Great opportunity to bike in a beautiful area of New Zealand. The trail can be challenging at times, but definitely worth doing.

Itinerary
We'll drive 30 minutes from the East by West office in Wellington out to the start of the Remutaka Rail Trail to Wildfinder Kaitoke. From here you'll be breifed on the trail and how the bike works before heading off on your self guided adventure!
Start point for your self guided 28km ride at Kaitoke, on the trail, you’ll start by cycling through the native bird-filled Pakuratahi Forest. Follow an old railway line over bridges and through tunnels, while pausing, if you like, to check out information stations detailing the enormous task of constructing the “Fell” railway system - a first for New Zealand at the time, and one of only a few around the world. Once you reach the summit, you will stop for a picnic lunch on a large grassy plateau next to the remnants of a historic station. After lunch, enjoy an exhilarating (but easily controllable!) descent to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa, with views of some of New Zealand’s stunning farming heartland. Follow the path along the countryside to Featherston and we'll see you at the Royal Hotel.
We'll pick you up at the Royal Hotel in Featherston, before we shuttle you back over the Remutaka ranges, down the Hutt Valley and back to Wellington (arriving approx. 3.30pm back at the East by West ferry office at Meridian Building, waterside 55 Lady Elizabeth Lane, Queens Wharf, Wellington 6011)

From start to finish we had a wonderful time! The meeting point was easy to find, our guide Issac was so friendly and knowledgeable and the ride itself was one I’ll never forget, the scenery was extraordinary! I highly recommend, you won’t regret it!
I am so glad that I did this! I felt really safe on my own as I was well set up with a tracker, first aid kit, a tire repair kit, map, water and lunch. I also met some nice people on the track who encouraged me along the way. It only felt scary when I did silly things with the bike and went too fast. I rode BMX bikes as a kid so I have some experience on bikes. If you don't have any experience you might want to practice on a mountain bike a bit before going on the trip and have a reasonable level of fitness. I would recommend borrowing a pair of their gloves, following the instructions they give you and be careful of others on the track in narrow places, especially people walking.
Very scenic and a once in a lifetime experience. Isaac was top class.
My husband and I recently did the Remutaka Rail Trail Mountain Bike Explorer Cycle Tour during our trip to New Zealand on Anthem of the Seas, and it was one of the highlights of our visit. The team picked us up directly from the port, which made the whole experience incredibly easy and well organised from the start. Everything ran smoothly, and we always felt like we were in good hands. The ride itself was absolutely beautiful. The Remutaka Rail Trail is stunning, with amazing scenery the whole way along. It was such a fun way to explore the area and enjoy the outdoors. The picnic lunch provided was fantastic and a really nice touch during the ride. The team also made sure we were back at the ship with plenty of time before departure, which we really appreciated as cruise passengers. A wonderful experience all around — highly organised, friendly team, beautiful trails, and a great day out. Highly recommend! 🚴♀️🌿
Well organised. Staff polite and informative including describing how to call for assistance when there is no cellular service. Route to be taken clearly explained including where those who may feel uncomfortable have the option of taking a slightly different route or the option of walking. For those not used to cycling any sort of distance they can hire an e-bike, instruction on there use is given. The route itself has some beautiful scenic views with opportunities to take photos
Beautiful ride on what was formerly a railway track. Impossible to take a wrong turn along the way. Weather was perfect which was a big plus. The ride is very easy, downhill or flat most time. E bike not needed iny my opinion. Isac from the operating agency was a really nice guy. I enjoyed the provided snack. I wish the trail was longer but that's nobody's fault naturally.
A real mountain biking experience without the hassle. They take care of everything for you. The bikes were excellent quality. They provided a helmet as well as a lunch and a bottle of water. The scenery is spectacular.
Thouroughly enjoyed the variety if ride & scenery. Well signed. Firat self guided ride Ive ever done in an another country
Great ride through beautiful nature. We started at Maymorn to add a few extra kms to the ride. It was a little steep, even for us as quite experienced riders, but we enjoyed it. We crossed some tunnels and bridges, all with it's own historic value. Great ride, I can recommend it. Just for those that are not too fit, please take the ebike, it'll make your ride much more enjoyable. Thank you team Wildfinder!
