Our walking tour with Alfred in mid September was excellent! We learned so much about York and its history. We covered a lot of ground moving around the city. Also, we learned that Alfred is a fan of Premier League soccer which my husband and son are as well so they had a great time talking about football! We so enjoyed getting to know about York with Alfred. I highly recommend booking a private walking tour with York Tours!
Alfred met us at our hotel and took us on a fabulous walking tour around old York town. Alfred was delightful and very knowledgeable. He also had a knack of relating the history to current times. Mary and I had a very enjoyable experience. Alfred was very accomodating to allow us rest breaks. I would highly recommend this walking tour as the best way to see and understand York . Simply outstanding.
Had an amazing private tour with Alfred. His extensive knowledge and ability to tell a story made the tour so engaging. We are still talking about it a month later. Alfred organized a walk that allowed for even time for tea at Betty's and a rest. Highly recommend this tour to connect and learn your way around York.
A superb tour; Alfred captivated the children (age 2-9) and deftly wove their questions and knowledge into the narrative. A nice touch that he also extended the history to include our home city. Thank you - I’m sure we will book again.
Alfred is a very knowledgeable tour guide and extremely well-versed in the history of York. My husband and I felt like we were walking through history at every turn because of Alfred’s vivid narration and engaging conversation. We highly recommend this tour!
Even though the weather was not on our side, we really enjoyed our walking tour. Alfred was really knowledgeable and considerate of the rainy day! Learnt so much about York and its history, thoroughly recommend!
Alfred was a gracious, knowledgeable, and engaging guide. His storytelling brilliantly weaved together the story of York - this alone is a tall order given York's many-layered history. We saw many well-known sights (perfect for my in-laws' first visit to York), and some hidden gems. Alfred was also very kind to answer all of our questions with keen insights. I highly recommend this tour with Alfred for your next visit to York, whether it's your first or 10th time to the city. Thank you, Alfred!
This is the best tour we have ever taken. Alfred was truly a delight and a gem. He is a wealth of information and history buff. Taking a private tour with him provided the opportunity to chat about so much history, linger at places, and have every question answered so thoughtfully. Next time we go to York we will be seeing him. He wrote a book, BTW!
Alfred was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. We know some Yorkshire history; he picked up on that and directed his comments and observations accordingly. We highly recommend.
Alfred was a good guy. Super friendly and full of knowledge. Would definitely recommend this tour with Alfred!. Learned a lot of things that I didn’t know despite many school trips!
Sarah was excellent, we covered the parts of the city that were most interesting. Although the tour didn’t include entry to the Minster, we had tickets for later in the day, she gave us a history of the different structures on the site which made our visit much better. She has a great depth of knowledge about the city and shared it with relevance. We would highly recommend this tour.
Our 2hr walking tour was superb👏 Sara had so much historical knowledge and planned our route related to important information very well. It was just my husband and I which was great and we had time to ask lots of questions. By the time we’d finished we felt as though we’d not only achieved York’s story, but had achieved a new frind in Sara! Such a lovely friendly person. Both she and her husband Alfred communicated with us very well prior to our arrival in York. I would thoroughly recommend their guidance.
Alfred was a wonderful guide who made our private tour tailored in such a way that the adults and the kids learned a lot about the town of York and its history. The stories were entertaining and funny and we enjoyed every moment of it .
Excellent insights on the transformation of York over the millennia. Alfred was very engaging and enthusiastic about the history of his hometown, bringing context and perspective to what we were seeing. So much meaningful information in just two hours. A great way to kick off a visit to York. Well done, Alfred!
Alfred is a fabulous knowledgeable guide Covered a lot of ground efficiently and in a very enjoyable way
What a fantastic tour! Alfred our guide was brilliant. His knowledge of York's history was incredible and he took us on a tour of the city that showed us how unique and fascinating York is. His stories were so entertaining and informative and made me see York in a completely different light. I cannot recommend him highly enough! Book a tour with Alfred, you will be delighted, it's best two hours you will have in York!
