This was one of the great experiences of our trip. The weather was perfect, the vineyards were dressed in their beautiful fall colors, the hike was uphill in the beginning and then once into the vineyards, it was mostly level. James is a fantastic guide and checked the pace with us several times (we're old and able to keep up). James informed us about various sites and is well-informed about this area of Austria and its vineyards, winemakers, and regional wines. Topped off with a wonderful lunch and a private wine tasting at Weingut Biegler. We just enjoyed a Biegler Pinot Noir last night. Highly recommend that you book this tour.

Itinerary
The tour meeting point is Vienna's 'Wien Mitte' railway station (09:00 between Apr-Oct & 09:30 from Nov-Mar). Once we've met and introduced ourselves, we'll board a train southwards (approx 30 minutes) to the heart of the Vienna Woods.
Summer We begin our hike in the lovely spa town of Baden, once a favourite country retreat of Beethoven. We meander through the classic village centre and its gorgeous parks before hiking along forest trails towards a magnificent elevated viewpoint which overlooks the Vienna basin & the Wienerwald in all directions. This spot alone is a photographer's dream! We then enter the vineyards, wandering through row upon row of lush green vines. As reward for our efforts, we'll take a break sat among the vines for an open-air wine tasting. Winter Our train brings us directly to the vineyards of the Thermal Region and to one of Austria’s oldest wine making institutions, steeped in middle-age tradition and history. We'll discover how the monastic orders became wine pioneers of their time, develop an understanding of what has shaped the Austrian wine landscape over time, and consider in what direction it may be moving forward...we'll discuss this during our first wine tasting of course!
Summer & Winter We then continue to the picturesque wine village of Gumpoldskirchen to have lunch at one of its traditional Austrian wine taverns. The main highlight of the day is an afternoon wine tasting, which takes place at one of the village's finest producers and is led by a local winemaker. This tasting allows for plenty of opportunities to ask questions regarding how wine is produced to give an intimate insight into the challenges facing vintners today. The tour ends with a short train ride back to the city center. You'll arrive to your hotel in plenty of time to freshen up before dinner, the opera, the theater, or the concert! Whichever it is, you'll sleep well that night!

My family and I had a truly memorable experience on this tour. We saw amazing views of the Austrian countryside, walked through actual working vineyards, ate some great local cuisine, and tasted some delicious local wine during a tasting hosted by the owner himself sitting in his beautiful courtyard. What made the day truly special though was our guide (James). He took the time to talk to all four of us, shared tons of facts about the region and the wine (as well as his own personal stories), and provide top-notch translation at the winery. He made sure that we were enjoying ourselves and made us feel like we were talking to an old friend. The only caution is that the five+ mile hike contains some steep uphill and downhill sections, so be prepared for that. We would highly recommend this tour!
Had an amazing time at this tour. James the guide was awesome, and the woods and the vineyards were amazing even though I got a sunburn (so dont forget your sunscreen!). The second part - the wine tasting - was also great and I'm not even a wine person! This tour, the views, and the whole experience will stay in my memory for a long time (I think its gonna be my new 'happy place'), and I definitely recommend it! Thank you James and everyone who's been in our group!
My husband and I did the Vienna Woods Hiking and Wine Tour and we loved it! James was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable and friendly. We met in the morning and rode the train with James and the group to Baden where our hike started. Our group was small, which made the tour feel intimate and exclusive. James was able to give each of us individual attention, answering questions and ensuring that everyone felt included and engaged. The views were beautiful and we learned a lot about the local culture, the towns we hiked through, vineyards, the art of wine making, and the final product itself. We 100% recommend this AMAZING experience!
James was incredible! He met us at the train station, and we rode a train 30 minutes to this adorable little town outside Vienna. He was knowledgeable and really made us feel comfortable during the trip. We went in the winter so we didn't do the hike and instead he planned a second wine tasting for us! Which I rather prefer anyway! I would definitely recommend booking this tour. Totally worth it to see the country outside of the main city.
I booked this as a way to take advantage of glorious weather, taste some new wine and get out of the city on our longer trip. James was amazing- he met us bang on time and took care of everything. He was thoughtful, prepared, informative and funny. We had a short train trip during which he set the stage , explained the geography and characteristics of the wine region and set expectations for the walk and festivities. We disembarked in a storybook town, saw some historical points of interest and started our walk through some lovely woods. The walk was glorious with some slightly challenging parts- wear good shoes- but nothing six middle aged relatively fit people couldnt handle. We reached the high point quickly and then ambled agreeably through the vineyards, towards our lunch and tasting spot. The path is lovely, dotted with heurige tables and little spots where people drink in the summer. We had a fabulous Austrian lunch in a beautiful courtyard, complete with dog welcoming committee and then proceeded to a orovate tasting. Our winemaker host was informative and we really enjoyed his chemistry with his guests and his wine! James translated and provided very knowledgeable and accessible , unpretentious commentary. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and left with two boxes of wine packed for travel and a mission to return. Worth every penny and a splendid way to spend a day! Highly recommend!
