This was our 4th food tour in China on this current trip, I have to say this was by far the best one we have done. I have to admit I had forgotten about the tuk tuk aspect and thought it was a bit touristy BUT it was loads of fun driving down narrow alleys and crowded little lanes. The food, well there was nothing I did not like, in fact I loved it all but if I had to pick favourites, numb and spicy soup, sour dumplings and pancakes, all fantastic, not that you will ever go hungry on this tour but our guide Buren, offered seconds or offered to order anything else that caught our eye. Trust me come HUNGRY and pace yourself. I love the morning tours as you catch a glimpse of city life before being overrun with workers and tourists, the markets were amazing, I swear it was sensory overload, you could come here everyday and see something different. I very special mention for our guide Buren, he went over and above in making sure our group, 4 people, were comfortable, catered for all our needs and went to the trouble of providing local recommendations for local specialties, we tried one of the recommended restaurants and it was truly amazing. His knowledge on the local cuisine was outstanding. If you do one tour, DO THIS ONE , I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Itinerary
Meet your experienced English-speaking local guide near Xi’an City Wall, travel off the beaten path in your own tuk-tuk, venturing into hidden streets and quaint alleyways within Xian’s city walls to find popular eateries. You will visit 4-5 sit-down eateries and street stalls, sit down next to locals as you sample a variety of dishes, plus a walk through a local market.
See how Xian wakes up in the Muslim Quarter by tuktuk, taste what’s so special about breakfast in Xian by visiting family-owned restaurants and street stalls that are only open in the morning…they sell out before lunch. Start by visiting our favorite breakfast shop that only sells one thing, and watch your food prepared fresh to order. Walk through one of China’s oldest and largest markets to see what’s in season plus a surprising selection of pets, local art, and unique hand-made gifts. On your way to the market, stop by one of the area’s most popular street stalls for a sweet treat. We’ll keep the biggest surprise a secret until you see it for yourself!

Good introduction to Xian cuisine. Our host, Buren, was the best tour guide for Xian. We were treated to some of the best dishes I tried in my visit to Xian and the rest of my China trip. We were given brief historical background of the dish and the eatery itself. Keep up the good job and would consider attending the Evening tour in the future!
Brilliant experience and very knowledgeable guide in Buren! Super helpful and accommodating for the kids who couldn't take too much spicy food, and some great insights into Xi'an life.
Fantastic food tour with our guide Buren. We were travelling as a family with our young kids and he made it a great experience for all of us. From the amazing food and welcoming owners, to arranging slightly less spicy options for our kids to eat alongside us when the chilis started building up, we all had a great time. Whizzing through the Muslim quarter in a row of tuk tuks is great fun by itself, but Buren's knowledge of the food and history, plus the yummy food itself made this a real highlight of our trip to China.
We really loved this breakfast food tour with our guide Buren. He was extremely knowledgeable and really made the experience unforgettable. We loved getting around on the tuktuk, hearing all about the history and information on the dishes & seeing the markets. Buren was attentive to all of our needs and there was no pressure to finish any of our dishes (although most of the time we did!!). Buren was a fantastic guide. Will be recommending this tour to our friends and family! Thanks again Buren! Renee & Neil.
We met our guide, Buren, for a morning tour of the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an on a Thursday. We started off our morning in a TukTuk, and our first stop introduced us to a most delicious beef pancake at a tiny shop in one of the many alleyways of the Muslim Quarter. Buren was a wonderful guide. He shared stories about the history of the Muslim Quarter, the local shop owners and the history of the food we were eating. He also took us through the Muslim Quarter market, which is only open two days a week (and we were fortunate that our tour was on one of those days). We made 5 stops in all, and they were all well-chosen and delicious. I only wish our stomachs could have held more room for all of the wonderful things we tried. Buren and Lost Plate made this tour one of our standout experiences in Xi’an. Highly recommend!
Highly recommend this breakfast tour. Our guide Buren was lovely, knowledgeable about Xi'an’s food culture, and took us to some great hidden gems, including a fascinating walk through the biweekly local market. It was an authentic introduction to the city’s breakfast scene. He was also a great help when we wanted to look for chili at the local market and even shared with us a couple of recipes for chili oil later. Thanks for sharing with us your passion for XI’AN food!
Buren took us to some amazing places that we never would have found on our own! We were able to shop in the street markets and talk about life in Xi'An. This was wonderful!!
Our guide Buren was amazing...is such a foodie and so knowledgeable about the food and area. This was my second time with Buren and was even better!
