Very unique and fascinating experience. The guide was funny and informative. Very much worth the stop
Interesting history that is not what you’d expect in Iceland. VERY well-informed guide. We learned a tremendous amount Definitely exceeded our expectations
Visiting the Caves of Hella was fascinating for a number of reasons - not the least of which were the caves themselves. It was interesting to learn the history of the caves, the ways they have been used over the years, and to enter into several of them. Our group was small, so we were able to ask questions of our guide. It would have been nice if the guide had spoken more about all of the cave markings that are there and not just a select few. One of the caves is still used to dry meat, and some of that was available for purchase at the end of the tour. The trip wasn't too long, and it was informational. - Take the tour if sandstone caves and ancient history are your thing, but don't worry that you are missing an essential Icelandic experience if you choose to spend your time/money elsewhere.
Fascinating tour. Our guide was hilarious and very informative. Very different experience. Worth doing.
Very cool experience. Guide was great and very knowledgeable. Liked the small group size. Lots of local knowledge.
Our tour guide, Stefan, was amazing and hilarious. He had great stories from his childhood since his family has lived in the property for generations. The caves were very cool and fun to explore. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area.
The caves were very interesting. Our guide was great. The problem was that there were way too many people on our tour. We couldn’t hear the guide most of the time because we were not close enough. It was difficult to get photos without other people in the picture. For the price, there should be a limit of people on the tour. The caves are just not that big!!!
We went to the caves on our drive back from Vik to Reykjavik. Our guide Stephan is funny and very informative! Definitely knowledgeable and fun guide. The caves tour was more than I expected which was a great surprise. Really cool if you are into the local histories and even mysteries. I believe this site will be talked about more in the future. If you're a history buff, you'll need to stop by.
Great tour! Very interesting and informative!
My husband and I went on this tour & in our opinion, it's a definite must! We saw the flags on our way to Vik & knew that we wanted to stop by & check it out on our way back to Reykjavik. Unfortunately, I do not remember the tour guide 's name, but she was the great grand daughter of the man who purchased the land. The history of these specific man made caves was incredibly engaging especially since this was our guide 's heritage, so it was very personal. It was so fascinating to learn more about Iceland & honestly step into history. One of the caves is thought to be an original church, it was incredible! We wondered why an Iceland historical society isn't trying to preserve and study these caves more, especially with the ancient writing apparent on the walls. It's definitely worth a stop. We saw on our trip a lava cave, an ice cave, and now man made caves. All worth it!

Our tour guide Hanna was incredible and shared incredible knowledge of Icelandic history. We loved it!!
The trip in the Caves of Hella is absolutely a must do when visiting Iceland. Especialy because of the crew that works there. It was a good experience from beginning to end. Our guide there was a one of a kind, we immediately got the impression that he was made for the job.
Great tour, easy access, amazing local guide full of stories and very informative!! With a perfect balance of information and great Icelandic humour! Would definitely recommend if your passing through!
I would greatly recommend this tour! The history as told by Stefan Smari Asmundarson was fascinating. His quips and side stories were also a highlight of the tour. We purchased bottle number 118 from him of the special cave cured Floki. It's a great souvenir to bring back to the states! The farm is interesting and we were shown a few caves while taking a walk around some of the property. Some it was just a peek and others we went into. One had a small hallway but I wouldn't say it was claustrophobic at all. It wasn't raining or crazy windy when we had our tour on Sept 13 at 10 am, which made the walk pleasant. This is located right on the edge of the town Hella. The Yellow Schoolbus Cafe is across the parking lot. The complete outside of the building is full of signatures of all the visitors from over the years. They have a nice selection of nick nacks and souvenirs inside. You can try some of the candy for free. There were some sheep and horses on the property, but if you've been to Iceland, that's pretty much expected! Everyone was very friendly and I used my Visa credit card to pay with no problem. This was a great stop to start off our 9 day trip around Iceland as it gave us some great history to think about as we traveled. I can now say I've been in one of the oldest historical places in Iceland. That's pretty neat to me.
An interesting place with a mysterious and still unclear past and purpose. Unfortunately, the attractive presentation and marketing on the website do not quite correspond to the actual condition of the site. The place itself is intriguing, but the overall experience did not fully meet the expectations created by the website.
Interesting and informative tour. Guide was fantastic! Very cool little tour!
Fascinating trip back in time to the times before first vikings arrived to Iceland.
Great guided tour! It was easy to book directly, and easy to find meeting point. I liked the little cafe, and the fact there's lots of parking space. Guide had vast knowledge and made the tour engaging, not throwing only facts or statistics.
We had a great experience with Stefan oud passionate guide today. He knew a lot of stories and details. The bonus was the Floki whiskey we bought that was matured during 5y in these caves. A recommender. Eric and Sander.
