Itinerary
Your licensed guide will meet you at the elegant Williamsburg Inn, 136 E. Francis Street, and escort you back in time to the 18th-century. As we walk up Duke of Gloucester Street we will enter a different, slower-paced town. We will learn why the Colonists decided to break off from Great Britain. We will experience the sights, sounds, and scents of the 1700s, when Virginia was the largest and wealthiest colony in British America.
We will immerse ourselves in the 18th century as we walk up Duke of Gloucester Street, "the most historic street in America." We will stop to view the Capitol Building, where our Founding Fathers debated British taxation and finally proposed independence. Along the way we will pass by busy trades, merchant shops, and taverns. And maybe even visit the dark jail cells and shackles of the Public Gaol (Jail) where Blackbeard's pirates were imprisoned.
Walking down Duke of Gloucester Street, we will talk about Virginia's role in declaring our independence and chat about Colonial life here in the capital city. We will see costumed interpreters and observe the busy shops, working trades, and taverns for hungry travelers where our Fouding Fathers debated independence. We will stop by the Courthouse where we'll share the punishments doled out to convicted criminals and perhaps take a photo with your feet in the "stocks."
On our way to the magnificent Governor's Palace, we'll pass by horse-drawn carriages, perhaps encounter a patriot, and walk up Palace Green to see the mansion that showcased the wealth and power of the British empire.
We will conclude our tour at the historic Bruton Parish Church, near Merchants Square. This gives you the option to continue touring the historic area or to visit Merchants Square with its 40 shops and restaurants. Shops include Lululemon, Talbot's, and Scotland House, and award-winning restaurants, from fine dining to casual spots. You may want to continue touring or grab a bite, or go souvenir shopping. Your guide will let you know their favorite spots!

So informative, a great way to get to know Williamsburg with lovely stories to go with it. We had three elementary children with us and she was wonderful to include them in all the fun. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to explore Williamsburg in a less overwhelming way!
We had a wonderful experience with Cyndi! One of the best tours we’ve ever taken! She was so knowledgeable yet warm as well as entertaining. She is definitely a one of a kind true storyteller!!!❤️
Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about williamsburg. She made the tour lots of fun.
We hired Cyndi for a 2.5 hour tour of Colonial Williamsburg. We wanted not only to learn about the site, but also get some context for its 300+ year history. She was great! She was very knowledgeable and even had some with helpful maps. None of our questions stumped her. She was very genuine and her enthusiasm was infectious. Before the tour she sent a helpful list of restaurants and afterwards, a recommended reading list (as we discussed what I had been reading, pre-tour). I’ve hired lots of private guides in many cities in my travels. Cyndi is among the very best.
Cyndi was amazing! She was not only accommodating, but a wealth of knowledge! She answered all of our questions, gave us insider tips to the area, and shared an abundance of resources to continue our learning after we left! We truly appreciate her time and expertise.
This is an informative private tour from Cyndi who is a wealth of knowledge, a great listener as well as communicator and a great personality.
We thoroughly enjoyed our private tour with Cyndi Young. With it being just the two of us, Cyndi fully customized our tour, accommodating our needs and providing MUCH MORE than a scripted series of points of interest. Cyndi is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the history of Williamsburg and the American Revolution, as well as the amenities and services available to guests. She has a kind and engaging manner.
This was a great tour with our guide, Cyndi! She was informative and such a wealth of knowledge of all things Colonial Williamsburg and beyond. She paid close attention to our comfortability today, as it was hot and muggy, so she made sure to stop in shady parts to talk history with us (my husband and I). She gave us plenty of recommendations for food prior to our tour and recommendations for books to read after our tour, and the afternoon was just so pleasant. She is friendly, warm, and knowledgeable. Book with her now; you won’t be disappointed!
Cyndi of Friendly Williamsburg Tours contacted us prior to and after the tour. She was very helpful and answered a lot of questions. I was anxious about how everything would work. Cyndi is very experienced with visiting Williamsburg, so she was able to reassure me. My husband and I enjoyed having a private tour--this was our first time! Cyndi is very knowledgeable about Williamsburg and its history. She is very friendly and polite. She modified the tour for us as our ability to walk very far on a 95 degree day was limited. She timed it perfectly so we got to see and hear the musicians marching down the street in their historic costumes. Folks, you'll really enjoy a private tour with Cyndi!
