We had a change of plans on our cruise, and we got in a day earlier than expected, so we were keen to book something to do. We decided to book the half day LOTR experience because that was all that was left, but it was excellent. We got to go to the Weta workshop, which was just out of this world, even my Mum who is 85 and NOT a LOTR fan had a great day. The commentary from Richard was great, and the places he took us too to show us the sites were fantastic, and easily recognizable. We were lucky enough as our group was the only people on the tour to be able to extend it to the full day tour, which made our day even better. Great work Richard.

This day was absolutely fantastic..we had a great day. Stan is a really good guide with heaps of knowledge about the area. He went out of his way to make our day extremely enjoyable. Weta production studio was very interesting
The tour included a trip to the WETA Studios, which was very informative and lots of fun and then went and visited some of the filming sites for Lord of the rings.
Our tour guide/driver Josef was very nice and knowledgeable. My wife was not feeling well and had to be back to the cruise ship upon arriving at the movie studio. He was very kind to take her back to the ship while I was touring the studio. It was too bad that she was not with me to take photos each other with materials displayed at the studio. After visiting the studio, Josef took me and two other guests to the forest where several scenes in the movie Lord of the Rings (LOTR) were taken. Josef provided good explanation with humor how they were taken. He had a slow pace for me (79 years old) to handle steep hill.
An amazing experience, I had so much fun. Enthusiastic and very knowledgeable staff. The grounds are well cared for. I highly recommend!
NIce … really nice. Josef was great, very knowledgeable. And the first stop, the park, certainly got you in the right frame of mind for WETA. That by itself made the trip worth it. When you add up the smaller group, Josef and the workshop tour, you get value.
My wife and I had an amazing day from start to finish. The tour operator kept us updated leading up to the tour, meeting us on time as per their instructions. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of local culture and had great information to share regarding everything to do with the “Hobbit”. The studio tour was full of great props from the film giving you a behind the scenes in the making of the films.Plenty of laughs and a chance to snap some pictures towards the end. The tour was finished off with a short drive to one of the many filming locations, giving us a chance to take more photos getting a real feel for how the films were made. Highly recommended
Great for any LOTR fans and tour guide was full of knowledge and great for a bit of a laugh. Enjoyed it
We really enjoyed this. Never realised how much went on behind the scenes. Also great to visit some of the filming locations.
That there is walking through the forest, which is beautiful but in some areas quite steep. But a wonderful day and the weather was excellent.
Great day with lots of LOTR places and scenes back story. Fascinating place. Always smart if possible to gather the first LOTR movie before coming. It makes the tour come alive. Our tour guide, Stan, was fabulous.
Had very knowledgeable and pleasant tour guide and driver. Tour of Wetta was quite remarkable. Go for it!
This place is straight out of a fairy tale! Or at least that is what it feels like. It is so pretty and absolutely fantastic to see the hobbit holes where a bulk of the shooting was done. The guided tour was spectacular and very well organized.
Loved this experience, great guide in Wayne. The Weta workshop is amazing and impressive especially if you love movies
Our driver Wayne was great and the actual tour was a lot of fun. WETA is a super cool place to visit, especially if you're a LOTR geek! But even if you're not it's still pretty neat to see how everything is done - and they have their hands in so many other films!
Great tour…the tag team LOTR/Hobbit pop quizzes thruout between us (mostly my hubby) and Lester was super entertaining…and we learned new book & film trivia from each other. We started our day with the Mt Victoria overlook…canNOT decide which way to look…stunningly beautiful. And the Mr Toad’s Wild Ride to the top! Rock solid driving skills! And I cannot say enough about the Wētā Workshop🤩 ahhmazing…recommend going to their website for full info on their tours and GO! Lester also very kindly managed personal reenactment photo sessions for all guests. Very patient and amenable. We loved it!
