Sovereign hill was a great experience, going back in time to get a brief glimpse of what life was like back in the gold rush times. The demonstration on making a wagon wheel was amazing, as was the re-enactment from the soldiers in the square. All appeared very authentic.

Sovereign Hill is a living museum that presents the story of Ballarat during the gold rush era. Purchase your general admission tickets to Sovereign Hill online here to step back in time and wander the streets and laneways that represent an era gone by. Back in 1851 when Gold was first discovered here, a 'gold rush' was triggered and Ballarat suddenly grew from a tranquil pastoral town to a provincial city attracting dreamers searching for a piece of gold. Sovereign Hill's Outdoor Museum covers 15 hectares of a former gold mining site bringing this historic time period to life through a living township. With over 18 scheduled activities taking place throughout the day, you can find yourself panning for real gold, witnessing musket firing, and seeing boiled lollies, wheels, and candles being made right in front of your eyes. Sovereign Hill is a great family friendly activity for all ages and no doubt you'll walk away with a better sense of Australian history and life in the 1800's.

Our family of 10 booked a photo session and absolutely loved it. So much fun. The costumes were so easy to put on and the staff were so experienced and helpful Highly recommend this.
Have visited Sovereign Hill several times over many years. Last visit was with young grandchildren 3 years ago so really wasn't focussed on what I was seeing. The visit prior to that was almost 20 years ago. What I can say is that not much has changed in those 18 years. There seemed to be fewer costumed staff wandering doing presentations, more rooms set up as classrooms. There were lots of school groups wandering around and not many of the general public (although it must be added that it was a cold day). Aura is a fantastic sound-and-light which costs extra, far advanced from the old Blood on the Cross after dark show.
Really enjoyed our day out. The price is a little on the expensive end, however you probably get bang for your buck. Their is people dressed in era clothing constantly around engaging with the crowd. There is something to see every half an hour and guided tours. The souvenir shop was quite good as well
The staff are friendly and the experience is amazing for everybody. The atmosphere felt like you are walking into the 1850s with staff dressed up. There’s a few bakeries and restaurants to go around sovereign hill.
Terrible customer service. We pre booked a ticket and were not able to attend as our little man became unwell. Emailed their customer service. Would not offer a change of dates or a refund. $150+ for admission. Awful policy, and a customer service team with a lack of empathy.
Sovereign Hill doesnt seem to have the same experience that I remember from past trips. No longer do they have the role-play shoot-out down the main street with horses etc. Its been replaced with a simple 3 gun salute from the balcony of the Hotel- pretty boring. The school has been closed off. You used to be able to sit at the desks and get told off by the teacher played by one of their staff. The whole place seemed to be lacking something and it was pretty boring I felt. Most of their staff seemed to want to be somewhere else! Makes me wonder if they're cost cutting? I'm sure first timers still would find it interesting but no more for me-thats the last trip.
It was a fun day out, with lots of things to see and experience, especially for the kids. But you need to be prepared to pay for all of the additional add on activities. A bit of walking along uneven terrain and steps up and down. Many of the staff came across like they really did not want to be there, a bit surprising considering this is such a popular tourist attraction.
Amazing place to explore the history, you can learn a lot on that visit. We spent the whole day. Gold mining experience was unforgettable. Highly recommended place, specially if you have kids.
The complex in the day has lots of activities happening. The streets are dirt, and lots of up and down and stairs, and steps. Definitely not flat. And I didn’t see much in the way of facilities for people who had disabilities. So it’s not really a place to go if you not able to cope with the terrain. So be prepared to walk. It is built with buildings of the era it is representing. There are lots of buildings, and houses, mines, and church, a bakery and a tea room, lolly shop, hotels, a creek where you can pan for gold, ( full of school kids) . There are people dressed appropriate, playing their part like they live there. We watched wooden wheel making, and there was candle making, a whole program of stuff. However the day we went school groups were everywhere. Couldn’t go to some of the popular places, especially the lolly shop, as kids everywhere and these days kids take over. Not sure where the supervisors were! Probably gave up! There is even school group accommodation. So many are staying there. So I understand this would be a big income spinner for the place but it spoilt a lot of activities for the public. The bakery was ok, same with the tea room. There is a new look cafe area, I thought spoilt the whole vibe of the place! Why build something like that? The nighttime show was spoilt by the Big bang theory and Aboriginal dream time that took so so long to get through. It was first. This could have been scrapped! Not what we went to see. Oh and the 2 bus loads of school kids at 8 pm show, who were noisy, and took a bit of controlling and really made us wondered why we bothered to go. We had to sit through the teachers giving them the behave speech more than once! We were not told that we would be part of a school tour. The final presentation of the story of Ballarat and the gold rush was excellent. This was what we wanted to see. This was all they needed to present. It was so well done, and had the element of surprise. Sovereign Hill day and night worth going to, but has some big draw backs.
