Itinerary
The building that now houses our ticket office is one of the oldest canal related buildings in the area, dating to 1774 and is grade II listed. It was originally a warehouse for goods being transported on the canal, hence the large cranes outside- one facing the canal, the other facing our cobbled car park, formerly stables for horses towing the craft. Somewhere near the site of the wharf, although the exact location is now lost, was Winterwell Hall, a medieval manor whose remains were lost during the building of the canal basin.
The boat passes a winding hole in the part of Skipton known as Snaygill. Directly opposite the winding hole can be found the Craven Nursing Home. This is built on the site of Snaygill House, and was initially built as a public house, the Copper Beeches. Snaygill was formerly a separate town to Skipton. It was listed in the Domesday Book as being owned by William the Conqueror, formerly by the Earl Edwin. The land was shown to be six carucates in size and production- one Carucate is the land 8 oxen can plough in a single season, roughly 120 acres.

Excellent afternoon tea. Great food and the staff were excellent. One of the best canal cruises we've experienced. Would highly recommend.
We had the savoury afternoon tea which included a pork pie and sausage roll. Food was really nice and fresh and the staff were excellent. The canal trip was 2 hours and everyone on board looked to be enjoying themselves. A must do if visiting Skipton.
Lovely gentle cruise through Skipton and along the canal. We saw so many different farm animals & wildlife. Best part was having a very brave beautiful Swan come right up beside the Boat 🙂🦢Food was really nice. Especially the scones & Lemon cake.
The weather was beautiful the day we went and the whole experience from start to finish. Glad we chose the Afternoon Tea Cruise. The separate tables made for a romantic experience.
The service and food was lovely and the atmosphere was relaxed. Unfortunately the bridge was broken and we had to reverse a way back which they did brilliantly. Then an older lady took ill needing medical care and an ambulance. The team were excellent here assisting her and liasing with the medical team. Then another female staff member joined us to give drinks and make sure everyone was ok. They were all great in an adverse situation and we felt safe and looked after at all times. Well done team it was a tough one. Would definitely recommend the trip to others
A great relaxing few hours out. Food great, service great. Friendly staff aboard. Tea and coffee plentiful. This was a birthday present experience for us, we originally came in March but were unable to take the river cruise as we had our dog with us. Absolutely perfect afternoon.
We enjoyed spending two hours gently sailing along the Leeds and Liverpool canal whilst enjoying a tasty afternoon tea. The food was all very fresh and the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. This all made a lovely change from the hustle and bustle of life. Would definitely recommend.
Just really good value. Food great. And very relaxing. I loved the fact that they kept topping up tea and coffee!
Wonderful afternoon gently cruising down the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Booking in was easy, helpful onboard crew, spacious in the seating/dining area and great views. Our cruise took 2 hours, and was full of interest with the scenery changing from hidden views of Skipton, to the gorgeous scenery all around Skipton. Plenty of wildlife spotting, interesting watching crew operate the bridges, etc…. The food was delicious and filling, a lot of variety. Boat had a board bar with a good selection of soft drinks as well as alcohol. Nice atmosphere as well on board. Boat had an onboard toilet and washroom. There are some steps down onto the deck, but crew are helpful, and offer advice. We would definitely do this trip again, very enjoyable, and good value for money.
Having spent the weekend in Skipton We had booked the canal trip for afternoon tea. We booked with Skipton boat trips The staff were polite , the food was excellent The canal trip lasted 2 hours it was well worth every penny
Brilliant vibes - lovely fish n chips and great curtious polite team
A lovely couple of hours spent on the canal. Staff were very friendly and the afternoon tea was delicious and not too much
The Afternoon Tea Trip on the canal boat is a really lovely treat. As a huge fan of afternoon teas, I enjoy locations and venues which are just a little out of the ordinary, and special. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience at The Ritz recently and I have to say that the food served on this trip could match it. Of course, ambience wise, this Afternoon Tea experience is a complete contrast, and none the worse for that. The trip is very relaxing (and gentlemen are not required to wear a jacket and tie!) the food delicious, the pace slow as the boat glides along the canal – another world. And no waiter anywhere, even at the Ritz, could be more attentive than Olly. In fact, all the staff are very friendly and helpful. A delightful experience and one I recommend wholeheartedly.