First part incline is very easy. After summit, be sure to take it slow and avoid a wipe out, especially if you are like me and don’t know what loose rocks can do. And walk the bike if you want to. Save some time to ride the 10km gravel path to Featherston :)
Our guide was wonderful. It was a fantastic day for a bike ride. The ride was beautiful, so far it has been the highlight of our trip.
Many thanks to Dave, Isaac, Alex and the rest of the Wildfinder team. This was an incredibly well organised rail trail cycle, with communication from the team a standout. Prior to the cycle: Excellent communication from Isaac and Alex regarding pick up times, locations, and forecasted weather conditions. Received confirmation updates even up till the night before. The team were very accommodating and organised transport from Wellington Station to an early drop off location Maymorn (for an extended ride). Day of the cycle: Dave and Isaac ensured all equipment were checked and fitted, including mountain bikes, helmets, lights, first aid kit, repair kits, and emergency equipment. Appreciated the big emphasis on safety, including an explanation of emergency SOS GPS use (provided). Received a briefing on the entire cycle track and terrain, with maps and instructions. As a big bonus, the team were also kind enough to provide water and a packed lunch for you to enjoy on your travels. The ride itself was an incredible experience, words cannot do it justice. The trail was well signed. The swingbridge, summit, and lookout were an absolute highlight (excellent spot for lunch). Can get windy at some points, worth bringing a jacket. After the cycle, Alex and Dave were at the Cross Creek Carpark pick up location ready to transport you back home. Summary: Wildfinder did an exceptional job organising this cycle and ensuring I was kept in the loop throughout the process. They have a big emphasis on safety which was consistent throughout. The ride was spectacular, and worth the detour to Wellington in itself. I would highly recommend this team and tour to anyone keen for a ride.
Nice views, great service, everything went smooth and they provide you with everything you need for a great day!
Excellent bike ride . Easy to navigate as it’s well signed posted . Great views and well organised. Highly recommended

The rain was pouring sideways when we started. I asked the team if it was safe to travel, no support or cellphone. There response was looking at each other then a shrug of not knowing? The wind gusts were between 50-60 miles per hour and the bridge was unpassable on bike and even standing up as we passed over. We needed to hunker down and sidestep. At points we (experienced mountain bikers) felt it unsafe to bike as the wind ripped down the mountain to a steep edge. We had rain gear but it was completely ineffective. There should have been more support. We do not know the area or the inclement conditions. It felt unsafe at points. Traffic was halted, both directions on the highway due to unsafe conditions. I would love to do this again on a better day but the company should be thinking about the safety of riders while still providing this excursion.
An amazing way to explore the beautiful natural surroundings of Wellington. I couldn't have had a better time and will hold onto this memory for a long time. Do yourself a favor and book this one. I promise you won't regret it.
Great service. Great trail. Great lunch. The entire experience was well worth it. While Wellington is windy, it is worth leaving town and enjoying the mountains.
Issac was my guide. Took great care of me. Loved the tunnels, and bridges. Creek running along part of the trail. Too windy (wind gusts) to cross suspension bridge on my bike the day I rode but spectacular sight to look down on the steep canyon below.
Even in the cold rain we had a blast. Isaac was a great host and did a wonderful job prepping us for the trail and for our first time using e-bikes. The lunch was good and we had plenty of food. We would love to come back and do this again!
Great views and nice trails. Lot's of information placards along the way. Pick up and drop offs were well explained.
Isaac was an amazing tour ooerator. Prompt, courteous, engaging and a good driver. An asset to the tour! Thank you Isaac. The ride was very plesant, with a nice path and not too many hills. We had a nice packed lunch too. Very happy with our day out. Thank you
This was one of my favorite excursions I did on the north island. The trail was absolutely beautiful! Even though it is recommended for all, there are a few more challenging portions of the trail, so keep in mind. Would highly recommend this trip!
