I would suggest that a person anticipating taking this tour do some research on their own concerning slavery in Virginia, especially Williamsburg. Lonnie was such a personable tour guide very very knowledgeable and engaging. We almost felt like we had been transported back to the 1800s. The things are ancestors endured all of the setbacks, but yet they prevailed and steel prevailing the phrase we shall overcome, actually takes on a new meaning meaning overcoming as a daily thing a continual thing.

Booked Lonnie for Mom, 101, and I, 68, to enjoy as a scooter adventure. It was fabulous. ... well-paced, provocative and intimate. Highly recommend! E. Y. Edmunds & A. Edmunds
The tour guide, Lonnie, is exceptional. He is Knowledgeable, entertaining , and interactive with the tourists. He answered questions and Gave the history of slavery in a narrative form. I highly recommend this tour.
We were impressed with the history lesson our guide gave us! He knew so much it made us feel like we were there as he spoke how slavery in Virginia evolved over time until it was brought to an end.
I decided on this tour based on other reviews, especially the one about learning additional information. Lonnie was simply amazing. Full of knowledge and willingness to share. Mentioned a variety of subjects related to slavery throughout history. Throughout the tour, he answered the one question I had prior to the tour; and, the many more we asked.
Our guide was very informative. Gave our group a lot to think about regarding slavery and Williamsburg.
Great experience! The guide provided us with both information and perspectives that were unknown to us beforehand. Helped us gain a broader understanding of colonial life in Williamsburg for everyone. Dove deep into historical governance and influences. Easy walk throughout the town with some fascinating stops. We recommend highly!
My partner and I are history teachers and were captivated by Lonnie’s knowledge and ability to respond to our questions. His wealth of knowledge made our 4 hour trip well worth the time!
What an amazing and eye opening tour. We had parents and kids aged 10-16 and everyone loved it. Tour gives history from a socio economic and political point of view with real life places and building to help tell the story. Great history lesson for us all!
This was an excellent tour. The guide was very informed and entertaining and provided a lot of information that was new to us. Highly recommend this tour and this guide.
Excellent tour! We appreciated the honest and factual sharing of the role of slavery in our past and its influence on our present.
Excellent presentation of root causes and effects of slavery in this country. Connects the dots of economic, social and environmental influences which produced the situation we have inherited today..
Lonnie is a great guide. He has an excellent knowledge of slavery and its history in the United States m.
Lonnie was a knowledgeable and friendly guide. We enjoyed every moment of our time learning about Williamsburg from a member of the community!
The tour was brief but very informative. We didn’t go far, but in Colonial Williamsburg one needn’t travel far to observe the history that took place.
It was a nice tour, with a short walk about town. We learned a lot we didn’t know! Tour guide was great.
Tour guy did a great job of explaining some of the history of slavery in colonial williamsburg.
This was a fantastic tour. Lonnie gave so many details about the history of slavery in the Williamsburg area. Although the tour was about an hour, we didn’t need to walk far and the walk was on pavement. Lonnie was great about answering all questions. I definitely recommend this tour, even for locals!
Great experience!! He was very knowledgeable and was able to connect the dots to our present day. I plan on returning for sure on our next trip.
Our experience was terrible. We had a hard time finding the tour party. Lonnie Sandifer, the tour operator makes no attempt to contact his tour customers to see if they're coming or not. We totally missed the tour and paid $50 for nothing!
Fabulous experience to help my 10 year old understand roots of slavery. Guide had knowledge of slavery beyond the Colonial period.
The truth will be told on this tour. There are plenty other tours and even self guided tours, but this guide shared info others may not have.
The tour gentlemen was so nice and kind to us all! 10 out of 10 I highly recommend!!The absolute best tour gentlemen from New Orleans!!!
My friend and I enjoyed this well-needed, enriched excursion in Williamsburg, VA. We left our tour more knowledgeable and aware about our taken away by ships ethnicity in USA and the question 'why'? was answered. Lonnie is awesome explaining this American history at its inception of slavery! This tour is highly recommended!
The guide was great, knowledgeable, helpful, interesting, personable. We really enjoyed this tour and this guide is great. He has been giving tours for years, able to give recommendations for places to go in the area. Would recommend booking a tour with this guide.
