Itinerary
Our guide will meet you in the bus parking lot behind the Ice Cave Bistro in Vík (on the side facing the ocean). From here, we ride a modified super jeep off-road up to Kötlujökull glacier to explore the great Katla Ice Cave.
You will hike on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and witness the amazing blue and black ice. Please note: Ice caves are natural formations that change constantly due to shifting weather conditions and seasonal elements like temperature, sunlight, and precipitation. As a result, the cave's appearance may differ from the photos shown. For each tour, we visit the best accessible naturally formed ice cave available, chosen based on current conditions and safety considerations. These changes are entirely at the discretion of nature, making every visit a unique experience.
We return to Vík after the ice cave adventure, where you will be dropped off back at the meeting point.

We did the Katla Ice Cave tour. We were already in Vik so we met them there instead of driving with them from Reykjavik. Our tour guides name was Alex and he was as much a highlight as the caves themselves. He was a social and personable tour guide! He taught us a lot about the caves and the region but also had many interesting personal stories to share like how he’d been on film sets in the locations we saw! He was also amazing with the kids in our tour group. The ice caves themselves change every year and we’d have liked to have seen bigger ones but that is largely out of their control.
We absolutely loved our Katla ice cave tour with Arctic Adventures! It was such a unique way to experience Iceland's incredible glacial landscape, and we'd highly recommend adding it to your itinerary. The adventure starts with a fun, bumpy Super Jeep ride through the rugged terrain, which is an experience in itself. Once you arrive, you get to explore the extraordinary ice cave, with its striking combinations of blue ice, black volcanic ash, and otherworldly formations. It's unlike anything we'd experienced before. Our guide, Steven (we believe that was his name), was fantastic and helped make the excursion both fun and memorable. We visited in mid-October and took an afternoon tour. The cave was relatively quiet, and we were able to get right in without much waiting, which made the experience even better. One helpful tip for anyone concerned about claustrophobia: you can decide how far into the cave you're comfortable going, and you can see the exit throughout the experience. In our group, some people explored farther inside while others chose to wait outside. Both options allowed everyone to enjoy the experience at their own comfort level. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a side of Iceland that feels almost otherworldly. Between the Super Jeep ride, the dramatic scenery, and the ice cave itself, the whole excursion was memorable from beginning to end. We highly recommend the Katla ice cave tour and Arctic Adventures. Don't miss this one if you're exploring Iceland's South Coast!
While it was a unique experience, I was very disappointed that there was really no tour guide information provided. Our guide certainly brought us there safely and was very nice, but I had to ask questions to learn anything about the glaciers and the answers were very brief, so not information was given unfortunately
This was such a wonderful tour. Our guide, Peter, gave us insights and background on the amazing forces of nature that form the ice caves. It was a great day and one of the highlights of an incredible trip.
Our guide was informative, funny, and did a great job!! The ice caves were a wonder. One of our favourite excursions we did on our trip. Unfortunately we forgot the guides name but ask for the guide with the Canadian wife from Ontario!!
This tour was great from start to finish! The Katla Ice Cave was really cool and as a bonus the landscape/glacier was visually stunning and absolutely beautiful. The Super Jeep ride to get there is quite bumpy, but it’s all part of the fun. We booked the earliest slot and ended up in a small group, which was perfect for beating the crowds. A huge shoutout to our guide, Eric! He was funny, incredibly knowledgeable, and highly safety-conscious throughout the tour. He took awesome photos for us as well. Thank you, Erik, for making our Iceland trip so memorable!
Excellent trip to an other worldly location
Guide (Eric) was great!! However, we had booked this SPECIFICALLY to ride in a SuperJeep, and ended up in a modified Van (which isn't what we booked and paid extra for).
Katlatrack Ice Cave tour from Vik.
An Unforgettable Experience in Beautiful Iceland! 🇮🇸💙 Our Katla Ice Cave and Super Jeep Tour was truly one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland! Sylvester was an amazing guide. He was so knowledgeable about the glaciers and their history, and he made the whole experience fun and entertaining. You could tell he really loved what he does and enjoyed sharing Iceland’s natural beauty with us. The ice caves were absolutely breathtaking! The beautiful blue ice was even more incredible in person, and it’s a sight I’ll never forget. We were also lucky enough to have sunny, beautiful Icelandic weather, which made the day even more special. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Iceland. Thank you, Sylvester, for such a wonderful and memorable adventure! 💙❄️
Sylvester was the best guide!! He made our trip feel safe yet exciting. Very knowledgeable So beautiful and unique experience
SO MUCH FUN! the ride there was fun. the cave exploration was educational and super unique. i visited in october.
A great bucket list experience, it is a scenic and enjoyable ride through a dystopian volcanic landscape to the edge of the glacier to enter natural ice caves. Outfitted with a helmet and clamp-on spikes which are very effective to avoid slipping on the ice. The caves themselves remarkable (little damp as we were there in September) but quite the experience. Alone a great experience but then all was brought to life by our guide Alex. Personable, funny, experienced, and knowledgeable he did not only safely take us to the sights but taught us a ton about the area and the history in an entertaining and memorable way. We are not ones for organized tours but after our experience with Alex, we will be more open to the idea in the future. Thanks Alex for a memorable and fun day!