This more a review of the company that the tour itself. Our cruise ship was unable to port in Wellington due to the harbor being closed due to gale force winds. The operator quickly processed a no hassle refund.
Communication was good, preparation was good and equipment was top notch. Beautiful views and stunning scenery. The only thing you should know if you are booking this is that you should be confident on a mountain bike. The track for the most part is manageable by most - however the last 4-5km is tough mountain biking - very narrow path, lots of rocks to navigate around and on the side of a pretty high hill. We ended up walking our bikes the last little part (and we are pretty fit). If you have the energy after the first part of the ride take the option to continue to Featherstone - an additional 10km on a flat, rarely used highway with some lovely views and lots of animals to see along the way.
Great solo ride, some nice views and a nice day out if you like cycling or want to do something different Fairly intermediate route, if you go for the e-bike option you’ll find it a breeze but if you want a good workout go for the standard bike as the route I did is mostly level or downhill with some incline If you do the route in reverse it is mostly uphill and you will definitely need an ebike
My husband and I recently did the trail starting in Cross Creek and ending at Brewtown - the opposite direction (called ‘reverse’) up the Fell Incline and adding on the Hutt River Trail. It was a very windy day (at one point, I was blown off my bike), but otherwise sunny. We went midweek, so the trails and Brewtown were quieter than we expect they are at weekends, but still friendly folks around. Pros: beautiful route with interesting information points, wonderful views and fun aspects - like the suspension bridge at the well named Siberia. Good bikes (we had ebikes) and quality lunch provided as part of the package. Pickup and return to our home in Wellington made accessing the trip very easy and convenient. Delays to pickup time alerted via text. Explanation etc of bike features at the start. Cons: somewhat lacklustre customer service. (We note others have commented on this). The confirmation email says the company would contact us the day before to confirm and discuss the trip. We heard nothing so texted them at 1830 including asking about the wind and received a short text in return. In the event, with the strength of the wind and gusts we would not have been able to complete the trip without our ebikes, and it would have been helpful to have been warned that we would be cycling into wind for most of the trip because of the direction we had chosen. Forewarned is forearmed. As this is a self guided tour, the information /route sheet could be improved. There are several junctions, where just adding the name of the road would be simple and very helpful. At one point, we called the company as the description and mud map were confusing. Similarly, just adding the name of the “blue dairy”(another junction) would give confidence to people from out of town. We were warned when dropped off to give the company 45-60 minutes advance warning by text of when we wanted our pickup to return home. Accordingly we texted the company as soon as we arrived at Brewtown just before 4pm asking for a pickup in 45 minutes. This was not acknowledged until half an hour later ( due to “being on a long phone call”) and we were then told the lift would be there in about 30 minutes. We waited outside the brewery until 5.45 - having been warned they do not pickup after 1800 - so were thinking we might have to call an Uber to get home. A few small changes would have meant we felt we had an excellent day.
We recently had the opportunity to ride yet another of NZ's great cycle trails. Wow! We especially enjoyed this trail as each section was so different and we enjoyed the history along the route. We commenced and ended in Day's Bay riding pretty cruisy over the 3 days as the weather was fairly kind to us. Stayed the first night in Upper Hutt with great hosts & had a great night). Our accommodation for the next night at Waiorongomai was excellent - peaceful rural setting except for the howling winds which disappeared next morning. Most of all much thanks to both Dave and Alex for their great communication before and along the route, highly organised accommodation, meals and shuttle services. Also, thanks to the shuttle driver who kindly dropped our gear back to Wellington Top 10. Highly recommend Cycle Remutaka (by wildfinder) and a must do trail.
Had a great day even with the weather not been very cooperative. Dave was extremely efficient and well organized, got back to me quickly and offered an alternative to the standard tour as we were bringing our own bikes. Great service and well run, will definitely use these guys again when we try for another ride in better weather, and maybe even extend to the 3 days. Well worth it !
