Itinerary
At LAVA Centre is a high-tech, interactive volcano and earthquake exhibition. It is the most awarded exhibition in Iceland. It tells the story of Iceland and explains why it is so active. It goes into details on the different volcanoes and types of volcanoes. A replica of the hot spot under Iceland (Magma plume) and a earthquake simulator will make your hair to rise. A movie about all the most recent eruption and a beautiful observation deck round up an experience not to be missed. LAVA Centre is right at the main road going east from Reykjavík and is the gateway to the South Coast and the Katla Geoopark.

Amazing experience very informative and fascinating presentation!
We didn’t expect it to be this much fun! We spent a lot of time especially on the interactive parts of the exhibition. The lighting and sound create a really cool atmosphere that makes you actually feel the power of the Earth. We learned a lot about volcanoes in a fun and engaging way, so it’s definitely worth a visit!
Very well done and interesting! Loved it!
Don’t skip this. The exhibit was well thought out and while simple in design it is very interactive and educational
Excellent and very educational exhibition - the creation of Iceland and it’s volcan activities is made easy to understand. The interviews with the people of Grindavik was very touching
Amazing day really fun and recommend it
What a fun place. ! I loved the informative and interactive displays and the movie was spectacular
If somebody asks me about lava and geology i would point them straight to lava centre and their museum and movie. Not only is it intresting but its interactive and fun.
Best lava intersctive museum ever and im talking around the world
Wonderful. Must do to appreciate the lava fields.
I visited Lava as part of an organised tour. I was very impressed by the amount of different exhibits and the way it explained the various types and timelines involved in the whole process. It is well laid out and has enough people who could explain and answer questions.
The centre had good signage and was easy to navigate . Information as clear and facilities were clean looking. The movie was just a collection of volcano clips with loud music, which was a bit disappointing
Pretty sure I learned more about lava and volcanoes here in a few hours than in the rest of my life combined. If you like learning, and you'd like to know more about what formed and continues to shape Iceland, this is it. This is a first-rate museum.
The facility is lovely and the information presented in interactive and hi tech methods. We learned so much about the impact of earthquakes and volcanos on Icelanders.
Not sure if the other reviews went to completely different exhibition.....this is by far the worst exhibit I have been to. There's a movie which shows previous volcanic eruptions in iceland...no words, no explanation. There's the exhibition section to the museum which is disappointing , just not enough information and the information presented is very poorly explained. We did go to the observation deck but it was cloudy so we didn't see anything. Thankfully there's an overpriced cafeteria & giftshop....The admission fees are high, we were very very disappointed with visit
This is an amazingly well designed museum showing and detailing about the earthquake and volcanic activity in Iceland, both historically and current. It is very interactive, so great for kids and adults alike. We also had lunch at the adjoining cafe which was also very good. Would highly recommend.
Just a beautiful made museum no downsides at all in my opinion this is a must have on your Iceland trip. Give this museum a go you won't get disappointed.
Stunningly amazing interactive exhibits that connect the whole family. From ages 8 to 45. Movie was good and very cool bean bag seats to watch from.
This is an informative museum/experience that's worth considering when the weather turns bad. It is, however, quite expensive. The shop and cafe inside both look good if you're interested in that too.
Excellent interactive exhibition of volcanoes and tectonic activity. Kids loved this. Right on the highway that you’ll pass anyway, if exploring southern Iceland. Well worth the stop and a decent cafe as well.
This center demonstrates what it is like to live and work in the shadow of volcanoes. It also emulates lava flows and earthquake movements. This is well worth the expensive entrance fee. You will leave for a new appreciation of the volcanic experience in Iceland.
Wonderful exhibition! Definately worth a visit, especially on a rainy day, which are so many in Iceland. Basic and understandable. Discount for geography teachers as well ;)
very interesting exhibition! the fact that it was interactive made the learning experience much more interesting. different types of sensory inducing activities definitely completed the experience. hearing what magma sounds like, feeling a 6,3 earthquake and the balcony to look for the volcano’s you just learned about. a very nice ending to the visit was the restaurant, staff was super nice and accommodating and the food was great! i would’ve loved to learn a little more about the recent eruptions, other than that definitely a 10/10 experience.
We visited lava center with family and were greeted by a really nice lady. She gave us a tour around the whole museum, explaining every detail. My favourite part was the exhibition. It was a jaw-dropping experience. It felt like you were there during eruptions. I wholeheartedly recommend it. Bring your friends and family and come!
Barbara, our guide, made this an exceptional tour! She explained everything with clarity and enthusiasm. I definitely recommend the Lava Center when visiting Iceland.
Absolutely Unique, Bang for time and money, both for adults and kids, very well presented by host....
All you need to know about the creation of Iceland and the various eruptions over time. It is a great exhibition and one can enjoy the interactivity. Good coffee shop too.
