Two (or three, really - waterfall, temple, rice terraces) very different locations. The waterfall is all about power and motion, the rice terraces are calm and serene. For us, the guide did the waterfall first, and that worked out well. There is a fair amount of walking in both locations, getting to the bottom of the waterfall involves a lot of steps and wading through a shallow stream, but it's well worth it. (You can just look at the waterfall from the top observation deck if you want). The rice terraces were incredibly beautiful in the late afternoon light and after visiting the temple we stopped at a coffee shop where they sold locally grown coffee - very good so we bought some. The driver, Dani, was informative and relaxed and navigated the horrendous Yogya traffic with ease. Highly recommended.

This was a great way to see some nature and do something different after touring the big temples. My driver and guide, Maxi, was a great and patient companion for the day. Would recommend to anyone looking for a day away from the crowds.
A really fun experience with Maxi who was super friendly and knowledgeable! The food and coffee were also great! My favourite part was walking to the waterfall and riding the motorbike back!
We had a wonderful experience with Fery, our driver and guide, who was incredibly friendly, accommodating and thoughtful throughout the entire day. During the trek through the rice terraces around Selogriyo and later at Kedung Kayang Waterfall, he was always attentive and made sure I was safe, especially along the steeper and more uneven parts of the trail. I really appreciated how considerate he was without ever making the experience feel rushed or overly cautious. He was also very knowledgeable and shared a lot of interesting information about the local history, culture and way of life along the way, which made the whole trip much more meaningful than simply visiting the sights. What stood out most was how genuinely friendly and thoughtful he was throughout the day. I felt very well looked after from beginning to end. Highly recommended, and I would happily book a tour with him again.
Our driver/guide Aman was very pleasant and informative. The drive to the rice fields gave us a snapshot of life outside Yogyakarta city. The walk through the rice fields to the temple was a very pleasant, easy walk. The temple and garden was very calming and our local coffee was tasty. We then drove to the waterfall over an hour from the temple towards Merapi volcano. After 3 months with no rain there was still water flowing. However there is limited opportunity to walk all the way down to the base of the falls. I recommend the temple and rice fields but not the waterfalls in the same trip.
While our daughters were off visiting Jomblang Cave, my wife and I chose to explore the rice fields with Asmaradhana Borobudur Tours. We were met by Bima, whose excellent English made it easy for us to enjoy a wide range of fascinating conversations about Java, village life and the process of growing rice. We were taken to a village outside Yogyakarta and treated to stunning scenery as we walked through the fields, passing locals hard at work planting and harvesting rice. The variety of crops was remarkable, including chillies, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines, lemongrass, coffee and much more. It was a wonderful opportunity to see rural life at close quarters and gain a real insight into how much work goes into producing the food grown here. After visiting Selogriyo Temple, we stopped on the way down at a small, perfectly formed drinks stall run by an enterprising young couple. Their local coffee was excellent, but the real hit was the hot chocolate and ginger drink. We enjoyed it so much that we bought some of the powder to take home with us. We had set off early and felt very privileged to experience such a beautiful place before other visitors arrived. It isn't a busy area by any means, but the early morning light was particularly special, with just us and the local farmers working in the fields. It was a fantastic day, combining beautiful scenery, fascinating conversations and a genuine glimpse into rural Javanese life. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for something a little different and a chance to experience Java beyond the usual tourist attractions.
Maxi really made the trip memorable, he is incredibly knowledgeable and so friendly and professional! The experience in itself was amazing and would definitely recommend to other people! I would say is value for money as well.
It was a great trip, i had Maxi as my guide. He has been very accomodating, is very knowledgeable, reliable and cares about the well-being of his customers.
Marvelous tour of the greater Yogyakarta area! This is a lovely option for those interested in getting out into the countryside of central Java. Selogriyo Temple, the rice terraces, and Kedung Kayang Waterfall are all glorious. My guide was Didik, who did a great job caring for me. We even had a terrific lunch together, which he helped find in Yogyakarta. I recommend this tour.
