great trip, yet time should be manged more carefully. we started 10 AM and got back on 2030. maybe one hour earlier to leave and less one hour for hiking. Also more explanations regarding geology would be appreciated.

* Felt misled that this was a small group experience - 14 travelers jammed in the vehicle. I had to sit in the back of the vehicle in the middle of three people. I did not have a window to see the scenery on the long drive, nor did my seat have a seat belt. * The trip leader, Robert, did not offer any natural or cultural history educational information on the tour. I really wanted to learn about Iceland's geology, geography, and culture. * The leader could not accompany the group on the hike due to a sore leg. He gave rather vague information on the trail and no trail map. * Lunch is not provided nor was a box lunch offered in the pre-departure materials. We were unaware sandwiches and other lunch items were available at the meeting point (Hella) & that there is a small cafe. * There are too many visitors at Landmannalaugar. We could not hike at our own pace because there was a group of 25 ahead and behind us. The parking lot was full for large and small buses. * The number of visitors clearly exceeds the destination's carry capacity. * The roundtrip road transfer time to the tour and back to our hotel was 3 1/2 hours * Overall, our experience was poor given the price US$623 pp, including transfer from Reykjavik hotel. * Several members of the group including one family told me they are requesting refund because they felt misled given that they paid over US$2,000 for the tour. My observations are based on 40-years in the travel industry, serving as Geographic Expedition's President and WWF's VP for Travel in partnership with Natural Habitat Adventures
Tour guide was excellent with explaining the history of the region. When we arrived to Landmannalauger there was something for everyone to enjoy. My daughter is 10 and preferred the geothermal pool, my husband wanted a long hike and I was hoping for a short hike. We all got what we wanted. Also the pictures I saw of Landmannalauger were accurate. It really did look that spectacular. A bit pricey but worth it in the end.
Not a good experience for the premium price we paid!! The company was more expensive compared to others. By the time we boarded, the only seats left for us had a broken/blocked window, which significantly limited our ability to enjoy the scenic drive, while the other passengers had unobstructed views. Importantly our concern was not addressed! Since a large part of the tour is the scenic drive itself, it was disappointing to pay the same price but have a limited view.
This is just a transportation service. There were many opportunities to share even basic interpretation of geology, etc that would have enriched the tour. Vehicle was very comfortable though.
We went with the guide Adam for a super jeep trip, it was amazing, the views are wonderful. Adam is very knowledgeable, patient in answering all the questions, and has a sense of humor. In fact, he went out of his way, made an effort to make us have a good time, explained the route, the surroundings, and also told all kinds of interesting stories about Iceland. It is highly recommended to tour with Adam.
What an experience! Fun ride in a super jeep, amazing guide and landscapes and colours one would not expect. The hike up Bláhnúkur was stunning, with fantastic views of this beautiful part of Iceland. I am looking forward to return to Landmannalaugar when I return to Iceland. Thank you Stefan for a fantastic day!
We were lucky enough to go on the super jeep tour of the Thorsmork area of Iceland. The trip was incredible in the huge Ford and our guide was passionate and knowledgable about the landscape. We hiked and saw some beautiful sites and came home with memories we will treasure forever.
We booked an all day Super Jeep tour with this company as a last minute change of plan the day before our trip. We didn’t expect it to be the best day we had in Iceland! The vehicles we rode in gave us 100% confidence in their safety, capabilities, and comfort! The trip to the highlands was absolutely stunning! The tour guide we had, Magnus, was very friendly and very entertaining! He was enthusiastic about the day of adventure we had planned. He taught us fun Icelandic games as we drove to the highlands, stopped at every request to take pictures, and was extremely knowledgeable about the terrain. He showed us amazing views, waterfalls, and scenery we didn’t even know was there! I couldn’t recommend a company more for your Icelandic adventure! I can’t wait to come back to do it again!
We did this tour the last week of May, and there is clearly a reason other tour companies don’t offer this until mid-June. We spent the whole time in the Jeep with about an hour at Landmannalaugar, where every trail was closed. It was treacherous driving conditions. In fact, our driver (who was very skilled and thankfully got us there and back safely) shared that he had gotten stuck for 6+ hours 2 days before and had to wait for help. Maybe it’s great in peak summer, but I’d save your time and your money. It was out only bad day of 12 days in Iceland - way more to see and do elsewhere.
We were glad we did this, as it offered us many other stops along the way that one wouldn’t have time to do if they were driving themselves. One other review here mentioned that normal passenger vehicles were at the final destination, which had me second guessing our choice to use this company and tour. While true, I would not want to drive the F-roads up there. Taking this tour had us flying through the roads 2x or 3x the speed that other people were taking their rental cars at, and the ride was pretty smooth, with many stops and branches/paths taken that most people don’t go to. Once at the top destination we could hike or go into the thermal water. What I didn’t know until I saw people doing it was you aren’t just limited to the area by the water entrance. You could walk, wade, swim along the water upstream towards the sources. All in all, I would do it again and recommend it over taking the risk and driving it yourself.
