We bought tickets direct online. Best to come at opening time for more space and less crowds. I had expected more amazing crowns and jewels. Those on display were certainly stunning and a show of wealth and opulence. Robes and imperial clothes were also on display.
Superb art museum. Don’t miss the schatzkammer section which features the decorative art pieces that the Hapsburgs collected over the centuries. A breathtaking collection. The imperial treasury (a separate museum in the Hofburg) was a much smaller collection of pieces but features the historic crowns worn by the hapsburgs, ceremonial robes, jewelry, etc. I did not see the coin collection but I’ve heard that is also very good. I would have liked to have lunch at the KHM but there was a long line.
Beautiful. However we got there. It was not a guided tour. We managed to make our way around the building. It was lovely
Impressive Building with a plaza at the front. Ambient excellent, safety and inside you will find many treasures in art and collections.
You have to be bold when you travel. You have to walk up to the counter and say “I think this is a ticket, but if it is only a voucher, may I have a ticket?” It is not that hard. This is a skip the (non-existent) line voucher, not a guided tour. Museum is stunning, amazing, and huge. This is as big as The Met in NYC and bigger than the National Gallery in London. You could spend days here. Masters such as Albrecht Duhrer and Caravaggio are well represented. The true gold here is the Hapsburg dynasty’s vast sculpture collection. Like the Medici family in Italy, this royal family were art patrons of the highest order. Many masterpieces here were commissioned unique works. Some were given and received as gifts. Some were centerpieces at garden party tables. Some are ivory. Some are gold, bronze, silver, wood and wax. All are amazing. A few are unfathomable. And that is just the sculptures, There are ten more huge collections, at least. There are so many treasures here, they have had to add locations and still have to rotate the items. Any special or temporary featured collection or exhibition is a must see because it could be stored for fifty years before it is brought back out. Worth every penny nickel of admission. Audio guide is six euros and worth it. Ignore the “scam” karens. If they would read the thing! Not misleading. It is what it is. An easy way to pre pay at a discount.
We visited at 2.30 pm no line, cost €20 each as senior citizens, free audio guide. You need at least a week here! Beautiful, Egyptian, Roman, 14th centuries onwards. The most awesome gold, bronze, ivory, Chinese art & of course the art work, the items are out of this world, we had just spent the day at Schonbrunn the taxi dropped us at Museum Platz & although tire so glad we visited. Perhaps visit after 14.00? The buildings around as everywhere are so beautiful, about 25 minute walk to AM Parkring Hotel If you decide to pre book ONLY use the official website don’t be fooled & pay too much
There are, like most big cities, so many museums to visit in Vienna. We decided to visit the Imperial Treasury Museum which is based in the Hofburg Palace. We bought our tickets on the door and just for this museum. The Hapsburg jewellery on display consists of many crowns and other amazing pieces, the treasures include what is reputed to be the largest cut Emerald in the world, the horn of the mythical Unicorn and an agate bowl associated with the Holy Grail, as well as beautiful robes. Towards the end of the exhibitions there are also lots of religious artifacts which we decided to pass, as we had already spent 2 hours on the treasures. Overall, the museum is well worth a visit.
Wonderful very nice museum and setting. Has a variety of cultural attractions. The imperial treasury was also very interesting. Yet it could be placed together say with the imperial carriage museum.
This is a stunning building with some amazing art. The cafe provides a lovely experience for lunch and drinks.
We enjoyed our time at the museum. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour much better. We would do it again if we had the same Guide.
A very interesting museum. Fascinating exhibits.
You’re very interesting perspective on the Hapsburg era and the holy Roman empire. The closing is magnificent as our the jewels.
The museum was beautiful. I was just in awe of the grandiose feeling. The staff were very friendly and all the art was mind blowing.
Wow! The jewels, crowns, robes, religious relics are just incredible. Hope they have upped their security after the Louvre! So much history and explained well by the audio guide. As with all these palaces & museums, there are just too many people but they do manage it very well.
Just prepare to spend about 3+ hours in there. And definitely get a matching ticket for the imperial treasury (that one took up about 30 minutes) but what an amazing experience. They also rent out power banks downstairs :). Buy the ticket before just so you can skip the queue it’s so much faster
An amazing museum, very much worth a visit. Get prebooked tickets as queues for tickets were lengthy. Once inside it was quieter than expected as there's plenty of space between display cases etc. Some of the displays had English notices about the contents, but some didn't, so make sure you have Google Translate on your phone. Amazing experience as you walk around, expect to spend either a morning or afternoon looking at everything. Small cafe in the museum with good coffee, cakes and other snacks etc, all for a reasonable price, unlike London museums which charge a fortune. Highly recommended.
We purchased the skip-the-line Kunsthistorisches Museum & Imperial Treasury tickets for $35US. I believe this actually saved us money and more importantly when we arrived it was raining, and we bypassed the long lines in the rain to go straight into the museum. Inside we purchased the audio guides. 6 euro for one person, and 8 euro for 2 adults – for some savings. We ate lunch at the café in the museum. A bit of a wait. Food was good, but not special compared to the many restaurants in central Vienna – but a nice break in the museum tour. The collection is very good. The Imperial Treasury was nice, but not quite a good comparison to the English Crown jewels.
