This tour was everything we hoped for. Our driver and guide Tim, was full of knowledge about both Beautrix Potter and the Lakes District. It was a relaxing, informative and immensely enjoyable morning. Highly recommend.

Itinerary
Your morning starts with a visit to Wray Castle for spectacular scenery and lake views. This is the holiday home where Beatrix first fell in love with the Lake District. There will be plenty of time for photos.
While on holiday, Beatrix visited many of the small villages in the area and Near Sawrey became her favourite. This village features in many of her "little books" illustrations. The Tower Bank Arms is immediately recognisable as the place where Kep, the collie-dog goes looking for the two fox-hound puppies to rescue Jemima Puddle-duck. You will be amazed when you see it, exactly like it is in the book! One of the reasons why Beatrix visited Near Sawrey so often was because while staying on holiday in the area, the Potter's coachman and his family were lodging at a farm there. That farm was Hill Top and is the one Beatrix later bought with the profits from publishing Peter Rabbit. She often visited her 'holiday home' Hill Top and wrote many more books here which were inspired by the people and the places around her in this beautiful part of England. We stop at Near Sawrey and Hill Top for you to see the locations which are so recognisable in the books and the place where Beatrix Potter lived. Entry to Hill Top IS included in the price of this tour. Your guide will take you on a guided walk through the village to show you actual places illustrated in Beatrix's books.
Close by Hill Top is Esthwaite Water where Beatrix walked while courting her future husband, William Heelis. This was a favourite spot for Beatrix who thought it "the most beautiful of the Lakes".
We now stop off in Hawkshead. Your guide will take you on a walking tour around this medieval village pointing out all of the important locations.
William Heelis was a solicitor who advised Beatrix about her land purchases. His offices were in Hawkshead village. They are now the Beatrix Potter Gallery.
Beatrix bought a lot of land in the Lake District and owned the beauty spot Tarn Hows. Here you will have a photo opportunity here.
Coniston Water is the third largest lake in the Lake District and is the straightest. You will have a short stop here to admire the view and see the famous fell of Coniston Old Man towering over the village and the lake. Beatrix also owned a lot of farms in the area and as we travel down the Yewdale Valley back to Ambleside, you will see Yew Tree Farm, famous as a location in the film "Miss Potter".

Tim was a delightful guide to Beatrix Potter’s world! My daughter and I loved how specific and detailed he was, while also giving us amble time to explore each tour location. Would highly recommend!
We had a lovely time, our guide was wonderful and so knowledgable. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There were great stops all along the way. Only issue was the pick-up in Bowness, we arrived a few minutes before our departure time but the van had come by 5 minutes early and picked someone else up. It was rectified, we were picked up and enjoyed the day.
Our guide, Tim, was excellent: well informed with excellent clear and cogent presentation. We found his way of putting the history and context of Ms Potter’s work into perspective was outstanding. A delightful fellow as well.
Our guide, Tim, was superb. He gave us lots of information about Potter and was interesting and engaging. The places he took us were relevant and interesting. The one letdown for me wasn't connected with Tim at all, but the visit inside Potter's house. I thought there would be a guided tour inside the house, with explanations of each room and the items within. The visit to the house was self-guided in that you could look all around, and there were guides available to answer questions, but no brochure or information posted.
Tim was a superb guide who made this tour most memorable. So much more to Beatrix Potter than an author of children’s literature.
Informative entertaining and relaxing. Beautiful look into Beatrix Potter’s life and legacy. Tim was very knowledgeable.
A very good small tour experience. The guide was knowledgeable, and provided lots of information. Pointed out sights sometimes missed, and painted a well rounded picture of the life of Beatrix, and the key people who were an influence on her life. Tour was well paced, thoroughly enjoyable experience
The guide was very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the Beatrix Potter home and the surrounding area. It was one of our highlights on our visit to the Lakes District.