We started our trip from Petone and was greeted by Alex who set us up with our bikes and maps/instructions for the first day of cycling. Our bags were taken and delivered to our first accommodation which was great to not have the weight on our backs! On the second day we switched to e-bikes and Dave was really kind and accommodating, arranging for the e-bikes to be switched at the beginning of the Remutaka trail. The ride through Remutaka was amazing, even though it was a bit wet - still so much fun! On the 3rd/last day we were collected by Alex again from Orongorongo, went by the bike shed to collect our bags/drop off the bikes and then she kindly took us back home which was so very much appreciated on a wet day when we were pretty tired! Thanks so much to Alex, Dave and the team for everything, we absolutely loved cycling this trail and all our interactions with Cycle Remutaka from beginning to end was amazing. I highly recommend a trip with them.
Dave organised a great 3 day ride for us. The bikes we hired were excellent. The accomodation was top notch, with great meals . We really loved the varied scenery and the remoteness of the coastline. Weather perfect, which was an added bonus. Thanks Dave
We did a 3 day hire starting and finishing at Petone Wharf, including a day in Martinborough. We organised the trip from the UK and Dave patiently answered all of my questions politely and promptly. He met us at the agreed time and place. The bikes and kit were as he described. The ride was really interesting and we benefitted from brilliant weather. Dave then picked the bikes up from our accommodation in Petone. I had every confidence that if we had got stuck Dave would have bailed us out. Superb service! Many thanks Dave.
My wife Nicki and I recently completed the Remutaka Cycle Trail from Days Bay. We did the trail over 3 days, which we thought was just the right amount of time to do the full circuit in. As it meant you had sufficient time to stop and look around at the many historical points of interest, an take in the breathtaking scenery. An also meant you could split the time on your saddle, to a reasonable amount per day. We would also highly recommend Dave from everyone’s adventure, as we found Dave to be very organised, friendly and reputable to deal with. An we will definitely be recommending Dave to our cycle group for doing the Remutaka Cycle Trail n the future.
We recently completed the 3 day cycle trail leaving from Days Bay with the intention of doing the full circuit and finishing at Days Bay as well. Unfortunately the 'wild coast' part of the trail was exactly that... wild, windy and rugged. We toughed it out until Orongorongo and then called Dave for an early pick up back to Days Bay. Dave was super friendly and very helpful with great knowledge about the area and the track itself. I had ongoing problems with my hired bike which he tried to remedy and then replaced without an issue. If you require a company to organise your trail experience then I wouldn't hesitate recommending Dave and his team.
Excellent. The standard of serve and follow up could not be faulted. A little tough going back into the wind towards Days Bay from Orongorongo
A great day out. Dave was friendly, helpful and made sure we had an awesome day. The trail is an easy ride, but the tunnels make it so much fun. The Summit Tunnel is a massive highlight! If you are considering a day out on the bike, do it with Dave!
Fantastic Cycle Adventure. Well organised and well supported . Cruisey day 1 cycling by Hutt river. Spectacular Rail Trail Day 2 and Rugged coastal scenery Day 3 . Took one e-bike and one conventional mountain bike... both excellent quality. Great accommodation..first night spectacular views at home stay and second night rustic mini farm stay. Fab food. Highly recommended.
A group of four of us with average levels of fitness enjoyed a wonderful cycle ride over the Rimutaka Rail Trail on Saturday. I planned it earlier in the year, after contacting Dave at Everyone's Adventure and I really appreciated his prompt responses and his ability to easily accommodate our groups' particular requirements. Two of us hired e-bikes (one of us had never ridden an e-bike before) and two were on ordinary bikes. We chose to stay in Martinborough and made the easy trip to Featherston on Saturday morning to catch the train through to Maymorn (plenty of free parking at the station). The train trip through the tunnel only took 20 minutes and as arranged, Dave was there to meet us with our hire bikes. He gave us a good briefing and ensured one of the group had a GPS tracker attached. We were also provided with plenty of water bottles, first aid kit, puncture repair kit, lunch and snacks. Each bike had panniers to carry any of our gear. We all thoroughly enjoyed the trail which included tunnels, bridges and a variety of landscape along the way. We had our packed lunch at the summit and the leisurely journey took us approximately four hours. With the benefit of GPS, Dave knew exactly where we were at any time which was most reassuring and was there to meet us at Cross Creek as we finished. He then transported us back to Featherston train station, from where we were able to head back to our accommodation and out to dinner for the evening. This was a really enjoyable adventure which we had looked forward to for a long time and we highly recommend that you contact Dave at Everyone's Adventure when organising your trip as his helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and professional manner will ensure easy planning and a wonderful time
Great day out for our family of 4, including 2 teenagers - 14 and 16 years. Trail had good variety of terrain, views and features. Cycled easily from Kaitoke to Cross Creek car park and we only ever cycle when on holidays. Gusts of wind kept us on our toes. Excellent door to door service from Dave who was friendly and professional. Lunch was delicious. Highly recommended.
