Tour was basically going to outside of landmarks and having guide talk about history sharing a handful of pictures. I would have preferred going to actual Jewish area and seeing how they live and where they shop. I felt much of the info from guide could have been learned walking around city on our own or using QR codes at landmarks. We walked over 4 miles. For cost of this trip it was not what I expected. I would advise researching other tours before booking.

Itinerary
Outside the beautiful doors of the Jewish City Temple, we consider the how the Viennese Jewish Community had to keep their synagogues barely visible from the street despite their influential role in their city's development over centuries. Few European cities have been so closely intertwined with Jewish history as Vienna. Outside this important temple, we learn of Jewish life and increasing settlement in Vienna from the Middle Ages, despite dramatic expulsions. We don't visit the interior but we recommend that you contact the synagogue to arrange a tour with their own guides, open April to October, Monday to Thursday. If you take the 11:30 AM Monday synagogue tour and then enjoy your lunch, you are in the perfect place to begin our 2:00 PM tour of Jewish Vienna. If you take the 2:00 PM synagogue tour on Tuesday and Thursdays, it will fit well after our 9:30 AM Tuesday and Thursday tour with a lunch break.
We consider the influence of Vienna's modern Jewish community on every aspect of the city's cultural life from outside the Nestroyhof Theater with its stunning Art Nouveau exterior, once home to Yiddish-speaking ensembles.
Winding through Vienna's second district, to visit the memorial site of the destroyed Leopoldstädter Temple. Today, it is symbolized by four imposing white columns reaching up into the sky.
Learn of the victims and survivors of Nazi genocide and the phenomenon of antisemitism in Europe while visiting the destroyed synagogues of both Ashkenazi and Sephardic congregations and the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial.

Guide brought us to Jewish related landmarks and spoke and showed pictures which we could have seen on our own or by using QR codes at landmarks. Did not go to Jewish actual section which would have been of interest to us. Lots of history from the 1800’s. I would have appreciated more from 1900 and up. Over five miles of walking.
The guide was extremely knowledgable, however there was too much standing around. Guide should find benches for her very long but informative speeches. Very disappointed that the main appeal of the tour was the synagogue, which was closed to tours. The professional guide should have been able to take us in.
Our guide was terrific. Knowledgeable, sweet and willing to answer all my questions. A pleasure to spend time with.
Annelie was an excellent tour guide who came prepared with many documents and photos to share as she educated us about the history of Jewish life in Vienna and Austria over many periods in history. She also personalized the discussion based on our own experiences as well. Highly recommend this tour.
Peter, our guide was exceptional and gave us a wonderful tour with lots of background information and history. Thank you and most appreciated.
Our guide Annanelli was excellent. Easy to understand and gave us much insight. Loved that she included things about how things related to her.
This was a fabulous 2.5 hr tour! Annalie, our guide was excellent! She was knowledgeable about the history of Jewish communities through the ages as well as cultural info you wouldnt find in history books. She was able to answer all of our questions and due to her varied background had personal knowledge and experiences to share. Her English was excellent making listening to her easy. This was a private tour for 4 of us and initially we thought it was very expensive. However, at the end of the tour we all agreed it was worth it. Additionally, this was not just a recitation of all the traumas, though this was discussed in a straightforward manner, but also of all of the contributions Viennese Jewish citizens made to Austria and the world. It was a refreshing and interesting take on a Jewish walking tour. I highly recommend it.
Our tour leader was knowledgeable and informative. She told lots of stories and showed us all around Vienna taking us back in time and into the present. Her pictures and stories brought the landscape to life.
Fabulous encyclopedic tour of Judaism and Jewish history (and some interesting architectural touring too) a fabulously informed and plannned tour.
Barbara took us on a very informative and interesting tour. We learned how the experiences of Jews were integrated into the history of Vienna in both good and bad times. Highly recommended.
The tour was informative and moving and coincidently took place on October 7th, 2025. My daughter and I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in Jewish history.
Long gave us a wonderful tour. She was very prepared with maps and photos. She answered every question and put the history in context. Her complete explanation of the various stages of the history was interesting
Jan was an amazing guide!!! He is very knowledgeable and friendly. We learned a lot about Vienna and its Jewish history.
We had the pleasure of touring "Jewish Vienna" with guide Annelie on 8/21/2025. Unfortunately, an accident on a major roadway held up traffic and prevented Annelie from meeting us on time. However, she called us, kept us informed and went out of her way to "make it up" for us. Annelie was everything you would want a tour guide to be, engaging and well informed on the subject matter. In addition to pointing out and explaining key sites she augmented her talk by showing us pictures in a binder of what key sites and people looked like in the past. The tour was small - my husband and I and two others, and Annelie checked in with all of us periodically to ensure she was addressing our interests and answering our questions. She also answered questions about some sites we were looking to find/experience after the tour. Thank you Annelie and Viator for helping us to experience Jewish Vienna.
