Gunnar was a very funny, chatty and knowledgeable guide. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend to others. Wonderful views and a good amount of time to look around the Ice cave. It’s worth the money as this isn’t a trip you could take yourself without a guide!
The transportation was cool. Scenery was beautiful. Tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, & made the experience more enjoyable.
Great drive through fantastic landscape, impressive cave, Gunnar was a great guide. Very enjoyable for whole family.
This was a very fun ride to the glacier in the first snow of the season. Actual Ice cave walk was pretty quick and worth it! Beautiful views, rainbows, delightful and knowledgeable guide.
The Katla Ice Cave tour is excellent. We are so glad we took this tour. Our guide, Alex, could not have been better. The tour and the have were fascinating. If you are thinking about doing this, don’t hesitate. And, ask for Alex!
It was a great experience. The team was very supportive after we had some car trouble and they rescheduled us. Alex was awesome!! Friendly, knowledgeable, very personable, and played some excellent tunes. Several stops for photos and information, the cave was cool to check out.
SO.MUCH.FUN! Alex was a wonderful tour guide. He was very concerned with meeting everyone’s needs. We stopped at scenic areas for photographs, he gave us detailed explanations and he never hurried us. The cave was incredible!!!! What a wonderful experience. Once in a lifetime!
Totally recommend this tour. Out tour guide was amazing. very friendly, Knowledgeable, and adventurous.
Otto was an amazing guide, he was funny and provided unique insight into the country. We would absolutely book again!
It was a fun half day excursion. I think it might have been a little overpriced for what it was though. Definitely expected more of a grand ice cave and a little more time exploring one.
great! beautiful day with fascinating sights and interesting guide who led us. All was great!
Make sure to check all the info. Some excursions have a meeting place, do not put the destination in your GPS. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The transportation was comfortable. The glacier and cave is worth seeing!
This tour is incredible and is worth the money and the time. It’s very unique. You feel like you’ve gone into another world. It’s landscape like you won’t see again. Alex was a great tour guide. He answered all our questions and was a lot of fun. You could tell that he genuinely cares for the Icelandic landscape. The ride was comfortable and a fun experience riding in a car with huge tires.
The cave is small but the drive out and the walk around the cave area were very interesting. You should go.
Katla Ice cave was a great first time experience. The blue ice combined with lava showed unusual interesting patterns. Thanks to Gravel Travel.
Great trip! Our guide Ingo was great. Would recommend getting to the meeting place early to get seats up front in the van. Learned a lot and took in some beautiful other worldly scenery.
Excellent tour, knowledgeable and funny guide - highly recommended! Will do a repeat during next visit.
The ice cave is a very cool feature to see. It is not very large but you are able to walk back 15 m or so and get fully inside the glacier. The view from the cave is really beautiful, especially on a clear day like we had. Our guide Gunnar shared some interesting facts about the cave with us, and drove us safely to and from the destination.
Our guide Alex was fantastic. We learned Icelandic history and a lot of information about the glacier and the Ice Cave . It was one of the best experiences of our trip.
The Ice Cave Tour was a highlight of our trip to the south coast of Iceland. Got to walk on a Glacier and experience this awesome ice cave. Would definitely recommend.
The location of this cave made it clear ice with black volcanic ash…. It’s beautiful, but it is not the blue ice that you hear about. Nonetheless, the ride out and the incredible stories you hear from your guide make this excellent way to spend your morning or afternoon! It’s pretty impossible to even explain the vastness of these volcanic eruptions, and knowing that some of these happened thousands and thousands of years ago, and yet remain mostly unchanged is something I will never forget!
Incredible nature work! The cave not big and long, but we can see the layer in the ice wall clearly. Highly recommend this tour.
This was a great excursion. The guide was funny and knowledgeable. The ice cave was a highlight and in spite of the bad weather it was well worth our time.
verpriced and oversold. “Small group” was about 20 people, and the cave is so small it can only fit that many — packed, hard to hear the guide. Total time 2.5 hours, most of it on the bus; only about 20 minutes in a small closed-end cave, not the bigger caves we have seen on other tours. Reconsider if this price is worth staying only 20 minutes in this tiny ice cave. I would suggest to book the tours by other operator
It was a great experience but it was smaller than we expected. Our guide Otto was very conscious of our safety , personable and fun!!
The time spent in the cave is relatively short, but you also get to visit other scenic places with nice views. We also got to drive on the black beach and see whale bones ashore.
Just back from an amazing day. Spent time at two fantastic waterfalls and the highlight was the trip to the ice cave. Absolutely brilliant tour guide Alex. Highly recommend this experience
Our guide was excellent! Strong Viking voice & very friendly. Always looking out for our safety & keeping things light! I’d highly recommend the experience.
This experience was great! Alex was our guide - he was personable and we really appreciated his knowledge. It was more than just a cave tour. The bus made a few stops for incredible scenery pics. The meeting point was easy to find with plenty of parking and a restroom close by if needed.