I have done this trip twice so far this year with a biking group. On one occasion we drove and parked in the car park...The other ride we travelled by train from Lower Hutt to Maymorn station it is an easy 10 ks ride to the summit, along a well formed and gentle track; lunch, then through the tunnel (you will need a torch!! and down into the Wairarapa which is well overdue for an upgrade, with $3 mill being budgetted to be spent over the next year. Then the cycle track along the side of the main road to Featherston for refreshments, then caught the train back to the Wellington side. It needs some planning but is an excellent day out providing the weather is kind. You need to be quite fit for this trip into the Wairarapa, , as you currently need to dismount and push your bike across a creek and up the narrow track to the track proper....this is what most of the 3 Mill $ will be spent on.....perhaps. Its a supa day out. Our group plan to go again soon, once the weather improves.
We were a group of 4 over 50's out for some adventure with back up if required. Great support and encouragement from Dave. E bikes delivered to two after day 1. Terrific accommodation. Highly recommend. Sensational weather and views. We were even randomly visited by a seal along the beach at morning tea, not even at the seal colony
We hired bikes from Dave for 3 days...they turned out to be better than our own ones so we were stoked! Gear was all supplied including detailed maps of each section which we often referred to along the way. Awesome ride - Thanks Dave!
In September I did a 3 day supported Rimutaka Rail Trail cycle trip, organised by Dave at Everyone's Adventures. As I was travelling alone, I took up the 'supported' option. This meant everything I needed was organised by Dave, including pick up in Wellington to start at Day's Bay, bike and all gear, accommodation booked along the trail, food and drink, luggage transport, GPS tracking and emergency beacon, and maps. I can't speak highly enough of the attention, organisation and support that Dave provided. He communicated daily to check how things were going and also provided me with extra drinks and fruit left hanging in a tree when I wasn't very well on one of the days. If you are considering cycling any or all of this trail, organise it with Everyone's Adventures. If doing the 3 days of cycling, a reasonable level of fitness and confidence on a bike is helpful. It is not that technically difficult, but there are unrideable sections on day 3 where you need to push the bike through black sand or over rock fans. I believe that sometimes these are cleared a bit with graders, but you should be prepared just in case. Just see it as part of the adventure! The scenery is beautiful and varied day to day. For me Day 1 was along the Hutt River, Day 2 was through forest, along the rail trail, through tunnels, and then a long country road, and Day 3 along the coast. The bike I had was great and the saddle bags were perfect for carrying food and extra clothes. You could consider an E-bike if you are unsure of your fitness to ride any or all of the trail. I started and finished in Day's Bay - loved the sense of achievement! It is important to have good comfortable riding clothes, with alternatives for weather changes, and ensure you have all the food and water you need. There is nowhere to purchase food and few options to get more water along the way. I stayed at two great B&Bs that Dave organised - both different but perfect in their own ways. I only met one other bike rider on the trail when I did it - pretty quiet. I loved the solitude and remoteness....... but would be a great trail to enjoy with family and friends!... Maybe next time! Val (Melbourne nurse)

We had a good time to bike even it wasn't mostly sunny. Green looked clearer and more beautiful under a little cloudy weather.
This tour gave us an opportunity to experience a true nature of beautiful Wellington.