This was an enjoyable experience. We had a bottle of wine with our tea which made it especially relaxing. The staff was efficient and friendly. It was well organized in that everyone was assigned a table before entering the boat, so there was no pushing or shoving to get to tables. The ride was long enough, though not quite as scenic as I had hoped. The pastries tasted better than the sandwiches which could have used more filling.
Well organised , attentive staff, pleasant cruise, just what you’d expect . Good value for money
A great experience, we had enjoyed the boat cruise with afternoon tea. The staff looked after us very well.
We had a fantastic time on the boat. My son was really looking forward to the boat trip and he enjoyed it. My Mother in law was very pleased with the surprise boat trip I prepared for her. She said that she has been to Skipton so hundreds of times but never went on the boat. The boat is decorated festive with Christmas music. It’s a great way to start the festive period!
Amazing afternoon tea, with Festive cakes. Great range of speciality teas - I had the Thowra Estate Assam The special Christmas Coffee was also good.
The boat was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and attentive Would recommend for a good couple of hours relaxation !!
We had such a great time last September that we were keen to repeat. So popular we couldn’t book a place that suited till November but again, totally worth the wait. Friendly, helpful staff. Punctual, courteous service. Well organised. Afternoon tea also up to standard. Decent sized serving with mix of savoury & sweet and lots of good Yorkshire tea. Although we set off at 2.45pm, the light lasted long enough to enjoy the autumnal riverbank scenery then we saw the lights coming on at dusk which made a lovely contrast with last year’s excursion. Thoroughly enjoyed. Will need to return for a Springtime experience.
Amazing Lots of space on board and comfortable. Lovely staff very pleasant and helpful Really good that they know how to get the less abled on and off safely. Lots of food for the afternoon tea. Brilliant that there are lots of dietary options that are also of excellent quality. Lovely 2 hours. Would recommend.
It was lovely really enjoyed it and there was 11 of us booked but obe couldn't make it so they fave us a afternoon tea in a bag. You bigger scones but everything else was perfect great service too .
The afternoon tea looked nothing like the pictures shown. The sandwich’s were very basic with sparse fillings. The scones were very nice , although tiny . The boat was cold had to sit with coat on. The chap serving was good
Axgreat afternoon cruise 2 hours of relaxing with the provided afternoon tea. Crew were polite, attentive. A pleasure to journey with
On time the journey was extremely pleasant relaxing and the crew polite and attentive. The food was just the right amount was fresh and tasty. A thoroughly enjoyable trip
Hubby and I had a lovely relaxing two hour afternoon tea cruise. I knew what to expect foodwise before we went as I had looked at previous reviews on trip advisor and seen photos. The food was simple but nicely presented and tasty. The tables are set up so there are perspex screens between so although all the tables were occupied you couldnt hear other conversations. The cruise itself was very serene with lots to look at along the journey. Staff were fabulous. Our cups of tea were filled several times and the staff were friendly and helpful. There was a bar where you could purchase additional drinks at very reasonable prices.
Very friendly and thoughtful service. The crew is attentive and makes the trip a real pleasure. Beautiful views of the dales and up close look at the Yorkshire canal system make for an interesting and relaxing experience. Dairy free and gluten free options are provided on request
What a wonderful trip, made even more enjoyable by the attitudes of the friendly staff, especially the two young gentlemen who served our food, and tea/coffee. I was bought this trip as a birthday gift. It was originally planned as a different trip from another supplier, which fell through, and this was second choice. I have to say though, it certainly wasn't second best, it was wonderful. I hadn't fancied afternoon tea, but it was first class, and I enjoyed very bit of it. The tea and coffee were bottomless, and as good as you'd get in a high class coffee shop. All in all, I can't recommend it enough.
Great experience, friendly staff, food was lovely, service was good, value for money, would definitely recommend!
Absolutely wonderful. My elderly father did not want to go and doesn’t like afternoon tea but even he said how nice it was and he really enjoyed the day. Unlimited tea and coffee (even decaf) throughout the trip in fact Ben and Harry were at the table every few minutes. Both my elderly mother who can hardly walk and my 85 yr old dad who uses crutches managed the 5 steps in and out of the boat with Ben & Harry’s help. We traveled 1hr 20 mins to get there and I’d definitely go again. There was even an elderly blind man on our trip and he was handled very carefully and helped to his seat. The food was delicious too.