I took the Landmannalaugar tour today. The driver/guide was Awesome. It was peaceful not to drive on gravel roads and see all cool places. I will highly recommend this tour and this company!
Fantastic trip to Landmannalaugar in the first of the winter snow. Margaret was our guide and was friendly, knowledgeable and good fun. The views were incredible and we enjoyed a good hike around a lava field. I'd recommend this trip, and Margaret as a guide, very highly.
The Southcoast Adventures Landmannalaugar Tour is SO worth the price! My 23-year-old daughter and I spent a truly amazing day on this fabulous 10-hour tour. We took the tour on August 27, which is close to the end of the main tourist season in Iceland, so we were lucky to be the only two guests on the tour that day. (I was so impressed that Southcoast Adventures had not canceled the tour on us. Top marks to them for valuing their customers!) We were also blessed with perfect weather and the best guide ever, Alberto, who was highly experienced, super friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the area we visited with him (he also gave us great advice about other interesting sites to visit along the south coast and Vestmannaeyjar). Alberto stopped at all the best lookouts both on the way to Landmannalaugar and during our hike through it. For example, on the way there, he stopped so we could hike up to a vantage point where we could see for miles. It was such a clear day, we could see three of Iceland's major glaciers at the same time in the distance! Perhaps most important to me as a mother, Alberto was very safety conscious throughout the day. He was an excellent driver, and he always set up the steps and helped us in and out of the massive converted Mercedes van (the wheels are well over three feet tall, so the door is located about 30 inches off the ground!). He also provided hiking poles and modeled where best to plant our feet as we hiked up and down the lava bed in Landmannalaugar. But perhaps best of all, Alberto never rushed us as we stopped to take a zillion photos of this beautiful, magical place! Thank you, Southcoast Adventures, and especially to Alberto, for giving us a truly memorable day in Landmannalaugar! (Note: We had the option of soaking in the geothermal pool located near the base camp at Landmannalaugar, but we opted to concentrate on hiking instead to see as much as we could visit in a day.)
We had an amazing experience on this tour. Our driver (Elias) was knowledgeable and had the perfect balance of sharing information but also giving us time to reflect and enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Iceland. Highly recommend this company, tour, and driver!
We wish there was a 6th star for South Coast Adventures. They were so helpful for our family of 4 in supporting us on the trip of a lifetime in Iceland. The office was so helpful (thank you Sitka!) in answering all our questions and helping us customize an experience that was perfect for our family. We arranged for private transfer from Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar by super Jeep to begin our 4 day trek on the Laugevegur trail. They helped us port luggage from hut to hut each day which allowed us to carry less weight on the trail and bring more comforts with us on the trip. All of the South Coast staff was friendly, patient and helpful. We had no problems and this is a logistically challenging thing to do. Our driver, Virgo, was AWESOME! Our kids loved him and he had so much information about this amazing land to offer. He made sure we were comfortable and made stops to make sure we saw the best sights on our way to and from the inland mountains. We requested him for our return since we loved him so much. All the cars we rode in were amazing. The first super Jeep was HUGE! We were picked up right in front of our hotel which was quite the spectacle. On the return we had a brand new Jeep and then transferred to a brand new Tesla for the city portion of our return. The jeeps drive THROUGH rivers. It really is an amazing experience to have a private guide for this. If you do, and you get Viggo, you are sure to have the trip of a lifetime as well!
Landmannalaugar, the highlands and all the landscapes we saw are totally worth seeing but… you absolutely don’t need a « super jeep » tour to do so in summertime. Out of the 5 things advertised, we did 3 and didn’t do the crater and « driving up the volcano » stuffs that we especially wanted to do. All the tracks we took were also driven by big buses and Dacia Dusters. We were expecting to go on more crazy tracks, tracks than only a « super jeep » can go on and not also Dusters and 4x4 campervans, we were expecting more of a bumpy ride. From 9:30 to 12:30 it’s only drive, only one 1min stop. Then 3h30 in Landmannalaugar (which is at the end less time on site than when you come by bus). You’re leaving at 16h, on the way out, we stopped to 3 points of interest but it’s just 5min stops so you don’t get the time to explore… Quite disappointed to pay that amount of money (around 280€ each) to do stuffs we could have done by bus or by renting a small 4x4. Out of our 1 month in Iceland this was our BIG activity and we should have put our money elsewhere. At this price they don’t even offer any snacks or drink during the 10h trip.