We absolutely loved our tour of York with Alfred!! From the very beginning Alfred made the tour fun, interesting and engaging for everyone in our group, from our three kids (ages 7, 10 and 12) to my 74 year old father. We had communicated in advance some background about ourselves, and Alfred remembered all of our details which made the experience that much more personable. Alfred is extremely knowledgeable on the history, architecture, "hidden secrets" and basically every aspect of York, the UK and beyond. Our tour wove together the ancient history of York to the present day in a cohesive and fascinating story. Alfred complimented the sights we saw with some images on an ipad and in books, which provided another interesting dimension, especially for the kids. Alfred even shared with us some of his personal experiences growing up in the city which the kids also loved. We truly felt that all the sights and stories we learned of York could not have been found in a book or travel guide. A truly memorable experience – highly recommend – thank you Alfred!
Alfred was an excellent guide! We really liked York, we should have stayed two days in the city, it's a charm.
Prior to our visit, Alfred contacted us to arrange pickup from our hotel and agreed to move the start time by an hour to accommodate us. The two hours passed amazingly quickly as Alfred had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the City and tailored the tour to fit our interests which he had assimilated very quickly. This meant that we could go into much deeper level of detail of the origins of the City and the impact the various periods of history had on it! His delivery of the subject matter was very engaging and amusing. Cannot believe how much knowledge we packed into the 2-hour Tour. We cannot emphasise the benefits of this one-to-one tour in getting a much deeper appreciation of the beautiful city of York. Alfred is a wonderful host – so cannot recommend highly enough this private tour for your visit.
Our guide Alfred (who owns YorkTour) was a fantastic guide. Our family group included our 15 year old daughter and my 89 year old mum (in a wheelchair) and we all found the tour really interesting and enjoyable. Alfred tailored the walk to suit the wheelchair but I don’t think we missed out on anything because of it. York within the city walls is mostly flat and not very big so we managed to see and learn a lot in the 2 hours. Alfred’s love of his home city is obvious. Can’t recommend YorkTour highly enough.
Our party of four greatly enjoyed our walking tour of York with Alfred. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history and architecture of York and skilled at conveying his knowledge in an entertaining but thoughtful manner. He was patient answering our multiple questions. It was great having a small group. The tour helped us to become familiar with York so we could decide which areas we wanted to explore later in the day. I would highly recommend it.
It was our pleasure to spend a couple of hours on this tour with Alfred a couple of weeks ago. He contacted us to arrange a suitable starting point for our tour although a pick up from our accommodation was also an option. Whilst the tour is obviously about the history of York, Alfred immediately picked up on our interest in Art and architecture and he highlighted many features and places of interest that we would have otherwise missed. His knowledge of York is exceptional and his delivery is engaging. We can certainly recommend this tour; definitely worth paying the extra for a one to one experience.
Alfred was a wonderful storyteller, extremely knowledgeable and was very skilled at covering the 2000 year of history of York in our tour in a way that really made one think and observe a bit more closely. We learnt so much that we would never have been able to without Alfred. It was truly fascinating. If you are remotely interested in history you couldn’t fail to enjoy this tour. Thank you Alfred.
Alfred guided our small group of 4, including two children, around York on a most engaging way, keeping the children interested the whole way. Highly recommended.
We're a family group of four, including two children of 10 and 7. Our guide, Alfred, is exceptionally knowledgeable, but also managed to keep the children engaged with some clever spotting games. He did a fantastic job of contextualising York's history for us. I can see now why he has such a high rating on here.
Alfred gave 2 of us an individual walking walking tour of York. It was absolutely amazing to find out all about the history of York. Alfred was hugely knowledgeable about York’s history and was able to answer all our questions about the city and other parts of England. I highly recommend Alfred’s tour. It has set us up for a great few days sightseeing in York.
There were four of us adults together as a family unit and the tour was booked as private. Alfred, our guide, collected us at the correct time and place and the tour began immediately with an explanation of the square we were in and how we could see two thousand years of history from this one spot. From there we kept up a good pace and covered most of the city. Alfred was able to point out salient features and interesting points from history as we walked around the city (I now happily know what a Snickleway is - thanks Alfred!). We stopped at places that required it whilst Alfred gave a more in depth explanation. All this was delivered in a professional and, quite often, witty way and it is clear that Alfred has both a deep knowledge and passion for his home town. In all the tour took two hours and fifteen minutes and we were left feeling that our knowledge of not only York, but history in general, was better for having taken the tour. If you want to learn a little (a lot actually) about York, then I could not recommend this tour highly enough. Alfred is personable and knowledgeable and has a great way of getting this across! :)
Finding out more about Yorkshire people including John snow what a man. Alfred extremely witty and knowledgeable guide. Would recommend tour to anyone visiting York.