The guide for the Mines adventure was condescending and downright rude to us, Asians. Great place to visit but just this sad experience. Won't be going anytime soon although they offered free tickets as a kind gesture for this.
Popular activity for grade school students. They do have a cafe and several other eating options. Also present, shops to buy items from jewellery to gloves.
Great day for family activity incl gold panning coach ride , school and theatre magic show and troopers fun salute
Never buy ticket via Keeta ! I purchased three tickets for the Sovereign Hill Gold Mine at 8:30 local time. The product details clearly stated in black and white that tickets would be issued within 1 hour. Keeta seriously breached the contract!! I arrived at the scenic spot at 10:00 local time. More than one and a half hours had already passed, but the scenic spot's system couldn't find my order at all!! The scenic spot refused to issue the tickets! until 3:29 pm local time that I finally received the email from Keeta with the admission voucher. That's a delay of nearly 7 hours! This caused me significant losses: I wasted half an hour communicating for nothing, and I have no choice but immediately repurchase the tickets on the spot (at 10:24 local time) at my own expense. I want to let the park know this case as well.
I wasn’t expecting to like this place as much as I did. So much so we stayed for most of the day. Try and get there as it opens to make most of the activities. All the staff are in character and full of information with no question being too silly so don’t be shy. I particularly loved Polly and some of the goldfield families. We loved the Wizard Jacobs Magic Show which was like seeing a pantomime. There is so much to see and do. There is a free self guided mine tour which is worth doing and the coach ride was fun but you have to pay for this. There is a bar on site and a couple of venues to eat if you get hungry. Is it tacky, yes, but it is so much fun and I can highly recommend it.
Relocated and rebuilt 1850's gold mine town experience. We did just about everything there was to do and it occupied us for just over 4 hours. One self guided mine tunnel is included, another guided one was extra cost. The 'panning for gold' in a gravely stream may keep children occupied for a few minutes, but is a nonsense really. Special mention for most rubbery scone I have every had as part of a Devonshire tea in one of the cafés. Overall, more for children than adults, but an inoffensive half day visit.
Thought that this might be a good morning out. Wrong! It is a brilliant day out. All of us are way past pensionable age and many of the things here reminded us of our youth. This is very much a living museum and its staff all dressed in period costume, are brilliant at telling how things were in the 1800s. There is a whole reconstructed town of original buildings complete with period costumes. Watch gold being melted down and turned into an ingot. Go panning for gold in the river; just loved watching children panning for gold with the help and guidance of a brilliant on site teacher. Most children left with some tiny specks of gold that they had paned for themselves. You feel very welcome here; there is both good coffee and food on site and nothing not to like. Do wear good shoes the streets are as in the 1880s.
Waited 30 minutes to get in with prepaid tickets. Quicker to buy tickets when you get there. Honestly it was taking 5 minutes per family to process them. The lady that was organising the queues and telling everyone it won't be long (not exactly truthful!) eventually begged them to open another booth and we got through. We had prepaid and it took 20 seconds to scan the code and get us in. I still do not know why these other people were taking so long. The queue was out the door and down the stairs. A very frustrating experience and I would have thought an easy thing to fix.
Recommend buying tickets in advance, as there was long queues for those purchasing on the day. Overall great theme park to visit and can be covered in 2 hours, the actors certainly makes the attraction more enjoyable. There are gold related experiences such as the gold pour, gold panning and red hill mine tour which don't require additional costs. My favorite experience was the Gold Pour demonstration. The negatives would be that most buildings are kept to original standards so most places are extremely hot inside as-well, so its probably better to come in spring or winter. Certainly worth a visit even if your not into mining history.
Sovereign Hill is an absolutely outstanding experience and a true Australian treasure. From the moment you step through the gates, you’re transported back in time to the gold rush era, with incredible attention to detail, immersive storytelling, and passionate staff who truly bring history to life. The authenticity of the buildings, costumes, demonstrations, and experiences is exceptional. Whether it’s panning for gold, watching traditional trades in action, exploring underground mines, or simply walking the streets and taking in the atmosphere, there is something engaging for all ages. The staff deserve special mention — friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic, they elevate the entire experience. It’s not just educational, it’s fun. Perfect for families, history lovers, school groups, or anyone wanting a uniquely Australian experience. You can easily spend a full day here and still feel like there’s more to explore. Sovereign Hill is world-class, thoughtfully curated, and incredibly well run. A must-visit destination that leaves you with a deeper appreciation of Australia’s history and the people who shaped it. Highly recommend.