Be prepared to walk uphill. Also, be at the meeting point earlier to find the tour operator. No need to carry back pad or any bags
We took this in September 2026. Our guide was excellent. Good sense of humor and had great local knowledge. The scenery on the ride up was like being on another planet. Hiking to the ice caves with ice cleats on, and the walk in the caves was a once in a lifetime experience. We also had some of our group who had to leave Iceland early due to an emergency at home, and the Trip Advisor cancellation policy got them their money back. Kudos to them. Awesome experience - Don't miss it.
Amazing and unique tour. We loved it! This was unforgettable and we are so glad we did it! The guide was awesome.
A fun interesting experience! However, we were not expecting such large groups. Our group had 18-20. When we arrived at the glacier, it was crowded with many other tour groups. Although it was certainly a highlight of our trip and we were glad we did it, it was just not what we were expecting. There was plenty of photo opps but it started to feel more like they were designed to occupy us while we waited our turn to go into the shallow cave (only comfortably accomodated a handful of us at a time). A bonus activity...trying out an ice pick! Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly...entertaining:) and a local!
Highly recommend this tour. The Glacier and surrounding ice is amazing! Our guide was excellent and we learned so much about the area. We had to rescue another truck that got stuck and even that added to the fun! A unique and amazing place to visit.
Was expecting the ice cave to be longer in length. Duration of time in the cave itself was under 10mins which is disappointing given the amount of money you spend on the tour. Tour guide swore a lot and informed of lots of bad situations which occurred and made a joke out of them rather than being serious about it. The drive to the cave was in silence and the guide did not provide information about surrounding area or land marks as he should have late pick up and company booked through was not the same as who picked us up.
Our tour guide (Ale) was great! V friendly & informative, & took pictures for everyone at different stops of the tour. The excursion was about 3 hrs long so didn’t eat up too much time out of the day.
Amazing experience going onto the glacier and into an ice cave. The guide Robert did a fantastic job! Otherworldly views and surroundings, something not to be missed!
Such a unique experience. Exciting and picturesque drive out to the glacier and then a fun time around. Wish there was more time in the cave and a better one to walk through but you get what nature gives you.
We did the Katla Cave tour. The experience itself was nice and the scenery was incredible, but the cave itself was very small and the tour was quite short (around 20 metres). It’s an excursion worth doing, but we felt the price was excessive for what it offers
We had the best guide. She was great and told us so much great information about the glacier and the caves while keeping it fun! The hike up was beautiful and doable. The caves were so cool inside! Definitely a must see.
It was interesting to see the glacier up close. The cave itself was very short distance from opening.
it was a nice experience. Would have been nice to be able to explore a bit more. The ride was amazing. Beautiful scenary.
Hike was about one hour round trip and drive was about 1.5 hours round trip. Spent about 20-30 minutes around actual cave which is a little smaller than imagined. Scenery was amazing and your guide did a great job with details.
Amazing experience that captured adventure and beauty. The jeep ride was so much fun with great spots for nature photography. The glacier and ice cave constantly evolving and changing. Very impressive and beautiful to see up close. Our guide was so fun. Gave us relevant information and answered questions.
This excursion was so insanely cool. The caves themselves are slightly underwhelming since you don’t actually walk through them for very long. HOWEVER, the entire experience is so picturesque that it makes absolutely worth the money. Our guide, Orri, was excellent. He was very friendly and enthusiastic, and made the whole experience very authentic. It’s an Icelandic once in a lifetime experience that you have to try!
Fantastic experience! Bjorgota Harder was a great guide!
Amazing! Tour guide was great, and very knowledgeable. After a long hike, seeing the ice caves was a unique experience. Must see, must do! Loved it
Martin is the man! It was a fun adventure and Martin was fantastic; great knowledge, his pacing, and energy. Best German volcano ice cave guy we’ve ever had!
It was well worth the price I paid
This tour was such an amazing experience!! My family and I had a blast, and all consider Katla volcanic ice caves to be among the most beautiful sights we’ve ever seen. The hike up to the caves was a bit steep, but rope handholds and the provided crampons made that no problem. The stunning views are worth every bit of effort. Our guide, Ale, was fantastic and made the (quite bumpy) ride to and from location part of the fun experience. Ale’s visual demonstrations, expert knowledge of the volcano / glaciers / surrounding area, and his affable, easygoing demeanor made our tour especially enjoyable. Ale’s explanation of the relationship between Iceland’s glaciers and volcanoes, and how glacial movement shapes the land was super helpful as I’d honestly been quite confused how fire and ice could coexist the way it does in Iceland. I found myself coming back to his mini-lesson throughout the remainder of our trip along the southern portion of the Ring Road and it really helped me appreciate how incredible and unique Iceland’s environment truly is! Ale also took special care to make sure some of the stragglers in our group did not get too far behind, and even had my 73 year old mother (who is in great shape for her age but isn’t the fastest walker) set the pace for the group on the way down, reassuring her that there was no rush to reach the bottom. Overall this tour far exceeded my expectations, and I would happily book with these lovely people again. Thank you Arctic Adventures, and thank you Ale!!
