "eclipse glasses" that we were all given. Wonderful touch. Thank you
Had a lovely trip along the Ouse with some great fish and chips Alison was a great guide with the history of the river and bridges
The boat trip was super and well organised. We thoroughly enjoyed it. And it seemed longer than an hour! Good value. Didn’t enjoy the Fish & Chips which were chewy, as they had been kept warm.
Really enjoyed the cruise but the fish and chips spoilt it .The chips were hard and the fish grey and tasteless. However We are from Hull and the fish and chips here and on the coast are a different level and we are just used to that quality.Just do the cruise and go to Cave St Hull for your food
Expect to have to ask about your ticketed entitlements... Fish & Chips part of the ticketing are not passed out or mentioned when boarding or during commentary. Although there was ice in my spirited drink, the bottled beer was warm. Otherwise the tour was a peaceful way to view the river banks and the outskirts of the city
Such a waste of money. The fish and chips were shockingly bad; greasy and hard chips with mushy, broken fish. We tried it and had to leave it and eat elsewhere afterwards. Mr Chippy who supplies it should be ashamed of providing this trash. The boat trip consisted of 14 minutes of commentary and the rest of the time it was overly loud music blasting. Don't waste your money or an hour of your time on this.
The fish and chips were excellent. We nearly missed the trip because we spent alomost 30 minutes walking aroung as there was no sigposting of where the embarkation point was anywhere nearby and every local trades person we asked had never heard of King's Staithes
Andy our tour guide was very informational and we loved learning about York from the river Ouse. Fish and chips weren’t the best however which was slightly disappointing.
Very relaxing experience and the fish and chips were lovely. We were lucky to be on the boat on a beautify sunny day so it made the experience even more satisfying
This is a must xed experience so not all upassengers are Fish and chips. Get your food early from the bar because of it getting cold. Staff very friendly and approachable and willing to assist, bar reasonably priced.
We enjoyed the hours cruise along the river, the fish and chips were fresh and hot. Very tasty. The commentary was informative, and we enjoyed the experience.
Relaxing river cruise with tasty fish and chips. Friendly and helpful staff. A very enjoyable experience. Would highly recommend.
Nice trip along the river with commentary from the captain. Fish and chips were good and drinks available to buy.
It was a nice trip. Wish to be there again
Nice gentle river cruise ' with great fish and chips and welcoming staff on board very well stocked bar
It could have been a relaxing hour but the loud music playing made it more like a party boat. When the skipper/guide spoke, which wasn’t very often, she was difficult to understand because of the raised volume and ‘blown’ speakers (at least on the lower deck). We mistakenly thought it would be a learning tour, about York. Not so. The fish and chips were good.
I really enjoyed it the fish and chips were lovely and just enough, the driver was very informative about the history with added humour. Breakdown added to the experience.
Great way to spend lunch on cruise up and down the river Ouse! Listening to fun facts about York too from the Captain. Fish and chips were of a high standard and well worth having before setting off on the river cruise.
Enjoyed the trip and well narrated by the skipper but the fish and chips were very poor quality and would advise to avoid
Fantastic experience. Staff were very friendly and efficient. We had the fish & chips which were exceptional quality and appreciated the vegan and gluten free options for members of our party. 20% discount at the bar was a plus & the cruise itself was very picturesque relaxing and informative. Would very highly recommended.
Nice trip but I thought it just wasn't long enough by the time you had fish and chips and a drink it was nearly time to get off.
Really disappointed after reading some reviews, the fish and chips although very hot were tasteless and with soggy batter, the cruise was a bit boring lasting 50 mins and not much to see.
Me and my husband had a lovely hour on the cruise, friendly staff and interesting commentary. The fish and chips were lovely, hot and tasted delicious
A different way to enjoy a tour and have fish and chips. Friendly team and good food.
An enjoyable trip spent on the river ouse. The fish and chips were plentiful and served straight away. The commentary from Andy was very informative and entertaining. Ellie was very professional serving drinks/making sure we got on and off the boat safely.
the staff made the experience, lovely bunch of people. the portion of food was quite reasonable, and the cruise was nice! bonus that we were looking to have great weather, and the length of the cruise was about perfect.
We booked on to the Fish and Chips Cruise for a day out in York - an absolutely blinding sunny day as well! Getting on and off the boat was well organised and efficient, lovely staff throughout the experience and we really enjoyed listing to Andy as he talked us through the sights en route. We learned a lot about the city and it was beautiful to take it all in. The fish and chips were piping hot and we enjoyed them before the sailing started. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to see and learn a lot in a one hour package.
We booked the cruise for 6pm. Rocked up ay 5.40 and all the tables were taken! Managed to get two seats right up front though so we had an amazing view once we set off. There was a good mix of music and tour operator talk throghout. We got 20% off at bar and fish and chips tasty and lovely and hot. Would highly recommend this experience if visiting York!
Lovely river cruise with the added bonus of fish and chips being served as we sailed along the River Ouse. Fish and chips were delicious, (although we didn’t get the mushy peas shown in some of the review photos). The commentary by our pilot, Xand, was brilliant! Very informative but also very entertaining. Highly recommend this trip if you’re visiting York.
Sadly this trip didn’t go ahead due to flooding but communication from the cruise operator was none existent. This would make me think twice about booking again with them. Refund was swift though.
Was an amazing experience to go on with my girlfriend get to see York from a different view and having the fish and chips was an added bonus.
Did the Fs n Cs afternoon cruise. Food was great, and the cruise was a nice way to see York from a different angle. Not a great deal to see, but it was a relief to get off the feet for an hour or so.
It’s pretty bad tbh Reasons why fish and chips is like a Grease ball and you don’t go far you could just get a better fish and chips if you wanted and walked to the places Overall don’t go
Good day out fish and chips very good. Only downside couldn't hear the Comentry downstairs. Hence the marking down to 4 stars.
Cruise was ok. Fish and chips were poor. Expected cod or haddock but what we got was monkfish. Didn't enjoy and was really looking forward to it.
Brilliant tour, enjoyed it. Andy our captain was great, really knowledgeable and humorous. Enjoyed the fish and chips too!
Nice trip down the river and good commentary about the history of York. Fish and chips delicious. Would recommend on a trip to York.
Lovely trip , staff were very helpful and polite Good fish & chips , good information about the area , time spent on boat was about 1hr
The booking experience was easy through trip advisor and they also sent a reminder text message the day before with a link to the tickets which was handy as I booked a while ago. The boat trip was good, the captain was telling you some history of York while sailing along the river. All the staff were friendly and polite and the fish and chips were lovely too. I would recommend this experience as the shambles and York minster are within walking distance of kings staith, which is where you board the boat. We made a day of it and are likely to return.