There are several different museums within the Hofburg complex, all of which are close to each other but require separate admissions. This was one of them. It seemed like it might be interesting, and online photos play up the 'crown jewels' type aspects. I bought tickets online. This was not one where you had a timed entry, so it had some flexibility. I don't recall if they required you to check backpacks, as we left ours at the hotel that day due to another associated museum's prohibition on them. My verdict on this was that it was not as interesting as I'd hoped. Their breakdown is roughly: 20% crowns, swords, and jewels. 25% religious items like reliquaries. 50% robes (coronation, etc.). 5% miscellaneous. By far, the most common thing you'll see are robes / clothes. They did have a good audio guide (for a nominal extra charge). But if I'd known exactly what to expect, I don't think I'd have come here. It depends on what you are personally interested in, of course. However, given that most trips have a limited time budget, I think I'd have spent that time at some other museum / attraction instead. We spent about an hour touring the whole place, which was not small.
This is an impressive museum with much to see. Even with a couple of exhibitions closed you can be here for hours viewing the unique art pieces and sculptures. The cafe area is impressive; be prepared for crowds on the upper levels if you want to get a photo. I recommend purchasing the combined ticket to see the imperial treasury, which is in a separate but nearby location. The treasury has grand pieces and can be completed in about half an hour so it can likely fit into itineraries. Just be aware that there is no dedicated exit so you have to walk back through the exhibit's entrance to leave.
I will review only the Imperial Treasury and skip the Art History Museum. A visit to Hofburg wouldn't be complete without going to the Imperial Treasury. On display is a magnificent collection of crowns, scepters, imperial vestments, royal paraphernalia, religious items, and much more. It's a glimpse into the extravagant life of Austrian royalty especially when its members carry out official functions. However, I have some serious doubts as to the authenticity of the relics in the collection (like pieces of Jesus' swaddling clothes and of the table cover used during the Last Supper, etc.) which supposedly serves to demonstrate how pious and devoted the Habsburgs were. At any rate, also on display are vestments and other items used by imperial officials. This is one museum you should never miss when you visit Hofburg!
The Imperial Treasury is full of breathtaking exhibits from both secular and religious history. Highlights include the Holy Lance, the Veil of Veronica, and the world’s largest cut emerald. A fascinating and impressive collection that gives great insight into the power and symbolism of the Habsburg dynasty.
They should carry water and wear comfortable shoes. I was happy to see the cleanliness of the place.
Confusing system. Instructions is unclear about how you get your ticket. Go to the museum and join the queue for “Voucher” or “Group Priority”, do not join the “Ticket” queue which is what we did for an hour only to be told to re-queue. Once you get your tickets, it should be a combi/joint ticket so you can use them at both venues. Eg: if you started at the museum, you can use the same ticket at the imperial treasury and vice versa. It’s not “skip the queue” but it is a shorter line for voucher / group priority.
The lower rating is for the experience with the "ticket" from TripAdvisor. What you have is a voucher that you then need to go and stand in line once you arrive at the outside ticket booths and let them scan it to give you "tickets" that you can actually use to enter the museum. If you try and go straight in to the museum they will tell you this and send you outside to exchange it. No problem....just wish TripAdvisor was more clear when they sent it as this is not hard to explain. The museum itself is pretty impressive and the architecture of the building alone is incredible.
Purchase your tickets in advance to avoid a 10-20min wait. The 7 museum pass for friends and family for 90€ is your best option.
Had an extra day in Vienna and visited the Art history museum. I am always thrilled to see another Vermeer, otherwise it was somewhat of a quick visit through. The Christmas market outside was lovely. The treasury was small but we got to see some amazing things, liked that!
Be sure to look for the ticket hut that says "voucher" , not the regular ticket office. You will still need to stand in line for the voucher, but it's a much shorter line than the regular ticket line.
It's best to buy tickets online. Otherwise you need to buy them outside (in the rain...). Or - there's a ticket machine inside... Note that you must deposit bags at the entrance. The museum itself is large with many great works of art. This isn't the MET in NYC or the Louvre in Paris, but for art lovers (especially on a stormy day...) it's a very nice experience
If you only visit one museum in Vienna make it this one. It reveals how breathtaking the wealth of the Hapsburg Empire was. A couple of hours will pass in a flash!
The Imperial Treasury Vienna contains the treasure collection of the Hofburg dynasty. Some of the unique collection includes a unicorn horn (it is long and doesn’t look like the unicorn horn in the movie), the Imperial Crown and the Holy Lance, agate bowl (the world’s largest cut emerald). Though comparatively speaking, it is less impressive than the other great museums at Vienna.
Spent about an hour here but you could easily spend far more time at this museum if you listened to everything on the audio guide and read all the info provided. It was quite hot inside and only pockets of the museum seemed to have ventilation. Thought this would be a little more like London in terms of Crown Jewels to see, but this included far more clothing/vestments, small carved statues, and relics. Definitely some cool stuff worth seeing (see photos below), and we bought the KHM combo ticket because of all the museums included.