Another great tour with English Lakes Tours after the Brontes. I thought Beatrix Potter just wrote children's books. I was wrong. I learned much more about her on the tour with our extremely knowledgable guide (and small group). She was a powerhouse when it wasn't common for women. She was brilliant: an activist, an environmentalist, a botanist, a philanthropist, a farmer, and much more, which you will learn about on the tour. We also drove thorough beautiful areas of the the Lake District. I highly recommend this tour.
A wonderful tour with our driver and guide Tim. So much more to see, so informative , he new everything you needed to know about Beatrix Potter. Her house and grounds were full of amazing treasures. We Loved it. I recommend this tour, great memories. Thank you Tim.
If you wish to learn about Beatrix Potter's life, her wonderful characters & her inspirational work preserving the farming way of life in the Lakes District, this is the tour you need! Tim was so knowledgeable & took time explaining places. Loved the Hill Top Farm visit. Wonderful experience!
We experienced an informative and educational tour that was entertaining as well. Our guide was very generous with sharing their knowledge and captivated our attention. We got to see more of the Lake District and to discover what makes this area so special and so important. The tour is good value for money. We felt that the duration of the tour was just right and got back in time for lunch. The tour group size is small, just a handful of us. The group is friendly and relaxed. You can be yourself and take your time. If you love to learn more about the history of this region you will live this tour.
Tim was excellent. He has a great way of setting the context and then pointing out th essentials of each location along the tour
Best tour guide and driver ever. Learned so much about Beatrix Potter. You must go on this tour to get a deeper knowledge of one of England’s greatest artists writers and environmentalists.
Outstanding tour. Our guide, Tim, was fantastic. We learned so much about Beatrix Potter in a morning.
Pretty comprehensive tour of Beatrix Potter area. Scheduled to gain entry to Hill Top house. Many illustrated buildings pointed out in the area. Our guide, Tim, was extremely knowledgeable about B. Potter, history, and the area. Never could have done this on my own, and would have missed a lot. Definitely book for a tour of Beatrix Potter territory.
My tour was conducted by Tim. We were a small group, which was nice. The transport was comfortable, and I was glad to be travelling with an experienced driver on some very narrow roads! Tim is very knowledgeable and has a lovely way of highlighting places that appear in Beatrix Potter's books. He allowed plenty of time for us to browse at stops and to take photos. This was a very enjoyable tour of which Hilltop was the highlight.
We had a wonderful time on this tour. Tim was very friendly and blew us away with his knowledge of Beatrice Potter and her life in the Lakes District. His stories and knowledge as he drove us around this beautiful area was awesome. I never realised just how interesting she was and what she did for the area's conservation. The van was comfy, Tim was great, Beatrix Potter's scenery was breathtaking and we got to see where Tom Kitten and Jemmima Puddleduck lived. What a morning!
You will see so many places that Beatriz memorialized in her book illustrations - cottages, gates, gardens etc. - and you can compare the reality with her pictures. You will see so many picturesque spots and learn so much about Beatrix's life. A wonderful experience!
We spent a day touring the lake district with Tim and Jill of English Lakes Tours. Tim's enthusiasm for and love of the history that makes the Lakes District unique created a superb experience which set the stage for learning about the author Beatrix Potter. We learned so much about how Ms Potter and the eventual Mrs Heelis lived a life on her terms. The result is a legacy which continues to entertain children throughout the world and to preserve the Lake District for generations to come. Well done Tim! I am not ignoring Jill who was along capturing photographs to share in future media. Thank you both for a wonderful experience well worth the time.
Highly recommended tour. Not only does it cover all things Beatrix Potter but our guide was full of information on the history of the area. Hilltop a definitely worth a visit. Very comfortable transport and both the guide and assistant helpful and friendly
This tour was so beautiful and our guide was excellent! We saw some amazing scenery and fairytale settings. Our guide was so knowledgeable and had some fun stories, we really learned a lot, Beatrix Potter was so much more than a children’s author. We also appreciated the small group arrangement. We would definitely recommend this tour and this company.