Really awesome tour! I was surprised at how interesting the stories behind the caves were.
Quite a place, if you are aware that there are other wisest believes, and if you think there are other “things” happening around you then join them in the tour.
This is a very interesting tour. Stephan was knowledgeable and provided unique information about the ancient history of Iceland. The caves were airy and easily accessible.
Our guide was Stefan. He was funny and personable which made the tour interesting. You see a lot of ancient text and learn some cool lore about the inhabitants of Iceland. I was unsure how this would be different from other Cave Tours I had done on the island, but it was 100% worth it and very different. If you’re passing through Hella, you must do this tour!
Fantastic experience with great knowledge shared. Stephan was great. Booking through Viator was fast since I basically did it right before scheduled time.
Fascinating tour with great guide who was engaging and informative. External appearance of the caves does not convey the extent of what lies underground and the historical significance of these caves to early settlers was fascinating. Highly recommend.
Great tour of man made caves. The guide made the experience. He had the best sense of humor and injected lots of Icelandic history. He is very knowledgeable about the local history of the area.
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor.
The guide was passionate and well informed. He seemed to really care about the caves and their history. He shared loads of interesting information.
Fabulous. Fun. Informative. Great staff.. Perfect length.
Our tour guide, Stefan was both knowledgeable of the caves, the history of the area and had the best comedic timing to keep you engaged. Truly an amazing and informative tour. So much history. I highly recommend!
We chose this on a whim, very fast and it was one of the best historical tours we took! The guide was SO good, funny, serious, engaged and so informative and interactive!! Highly recommended!
Well worth the time and money it was very informative and fun to listen to some of the history of these dwellings
Wonderful guide - he is the grandson of the person who built it! Learned about history of Iceland as well. I would recommend adding some video if remotely within that family's budget and have us sit in the cave and watch it there. I loved the grandkids! Thank you so much. Also add a lot more merchandise in the store.
Very interesting and unique tour, with a fascinating look at history. I learned a great deal about settlements of Iceland. The tour guide/owner was friendly, intelligent, and very passionate about the caves and their history. Highly recommend it!
Stephan was very funny. Good information about the caves. It was a nice experience.
I didn't really know what to expect and was surprised how much there was to be said about some man-made caves. It was less visual than I was expecting, but still really interesting. The guide packed a lot of information in to the 1 hour tour. The only downside was that his language was definitely aimed more for an adult audience, despite there being children present. The tour costs around €50, which is a lot by European standards but on the cheaper side for activities in Iceland.
Was very interesting and really good guide! For children there were some parts that felt lengthy as there were a lot of explanations without activity.
This was my second time doing the Caves of Hella tour with Stefan - I went with a group of friends a few years ago and loved it so much I brought my husband to the caves on our visit to Iceland this summer. The caves are a fascinating relic of pre-Viking-settlement Iceland, with lots of insight into the blending of Celtic and Nordic peoples in the early days of the country. My husband is hard to impress and he was very impressed. The tours are group tours but the groups are small enough that it’s not overwhelming and it doesn’t feel too “touristy”. Since my last visit they’ve also added a traditional smokehouse where they smoke local lamb and wild salmon from the nearby river and sell it in the gift shop - it is delicious!
It was uniq and very intresting
Excellent tour. Excellent guide. Lovely unique experience of the caves
Our guide made the visit worth it. The way she told the story of the caves and the history was captivating and kept us engaged.
This is a hidden gem in the history of Iceland. If you want to learn more about the history of those who settled Iceland, this is a great place to start!
excellent moment of iceland history
Really nice trip. We wanted to do more cultural trip, we’ve been to Iceland many times and did all the usual tourist stuff but not involving the people. This was eye opening and the guide with her historical perspectives was so insightful. Taking us back to the Irish and the vikings and how they mixed. And the first church was wow.
We were in the area and this was very close to where we were staying so figured we would try it. It was much more interesting than I even expected. The owners of this site have done a very nice job restoring the caves and producing and interesting experience. They still have a lot of work to understand all the history but they are honest about that and are dealing with lots of complicated history. The guide was very friendly and happy to answer all the questions we had and spend extra time with us. Definitely recommended for any history and unique site buffs!
This cave tour was really fun! Our guide was great and spent a lot of time providing information on the tour! Definitely worth a stop, especially if you’re interested in history and archaeology.
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about the history of Iceland. The tour was very informational and provided a lot of information as we went about our trip. The caves were a very cool sight to see and it's very easy to navigate.
Excellent tour. Stefan was a great guide, story teller, and very engaging. Loved the tour and the history and stories behind the caves. Very enjoyabel and good for all ages!