On a recent visit to Knaresborough, we wanted to experience and explore Yorkshire, so it up to me to book various tours and trips. Never having been in Yorkshire before I was reliant on the good old internet. I don’t know how I managed it but, all my choices were bang on the money and everyone enjoyed whatever it was, I had booked for them, so lots of brownie points for me ! So, with that in mind, and after many hours on the trusty iPad, one of the things I booked was an afternoon tea …. On a canal boat !! Well, my partner and I, along with her sister and her man, went on and enjoyed an afternoon tea cruise with Skipton Boat Trips, and it was brilliant from boarding the boat to disembarking. And as if I had arranged that as well, the weather was perfect with the sun shining beating down on the calm waters of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, making for the most picturesque journey up the canal (and back again). [ OK, there was a shower while we out, but I’m glossing over that 🤭] As the boat navigated through Skipton’s core, past other canal boats, and barges, we enjoy an engaging journey on a traditional narrowboat. The staff on board were fantastic, and they were a friendly bunch that served us our afternoon tea. Not only that, but they also jumped off the barge and ran up the footpath to open and close the gates and bridges, Two members of staff [ and I’m sorry I’ve forgotten your names, but you know who you are ] , were very attentive, and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. They were always there to top up our teacups or coffee mugs, and their cheery attitude they really added to the whole trip. We were well looked after, and it was clear they genuinely enjoy what they do. The afternoon tea itself was delicious, with the choice of sandwiches, fruit scones with strawberry jam and cream, and decadent desserts. All served with unlimited tea and coffee. And no …. We didn’t take pictures of our afternoon tea …. Why ?? Anyway, it was just the right amount amount of food to enjoy as we gently cruised along, taking pictures and soaking in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales scenery. We went all the way up to Bradley before we turned to come back. A very pleasant ‘drift through the canal’ We all agreed that ”I had made an excellent choice” of ‘what to do’ while we were away, and if you have the time, and you are in Skipton, this is obviously a must-do activity for anyone visiting the area. The combination of the stunning views, the delightful food, and the great staff made for a memorable and relaxing afternoon up and down the canal. We are already planning our next trip, ”doon the water”! On a sober note, while researching for our trip I had to read a lot of reviews ( just like this one ), and I was reliant on 1) The advertising and 2) The reviews because not coming from the area I was totally dependent on what I gleaned off the internet. So, I was a bit concerned about the one-star reviews and the people moaning and complaining about one thing or another, but to tell you the truth, from the get-go everyone ( and I mean everyone) was friendly, courteous, helpful and made the trip what it was. Boat trips are especially difficult to manage you have limited space, and unlike a hotel the longboats actually move, need maintenance and an expert hand on the tiller. So, thank you Skipton Boat Trips, you have 4 fans north of the border.
We found the trip to be impressive informative courteous and friendly. The food was excellent and very enjoyable. The scenery was amazing and the sunshine made the whole event a wonderful experience. We would highly recommend the trip, and we would go again Thank you to all involved.
The trip was very relaxing the staff all good and the hot coffee was lovely and plentiful, but sadly the afternoon tea was not the best, Sandwiches with boring fillings, and to be honest not very 'filled' the smallest scones I've ever seen in my life, with clotted cream and strawberry jam, if you don't like strawberry hard luck they had nothing else, and 3 tiny little cakes that had come from a frozen pack, really not good. But like I started with the trip was very relaxing.
I took my 83 year old mother for afternoon tea and she thoroughly enjoyed it . It was one of the most relaxing afternoons she has had ,with lovely food and all the tea you can drink .staff are very friendly and very helpful with getting on and off the barge . Such a relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely book to go again next year .would highly recommend.
A lovely relaxing trip along the canal with the great bonus of a delicious afternoon tea, excellent service, lots of refills of tea and more food than we could manage. Beautiful scenery, but the highlight was the crew ! What a fantastic and hard working multi-tasking crew they were, serving tea, opening the swing bridges, running up and down the tow path and leaping aboard. They kept us well entertained. Thank you so much. Highly recommend.