We were lucky enough to have experienced the fabulous private walking tour of York yesterday... Alfred was prompt in providing us details after our initial booking and met us as promised at our hotel... he was so passionate about York and was very easy going so we all felt very comfortable and able to chat and ask questions as we went along... the pace of the tour was just right and it gave us such an insight to many aspects of York life and it’s fascinating history.... We are so glad we booked this tour for the start of our stay here in York as we have more understanding about what we are seeing and where we would now like to explore further. It was definitely great value for money and we all agree that we cannot recommend YorkTour and Alfred enough... Thank you Alfred.
Brilliant 2 hour tour of York with Alfred. He has a brilliant way of bringing history to life. Not only providing facts and figures, but more interestingly, relating past events to what’s going on all around us. He’ll even tell you about the ups and downs of being a York City football supporter!
Enjoyed a very informative tour of York with Albert today - he made everything very interesting and showed us parts of York we wouldn’t have encountered.would highly recommend Hopefully we’ll return to York soon .
We were fortunate to have Alfred provide us with our personalised tour of the city which concentrated on the Roman aspects of the city. His knowledge, style and personality were an absolute winning combination. We could not have asked for more and would recommend him totally.
We were met by Alfred at our hotel, he then took us on this amazing and amazingly delivered tour of York throughout the ages. Fascinating, full of facts, learned, friendly, funny and informative without overload. Highly recommended. Thank you Alfred
We were very fortunate to have Alfred as our tour guide. He is very knowledgable about the Viking history of York and he gave us a very momerable experience. We had a large group of 30+ guests and despite the stormy weather we had a great walk in the central part of the city. We learned a lot about the Viking heritage of York and would definitely recomment the York Tour company.
Our party of 9 - four adults and five children, including four Americans - were all highly entertained by Alfred during our two hour tour. He positioned the tour perfectly for us all. Unconditionally recommended.
Brilliant tour, great fun. Alfred is an historical walking encyclopaedia! Very Highly recommended. It was a rainy day and but Alfred kept us amused with anecdotes and fun facts. Extremely informative tour, you will not be disappointed.
Alfred is extremely knowledgeable, erudite, articulate and imparts lots of complicated facts very clearly. He's an expert - he knows his subject well and he shares his love of York and its fascinating history with humour and generosity. I'd go again tomorrow.
My husband and I recently visited York and hired Alfred for a private tour of this amazing, beautiful city. He took us to very special, lovely sites and we learned so much about York's history, art and architecture. This made our visit even more enchanting and memorable. Alfred seems to truly love his city and is happy to share its fascinating history and interesting stories. He is a wonderful guide. We truly enjoyed spending a few hours with him, and we will for sure call him again next time we visit this most awesome city. We are so happy we hired Alfred for a private tour of York. He is THE BEST!!!
Had a wonderful private tour with Sarah and Alfred. Their enthusiasm, knowledge and love of the city shone through. We have lived in the York area for over thirty years, yet we still learnt so many new things, including the York cats! We now walk around with reawakened eyes. We highly recommend the tour to York residents as well as visitors to the city. Thank you both, your guide book is great as well Alfred.
An excellent tour. Alfred, our guide, took 10 of us on a private historic walking tour of York. Spanning the Roman, Viking , Medieval, Victorian and modern periods of the city. An easy pace took us from exhibition square by one of the city's gates, through the museum gardens, St. Mary's church and the city walls, to the heart of the city and its hidden snickleways, ending up at the shambles. The tour was entertaining, interesting and informative. I definately recommend the tour.
Was surprised how many women influenced history in York..... Sarah led an interesting and informative tour. Very enjoyable
Alfred led our group (Rick Steves) on a guided tour of the walled city. He was very informative, and excited about his city and it's history. Highly recommend.
Alex Hickling was our guide in August of 2019. He walked us through the historic and architectural sites of York, with history spanning the last 2000 years. His explanation of what and why happened in and around the York in this time span was most informative and very lively. His depth of knowledge is immense. The tour of the York Minster was especially deep and informative, and the Minter itself is the most beautiful and impressive site.