Beautiful tour on the LOTR locations that allows us to see Wellington under a different perspective! We had a fantastic guide, Lester, that shows us perfectly and passionately all the places (it was like to be in the movie!) and let us know a little bit more about the Māori culture. Thanks a lot!! It was a wonderful experience! Marta e Giancarlo
Fun day for two LOTR nerds! Stan was great tour guide and explained so much to us. The Weta workshop was amazing. Then Stan took us to filming sites. We liked it so much, we added another tour to our trip. The team was able to accommodate our request easily,
Weta Workshop was awesome and your guide was great taking us to scenes where movie was filmed. Great day
Great tour! Was just me, my hubby & our 8 month old. The driver was incredibly knowledgeable & accommodating for us. Great insights about Wellington & Weta Workshop in addition to LOTR. Would definitely recommend to anyone who has a family and can only do the 1/2 tour.
Leicester was an amazing tour guide he greeted us at the pick up spot and since we were the only ones on this tour it was personalized. Leicester was knowledgeable on all things lord of the rings and passionate about the origins of Wellington and the first Māori people that landed there. Brilliant tour and guide would recommend.
Very interesting and a lot of fun. The locations were gorgeous and the workshop was well done although slightly dull. .
Great tour for cruise ship passengers. Pickup in the port just past the ships tour buses. Easy walk. Our guide and driver Jozef was super. He provided so much great info on the port and city as well as LOTR lore. And the WETA workshop was stunning and included much more than LOTR. They’re involved in hundreds of movies, and cinematic elements.
I had a great time. Lester was enthusiastic and a wealth of info. He gave us some history of Wellington and did a fantastic job with quotes from LOTR! Weta Workshops was very interesting and creative. I am glad I chose this excursion!
The forest portion was very pretty. But if the tour guide didn't have the pictures, you couldn't tell that LOR was shot there. The tour guides were great! The Weta Workshop was very neat! We had a great time and much cheaper than the tour from our cruise ship.
Everything from the Guide that we had to the experiences that they took us to were really wonderful.
My husband and I are LOTR nerds and this excursion was great. Richard, our guide, did a wonderful job describing movie sites in the city and helping us to take photos recreating key moments in the film. Weta Workshop was interesting, but you don’t actually tour where people are creating props for upcoming movies. Everything was focused on past productions. Fortunately they focused on LOTR and The Hobbit which I appreciated.
We did a bit of useful general sightseeing of Wellington City on our way to the LOR rings sites included in this trip. The tour guide knew a lot about the filming of LOR and this made a huge difference to our experience. The second part of the trip was to WETA workshop, where the group was immersed in all the LOR trivia they could hope for! I even got a picture of me turned into a 4 ft hobbit complete with furry hobbit feet!
Richard was very knowledgeable and showed us many great sights of Wellington. He explained the forest shots and let us get into character. The Weta Workshop was amazing.
Our guide, Stan, took us to the site where some scenes in the Lord of the Rings were filmed. We trekked through the scenic area where he pointed out exact spots for various scenes, making for an interesting experience. Although we were impressed with the WETA workshop's accomplishments, our visit was somewhat of a disappointment, mainly because of our guide there. She was hard to understand and a bit irritating, so we didn't get as much out of the experience as we had hoped. The only other issue we encountered was waiting over half an hour for a couple from the ship to appear; turned out that they had cancelled the night before but Stan wasn't informed. Perhaps a time limit for customers should be set with the knowledge there won't be a long grace period.
This was an excellent tour with a great guide Richard - very knowledgeable and passionate. Small group size was also a benefit.
Our guide, Lester, led us on an extraordinary tour of LOTR. He was very creative in helping us to memorialize our experience. He took us to actual filming sites and showed us photos of specific scenes where the action was filmed. He was able to enrich our experience by sharing his knowledge of characters and history of logistical hurdles overcome. Lester’s enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge about the making of LOTR enhanced our experience so that we will remember it for many years to come. Not only would we heartily recommend Lester and LOTR experience to anyone else, but we would do it again if given the opportunity.
Great tour, we were visiting on a cruise ship. Easy meeting place where the ship docked. Richard our tour guide was excellent. Visiting the locations & recreating the scenes from the movies was great & Richard took photos of us which makes great memories. WETA tour was excellent the guide was excellent very informative & we learnt a lot. Highly recommend this tour for anybody especially if you love the movies.