Great immersion into the morning taste buds and shopping of the locals. A great combination of walks and tuk tuk rides. The best was the grand finale of sour soup dumplings. Jane, the tour guide, was most helpful and knowledgeable in showing us around.
Our tour guide is Bu Ren, he is a foodie, very friendly and knows so much knowledge about food. We really enjoyed the tour, he explained about the food we ate and the history of the food and Xi'An. We definitely recommend this tour when you visit Xi'An.
We went on the breakfast and morning market tour with Deal in Xi’an and it was amazing. No tourist traps, only local food with detailed English explanation of the history and culture behind the cuisine and Xi’an. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Xi’an.
We had a wonderful Sunday morning tour with Diehl, we had our 3 year old with us and it was very easy to manoeuvre around with the use of the Tuktuk. A great way to learn more about Xian’s food culture.
This tour was absolutely exceptional. Spending the morning with Buren was one of the highlights of our time in Xi’an (and China overall). He was friendly, knowledgeable and made the experience feel authentic. Visiting the morning markets with him gave us an insight into local life that we would never have gained by walking through on our own. His knowledge and love for the local food was evident, and we enjoyed everything he recommended we try. The pace was great, and the TukTuk allowed us to see lots in the 3 hours - it was a fantastic way to experience a different side of Xi’an. We would absolutely recommend this tour as a 'must-do' to anyone visiting the city.
The quality of the bites, the experience of wandering through the morning market with a local guide, and fitting into a Tuktuk!!
We really enjoyed our guided tour of the market, street kitchens, a bakery and a couple of eateries off the beaten track. Our guide Byrne was very personable and knowledgable about the regional cuisine.
The morning food tour in Xi’an with Jane was such a fun and delicious experience! We explored the local streets and markets while tasting some of the city’s most authentic breakfast dishes
Had a great morning going on a breakfast tour with my guide Buren! The food was absolutely delicious and Buren made our group’s experience incredibly enjoyable with his warmth and great insights! Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Xi’An, you won’t regret it!
Tour Guide: Buren. We had heard Buren's name brought up by multiple of our previous tour guides as one of the best tour guides with Lost Plate and we see why. He was very kind and attentive, answering all sorts of questions, providing recommendations, and pointing things out all around the Muslim Quarter. The food was all very delicious and hands-down some our favorite food that we tried while in China. The combination of the delicious food and Buren's excellent care made this an absolutely fantastic tour!
Anna was an amazing guide. She was a pleasure to spend time with. She did a great job explaining the food and the history of the area. The food was delicious and plentiful.
This was a fantastic introduction to Xi’an generally, as well as its diverse food. Buren was a very personable and knowledgeable guide, and we really enjoyed our time with him, visiting long standing restaurants serving their authentic specialities. Easy to find meeting point. Highly recommend
Morning food tour led by Buren was fantastic. An excellent communicator with local knowledge of food and history. Sampled tasty dishes with unique flavors and textures, all prepared on the spot. A walk through the bustling market was also a major highlight.
We really enjoyed our tour of the Muslim Quarter guided by Buren, who was engaging, attentive to our needs and very sociable.
Would highly recommend this food tour to anyone interested exploring Xian cuisine! My partner and I had an amazing time with Buren our guide who took us around the Muslim quarter and introduced us to snacks and dishes mostly locals would know. We left with my bellies feeling full and excitement to try more Xi’an dishes.
We loved this food tour and did both this one and the evening one in Xi'an. I definitely preferred the morning food tour for the different food options and quality, and particularly the guide Jane who was super friendly and helpful and so enthusiastic. It's a great introduction to Xi'an.
On a rainy day, our family was the only one which meant that we basically had a private tour. Our guide Amber was so warm and friendly, as were our tuk-tuk drivers. They were able to accommodate us having 2 picky kids who don’t eat spicy food. Even though the kids didn’t like everything, they found some new favorites that they never thought they would like. We adults on the other hand enjoyed every bite! Our guide was not only helpful for food explanations and suggestions but with other local info for our trip to Xi’an. Our only regret is that we didn’t take this tour earlier in our trip to make use of Amber’s suggestions!
This was a great introduction to food options in the Muslim Quarter. It's an adventurous breakfast menu by American standards, with intense, spicy flavors, but the dishes were all excellent. The tour runs only on days when a street market is operating, which is lively and interesting. Best of all was our guide, BuRen, who spoke great English and is a true foodie, both in his enthusiasm for all things culinary and in his knowledge of the local food scene. The day after the tour he gave me a recommendation for Qishan noodles that might have been the best noodle dish of my whole trip.