Our tour with Maxie was a delight. From the pick up he was warm and welcoming and made us feel at ease. We started in the beautiful rice paddies where Maxie showed and told us all about the cycle of planting and the villagers strong relationship to their land. Always ready with a laugh and a smile, he guided us up through the rice paddies pointing out a wide variety of plant and animal life, including the incredible golden ladybugs which have to be seen to be believed. We trekked to one of the higher points of the mountain to see an ancient hidden Hindu temple from the 10th century. Maxie told us the story of the king who built it for his private meditation space, and we immediately understood why. It is so peaceful and serene. After our climb we stopped for award winning traditional Indonesian coffee and deep fried banana prepared by one of the friendly locals. The atmosphere and view was amazing and breathtaking. We then went back down the mountain and drove to a local warung for some lunch. The most delicious meal I have had so far during our stay in Indonesia - kupat tahu and iced jasmine tea. Just what we needed after all that walking. Our final stop was the hidden waterfall at the base of mt merapi. We chose to observe from the viewing platforms above, but if you have the energy Maxie will take you to see it from the base. The view was spectacular even with fog obscuring the mountains on this particular day. Maxie returned us home safely and farewelled us with one more trademark smile. We are so incredibly grateful for our experience and would recommend Maxie's tours to everyone. Matur nuwun to Maxie and the kind villagers who hosted us ❤️
I had an awesome, fun-filled experience hiking up to Selogriyo temple, trekking a bit of the rice fields and lastly to the waterfall with Fery :). Fery was super informative and thoughtful, helping to carry my bags and provide balance when I had some difficulty wading across the river. He was also flexible and we stopped at a kopi luwak shop to try it, on the way back to Jogja. This tour is highly recommended for anyone who loves nature and culture!
Best guide (Bima) well preparared Who guide us through this beautiful experience to see nature animals and the real old indonesian spirituality
Bima (pur guide) was really well prepared and really supportive. I really suggest the experience. It allows u to live the real old indonesian experience. An escape from city reality
This was an absolutely amazing tour! We started with the waterfall as Mount Merapi was visible in the morning and it was spectacular! Walking down to the waterfall is a bit slippy, but Seta was very kind, helpful and patient. Crossing the river was great fun and Seta took loads of great pictures and videos then and throughout the day that will make for fun memories. After the waterfall, we trekked through beautiful, unspoiled rice terraces which were spectacular and took lots of photos of the landscape and even some cows grazing. Seta explained all about the rice-growing process and the other crops we saw as we walked and drove through the landscape. He answered our very many questions and found us a great lunch spot which was very picturesque and had great food :)! This was an incredible tour and a great break from the bustle of Yogyakarta! It was a spectacular day with a kind, funny and informative guide who made a wonderful experience even better!
An absolutely amazing tour and Seta is a wonderful tour guide! We started with the waterfall because the Merapi was visible, which was an amazing sight before trekking down to the waterfall. It was so much fun to walk through the water and get close to the waterfall! Our second stop was the rice fields, which we walked through and enjoyed the many great vistas. The temple at the top was cute and nicely quiet. Seta was a very careful, helpful, pleasant, fun, and interesting guide to spend the day with. He took several pictures and some short videos, which he turned into a longer video, and shared all of those with us afterwards, which was a nice touch. For those who like beautiful nature and some light hiking, I highly recommend this tour!
Seta was a phenomenal guide with a story for everything. He took bunch of photos for us and adapted to our needs. Thank you!
Deep into the desas outside of Jogjakarta, we walked amidst the Selogriyo terraced padi fields to reach the temple. We get to see how the villagers live, amidst their daily activities. Stopped for drinks and snacks of home-grown/roasted coffee, boiled cassavas and fried bananas at a kiosk overlooking the valley of pagi fields was really amazing.
Great tour with a great guide. Super relaxed and allows you to escape the busy life in Yogyakarta and at other major attractions in the area
We had a wonderful time! The waterfall hike and volcano vistas were incredible. The rice fields were also stunning. We had a fantastic time with Salma. He was engaging, knowledgeable, kind, and a fantastic and safe driver. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to escape the city hustle into the quiet paradise of Indonesian countryside!
We had a wonderful trip to the rice fields, amazing view and the best time with Deny, he is both a great driver & guide. Showing us the beautiful local places within the fields and not to touristy spots with a wonderful view.
We had a very good experience on this tour. Our guide Bima was very attentive to our needs and shared interesting insights about the region, its nature, culture and history. The first stop of the tour was a trek to Selogriyo Temple, taking us through stunning rice terraces before arriving at this serene temple. The second stop was a waterfall which offered a breathtaking views with the Merapi volcano in the background. We also went down to see the waterfall up close. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the beautiful nature surrounding Yogyakarta :)
5/5 – Amazing experience We had an incredible time on our tour. Our guide, Bima, truly went above and beyond — I would highly recommend him. He was friendly, professional, and very insightful, sharing meaningful cultural knowledge that really enriched the experience. He made us feel comfortable throughout and was always helpful and attentive. The tour itself was fantastic.