There were some super aspects of the tour and some not so much. The good: well, it’s a glacier and an ice cave and that in itself is a wonderful experience. Our guide was friendly, funny, knowledgeable and very demonstrative toward the entire group and took care of those who required special assistance. Excellent choice on behalf of his employers; they did very well. The drive out and back was fun! It’s hard to call these souped up vans “super jeeps”, they were more like monster trucks but actually passenger vans. Hats off to those who designed these including meats tires and a snorkel. The not so great: The helmets (which are stored in the vans I think) smelled AWFUL. Think of a male teenage child that left his laundry in the washer for a couple weeks and then wore it. We all had to shower afterward since the smell DID NOT come off. The smell permeated the entire van. Just be warned. Finally, we chose this as a smaller group tour but there were probable another 25 vehicles at the site full of people that were at the site at the same time and at least an hour and a half or so of the tour was spent standing around waiting. Had the tour disclosed that we would have been able to better plan. We would have planned the time a little differently knowing now; should be a last activity on your schedule for the day.
We had a wonderful time! Baddi was the best guide, full of fun information, jokes, anecdotes, and just overall warm and friendly during the whole experience. Would hardly recommend this, well worth every penny. We had a bluebird day.
This adventure is not for the faint of heart. If you gave ANY disability this is NOT for you! We read easy and moderate for the description. And although Peter was a wonderful guide and we ended up haveing a great time, this was not moderate. It was difficult!! You end up hiking with Crampons on your shoes in ice trails for about a mile. The trail is up, down and over little “bridges” which were boards set up over flowing water. The reason this is important to know is because we had a member of our party who has trouble with anything that’s not level. She ended up staying with the car because she couldn’t participate. The rest of us managed but this was a group of people in our 60’s who do moderate exercise. We managed but were pretty darn sore and very worn out! I believe the description should reflect this information. All the trouble was worth what we saw and learned but it would have helped to know ahead of time.
To be honest was not that impressive, you depend a lot on the glacier conditions, and the cave tour was super quick. Paying that much for stepping on the glacier is something to reconsider. At least add 1h of glacier hiking if the cave is not in good conditions to be explored.
Fantastic experience! Knowledgeable guide and great weather. Jeep journey was fun. Ale (our guide) explained all the dangers and how to avoid them, as well as krampons and helmets. He also explained a lot about how the glacier formed and how it's changing. It was beautiful and interactive.
Super fun tour, within a nice 2-3hr window so not too long. We booked through Arctic Adventures. Fun drive in the jeep to the glacier - expect it to be bumpy :) ice caves were very cool - what you will see will depend on time of year and how much the glacier has melted etc. We went in August-from what the guide was saying perhaps it is better a month before. But still loved it!
What an amazing experience! Helgi our guide was great from start to finish with Icelandic stories and facts during the jeep ride, as well as information and history while on the glacier. He prepared us well and kept our group safe while still having fun throughout the hike and cave tour. Everything was spectacular, pictures don't do it justice.
Great adventure overall. The glacier is a 40min drive via Super Jeep and then the ice cave is another 15min walk up the glacier. The actual ice cave size and location will vary on the specific day of course. Our guide, Helke, was really fun and gave us a lot of information about the glacier. Be prepared for tough conditions though. Definitely wear waterproof pants, jacket, boots and gloves and carry extra clothes for when you return!
Awesome experience. Our guide, Alex without the “x” was very good. He was very knowledgeable, informative, and did a good job interacting with the group. I would highly recommend.
Fantastic views, amazing pictures and our tour guide Kamil ( if I remember and wrote correctly) was very helpful, explaining to us about the surroundings and the tour
One of the highlights of our trip! The ice caves are magical! This tour company is efficient and skilled so they make the Jeep ride, the hike, and the jaunt through the caves fun and educational.
Loves our guide. Fabulous experience the ice caves were so beautiful and interesting
Exceeded Expectations! Wonderful, knowledgeable guide with safety awareness. Only issue was finding the meeting point as the address on the ticket was for KaltaTrack and we ended up just behind Ice wear in Vik.
Our visit to the ice cave was amazing. At first we thought it might be a bit gimmicky at the busy meeting point in Vik but once we were out of the jeep and on our way into the caves it was a whole different t deal! Peter was a fun and knowledgeable guide and the caves are stunning. It’s a great privilege to be able to enter them (especially in the summer!) and Artic Adventures has devised a wonderful trip to make the most of it. A+.
A beautiful, amazing place you could never get to see on your own. The guide was great too. We learned a lot.