This was such an awesome tour. My wife and I had been looking forward to it for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about Beatrix Potter and showed us a lot of little things that we would have missed if it wasn’t for his expertise in this subject. He also offered a great knowledge of the area and other important people from the area.
Tim, our guide told a wonderful story as he skilfully navigated the narrow winding roads. His description of the places of interest was well-crafted into a whole presentation. Included extensive info about Beatrix plus fascinating facts about the countryside. Highly recommended.
Excellent tour. Don't drive here yourself. The roads are very narrow and there 's lots of traffic. Book yourself this tour so you can relax and enjoy the landscapes. Our guide was very knowledgeable.
It was a wonderfull tour , especially the guide Tim made the tour worth it , he told us so many details about Beatrix Potter and has the most beautifull voice to listen to . Top*****
Tim our tour guide is a credit to your company! From collecting us from the station first thing to leaving no stone unturned, very informative facts and information, really made our day. Would highly recommend this Beatrix Potter tour.
If your only familiarity with Beatrix Potter is from her wonderful children's books featuring anthropomophised animals and their adventures in an idealized English landscape, then the Beatrix Potter tour put on by English Lakes Tours might surprise you. Potter had a depth that went well beyond the fantastically detailed illustrations and stories that still captivate and transport millions of fans, and it was this depth that the tour did such a good job of exploring. Her commitment to conserving the Lakes District lands she loved so well, her determination that women landowners should not be treated any differently, and her serious bona fides (and scientific paper) in the field of mycology are all a revelation if you only know Potter from her “bunny books”. Gillian (and her driver with nerves of steel) did a fabulous job of bringing all of this to life and fitting it in with her well-known books. Highly recommended!
I highly recommend this tour - very enjoyable 4 hour tour taking in places associated with Beatrix Potter. Tim, our driver/guide had a wealth of information and stories to share with us as we visited places around the Hawkshead/ Coniston area. Personally, I would have preferred less time at Hill Top and more time in Hawkshead, but that’s just a minor issue, As a visitor without a car, I really liked getting off the beaten track and seeing wonderful country views. I will definitely book again with English Lakes Tours when I’m visiting the area.
Informative fun full of knowledge that you don’t know. It was a lovely way to spend a morning travelling the beautiful countryside Beatrix got her inspiration from. Our guide Tim was full of information with images also to match up along the way. My daughter didn’t know much and came away feeling inspired by Beatrix and her life. Thank you to all who follow in keeping her wishes.
Tim was a wonderful guide. He tells his stories in a very engaging and animated manner. Learned a lot about Beatrix Potter and her great conservation efforts. Highly recommend the tour!
This Beatrix Potter experience was fantastic - definitely worth it. We (myself and my wife) learned a lot about her life and there is a lot more to her than just her books! The staff were very knowledgable and very friendly the entire trip. Tripadvisor needs to update its age restrictions for this trip as only children over seven years old are allowed.
Excellent tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and gave lots of local tidbits about Beatrix. The tour itself was exceptional. I felt as if I have an understanding of her life and seeing where she lived and wrote brings her stories more to life than before. I highly recommend this tour.
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the experience quite enjoyable. I can’t recall his name, unfortunately, but my family really appreciated having him as our guide.
We spent the morning with Tim learning all about Beatrix Potter and her interesting life. Our guide was fun and informative! We enjoyed learning about the area, learning about several real-life connections to parts of her books, and learning about her life as a farmer and nature conservator.
Our tour guide was very friendly and informative and could not have asked for a better guide. Very enjoyable tour.
An absolutely fascinating tour revealing a huge amount of detail - Beatrix Potter homes, associated locations, personal networks etc.. Our guide Tim was a superb host and provided encyclopaedic knowledge about Potter, her history, her lakes district activities etc. Even having read her biography, we learned even more!