A fantastic day with our guide Bima Very knowledgeable and interesting about the rice paddies He picked us up from our hotel nice and early and gave us information on what we should wear and what was expected for the day. A lovely guy Would definitely recommend him as a guide
We had an amazing day with Arma. The best part was certainly the hike through the rice fields, it’s just incredibly green and beautiful and peaceful. But all places we went to felt somewhat remote and special. We went off the beaten paths quite a lot and didn’t see many tourists. Instead we met some of the rice farmers and went to a local coffee production. Arma was a super relaxed guide and shared a lot of knowledge about rice cultivation, local customs etc. I’d recommend bringing a hat and maybe a snack. Highly recommended trip!
Had fun but definitely wear outdoor shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Also carry an umbrella and rain jacket just in case. We got lucky it rained during our ride to the next stop and it stopped when we arrived so we didn’t get rained on while outside. But the heavy rains made it unsafe to walk down to the waterfall so we missed out on seeing it up close. Overall it was still a good experience and the locals were very nice and friendly. Our tour guide was also great and spoke good English.
I had a great day with the guide - Mas Deny! He was super friendly, attentive, and made everything easy and enjoyable.I visited a beautiful waterfall with an amazing view of Mount Merapi in the background, it was stunning. Then we stopped at a cute coffee shop in the rice fields and had really good coffee (with a spectacular ricefields view). We then visited the Selogriyo temple with a lot of history, and it felt it was a special place. For lunch, he chose a lovely spot with delicious food, plus he took great photos during the tour. Highly recommended.
Do not sign up for this trip! It seems that the original company has been hacked. That it no longer exists and someone is stealing the money. I lost money on it today. I booked on TripAdvisor, and they never showed. My hotel called all the numbers associated with the company no answer. So my hotel called their friend who worked for the company and said this account has been hacked. I feel for whoever the company this was cause obviously some selfish person destroying it.
Visiting the rice fields was a truly refreshing experience. The landscape is absolutely beautiful, surrounded by lush greenery and the serene beauty forest. Our driver Arma was a great driver and guide. Great experience to scape the city buzz.
My guide to Candi Selogriyo was Dear Haidar. He's a great companion and very knowledgeable. He took time along the walk to tell me about the flora and fauna of the area. The views on the walk to the temple are stunningly beautiful so keep your phone or camera handy. The temple does not get many visitors but is worth a trip. If you are looking for something off the beaten track with beautiful scenery, this is the perfect trip and Dear Haidar is the perfect guide! You will not be disappointed!
We did several tours with Bima and personally if I have to choose one, it would be a hard choice between Borobudur and the rice field trekking. They are both very different, with the temple being just impressive, but the rice fields are beautiful and very enriching regarding people and nature. Bima made the experience unique with his vast knowledge of plants and herbs. Surprising, a perfect spot in the middle of the rice fields to have a coffee with excellent Quality, solar power, wifi and credit card payment. The Selogriyo temple is beautiful, and very well maintained. Thank you Bima
Dani, was amazing and really engaging, tell us so much about the local culture, history and environment we visited. Dani was great and we loved spending the day with him. Really enjoyed being out in the countryside amongst the rice fields
What wonderful day! The hike through the rice fields was beautiful and so much fun! Our guide Arma was very knowledgeable and engaging. Definitely recommend this unique chance to experience the beautiful Indonesian countryside.
We had an amazing experience today! Our tour guide Dani was super friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the area. He speaks excellent English, which made everything easy to follow and enjoyable. We were picked up directly from our hotel and brought back safely afterwards very well organized. A little heads-up: the hike to the waterfall is not for the weak. Going down was fine, but going back up… wow, that was a workout. Still, it was absolutely worth it. The scenery was stunning and the whole trip was unforgettable. Highly recommend this tour and especially Dani as your guide!
Beautiful scenery! The rice terrace walk is a steady fairly well maintained path-not steep until a few steps to get to the temple. After which there’s a stop half way down for a drink. Then it’s lunch. Then to a lovely waterfall. Short walk to see it from above so no need to go down & back up(steep) unless you want to go to its base. Our guide was a lovely chap who spoke good English & was very informative. It’s a very slow paced day.
Guided by the super friendly Arma we discovered the beautiful waterfall with the Merapi vulcano in the background and went to the ricefields with the temple at the top. A very nice day with great views and well guided by Arma with an extensive answer to all our questions. A recommendation for all travelers who want to explore the beautiful nature around Jogjakarta!