Overall we had a nice relaxing afternoon on the boat and the canal. The afternoon tea was average, would have been nice with a wet wipe to wipe sticky fingers as I think someone had wiped their hands down the back of where I was sitting !! I bought a small bottle of Prosecco just a pity the tea and coffee were not regularly topped up. My husband asked 3 times for a top up. A hire boat decided to crash into the side of the boat we were on and the captain didn’t even make a comment over the loud speaker just to make sure his passengers were safe and ok. It was probably just about worth what we paid but we probably wouldn’t do it again I’m afraid.
It was a lovely couple of hours on the boat. The two guys on board were great and busy up and down. The food was great. I do feel that more information could have been given as we went along the journey explaining where we were and the landmarks around us, the relevance of the canal - history of the area and bridges etc.
Absolutely fabulous afternoon tea on The Dalesman with a bottle of Prosecco 😁 The afternoon tea itself was fresh and delicious and the boat trip was a perfect couple of hours of total relaxation. The guys working the cruise were lovely, very efficient and friendly. Would highly recommend this trip if you’re visiting Skipton
Had a lovely afternoon. The cream tea was excellent and plenty of tea served. Staff were friendly and efficient. Excellent service.
Afternoon tea cruise was excellent. Sailed the canal for 2 hours during which afternoon tea was served. Tea and coffee included but bar serving drinks also available to purchase from. Food was very good and views from the boat amazing.
We had a lovely 2 hour canal boat trip with Afternoon Tea. Boat left promptly and staff were quick to bring round tea or coffee. Quickly followed by table service of drinks from the bar if wanted. Our afternoon tea was well presented and very nice. Gentle two hour round trip. Staff on board very friendly and quick to bring round drinks. Very enjoyable way to spend a sunny afternoon.
Arrived early to check in the lady was very helpful in advising where to park our car We went on board around 1430 for an afternoon tea cruise on boarding was greeted with a good afternoon name please was then told where our seats were We soon set of going through the countryside and immediately they came round with tea and coffee quickly followed by the afternoon tea which was served in a nice relaxed manner the crew were very efficient from the start informing us what was taken place and serving the meals All in all it was a throughly nice pleasant afternoon can recommend it100%
The boat was lovely and the staff great. The trio itself was lovely, despite the best efforts of self-hire folk trying to crash into us 😂 However, there was a problem with our booking and we weren't initially included in the itinerary. This was resolved quickly enough, but we were then not served that which we'd paid for (because there hasn't been a prep for us due to us not being in the itinerary), which was a shame; I essentially paid the afternoon tea price for a 2 hour trip and a sandwich (I don't like scones etc). A shame, because otherwise this would have been a really good experience.
What a fantastic afternoon! The crew were friendly and helpful, the afternoon tea was delicious and the views were beautiful. My friend was temporarily on crutches, and the crew's help made it very easy for her to get on board. Highly recommended.
Allow plenty of time to get parked. We nearly missed the boat because of the queue at the parking meter. The food was nice and fresh but the scones were very small. The cruise was very nice, but no running commentary on history etc. because there was really nothing to comment on, just lovely views of fields and trees.
This was an excellent, relaxing way to spend a Saturday afternoon. During a two-hour trip on the Leeds to Liverpool canal we had a pleasant afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones and cake with unlimited tea and coffee. Other drinks were available from the bar at reasonable prices. One improvement suggestion for the owners would be bigger scones but that is a small point in an otherwise excellent trip
We were a family party of 6 ladies celebrating an 80th birthday and this was an ideal treat. The young chaps serving us were courteous, friendly and efficient. The afternoon tea sandwiches and cake were very fresh and high quality, with as much tea / coffee as we wanted. They made a lovely fuss of grandma, even producing a “Happy birthday” cake decoration (with no prior warning). A few words of information about the history of the area would have been nice, to compliment the scenery, however still a most enjoyable experience..
Doesn't depend on the weather as it's all inside. Really nice selection of food. Very friendly staff
We all had a fantastic time and would highly recommend the trip we had afternoon tea it was delicious and the staff were brilliant