Very informative. Learned things I didn’t think I wanted to know. Guide was war and personable. It was a pretty hot day for an outdoor tour, but we stopped in plenty of shady spots along the was.
This tour was well worth my money and time. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about the institute of slavery and how the city of Williamsburg benefited from their unpaid labor. There isn't much mention of them in the written narratives within the history of Williamsburg.
Tour was very informative and Insightful and tour guide was very knowledgeable on the subject and explained very well
My wife and I very much enjoyed the tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable and explained things in an interesting but also entertaining way. He dealt with a lot of the background info of how slavery first started in the Jamestown area, how it expanded and the financial and political dealings that went on in the background.
We had a great time. The tour was awesome and the guide he was so sweet and knowledgeable. It was hot but I still enjoyed the tour.
Nice entry level experience to educate/incorporate how slavery played an essential role in the development of the America
Incredibly informative. Lonnie, the guide, was very knowledgeable, and great at establishing historical context. Highly recommend!
This is a wonderful, really detailed and thought-provoking tour. Lonnie is an excellent guide who truly knows his stuff and takes time to really paint a picture of what life would have been liked for enslaved people in Williamsburg. Well worth taking an hour of your time to go along and learn about these incredible people and their history.
Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly! He was amazing! Thanks for a great tour! Would highly recommend
Our guide was excellent. I anticipated he would share a little bit more information about the treatment of the slaves, but the things he did share with us were very informative.
This was an excellent tour, with a tremendous amount of useful and necessary information covered in a single hour. I attended with my 9-yo son who was engaged the entire time. Lonnie is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the history of Williamsburg generally and slavery in the colonies specifically. He was very engaging and patient with questions. Some of the material is not easy to hear, but all the more important for us to learn. I honestly feel like any trip to Williamsburg without this tour would be incomplete.
Lonnie was an incredible tour guide! He discussed important topics about slavery and systemic oppression in a thoughtful and professional manner. My 11-year-old peppered Lonnie with questions and he patiently answered every one! My entire family learned so much from Lonnie’s tour (and that’s saying a lot since I grew up near Williamsburg). I would absolutely book with Lonnie in the future and have already recommended the tout tour to several family members and friends.
Lonnie was a great tour guide. He provided insightful information, and it was obvious he had done some research on the history of Williamsburg. The most interesting facts were around the early emancipators and the risks they took in freeing their slaves in early America.
The slavery tour was very interesting. However, much of the slavery tour was covered in the Patriot’s tour. No need to do both. Either one. By itself is well worth the time and $$.
I cannot rate this tour. When we went to the address where our GPS led us to there was no address. We didn't know where to go from that point. Suggestion: Please put signs out to let tourists know where to meet and park. Thank u. We did reschedule.
Definitely worth your while, Lonnie did a very nice job with a sensitive topic. Lots of insight and interesting tidbits. Would definitely recommend it.
This walking tour is conducted by a well informed guide who was dedicated to tell the whole story about the enslavement of Africans and the practice that continue to this day. The pace allowed rest in the shade, water stops etc. Worth the price and the time .
So interesting - a small group so we could have a great conversation with Lonnie throughout the tour. Plenty of little known information and a different perspective. Thdnk you
Lonnie illuminated the history of slavery in the context of Williamsburg with deftness and sensitvity. Along with the Patriots tour, it provided a broader understanding of Colonial life and times.
Very informative! Lonnie was very knowledgeable and engaging. I remember coming to Williamsburg as a child. Slavery wasn’t talked about back then. Lonnie filled in the gap!
We missed the bus was on east side would love to visit again. To do the tour.again.the rest of the place was awesome Def. Coming back
Lonnie was a well informed guide. He provided insight into the cultural and moral aspects of the period much more than could be inferred from just observing the architecture of the era.
Lonnie is an excellent tour guide who had us reflecting on the implications of slavery and its lasting effects on society. I totally recommend this tour to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of this dark chapter in our history.
We enjoyed lonnie. He was knowledgeable He asked if we had questions. He was honest and interesting.
Great Tour I took the tour with my 2 grandsons, and while the temperature was unforgiving we totally absorbed with our guide (Lonnie). Lonnie was extremely detailed and answered all of our questions. As expected it was very informative 👍🏽. I would highly recommend it. Next year I will take it again.