This is tour is great; we were on a cruise & we really enjoyed it. Visiting the locations & recreating the scenes from the movies was great. Richard our guide was very informative & made the experience memorable. WETA studios were great our guide was excellent overall would highly recommend this tour. 5 stars.
Our Guide James was very knowledgeable about the LOTR filming productions as well as others. We visited some interesting sights where some of the first scenes were filled. Also the incredible WETA workshop. We highly recommend this tour to LOTR and Hobbit fans.
Extremely interesting. Weta was amazing. Also Gave a better concept of exhibits at the Te Papa Tongarewa Museum. Richard was most informative. Recommend this tour
Small group personalised and great for cruise ship passengers. Enjoyed the Banter with Tour guide Richard.
Wellington (admittedly it was one its few wind free days) is one of the most beautiful cities i have visited. It was enhanced by an excellent Lord of the Rings tour and friendly tour guides.
A really good tour. Our driver, Stan, was knowledgeable and a lot of fun. We learned a lot about the filming process and also the World Premiere of The Return of the King. The Weta Workshop was excellent. Bianca, our guide, was terrific. It was awesome to see all the great work Weta has done for different movies, not just The Lord of the Rings. Very enjoyable day.
Weta was amazing! It was the pick up and drop off that concerned us. Our driver waited too long for another group and got lost looking for hotel pickups. We arrived at Weta with only 1 minute to spare before our tour time. We were very rushed. He spent more time talking about American Politics than the amazing Weta and city of Wellington. For others interested, just taxi to Weta and buy your own tour tickets. Much better on your time.
The tour guide didn’t turn up at the stated time of 8.15am we waited u tul 8.40 - could t contact him and Viator support said they could t reach him either - SO WE DIDNT GET TO DO THE TOUR SO CABT LEAVE A COMMENT - will be looking to get a refund
Just ok. We spent our time waiting for late arrivals and the tour guide who was lost trying to find a hotel in the morning. We were very rushed and almost missed our Wētā Studio tour because of this. Van driver spent too much time talking about American politics.
Wayne did a great job on the tour pointing out details and trivia questions about LOTR! Kiki was our guide at the WETA workshop and was outstanding! She was easy to follow and understand! The mind blowing talent of the artists there have contributed to hundreds of movies!
Richard is the best tour guide. He took us to see beautiful sites. Plus extra Lord of the Ring sites. He was very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this tour. My daughter and I enjoyed this tour very much.
Me and my partner did the half day lord of the rings tour with the guide Lester. He was very nice and knew a lot about the movies. Hel told us interesting extra information about what happened when they recorded the movies which other lord of the rings tours that we have been to do do not. He also gave us some extra guiding about the maori people which was really interesting. Good time for everything and you have time to walk around in the weta cave and the shop
What a brilliant day. Lester was an absolutely excellent guide. I could not fault him - his knowledge of LOTR was good and it was so lovely to have his additional knowledge of his Maori hermitage. Definitely a recommendation from us!
The Weta Museum tour was interesting but most of the tour was run by TV video link to the owners, they are passionate and very talented- guide at museum was knowledgeable and informative. Our experience from the Viator guide was not great - spent a long time in a forest looking at trees with old tatty photos of film scenes. A forest walk which was not discussed and not suitable for persons with health concerns. We were rushed at the end to get back because the guide was only getting paid to a certain time - strongly encouraged to leave tour in the city so he didn’t have to drive back to ship terminal. Not worth the cost of this tour at all… sorry guys
Early session with Wayne on Mt Victoria film set locations. Then the Wētā Workshop seeing all detailed armour & weapons
Stan , our tour guide was very punctual , he was very informative , he told us all about the lord of the rings movie where how and why it was shot , my husband being a fan was really thrilled . He gave brief info about places to see in wellington as well . Highly recommended , worth the money spent .
Weta workshop was really great and our tour guide really made this experience fun and informtative. His name is not bob but sadly i forgot his name
