My husband and I stayed there this weekend. It was lovely! Rooms are spacious and clean. The beds are comfy. The indoor pool was clean and well maintained. They took great care of my husband's gluten allergy at brunch. Everyone working there was so kind and went above and beyond to make our trip wonderful.

We stayed here 2 nights while attending a wedding. The rooms and the food are wonderful. We loved being able to park the car on Friday and not touch it until we left on Sunday. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The walking trails and local history are an extra bonus.
This place had so much potential! There are so many things that missed the mark. First: there is a lack of communication. We wanted to stay an extra night, but got told no. Then we asked someone else cause every one was checking out and they said we could definitely stay an extra night. Second: if you want your room cleaned you have to ask and no one told us so we had to go to the pool to get towels. Third: the food is ok. We wanted to eat dinner in the main house, but it’s not a full menu. There were only three dinner options and nothing seemed appetizing. The whole place is beautiful I did a spa day and it was nice. Lilian and Taylor were very helpful, but they seemed like they were over worked. I think Gordon Ramsey needs to show up and help this place out.
The place is amazing, featuring a historic building with beautiful scenery. It's a perfect blend of rich history and stunning landscapes that captivates every visitor. The food is Amazing and the regional dishes often reflect the local culture and traditions, showcasing unique flavors and ingredients specific to southern VA. Do not miss the Tavern the drinks are a most specially if prepared by the wonderful bartender!
My partner and I booked a stay here this past weekend to celebrate my birthday and Valentine’s Day. I’ll start with the positives. We discovered this property last year after visiting a nearby distillery and I booked our birthday stay well in advance. The grounds are absolutely beautiful — a tree-lined driveway straight that looks straight out of a magazine, scenic hiking trails with old ruins, and true quiet. We walked for miles without seeing anyone. It was peaceful and perfect for unplugging. The spa, heated pool, and saunas were a big draw, and the rooms have a lovely historic charm. The staff was friendly upon arrival, and Amy in the spa was wonderful. Unfortunately, there were some major disappointments. On our first evening, the pool and sauna area clearly hadn’t been maintained. Wet towels and trash scattered around the pool, water throughout the locker rooms, and broken chairs in the corner. It felt very neglected by staff. We were there for an hour and not a single staff member came in to clean up. The biggest issue, however, was the Valentine’s Day pre-fix dinner, which we had reserved weeks in advance through the catering manager herself, Taylor. We arrived for our 7:30 reservation and weren’t seated until 8:15. The restaurant appeared overwhelmed, with guests waiting and leaving to get drinks at Darby's to pass the time, clearly frustrated. We were seated in a separate back room with no music, which felt awkward. Service was EXTREMELY slow. It took over 30 minutes just to receive drinks, and we had to ask multiple times for water. The appetizer meant to be shared came with uneven portions (3 piece of beef crostini for two people??) Our salads arrived an hour later and looked more like a neglected plate of garnish than an actual part of the meal. Our entrées didn’t arrive until 10:15 PM — nearly THREE HOURS after our reservation time. While the steaks were well cooked and flavorful, the experience leading up to them overshadowed the meal. Our waitress just seemed to ignore us because she knew how upset we were. No manager addressed the delays, apologized, or offered any accommodation. We later learned that some local regulars walked-in and expected accommodations. The staff allowed it to happen so they were seated despite the reservation-only structure. This overwhelmed the small kitchen and delayed service for those of us who had planned ahead. That was disappointing and disrespectful, especially on one of the busiest nights of the year. Poor and greedy choice on behalf of management. We understand that challenges happen, but better communication and accountability would have gone a long way. We would have expected that the staff would have been trying to make amends, apologize, offer free drinks, discounted service, ANYTHING to make the time go by faster. They tried to pretend nothing was happening. At that point nothing in town locally was even open to attend as a backup dinner option so we were forced to wait or go to bed hungry. This was meant to be a special birthday retreat, and unfortunately the dinner experience significantly overshadowed the entire weekend. This resort is a wedding destination. For a staff meant to regularly handle large volume dinner parties, that experience had yet to be proven this weekend. They fumbled this event majorly and took 0 accountability. Very disappointing.