Great experience! Definitely worth a stop! Really thought through exhibition teaching about the history of Iceland and volcanic activities in a very easy and interactive way🙏
Very informative center. Interactive displays, volcano timelines, a short movie with stunning photography, and many displays. Current activity shows on a large map. It's definitely worth the entrance fee. You go at your own pace. Probably not of interest to very young children. We spent a bit over an hour there.
This is an amazing interactive experience for all ages. It is worth the amount of admission. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable. Great place for a group.
This small museum provides a great way to learn about volcanoes and volcanic activity in Iceland. Not sure I would make a specific trip out to see it but if it's along the way to something else, it's worth the stop.
We enjoyed the various exhibitions, and the warm welcome on arrival was much appreciated. However, compared to other similar venues (eg Perlan in Rejkavik) it was very expensive. If you have been to Perlan, or plan to go there, this one is probably not worth it.
Interactive exhibition was amazing! Barbara and Mattina were very friendly and knowledgeable. Couldn't recommend enough :)
Our visit to the Lava center was incredible. Our guide, Martina was lovely, very knowledgeable and passionate about her work. 10/10 recommend ✨This place is a must see.
The guide was lovely, super energic, very passionate about her work, very knowledgeable! ❤️ Such a ray of sunshine, will recommend ❤️ Thank you Martina! 🫶🏻
A good stop off on the south coast tour. An interactive and interesting museum which made for a good stop on the south coast tour to Vik from Reykjavik. In the rain, it was a particularly pleasant top. The museum was really engaging - interactive and educational. Enjoyed by the two teenage boys with us and essential learning to understand the amazing Iceland surroundings. Nice facilities in the museum including toilets, a small cafe etc.
Excellent museum, very informative and powerful. Worth a stop. We spent just under an hour to watch the film and go through the different rooms. Exhibits were very well done and we learned a lot about the geology and evolution of the island.
Very interesting self-guided tour. Front desk staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Displays made it fun and we learned a lot
It was interesting. I don’t think you need to buy advanced tickets. I think we were there for about an hour. We stopped on our way back to Reykjavik. They have a gift shop and bathrooms.
Unless you are on a tour or a bit lacking in things to do, it isn’t worth the drive to stop here. If you are on a tour and stop here, you’ll learn a bit about volcanoes including, in particular, those in Iceland. It’s a bit interesting though seeing volcanoes on video isn’t nearly as good as seeing actual steam vents, hot pots, geysers, etc. There’s some technical information but, overall, it wasn’t very interesting.
I was fortunate to visit during a quiet time. The centre had interactive activities and fascinating information about volcanoes and earthquakes in Iceland. The film was very interesting and showed the explosive nature of volcanoes. Cafe and gift shop on site. Looking at the surrounding volcanoes from the viewing platform really made you think about how restless the land in Iceland is.
We did a Lava Show in Vik a day prior to coming here so I didn't know what to expect and was for a moment concern that we may be repeating a similar experience - though it was a completely different one here - where Lava Show focused on the "lava melting experiment" this Lava Centre focuses on the natural phenomenon as it occurs all over the world, and of course Iceland in particular due to its uniqueness. As people said here, really cool interactive exhibitions - some work better than the others but still cool, and they are of a pretty big scale - my favorite was the sound of the earthquake, felt like I am watching the move Interstellar :) The tickets sale as a bit weird - there are 2 choices, 1 basic for just the moment and then 2 more expensive package for the access to the interactive area - funny enough you don't get any tickets, nor a bracelet or anything, nor does anyone check it when you enter the exhibitions area... basically felt like an honor system so do the right thing!
The lava centre offers two options. A 20 min film and and exhibit. Both helped us understand Icelandic volcanos better. The exhibit is an interactive walk thru. Go early while it is still quiet because once it’s busy having to wait in line to see each part would be frustrating.
My favorite exhibit was the time-traveling globe that shows you how the hot spot moved over billions of years until it became the Iceland of today. The movie was also fun. We laid on the bags in the front - perfect if you have a toddler with you!
We ended up wishing that this had been our first stop in Iceland, agreeing with others that it provides great geological context for all the amazing sights you'll see during your visit. A thorough and well-presented overview of the forces churning under this fascinating land. The staff were super helpful in answering any questions we had.
Nice little stop. The exhibits are well done and all ages can appreciate this. We went on a rainy overcast day and still found it very interesting to visit.
The rooftop observatory was a FANTASTIC wrap-up of the overall exhibit to get a clear understanding of the nature of the volcanic activity on Iceland!
Stopped in here on our trip to Iceland. Very informative. Loved the video. Some interactive exhibits. Don’t know that it’s a “must” when in Iceland but it was informative.
Quick stop but informative and fun. Enjoyed learning about the earthquake activity and seeing the recent tracking of it. Not huge, but they do also have a nice gift shop.