Superb tour. Amazing number of Beatrix Potter related sites, locations, buildings. Tim was a wonderful source of information. One of the best tours in our long and varied international travel experiences
We went on the Beatrix Potter half day morning tour. When we arrived at the pick up location, we found that we were the only people on the tour - probably because it was out of season and just after half term. Tim was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and friendly. At no point did we feel rushed and we were very happy with the tour. We also had great help from Phil prior to booking the tour as we had a couple of queries. When we're next in the area we will definitely be looking at some of the other tours they offer as we had a great experience with this tour
This tour was magical! Walking in Beatrix Potters footsteps was unbelievable. Her home is stunning and very endearing. Tim our guide was so knowledgeable and more importantly, passionate about his job/tours. We learnt so much from him and can’t wait to do it again in the near future. Don’t hesitate.. just book it you won’t regret.
I had a chance to do the Beatrix Potter tour in June 2024. Traveling alone can be uneasy, but the tour operator was remarkably friendly and made it very easy. After getting picked up at the Windermere train station we were on our way! Throughout our journey I was remarkably impressed at how knowledgeable the tour guide was. He really demonstrated expert insight into the life and writings of Beatrix Potter. I was particularly impressed with how he pointed out specific places that are highlighted in her books. During our travels he went above and beyond to ensure everyone’s comfort. Thank you for an excellent experience!! This was certainly one of the best highlights of my two week trip!
Guide was very knowledgeable and even showed Beatrice Potter books to demonstrate the specific sites she drew in her books. Learned a lot about her that I didn’t know and saw many beautiful sites.
The entire trip was wonderful due to the knowledge, friendliness, and service provided by our guide (Ash).
Tim was our guide and he was extremely knowledgeable. We learnt a lot more about Windermere and Beatrix Potter. Loved this small group tour. We would definitely recommend this tour.
What a wonderful morning trip delving into the life of Beatrix Potter! There was just a mass of detail that we knew nothing about. Tim, out driver and host, became a friend indeed during this trip that we shared with two Americans and two Aussies. We drove at a leisurely pace (or rather Tim drove) through the wonderful Lake District where Beatrix Potter set her stories. We had time to wander round Hill Top, the house that Peter Rabbit bought (or rather his sales funds bought). This was fascinating. Stories about Wray Castle, Tarn Hows and Hawshead Village added to our delight. So many links from the views we had to the illustrations in the “little books”. Tim added details about The Campbell Family when we saw Coniston Water in addition to the sight of so many farms that Beatrix bought. He added to that a summary of Wordsworth’s life in The Lakes. We drove over roads so narrow that a bus couldn’t have used them, feeling safe in Tim’s hands at the wheel. Thanks Tim for a great morning out in the sunshine that you specially arranged for our trip.
Tim was the best tour guide I’ve ever had, and I’ve been on a lot of tours. He was interesting and incredibly knowledgeable as well as funny and friendly. The tour took us to more sites than we expected and taught us so much about Beatrix as well as the history of the area. He answered all our questions in detail with great enthusiasm. I highly recommend this tour!
Great tour. Tim was so knowledgeable, funny, and generous with information. An excellent driver through many tight situations. Just an all around nice person. Can’t recommend highly enough. Of our 10 day holiday this was the high point in large part due to Tim.
Tim, our guide, was a delightful font of all things Beatrix Potter and her life in the Lake country. We learned a lot about the Lake country as well as Beatrix Potter’s life associated with it from a teenager through her adult life, successful career as an author and farmer/landlord. The tour also went to several villages and a private lake that were meaningful to Beatrix. I would highly recommend this tour as both a learning experience and also a fun way to become familiar with the lake country’s picturesque farms, villages and one lane roads!!
Tim's accounts of Beatrix Potter were so interesting. I learned so much about this amazing woman in such a wonderful way. Tim used Beatrix's stories and drawings to illustrate his accounts and taught us that she was sO much more than her stories. Everybody should learn about her - she is an example to the world. Thank you Tim!