My girlfriend and I absolutely loved this tour! We were super lucky to have Anggoro as our guide! He was incredibly knowledgeable about the region. Throughout the tour he showed us so much about its culture and nature. Anggoro told us about all the plant species we encountered while trekking, including how they are used by the local population. He also explained how the crops system work. He told us about the history of the Selogriyo, including the meaning of the different statues and symbols present in this small, but beautiful temple. We were amazed at how thoughtful he was, always making sure if we were okay. Even before the tour began, he contacted us through WhatsApp to make sure that everything was settled. He went well beyond what was described in the tour description, recomending where we could have lunch and showing other places to visit, based on our interests. We could have not asked for a more dedicated, polite and helpful guide. Beyond the amazing guide, the trekking itself is stunning! Probably some of the most beautiful seceneary you will ever come across and beyond peaceful. To accompany the mesmerising views, the local population is extremely kind. Please make sure to try the local coffee, which is planted, dried and brewed on the hills of the Selogriyo temple! We left this tour extremely grateful to Anggoro and hope that more people get the chance to experience it for themselves!
Our guide and driver Thomas gave this experience as a tip. It is wonderful to visit these places. The nature and tranquility is very nice after the busy city or tourist spots. Thomas made the day complete by telling all kinds of things about the area and Java. Definitely recommended!
A wonderful experience in the Nature, Selogriyo is a peaceful spiritual place and the coffee is amazing
What a fantastic trip thanks to a wonderful guide and driver: Anggoro. He told me so much more than just what you're supposed to visit. He took plenty of time for photos and completed the entire itinerary in a relaxed manner. A fantastic experience!
Temple is a must see although it is not written in the travel books, I found the way to the temple astonishing. Try the local coffee and take some home. Ask for Anggoro if you take the trip. He is not only professional and friendly but he will also give you some additional information that you can’t find online
Really Nice walk through the rice terraces with very few tourists. Much more authentic than Bali. Cute little temple and Nice waterfall
Amazing trip! The rice terraces were absolutely stunning, and the hidden waterfall makes impression. Selogriyo Temple has such a peaceful vibe, and the whole trek was the perfect mix of adventure and chill. Our guide Sigit was super friendly with extensive knowledge. Great escape from the crowded city — totally worth it!
Thomas was my driver and guide today. He made it a really memorable experience, thanks to his local knowledge, attention to detail and easy going character. And I really appreciated the excellent photos he took of my experience through the day. Thanks Thomas. Highly recommended.
Fantastic guide and such a pleasure to head out to the rice fields! Highly recommend as an add-on to the main temples!!!!
The tour was amazing. Hidden gems off the beaten path. Highly recommend the tour. We had a beautiful day and could see the volcanos without a spot of clouds. Our guide Didik was amazing. He provided us with a lot of information and is absolutely excellent at taking photos and videos!
We saw the farm and the temple, had a coffee at a beautiful viewpoint, and then went to the waterfall. Arma also took us to a great restaurant for lunch. He knew so much about the history of the area and farming. Really a trip highlight!
We went to the rice terraces, hidden waterfall and temple and Thomas was very useful and very entertaining! He gave us insights into the history of the temple and also proved a great camera man for photos at the waterfall! It was a great experince and one I would definitely recommend.
The sights are really spectacular. Although a little challenging at tomes for a couple in their 60's we still did it and glad we did. The views from above the waterfall are great as was it from the bottom. The scenery while walking on the trail through the rice paddies was beautiful. Overall a great day away from city. Also our guide, Hibza, was great
Our guide Sigit provided a great tour. He took us to beautiful places in the middle of the rice fields. In the afternoon we stopped at a very delicious restaurant and visited a breathtaking waterfall. A great day thanks to our guide Sigit! Definitely recommend.
Thomas picked me up in the morning and it was fun from that moment onwards. As the day started with a clear sky, we changed the plans and went for the waterfall near Mt Merapi first as it allowed us to have a good look at the volcano. Wise suggestion by Thomas as the clouds rolled in in the afternoon. Thomas answered all of my questions very well and I know sometimes I can ask many, and if he didn't know the answer, he would connect with a local to clarify. He showed me the different stages of rice, explained about the coffee beans, the various animals that we encountered. Heck, we even saw monkeys but I think that was kind of lucky, or was it ;) ? All in all I would definitely recommend a tour with him!!!