I attended this tour with my wife and two girls (10 and 5 y/o) and mother in law 70+ y/o and we all had a blast! Needless to say it was fun for all ages! Buren (fabric man) our tour guide was excellent and really was the heart of the experience. He was accommodating (mother in law needed wheel chair, no problem), knowledgeable and just generally a very fun and passionate foodie that loves the xi'an food scene. The tour itself was very well planned with a great selection of locations. The use of tut tuts to navigate the narrow streets of the muslim quarter allowed us to cover a lot of ground and go really deep into areas where it was obvious that we were the only foreigners around. Likewise the food spots were truly authentic and not popularized with social media as evidenced by us being the only foreigners among the local diners. Buren also provided us with tons of local food recommendations which really added to our visit in Xi'an and Shanghai. Way to provide value even AFTER the tour!! Thank you again, and will absolutely recommend this tour with Buren!
The morning food tour with Buren was amazing! He took us to many local spots with authentic food that we wouldn't have been able to try anywhere else. Buren was very knowledgeable and passionate about the food. While other tours can feel inauthentic, this one felt like we were experiencing the city like a local.
We had a fantastic time on the Morning Market & Food tour this week (June '25). Our tour guide Buren was awesome - his knowledge of Xi'an's Muslim Quarter's history and culture taught us so much about the area. We sampled a variety of dishes - with a lot of the restaurants being local favorites with queues out of the doors and into the streets. Definitely don't eat before you start as we had enough food for breakfast, brunch and lunch! Alongside the delicious food we walked through the local markets and tried some fresh lychee & Plum Soup (yum!). Buren got in contact before the tour to provide trip details and went out of his way to cater to my vegetarian dietary requirements finding some alternative restaurants which was extremely thoughtful. We couldn't reccommend Buren and Lost Plate Food Tours enough - thank you!
We loved our morning food tour! The guide was great, and it came with a private Tuktuk to drive us around the city to all the food spots. The food was all great, really local places to give us insight into Xian and the guide was able to share a lot about the history and culture of Xian - highly recommended!
Five stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our breakfast food tour with Jerry in Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter was absolutely fantastic. We explored five different stops, tasting a variety of delicious local dishes, and enjoyed a walk through the vibrant market with so much to see. Jerry was an excellent guide—knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about the food and culture. Highly recommended!
Our guide, Buren, was so knowledgeable about the local food. Delicious things that I would not have tried without this guide. Very friendly guide with excellent English who was easy to chat to and offered advice and stored about the area. We even got to go into the kitchen and help make dumplings at the final restaurant.
We had a fantastic time on our morning food tour! It was the perfect introduction to Xi'an's food scene and checked all the boxes for what we were hoping to experience on our first day there. Our guide, Buren, was knowledgeable and created a warm, welcoming atmosphere for everyone on the tour.
I’ve done several Lost Plate tours and they have all been great, but I thought the one led by Buren was especially fantastic. It’s really clear that he is a real foodie (not just a job) and he was fantastic at explaining the food, answering questions, and making additional recommendations to pursue on my own. The tour gave me the confidence I needed to explore food in farther flung parts of the city. I couldn’t recommend Lost Plate more!
I really enjoyed the whole tour! The food is excellent, the places have history, everything is delicious! I really liked our guide Burren, he explained everything patiently and masterfully! I loved it so much
We had an amazing time eating our way through the Muslim Quarter with our expert foodie guide, Buren. Buren took us to 5 different spots where we sampled everything from the famous beef pancakes to homemade dumplings. He had a lot of fun stories and history to share with us and the food was absolutely incredible. He was very communicative and messaged us before the tour to check if we had any food allergies or restrictions, as well as asking if there were any specific foods we were interested in trying (there were, and we got to try them on the tour). He even went above and beyond after the tour by helping us with some recommendations for local breweries so we could explore the craft beer scene on our own. If we're ever in Xi'an again we will definitely do another tour with Buren. Thank you!
I cannot recommend this tour company enough. This was our second food tour with them and we were still blown away by the food choices, hospitality and all-around experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the beef pancakes and walked away feeling quite satisfied. Special thanks to our guide, Buren!
Wie hat a really great time at the food tour with our guide Buren. He went above and beyond to ensure that we had a good time. We experienced local breakfast foods and authentic restaurants and he gave us a ton of recommendations for things we asked. Thank you again for a great experience!