Amazing guide in Ingvar. Prepared us well for the 10 hour round trip journey. Entertaining and knowledgeable along the way. Even shared his fish jerky! Drove through wide open snow fields with beautiful views culminating in a swim in the geothermal pools at Landmannalauger. Not another soul around.
The views were spectacular. The jeep was super cool and pretty comfortable. The hike was gorgeous and had several different cool features for a relatively short and accessible hike. Fascinating colorful rock, geothermal area, lava field, and mountains. Ingvar took care of us well, drove great, was very knowledgeable, and knew all the best spots to show us. Staff dealt with our scheduling mishap very kindly!
Superb organization, reasonable price, very well equipped Super Jeep and the best tour guide you can imagine. We are very happy to have booked this tour.
Thanks to Southcoast Adventure I was able to visit Landmannalaugar during the first snow this season. They are very professional and help you along any way they can. I’m looking forward to my next Iceland visit and the next adventure with them. Thank you and Aloha!
The 10th of july 2020, we went to visit Landmannalauger with Hilmar Finnson. We enjoyed a lot, it was amazing and Hilmar was a fantastic guide, explaining everything we wanted to know, answering all our questions and keeping silence when he knows silence is a good way to appreciate what you are sorrounded by. We noticed he knows very well Icelnad, not only the paths but the cultural, scientis and enviromental points as well. This is one of the excursion we are always going to remember. We visited places that made us feel part of the movie Lord of the Rings or Narnia. Places where we wouldn't have gone on our own.
We took the full day tour of Landmannalauger, Hekla volcano and Ljotipollur crater. Our guide Stefan was very professional, humorous and informative, and combined with a very capable vehicle we covered a large area using highland roads. Stefan used his local knowledge to choose a route which mostly avoided busy tourist areas. We also had a short hike in the foothills of Hekla which gave us a great opportunity to experience the feeling of real wilderness and the amazing unique landscapes of Iceland. We took packed lunches and ate these at Landmannalauger campsite and had the opportunity to try the hot springs. This excursion was the highlight of an amazing nine days in Iceland.
We were torn about whether to take a tour to Landmannalaugar or to try to drive it ourselves. We weighed all the options and tours and in the end, we are SO happy we chose to go with Southcoast Aventure! Our tour guide Heimur (sorry if I spelled your name wrong!) was AMAZING! He was full of character and stories and he was an absolute joy to tour with! The weather the night before had been absolutely atrocious with dangerous wind warnings and when we woke, we were concerned that the day would be a wash. It rained, but it cleared enough when it really counted so we feel blessed to have had the opportunity to see Landmannalaugar! There is nothing like it! The ring road, all the waterfalls, volcanoes and glaciers of Iceland are AMAZING but your trip is not complete without a ride into the inner island where the landscape is totally different and equally as amazing! I SO wanted to see the colored mountains of Landmannalaugar and I got to see them! Beyond happy! Thank you Southcoast Adventure for a truly memorable and amazing day! tack! Þakka þér fyrir!
Hermann was an amazing tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about many aspects of Iceland and we learned a lot which was great to have early in our 18 day trip. The sites he took us to were breathtaking and it didn't hurt that we had good weather. He urged us to hop in the hot springs at the peak of the trip and it was totally worth it.
Highly recommended. Our driver Helgi was great. Top driver dooe all those rough landscapes. Knew a lot to tell us and was also super funny. We've had the outing and time of our lives. Thank you for seeing and photographing all that beauty. Helgi will stay with us for the rest of our trip through Iceland. Along the way, if we go out to dinner, puffins will see 🤣🤣, etc.. We'll think about him often. Helgi, THANKS FOR THE UNFORGETTABLE DAY. 🤗🤗 Carine & André
Very nice excursion. Stunning landscapes. We had an extremely kind driver..
We decided to go on a private tour to Landmannalaugar at quite short notice. But the communication and organization worked great overnight. We were picked up on time and friendly at the hotel with a huge jeep. Our Icelandic Helge, Volcano Hunter, took us to Hekla Volcano and then to the Landmannalaugar area. We were allowed to decide when and where to stop to take photos. In the Landmannalaugar Helge then let us hike for 2h. It was fantastic. He explained the area, showed us every glacier from the volcano and was extremely sympathetic. We had a lot of fun. We drove across snowfields, through rivers where no rental car can go through. Helge was at home in the area and knew every stone. We felt safe every second and could so relaxed experience a wonderful day we will never forget. Great! This day tour was worth every franc and even more for what we experienced. TAKK Helge!!! It was THE highlight and we recommend it to anyone who wants to experience Iceland from the perspective of an Icelander and not from the guide. Thanks also to Sigga Frida for organising the tour quickly. You're a great team! Keep it up!