Hard to figure out what was what and where to redeem the ticket, had to go back and forth between museums to sort it out. This was not clear in the booking details. I reached out to the company for support and clarification but got no response or help.
We visited the Imperial Treasury of Vienna, where we saw an impressive collection of crowns, jewellery, robes and other riches. While there are sign boards throughout that explain the various displays, I highly recommend purchasing the audio guide. That way, you can listen to detailed descriptions of the pieces as well as historical information. Also, the Treasury is quite dark and sometimes crowded, which can make it frustrating to try to read the signs, so it's better to listen on the handset. The Treasury is set up as a series of small rooms to explore, but it can be a bit of a maze. Make sure you follow the numbers of the rooms and displays to make sure you don't miss anything. We had to double-back when we realized we missed a room or two.
It was an above average museum for me. There were quite a few Crown Jewels and artefacts in the museum. But generally, it was a little crowded with many people blocking my view trying to take photos. Most of my photos taken turned out to be too dark because of the dim lights.
You’ve been to all the major art museums, this is the one that completes the picture. Two hours is enough for your first visit…fyi we visited a second time within days and learned even more.
So many amazing treasury items and much bigger than I expected. Unfortunately for us there was a fire alarm drill in place and we had to leave just as we’d entered. We had to wait for a while in the square and by the time we got back in we had to do a quick run round before we missed our flight! But what we did see was truly fascinating. Lots of crowns, robes, sceptres and jewellery! Stunning! No photos allowed inside
The gardens are wonderful. We enjoyed the state rooms too and I recommend the palace for a great day out steeped in history
This is an amazing place to visit. It is full of incredible exhibits and covers everything you could want to see. The Tapestries are amazing with a description in German and English so easy to understand. There are numerous paintings by some of the greatest painters. The artefacts range from ivory carvings to jewelled vessels and beyond. There is a lovely cafe in the museum which is very elegant. I do not think you can appreciate this in a single day - you need to spend sometime looking and then go back as there is simply so much to see. The actual building is stunning with painted ceilings and amazing marble columns. It is worth a visit what ever your age.
When we arrived at the KMVIT in Vienna, the museum personnel could not scan the printed tickets we bought through Viator or the downloaded tickets on the Apple Wallet. We had to buy new tickets. The museum personnel refused to accept our Viator tickets and said they did not know the operator and that we bought invalid tickets. We had very little time at our disposal and bought new tickets. Trying to enter and purchase new tickets took about 30 minutes, and we had to leave for Budapest; we missed the train and had to take a private car to Budapest at great expense. We had no problems with any other Viator tickets; it was only this one experience that had a problem.
We purchased the combination tickets that allowed us to visit both the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Imperial Treasury, since separate tickets to the two museums would cost more. The Imperial Treasury collection is like the Crown Jewels collection in London. You see the riches that the European powers gained from around the world, but you don’t learn much about the wars that expansion brought. In the case of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, though, a lot of the power and wealth was gathered through marriages with other imperial powers.
Great!!! Magic! So much to see. An absolute must for art lovers. Calm atmosphère, decor impressive. The café serves excellent drinks and cakes
Tour was pleasant, informative, educational and leisurely. The guide was very friendly, cordual, historically informative and offered suggestions of additional sights and restaurants to experience. Worth the price inorder to gain insight about the sights.
Never got the information on time. I walked around the place, asked, went to my email. Nothing. What a waste of my time and money!
The museum was fantastic and held such wondrous works of art, many of which we had seen in pictures, such as works by Ruebens, Carvaggio and Monet—seeing them in person was incredible. There was so much more to see. We also had lunch in the dining area and it was lovely. A great way to spend a few hours.
Absolutely superb. As with most visitors I have been lucky enough to visit many museums, but the items on display here put all others to shame. It was fascinating to learn just how closely the royal families of Europe were/are related. The jewels and crowns were seriously impressive, and the coronation robes were just beautiful. King Charles III could have picked up a few tips from them. I could have spent a whole day admiring the ecclesiastical robes in the final rooms - I have never seen such sewing, such attention to detail... just amazing!
There was a lot to see although most was not Austrian but it was interesting none the less. We enjoyed our visit and all the interesting pieces that we saw.
one of the worlds great ciries compact with friendly helpful people spent 5 days walking and seeing so much more to see and do but enough for this trip will be back soon
the guided tour was a great idea. we learned a lot from a tour guide who was great. Very knowledgeable, great sense of humor and very pleasant personality. Thank you
I cannot recommend this museum enough. Stunning collection of Habsburg Imperial regalia, crowns, septres, rings, mantles, the cradle of Napoleon's son which is a throne for a baby. It gives you a very strong sense of the immense power of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, The Crown fo the Holy Roman Emperor. The Crown of the King of Translyania. You are looking at over a thousand years of Central European history. It's superb and absolutely worth visiting.