We really have fun and delicious food, lovely environment , I will love to come back again and invite more friends
James was fantastic! He did an incredible job of providing information and guiding us throughout the day. It was a truly unique opportunity to explore the Austrian woods and have a one of a kind wine tasting!
Went with zero expectations. First impression was amazing with on the dot pickup at the spot by the charming enthusiastic guide James and 5 handpicked team mates. James took us through the woods a 2 hour trek which was a cakewalk due to his constant motivating words. Then after a brief downhill stroll came to the actual vineyards. A very splendid sight of acres and acres of grapes Fahrenheit and black perfect and ready to be picked. After an hour of walk drenched in this splendor came to the most beautiful lunch place, literally ate under the vines. Finally came the much awaited Wine tasting. A warm humble host welcomed us into his home and served us each of his creation with utmost sincerity and affection. Amidst a very cozy pleasant chatter we relished each of the wines and tried to experience a little of the passion of its creator!!! After this 6,7 hour long magic we dispersed dizzy with content and of course the wine inside and in our hands. I sincerely recommend this tour for any one looking for the most amazing wine tasting experience!! Mr. James is an excellent guide anyone would be at ease with!!
So much fun!!! Get ready to hike an absolutely beautiful trail, have a blast, taste great wine, and learn along the way! Our guide, James, was amazing! He was so knowledgeable and so much fun. It was the most perfect day.
James was wonderful! He is very knowledgeable and fun to be around! 10 out of 10! Best day ever!I have travelled extensively and was very impressed with his expertise!
James was an EXCELLENT tour guide. He truly elevated our experience. BEST DAY EVER!!!! The wines were all excellent and our lunch spot was great!
This was an amazing experience! James was phenomenal as he guided us through a magical day of hiking and exploring the woods and vineyards, then a relaxing lunch and then wine tasting. He was so attentive and informative, it was the loveliest of days. Most highly recommend!!!
Fantastic Day with James hiking the hills and through the vineyards near Baden. James is a charming knowledgeable guide who takes his time to get to know everyone in the tour. The hike/walk does take awhile (definitely earning lunch and wine) so I would recommend brinigng a small snack in addition to a refillable water bottle. Very tasty alpine water along the trail. James picked a terrific place for lunch and the wine tasting with Herr Biegler and Sabina was so memorable on many fronts. Delicious wines of many varieties, informational discussion with a passionate wine maker in Herr Biegler, enjoying chatting with Sabina about their beautiful home and family and an impressive tour of the wine making facilities/cellar. Highly recommend this day!!
Fantastic day trip from start to finish. Appeals to everyone, I’m a wine enthusiast, so I was in my element. Scenery was beautiful, lunch was exceptional, wine tasting was intimate and delightful. Would love to do this again in the late summer / early autumn when the bars are open in the vineyards.
We loved the Vienna wine tour! This was a perfect day trip out of the city. James was knowledgeable and easy going and took us to some fantastic little locations. The walk through the vineyards was beautiful. The wine was delicious! Would definitely go again.
James was a great guide on our hiking wine journey. We saw some beautiful landscapes and learned so much about Austrian wines. The highlight was our tasting at a private home!
Absolutely fantastic day, and James was the best tour guide! The hike was the perfect activity to “earn” our wines. We were rewarded with excellent views of the surrounding vineyards and the foothills of the alps. We also had a chance to wander through some very sweet small towns, and of course tasted plenty of delicious wine. James has curated the perfect experience.
There was a little confusion initially about the schedule, but James set up a half day tour that perfectly met all of our schedules. We met him at the train station with plenty of time to get to know each other on the short ride to the first vineyard. The wine and views were amazing and the even the new-to-us varietals were such a good value to purchase and take with us to fly home with or drink later in the trip. James was such a good guide and we'd book again in a heartbeat!
What a day! I can only highly recommend Venture Vienna! We had a very pleasant day through the vineyards with lovely views and tasting Austrian wines! It was amazing! Both stops for tastings were very unique and I was surprised by the red wine quality as well! I thought I would taste white wines only. We learned a lot about the history as well with many ‘fun facts’ as well from James! He really knows a lot and we can see how much he enjoys doing it! The wine tour was so cool that I booked the kayak tour as well! It is the perfect combo! Really pleasant day in the water. I was not expecting the views from the Danube, incredible! Both tours were the icing on the cake from our trip in Austria! They mustn't be missed!