Our guide was super knowledgeable and clearly worked the grounds to keep them sustainable for visitors. He was fun! Told us some great stories and even snapped a picture for us! The ice cave itself is absolutely magical.
Alex was awesome and you should let him drive the superjeeps more he deserves it. We learned a lot about the geography and the history of the ice caves. We had a really fun time
Alex was our guide on the Katla Ice Cave tour. He was knowledgeable and made it fun. I saw that he made an effort to speak with everyone individually on our tour.
Oh WOW! Gravel Tours offered this incrediable tour that we thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. Despite the rain it was the most amazing afternoon. Absolutely loved the Black Sand and photo stops. The Cave experience was breathtaking. The Cave is small but this did not affect our enjoyment. I love the return trip where our fabulous tour guide took us the the beach in the super jeep and dodged waves. So much fun! I loved the tale of the whale that wasted up on shore etc. Our tour guide was funny, charismatic and went out of his way to ensure we all had the best experience. We called him John as his Icelandic name is too complicated. Thank you John for making this such a fun and memorable experience.
The 4x4 drive experience going to the Katla cave is the best. We have the best and funny tour guide as well, Peter. He truly loves what he’s doing.
The guide knew his stuff and we had an excellent experience. The drive on the beach at the end was great!
The pickup was a little messy as one of the drivers was slightly late. Our tour guide explained a lot of the landscape we drove through and also explained that the cave we were going to was pretty small. Still gave us all the time we wanted. Overall, worth the money to have the experience!
I went solo for the katla ice cave tour and had a wonderful time! JOHN was the best tour guide. Knowledgable, adventurous, funny, and quite handsome if I do say so my self. Oh did I mention he has a great Playlist for the ride too! He was a great hype man for photo ops too, and got the best angles. It really is a beautiful and relaxing tour.
Other worldly! What a great experience. Our guide was fantastic. Not only did he show us the ice cave but he explained everything about them and how they form. He gave us history of the area, walked us around the foot of the glacier, and drove us to a scenic overlook where we were able to get some amazing views. He wrapped up the tour by driving us along the beach on the way back to town.
This company does not provide you the ice cleats/shoe chains that other companies do therefore, unless you have your own ice shoes, I do not recommend the company. It is not really safe. While major sections can be gravel and therefore no problem. All you need is a small section where the ice has become a slick for it to become dangerous. The guide was very fun. He did a great job of giving us information about the glaciers. The tour was interesting. Note this is a large ATV vehicle not small ATVs for individual drivers.
The ice cave we got to explore is very small, probably only 20 meters deep. The tour lists as 3 hours long but in fact, it only lasted 2h 20m for us. We spent only about 30 minutes at the destination so the rest of the times were wasted communting back and forth.
This was a disappointing experience overall. We received very little guidance throughout, and there was only a small cave to see at the end. I’m not sure if the ice caves were out of season during our visit, but the experience did not meet our expectations or seem to match what we anticipated. Unfortunately, we would not recommend it based on our experience.
I cannot say enough about what an amazing trip this was. We were blessed with an incredible tour guide, Jon. He made the experience something neither my son or myself will ever forget.
John was a fantastic guide, sharing information and stories as we drove to the cave. The drive was fantastic. The cave beautiful, though a little bit of a let down. It is not very deep. Maybe 50 feet. A lit of time driving for a short experience in the cave itself.
Fantastic. Thank you Vala our guide, you were awesome looking after all of us and keeping everyone entertained throughout with stories of Icelandic elves and trolls, Icelandic history, facts about nature, animals, weather, governments, Vikings and so much more. We felt safe during the journey as well.
We visited Katla ice cave on Aug 26. The sights on the glacier were beautiful, the ice cave was interesting, and the guide shared a lot of interesting information on the surroundings. There were some issues with practicalities. We were informed the prior afternoon that due to overbooking, our tour was pushed one hour ahead, which was somewhat inconvenient for our itinerary. When we got to the cave, it turned out that there were not enough helmets, so we had to take turns going into the cave. The tour was advertised as three hours long, but we were only there for two hours. There was sufficient time in all the places we visited, but I wonder if we missed an intended stop along the way, or why else the time estimate was off by so much.
It's a bit rugged, but a lot of fun. The winds at some stops was crazy. Tunnels are wild! Gravel Travel had great tour guides.
Wow – what an experience! How often do you get the chance to go into an ice cave let alone one in Iceland? This is easily one of my favorite highlight moments from Iceland and favorite images I captured. Our tour guide was superb – he was very knowledgeable and funny! The group is intimate, about ~15 people and everyone was an all around vibe. Highly recommend.
It was great and easy experience. If you’ve never seen a glacier/ ice cave up and personal before it’s definitely worth it. The tour guide was very nice and drove us/ took care of us.
Amazing! The journey made the adventure even more enjoyable!