Had a challenging but great 3 days cycling the Rimutaka trail. Spectacular scenery and interesting sites along the way. No major hill climbs, mostly flat and steady. You don't need to be an Olympic cyclist to do it - we saw a group of older people - one being 80 years old on the trail at the summit. Dave was super helpful in sorting us out with bikes, gear and recommendations on accomodation etc. Highly recommend.
We biked the Rimutaka cycle trail over 3 days in April as a family made possible by Dave Woulfe at Everyone's Adventure. Dave was awesome right from the first enquiry email - he was professional, responsive and made good suggestions with an itinerary and accommodation. Dave transported our luggage from place to place so we could ride freely. He was very flexible which gave us options throughout the trip. The trip is very manageable for those capable of 50 kms a day on a bike. Ocean Beach ride is spectacular, we were blown away but be prepared to ride, push, carry for approximately 10kms along the beach. This added to the adventure for us. Great to finish at The BikeShed where Dave was waiting with our bags. Couldn't ask for better service from an operator - first class!
My partner and I did the Rimutaka incline section of the rail trail starting at Kaitoke. Dave picked us up from our home in central Wellington and dropped us to Kaitoke with all gear needed and even a delicious lunch. We then got picked up from the other side and delivered back home again. All in all it was a great day made a whole lot better by the wonderful service by Cycle Rimutaka. With the all inclusive trip provided by Dave and company it was an easy day and a wonderful ride. Daves friendly and easy manner meant that the drives were engaging and enjoyable.
I was looking to spend a day outdoors enjoying the hills and beaches of NZ. I found this outfit right here on Trip Advisor, and how happy I am that I found Dave. This was such an awesome day! It stared out with Dave picking me up, promptly, at my downtown Wellington hotel, at exactly when he confirmed with me the day before. Whisked me an 4 others up to the trail head. We were all in fact on different rides, but he was able to satisfy each riders levels with different rides on the day. My ride started over the summit to Cross Creek. What a nice easy ride up to the summit tunnel, and what a great intermediate ride down to to Cross Creek. As scheduled Dave was right there to pick me up and get me down to Ocean Beach for the last part of my day. From Ocean Beach, I rode along the cliffs and beaches over to Orangorongo. It was a great ride, with a lot of effort. This ride did take an intermediate+ ability, as it was over a lot of rocks, sand and rivers. But oh, how much fun it was. About 2.5 hours later, I arrived to my destination and as planned Dave was right there. I was gone from 9am-6pm that day, and the trip was worth it, a tremendous value. I would've expected to pay more. Of course, we had perfect weather, as it was Sunny the entire day with no winds. From what I hear, that happens only a few times a year in Wellington. I'm looking forward to my next trip to Wellington and David's Cycle Rimutaka. Thanks Dave!
We were looking to do an active adventure aside from our two week cruise through New Zealand. Dave was everything and beyond. We hit bad weather on our trip so were delayed a day getting into Wellington, but no worries, Dave altered everything and was at the port with all the great bikes ready for our trek through the Rimutaka Rail Trail. Everything went so smooth - equipment was top notch, snacks, water and a delicious lunch was waiting for our adventure. He helped all of us adjust to our bikes and off we went. We happened to mention how much we enjoy wine and would love to taste some more if he could recommend it. At the end of our bike ride, he took us to 2 great wineries as a bonus. We still made it back to our ship in plenty of time. Dave was very organized and easy to communicate with. Easy excursion if you happen to be on a cruise. Highlight of my trip for sure!
We spent most of the day cycling the Rimutaka trail on a beautiful summer day. (Lucky it was not too hot or windy). My kids agreed that was the best part of our holiday in Wellington. Wide pathway, gentle incline, dark tunnels. Mention must also be made of the wonderful staff at the Cycle Centre in Upper Hutt, including owner Andrew. We needed to hire 3 bikes for our family. Did not make advance reservation. They had only one bike left. But somehow, they made available a brand new bike and got a third one belonging to an employee, to ensure we were not disappointed. At $100 for 3 bikes, that was extremely good value.