My husband and I have been on two lost plate food tours before this and always love the experience. Our guide was Buren who was the absolute best, made sure to check in with us the day before and continued to offer us recommendations after the tour at our request. I can tell when I’m in the company of a proper foodie and he really knows his stuff! The food was fantastic and the tour was well paced. Buren checked in with us often to see if we wanted any additional snacks along the way and was a delight to talk to. Highlights for us were the soup with meatballs and the pancakes, but honestly each stop is unique and delicious!
Buren was an absolutely awesome tour guide, who made the tour both informative and fun! We had a blast both trying the amazing authentic foods and seeing the variety of stalls at the market. Buren made the tour feel like a day with friends and we all enjoyed his insightful knowledge into Xi'an food and history. Would highly recommend this tour, and after completing this and a Beijing night tour, I will definitely be looking into attending more tours with Lost Plate in the future!
I have been on several Lost Plate Food tours all over China, but this one hands down, was my FAVE! Our tour guide Buren was amazing! He truly went above and beyond. Before the tour he texted me asking about my expectations and if I needed any suggestions of restaurants to try in town. His laid back personality made the tour felt like I was hanging out with an old friend. He's very knowledgeable about Chinese cuisine and explained what was special about each dish we tried. Going through the market, he let us try anything we wanted. Wonderful time! I wish I stayed in Xi'an longer just to get more of his recommendations of food to try!
We loved the tour! The food was delicious and very specific to the city. We would have never tasted it by ourselves. Our guide Buren was really helpful and friendly - it was absolutely great to meet him!
This was an amazing tour and a great way to learn about some of Xian’s culture and taste some truly fantastic food. We could never have experienced these things on our own. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun and spoke great English. Highly recommend!!
Buren has been the best tour guide, he showed us traditional dishes in Xi'an made by the real locals and family business shops. He is so passionate about food and gave us very nice recommendations to visit after. Thank you so much!
One of the highlights from our trip to Xi’an. I saw Lost Plate on a travel video on YouTube and thankfully decided to try them out. Our entire experience, from start to finish, was amazing and even with toddlers. Our guides Buren and Jennifer were awesome and super accommodating. They took us to eat the best food we ate in Xi’an and sprinkled in some wonderful commentary and facts. Great experience that we’d recommend to everyone!
Tour was fun, Our guide in troduce variety local foods. We learn a lot not just culinary, guide also show us about culture, way of life. Market was huge that easliy toJ get lost by yourself. It was lovely that we have a guide bring you to hidden location. Jennifer, our guide was very funny, enthusiastic and helpful.
We always enjoy doing a food tour in every city that we go to - Lost Plate was definitely the right choice for us! We loved them so much when we did their tour in Chengdu that we decided to continue in Xi'An; this time opting for the morning food tour to try something different. Our meeting location was super easy to get to/find. Our tour guide BuRen was prompt and actually met us early. He had messaged us the night before to ask about our food limitations, and make sure he can accommodate all of our needs. As a self described Foodie - we knew we were in for a treat! It turns out, we were the only 2 that decided to wake up early on a Sunday morning - so it was a private tour with BuRen. It turned out to be an experience! We stopped by very local places down alleys that we would have never ventured into ourselves deep in the Muslim Quarters. We enjoyed the delicious food with super friendly vendors. Since it was just the 2 of us, we were invited into the kitchen to watch them hard at work making the food. We even got our hands on making our own dumplings at our very last stop from a husband/wife team. BuRen was very knowledgeable and provided us with so much history. We happened to be there during their weekend flea market also - so BuRen took us down the busy streets to explore the area like a true local. We throughly enjoyed our time with BuRen as he was such an amazing tour guide - even offering to drive us back to our hotel at the end of the tour since it was on his way back home. Would highly recommend this tour - and Lost Plate - to anyone considering a food tour.
The tour was great! We had such a good time. The Xian food scene is diverse and unique. Our guide Buren was very helpful and told us many interesting things anbout food culture and Xian itself. He just has an amazing personality. We highly recommend this tour for all food lovers. You will see some hidden gems and try really delicious dishes. Both sit down restaurants and street delights. Do not miss this opportunity
We took the Xi’an Morning Food and Market Tour by TukTuk with Buren. What a great time we had! This tour is awesome with a very knowledgeable guide and we had so much food. Buren offered us an unique foods and his knowegle of the Muslim area was incredible. The next day we contacted Buren for a new food and within 3 minutes he had 2 suggestions. We took the noodle place and we were not disappointed with his recommendation.