Really enjoyed this tour. A combination of fantastic scenery strolling through quaint Austria villages experiencing a part of Austria that most tourists don't get to see, with the opportunity to sample some stunning local wines. James our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and the wines produced in this region and was an enthusiastic and friendly host who made everyone on the tour feel included. He also had some great recommendations for things to do and see (including places to eat) whilst we were staying in Vienna. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our day and this is a tour I can thoroughly recommend.
My husband and I had a free day on the front end of our Christmas markets tour so we looked for a unique day tour. As wine lovers this tour seemed perfect and it was. James is personable and friendly. He gave us good information on the places we went, recommended delicious food for our lunch and really made the day feel as if we were hanging out with an old friend. Oh, and the wines, they were fantastic! We got to try wines we've never heard of and learn about the uniqueness of Austrian Reisling. I couldn't recommend him enough. In fact, since I'm a travel agent, I will recommend him to any and clients visiting Vienna. Oh and his kayak tour sounds amazing! Hopefully I'm in the area one summer to do it.
We were looking forward to our wine tour from the moment we booked it. James' itinerary was perfect. He is a knowledgeable and fun guide. It is obvious he loves the countryside and it's wines. Freigut Thallern and the Anton Luegmayer wineries were great to visit and their wines were all crisp and delightful. Hiking through the countryside was a great break from walking the streets of Vienna which makes James' Venture Vienna tour the perfect addition to a Vienna visit.
Joining our fellow companions and James at Hauptbanhof, we boarded the train to the spa town of Baden and headed towards the vineyard's of the Thermal Region. Exiting the town, we ascended into the woods and after about 30 mins we reached a lookout tower with breathtaking views across the Vienna basin and open countryside - certainly a just reward for the uphill hike. As we descended out of the woods, we were soon walking through the vineyards and towards our first tasting. Sitting amongst the vines, on a beautiful warm and sunny late October day, drinking in the views, oh, and some wine - was perfect. James introduced us to some lovely wines, imparting his great depth of knowledge of the wines, cellar door and the region. Having purchased a couple of bottles, we set off towards the beautiful village of Gumpoldskirchen for a hearty lunch with more wine. Feeling reinvigorated, we headed towards our second tasting at Freigut Thallern, a former 12th century monastery and another excellent selection of wines. We had so much fun and the day felt like meeting up with friends you hadn't seen for a while - conversation flowed and generally, just great company. It was a fantastic introduction to Austrian wines in beautiful surroundings. Having experienced guided wine tours in many different countries, this was probably my favourite, for complete enjoyment. James was a great guide and made sure everyone had a wonderful day.
We had the best experience with James yesterday and we can’t get over how much fun we had. James took us to the thermal region of southwest Austria and we had the most authentic experience. There is no way that we would have ever been able to do this on our own. We started out at a great monastery where the second oldest winery in Austria was located. We got a tour of the site and tasted some amazing wines. Then we took a stroll through vineyards on our way to a great wine village. There we ate an amazing lunch, had more local wines of course, then proceeded to walk through vineyards to our second tasting. This was in the middle of a Vineyard on the side of a hill with the most amazing views. James was very personable and we felt like we had made a real friend after the experience was over. We will definitely use James again the next time we are in Vienna. Wow. Such a great time.
I had a memorable day on this wine tour. The scenery was excellent and really varied (especially from the lookout point which in itself is a very impressive structure). The wine tasting with the other guests was, as you'd expect, very pleasant and civilised (!) and it was fascinating to see how the wine is produced and meet the winemakers. James is a brilliant tour guide - he has an absolute wealth of information on wine-making in this part of Austria, and is really engaging and enthusiastic at the same time. Highly recommended!