Peter was excellent! He shared the history with interesting information, both historical and personal. He is very personable and is a very good storyteller. He also gave good restaurant suggestions, which we appreciated. We would highly recommend Peter and this tour.
Don’t hesitate to do this illuminating tour about the history and character of what was the now long gone Vienna of the Jewish community
Sober but great tour. Our guide was patient and explained all the details we were asking about. We felt her approach was fresh and something very different and new. Everyone should visit Jewish quarters and hire professionals who know the subject well.
Very informative guide. Helped us to understand the history of the region and its people. Pointed out many details we wouldn’t have understood or noticed or given reverence to without her.
Very interesting and informative tour of old Jewish Vienna. Was very helpful to understand the context of successful and assimilated Vienna Jews not believing their lives were at risk.
An interesting and informative trip through the Jewish past and the Jewish present in Vienna. Our tour guide, Webke, clearly knew her history well and was a fine teacher. Her explanations were.easy to understand and the pace of the tour was well timed.
This tour takes about two hours. The guide has lots of info. It was time well spent It would have been helpful if the meeting place was better described or more accessible
Jan was an excellent guide! Learned so much about Vienna and the Jewish heritage. Extremely knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Highly recommend!
Annellie proved to be an excellent guide through the historic Jewish quarters of Vienna. We appreciated her mix of stories - rather than bombarding us with all the horrors (so many) she mixed it up with insights of the prominent Jewish men and women of the 19th - 20th centuries. We also were able to work in a bit of insights around the movie "The Third Man". Her recommendation for a meal in Leopolstadt was spot on with Cafe Ansari. Well worth our time and the tour fee.
Annelie was extremely knowledgeable and presented things in a clear way that held our attention. She went out of her way to help us additionally with navigating the city and restaurant recommendations
We were very lucky to have a guide all to ourselves for the tour and a exceptionally knowledgeable guide at that. We walked through many small streets and visited special places, such a good way to start our visit. A personal touch was I think especially good, guide had lots of family connections to the Jewish story and was a Vienesse resident, lots and lots of history developing into a full package.
Peter, our tour guide is very nice, very knowledgeable, very passion about the tour and the Jewish history of Vienna. It is a very nice and informative walking tour. Highly recommended if you are interested in Jewish history. Good job Peter!!!!
This was an exceptional tour and Jan was absolutely wonderful. I've been on tours all over the world and Jan was the best tour guide I ever had. He is kind, warm, exceptionally knowledgeable and beyond his wonderful personality and knowledge, his ability to tell stories and explain history in a compelling and engaging manner enables exceptional retention. We learned a great deal and had an amazing time. We will be telling all our friends to seek out Jan and WeGuideVienna for their tours. Thanks Jan! You are awesome!
Our guide Peter was amazing. Knowledgeable, passionate, energetic, and fluent in art, politics, history and all things Vienna and Jewish. He was flexible and willing to create an incredible experience for us. We would highly recommend him to others looking for all the above and a wonderful guide and human being
Jan is an excellent tour guide. He’s very knowledgeable about the history of the Jewish community in Vienna and weaves it into the general history of the city. Highly recommended.
Jan is excellent tour guide with the deep knowledge of the theme and absolutely friendly attitude! It was a new perspective on Vienna and Austria history! Thank you Jan!
Guide was great and used stories and anecdotes to bring this history of Jews in Vienna to light. Highly entertaining and informative.
Jan was very engaging and gave a good overview of the history of Vienna and the Jewish perspective. The walking route was very manageable.
Annellie was a terrific guide who used stories and her knowledge of Jewish Vienna to make it alive for us. Very impressed.
Our guide Annalee was outstanding. Super knowledgeable and flexible as to what we we’re interested in.
Annalise was very knowledgeable about Jewish history in Vienna. She portrays the long story of Jews in Vienna, both good and bad. She was fun for adults, and helpful finding a good restaurant for after our tour. Definitely recommend her tour.
The guide was awesome had so much knowledge and information to to share. It was not what we expected, because she shared more about the Jewish people and their way of life through history. The tour guide was the best we have ever had. Thank you, Annelie!