Cyndi Young was awesome!! Extremely informative. The tour does require walking, however Cyndi was very accommodating when we needed to sit and rest. Most personal experience… we got to meet George Washington and discussed his upcoming trip to the southern states.
Cyndi was incredibly knowledgeable about details, dates, relationships and events in the history of America’s beginnings! She is also very personal and thoughtful and quite concerned out our comfort. Cyndi felt like a comfortable friend with a vast store of information.
From the first few minutes, introducing us to the main characters of Williamsburg, to the very end of our walk, Cyndi shared the rich and important History of this area. She helped tie up some loose ends for us as we asked questions, even how the Queen City, in NC, ties into this story. Cyndi definitely knows and enjoys this Beautiful area. We had a great time; stopped to take pictures along the way, saw a few of the main reenactors (G.W. being one), and learned a lot about this Historical town, from Cyndi. We think you will also!
Cyndi was exactly the right person for our tour. She filled in the bits on US history we were missing - not having grown up here - and gave us great jumping off points to go on with. Got loads of local information too. My ten year old was completely engaged for the entire tour as was I! I absolutely recommend this tour and guide!!!
I met up with Cyndi Young who was gracious, passionate, extremely knowledgeable and knew where the sheep were hiding that day! She paced things so well, kept the story alive. We stopped for a treat, pictures whenever I wanted. Warm, engaging and easy to spend time with. We went “ over “ scheduled time. I never felt rushed. Highly recommended!!!!
Fantastic time with Cindi Young. Her knowledge and enthusiasm made our experience very special and personal.
I’m taking a road trip with my 82 year old mom and we had Cyndi as our personal tour guide. She took us at a pace that was perfect for us. Shared so much history beyond what you saw with extra historical photos and items. Even offered to take our picture for our memories. We would highly recommend booking her as your personal tour guide!!!
Cindi was our guide, wow she is very knowledgeable, she really knows her history & best of all she didn’t rush the tour we went on a nice and leisurely pace
We loved everything!! Cyndi was extremely knowledgeable about Williamsburg and Colonial America. She was a pleasure to spend a beautiful afternoon in Williamsburg. She was very accommodating to our schedule. (I made a mistake with the booking and she was able to fix my mistake). She was very accommodating with the needs of my older parents. I cannot recommend Cyndi more to experience Williamsburg and other historical locations across Virginia.
My son and I had a great experience! Cyndi is a wonderful guide. Not only did she give a great tour but she was able to answer all of our off topic questions related to just about anything and everything “Williamsburg.” The tour was about 2 hours which started at the Williamsburg Inn and finished up at Bruton Parish Church.
Cyndi made great suggestions and had great history knowledge. Her enthusiasm for the history was contagious.
Cyndi is very pleasant and accommodating. A wealth of interesting information. She was in a scooter post surgery but it didn’t slow her down one bit.
Great overview of colonial williamsburg. Very Knowledgeable guide. Good pace with stops to sit and to get water and snacks
Great communication and followup on all activities. Cyndi was a terrific guide for our walking tour.
We had a wonderful tour of Colonial Williamsburg with Cyndi. She took great care of our 97 year old mom. She showed us lovely gardens and named all the horses as she walked us up Duke of Gloucester Street while she explained Revolutionary War history AND the history of how Colonial Williamsburg came to be. She also gave us a list of dinner suggestions and pointed out drinks and snacks that were peculiar to Williamsburg. Altogether, a great afternoon!
Visited ares not usually traveled. Very knowledgeable about the area. Cyndi spoke softly, which in a crowded area made it difficult to hear some times. Great overview setting you up for more discovery on your own!
Cyndi was a great guide. We found the tour to be very informative, engaging and insightful. Great tour.
We gained not only wealth of historical knowledge, but also interesting local knowledge and recommendations.
Wonderful way to see Historic Williamsburg!! Cyndi was so knowledgeable and fun! I will super recommend this tour!!
Cyndi was a wonderful, knowledgeable guide. So informative and accurate. My husband is a History buff so asked lots of questions which Cyndi confirmed & explained. We loved it! She stopped to talk to the various costumed people portraying famous people of the era. Made the tour even more interesting.
Cindy was a wonderful tour guide. She showed us all around Williamsburg and her knowledge of the area and the history made it very interesting!! Don't miss her tour when in Williamsburg!