We had a great hike in the woods to a look out tower. Then we hiked out of the woods to the vineyards. We wine tasted in the middle of the vineyards. Then walked to the town for lunch and more wine tasting. Very fun
This vineyard walk and tasting mix did fill an exceptional day of our trip in Wien. James professionally and mindfully selected a balanced choice of track and wine spots. Not spending much effort in hiking, but exercise enough and gradually build up our appetite in wine tasting. Weather was nice, warm with plenty of sunshine and breeze, buried in scenic view that could usually be seen far away from highway when passing by. Alongside James as a companion to chat like years old friend and we are regularly inquired about our feeling whether the pace would be comfortable. During the course of hiking, he explained clearly about the places and vineyards we are visiting. That's relaxing, and we are much benefit from his caring throughout the day. About wine tasting, I would say all those would be top notch of Austria. James was a great help, professionally guided us to taste those wines from different angles. Though not anyway good to score technically, for sure we are wine enthusiast and can tell they suit to our taste, that, would be quite difficult to locate in average bar/restaurants elsewhere. The complexity - from aroma to palate and finally after taste, represent heartfelt make of grape planting as well as wine arts in Wien. The vineyard owners were nice and friendly, brought us through their journey of how those good wines were produced - a priceless lesson. Thanks for James to put together all these, wholeheartedly appreciate. Everyone joining the group should feel like within a circle of friends, rather than a programmed tour with standard itinerary or speech. James is quite insistent in smaller group, I fully support this idea as this allows him to put more focus and care on individual's needs. Look forward to go along with James again. ~~Ben & Stella
Went kayaking this morning with a friend. We were with 2 sisters from the UK. Had a fantastic time! We kayaked the whole morning along the river. It was beautiful. A great way to see an alternative side to the city. Loved seeing the locals rowing their boats as well. James was informative and patient. A highly recommended outing.
During a visit to Vienna with friends last summer, we booked a day trip to bicycle through the Wachau Wine Valley and stop at several wineries for tastings. We also stopped at a lovely little village for lunch. From the beginning of the tour, James was helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. He was very good about spending time with everyone on the tour and making everyone feel welcome and included. At each stop, James shared with us his expertise about the wines, the growing and harvesting and winemaking processes, the culture, and the history of the region. He even arranged for us to visit a small, family-owned vineyard that was closed to the public that day, but allowed our small group to come in and have a private tasting, as a personal favor to James. This day was definitely our favorite day in the Vienna area...I can't recommend this highly enough!
We had the happy occasion to be in Vienna and meet James as our tour guide for vineyards outside of Vienna. His kindness, wit and humor made even the most mundane part of the trip, the van ride, full of fun! His knowledge of wine and the countryside makes the day full of fun and adventure. James also helped us get to know the group so you feel as though you are making friends in a very short time. This is a "don't miss" on your trip to Vienna and James is the guide you want!
I went to Vienna with my BF during one of his work trips and decided to go on this wine tour by myself during one of his busy days while we were there and I am SO glad I did! It turned out to be the best day I spent in and around Vienna. The weather was absolutely perfect (this was late October), the vans were clean and nice, the tour was just the right amount of people, and James was an AWESOME tour guide. The small group tour was a perfect distance just outside Vienna to the Wachau Valley which I cannot wait to go back and see more of, it is simply gorgeous. During the wine tour we visited 3 wineries, had a wonderful lunch at one and even had some free time to venture around and do some hiking and wandering the streets in the nearby villages on our own. It was a great balance of group activities and free time to explore on your own. James was extremely knowledgeable about Austrian wines, culture, and facts and was an all around entertaining tour guide who made the entire day enjoyable for all. The wines (mostly all whites) were very enjoyable, easy to drink, and reasonable to purchase. My only complaint was that I didn't buy more wine than I did on the tour! I highly recommend doing this wine tour with your friends and family or even alone as I did. It was fantastic!
A day hike through the Viennese forests and vineyards was taken with the desire to explore the charm and wines of Vienna that can't be found only in museums. On a morning when the weather had been as bad as it had been the previous day, Jason, our tour guide, suggested that we have a wine tasting as we went around Thermen Legion, where we were planning to hike (September 8), because it was the day of the annual wine festival. Jason spoke to me in plain English and, although he's not really good at English, I was completely relaxed in about 30 minutes before I got to Baden, the nearest hiking station. In Baden, we were shown around the house where Beethoven had spent three summers recuperating, and we walked into Beethoven's walkway, hiking a light climb for about 30 minutes. Climb the observation deck built in 2017 and you will feel refreshed as you look out over the border mountains. Jason's navigation took us down another mountain road to the vineyard. Even in the vineyards, they explain the grapes and why they make good wine here. From there, it takes about 30 minutes to get to the wine festival site! Various makers set up booths, some of which had tables in the vineyards, and we headed to the booths we were aiming for where we could really feel like a festival. They tasted two wines each, red and white, including wines of varieties that could only be obtained at Thermen Legion, and they negotiated to buy wine. Lunch is in the town of Heurique. Hoiliké, with its courtyard, has September specials like pumpkin soup and lasagna, all of which are really good, including the classic pork. After a relaxing meal, we were taken to another booth, a tasting, where we got along well with the local customers! We toasted them with their recommended rosé wine and really enjoyed the wine festival. A great tour from Jason, a hiking professional, wine professional, and human communicator. Jason has lived in Malaysia for many years and knows Asia very well, which made the story even more exciting. They say we were the first Japanese hikers. I think it's the perfect tour for wine lovers, hiking to nature without having to go to Salzburg.