Although we were expecting a small group, we were the only couple on the tour with Annilie. She met us in front of the.Stattemple. And for 3 1/2 hours she took us through Jewish Vienna an an excellent and comprehensive tour. She provided us with the history and the current situation as well. As a history of the persecution the Jews faced from medieval times, and through the holocaust. As well as life for the Jews in Vienna now. We took the underground to the theater district and ended the tour at a beautiful coffee house. She was an excellent guide, and we would highly recommend taking this tour.
We had a wonderful time with our tour guide Annelie. We were panic when realizing that our tour was in the morning vs the afternoon, she adapted us to pick us up at a tube station near us, which gave us such as smooth flow into the tour with her. She took us to several places no other tour guide will even have any idea where they are. She is professional and kind, very knowledgeable and detailed. This trip opened doors for our future detailed tours we would like to have such as the film industry of Vienna.
Our guide, Annelie, was friendly and welcoming, and very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject - we really enjoyed the tour. At the start of the tour, she outlined her proposed itinerary and checked with us to make sure it fit with our interests. She focused on both medieval history and 20th century times, and highlighted the contributions of many members of the Jewish community to improving life in Vienna and beyond. She showed us several places that did not seem accessible to the general public, and made the tour even more interesting with stories and additional pictures and small video clips. The time flew by and we enjoyed visiting several different areas of the city (traveling by public transit). I would definitely recommend Annelie as a guide for this tour or other historical tours of Vienna.
Our guide Was exceptionally well versed in the history of the Jewish community throughout its stay in Vienna. A real wealth of knowledge.
My husband and I enjoyed our tour with Annelie very much. We were a few minutes late because of the metro unexpectedly stopping however Annelie called us on our cell phone and kindly assured us that she would wait for us. She is very knowledgeable and pleasant and accommodating. we learned many things about the early Jewish community and wonderful stories about many outstanding citizens… it was refreshing to learn these background stories of real lives and events that took place long before World War II. our walk took us places that we would not normally even know about without Annelie guiding us (we did not go in museums but you can always go back later if you want to on your own, which we did, One ticket will get you into both) Also, I needed to run into a drugstore to buy a mask (which is important to wear on the metro) and Annelie had a story about the building I went into and the family that it housed back in the day… we could never know any of these things on our own so I highly recommend this tour. Annelie also recommended a wonderful place for lunch which we enjoyed very much. PS Thank you Annelie for everything… It was a pleasure getting to meet you and spending our morning with you and having you open up a new adventure for us!
Annelie Pichler was a wonderful guide! The tour covered a broad history of the Jewish community in Vienna, and Annelie brought every moment alive with her narration and her visuals. She gave us the benefit of her wide range of knowledge and understanding of Viennese Jewish life through the ages.
My wife and I would both like to say that out time with Amelie was wonderful. Not only did we learn about the Jewish history of Vienna , but also about how the city itself owed a great debt to the Jews as the city grew and developed, prewar Austria, post war Austria and modern English Vienna. At my request she graciously modified her program to explain in great detail past and current politics, ongoing incidents against Jews , and we visited first hand several buildings and apartments of historical significance’ that were also showed us in very old actual photos . One highlight were videos produced about the historical nature of the actual buildings we were walking through. Overall an incredible experience that brought Jewish history to life. She has an incredible depth of knowledge and our time with her will not be forgotten.
My wife and I took the "Jewish Vienna" tour on Thursday 15th July 2021. Our tour guide, Annelie Pichler, was nothing short of fantastic. Her knowledge of Vienna is vast, well researched and thorough. Her passion for this great city comes out in every story, anecdote and historic fact she told us. She also has an uncanny talent for honing in on elements of special interest to her clients. I am particularly interested in film music and she intuitively incorporated this into the tour. Overall the experience was wonderful and my wife was extremely pleased to have received such a thoughtful birthday present.
We want to thank Wolfgang for a tour that was as moving as it was informative. It is easy to see that he is passionate about helping travelers grasp this history. While it is not easy to learn about the Holocaust in Vienna at the different memorials, it felt important. This tour also gave us a profound sense how large a role the Jewish community played in Vienna before WWII.
We first learned about this park on a Rick Steves show in Budapest and it did not disappoint. We took the tour with the tour guide and it was well worth the time and money. This is a great opportunity to learn about an important part of Hungary's history that should not be forgotten so it never happens again. We took the optional guided tour in the park with a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide. We had our hotel book it on line including transportation the day before for a discounted rate. I highly recommend doing it this way. Make sure to leave at least 20 minutes at the end to go in the small museum further explaining what you saw in the park. I only had about 10 minutes which was not long enough to fully enjoy the displays. In my opinion this excursion should be at the top of your list of things to do in Budapest.