This was an A+ travel experience. Our guide Cindy was thirough, knowledgeable, and genuinely nice. Her knowledge went above and beyond and we felt like we were in the company of a friend. I truly appreciated the many photos she graciously took of my family and her kindness towards us.
Our private tour with Cyndi was wonderful and informative. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Williamsburg. She catered parts of the tour to things we were interested in seeing. One being the Masonic Lodge for my husband. I highly recommend her.
Cyndi of Friendly Williamsburg Tours is as her company name suggests extremely Friendly. She is also very knowledgeable and passionate of the history surrounding Colonial Williamsburg.
Cyndi was a superb guide for my wife and daughter relatively novice to US revolutionary history She provided a great overview as well as interesting details of key personalities. She answered all questions and demonstrated an impressive knowledge of the period. A must do for your first visit Thanks Cyndi for making an unforgettable day even with 98 degree temperature! Darwin
Cyndi made our tour special taking her time to show us many historical points of interests and answering our many questions. We felt like we were with a friend during the tour.
We bumped into Cyndi in a Williamsburg car park early one morning and asked her for help with the local parking app. Well, we got so much more than we bargained for! After helping us sort the car park out—caused by our UK mobile phones, LOL—Cyndi explained she was the best home-grown walking tour guide in all of Williamsburg. So we were delighted to put her to the test on 4th July 2025, the town's most significant celebration all year. We were not disappointed. It was like walking the cobbles with an old friend we had known for years, who also just happens to know every tiny detail of history linked to Williamsburg from 1607 to the present day, not forgetting the heated period from 1775 to 1782. We had a blast and only parted company due to a meal booking we had previously planned. If you need a fine lady in the know, then Cyndi is Ya girl!
Cyndi was great! Very informative and friendly and punctual. It was nice to have a private tour. We all enjoyed the tour.
Cyndi hosted a private walking tour for my daughter and I- we were in town to visit William and Mary for a college tour. My daughter had been to Williamsburg before I had not. We didn’t have a ton of time in town. Rather than purchasing tickets, we purchased this tour with Cyndi. What a great choice! Cyndi was extremely knowledgeable and it had pictures and other artifacts, such as spun wool, to argument our experience. Cyndi knew various people around town and invited them to participate in our tour. For example, the bellman at the Williamsburg Inn shared some really great stories about when Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2007. Cyndi was able to answer all of my curious kid’s questions. This tour does not go into buildings so a Ticket to Colonial Williamsburg is not needed. I would recommend this tour as a preview for a one day Williamsburg visit or as a way to efficiently get an overview of Williamsburg if you are short on time.
The pace was lovely and would highly recommend Cyndi. Her knowledge of history and the tidbits she provides made the tour so enjoyable. Get the sweet potato muffins!
Had a wonderful tour of Colonial Williamsburg with our tour guide Cyndi! Well organized, interesting and informative. Texted ahead of tour with introduction, directions and great recommendations on dining and shopping options nearby! Would highly recommend! Greg L. St Louis
Cyndi was great and brought Williamsburg to life! I was with my son (18) and daughter (11) and she connected with both in an easy way. The tour was informative and fun! I recommend it to everyone.
Excellent tour! Highly recommend Cynthia. Out guide showed us all over town at a great walking pace. She was very patient with us.
Our tour was for just the 2 of us. Cyndi was very knowledgeable. It truly felt like we were time traveling. She told us some great stories and we learned a lot about the time period.
Cyndi is a wonderful tour guide! She tailored the tour to meet the needs and interests of our family. Highly recommend! She really knows her history!
Excellent private tour - Grandma and Grandpa with daughter and her two daughters, our granddaughters, 14 and 10. Very personable, knowledgeable and informative- 2 1/2 hrs. Highly recommended ! Ron and Judy and Danielle
It was an informative private tour that lasted 3 hours with Cyndi Young. Cyndi was very engaging and enthusiastic. Made the day special.
Great overview of colonial Williamsburg. Cyndi was so knowledgeable about Williamsburg political and social history and important colonial figures. I learned a lot about Williamsburg - past and present! Enjoyed the tour.
We had a great time with Cyndi and learned a lot about Williamsburg architecture, customs, history, flora, fauna, and the shops. I highly recommend Cyndi and her private tour.
Cindy was very knowledgeable and of course friendly. She not only knew a lot of interesting facts, but also seemed to know all of the volunteers and other tour guides. This came in handy as she was able to suggest many places to check out after the tour.