There are several demonstrations, activities and events that help to explain how life was in an old mining town. It’s quite hilly so be prepared for the walk. It’s an interesting and educational place and it’s worth a visit.
I remember going to Sovereign Hill multiple times as a kid which is about an hour drive from Melbourne, in 1851, there were large discoveries of gold in Bathurst, New South Wales then soon in Bendigo, Victoria and Ballarat. When news came to the world, people worldwide began, people from Britian, Ireland, China, Germany, France, and other European countries up to 300,000 people came to Australia starting the Australian Gold Rush. I remember there being underground tours explaining some popular stories in the Gold Rush like 2 brothers digging for gold at night and the mines suddenly tumbled, how one died and one escaped, the main street in Sovereign Hills are 19th century houses with people dressed in old western clothing making you feel like you in the 1850's. Overall, if your visiting Ballarat, I highly recommend visiting this place, prices are budget friendly whilst the staff members are really nice, my most cherished memory was going into the underground mines by the diagonal mine cart.
Don't bother. Entry price doesn't cover all attractions which is silly. The entry price if $53 should cover everything.
We loved the storytelling and the sense of place on this underground tour—the guides were engaging, and the historical detail was excellent. It felt authentic and immersive without being gimmicky. However, there’s an abrupt blackout as part of the experience that really startled our child and took some of the shine off the visit. A small suggestion: offer clearer, consistent warnings about the sudden darkness at booking, at the ticket counter, and again in the pre-tour briefing, with a simple “family/sensory notice.” A short preview clip at the entrance and a clearly signed step-free or “skip this segment” option would help parents and sensitive visitors make informed choices. Staff did check in afterwards, which we appreciated. Overall, still a fascinating tour and we’d recommend it—just be aware of the blackout moment if you’re visiting with young kids or anyone sensitive to sudden changes in light.
I wanted to write a rewrite after reading some of the bad reviews, l think people don’t understand the acting of the staff that work there, they are mistaking rudeness for people acting in character of how people were back then, it is a historical park NOT A TACKY THEME PARK, things are authentic and genuine for the time, I had an absolutely brilliant time loved going on the tours underground and thought my tour guide. Darren was fantastic. His knowledge of history and telling stories was brilliant. The candlemaking, hard boiled lollies and gold pouring demonstrations for brilliant. I think some people have ridiculous expectations and just love giving one star but I had an amazing time and will definitely going to be back again soon.
Authentic buildings and live presentations throughout my four hours there. Easy to move around even though school groups queued at some shops (boiled lollies?) However strong winds blew a lot of dust up the Main Street - maybe this could have been lessened with a water cart to tone down the dust. Staff in costumes acted and presented very well with excellent voice projection. Highlights were the underground mine and the tea shop.
We went to the Wonderlights experience and we loved it. We went around 11am and I think we would actually need to go earlier as we ran out of time to complete everything. I am very impressed with the size of the place and the shows and activities on offer. One thing to be aware of even though the place is open later for the lights the most of the attractions actually close - which we did not know so we ran out of time to complete items. The lights were great, they had fake snow, music and lights everywhere. It was freezing, joyful and I would love to go back. There was no option for 2 days entry like normal which I would of loved the opportunity to buy as we ran out of time. (Maybe an option for next year fingers crossed). I would really recommend the lights and the overall attraction even on a normal day. We really enjoyed it and will be back to complete our tour.
I took my son to see the winter wonderlights. We had a great time. We made candles, bought toffee apples and went on the mine tour during the day. We decided to come back after dark for the lights. The atmosphere was magical and festive. Would recommend.
Ballarat is a great place to visit, as was Sovereign Hills and its outdoor museum. The 1800's time sets bring you back to a rich time of Australian Gold Rush history! This is my 2nd time after 9 years, and it still excites me, this time with my family. One thing I would like to highlight is the rather disrespectful, maybe even rude, Goldmine Mine ride guide's response to questions who shouted back with a curt answer. Despite giving specifics in an email to the Museum, they did not seem to think it deserved a response as well. Other than this hiccup, I would still visit this place again when I visit this lovely and delightful country.
What a fantastic recreation of the early gold rush period. The mine tours were fascinating and the paid tour was well worth the price. We didn’t partake in the gold panning as we have done this before, elsewhere, however a lot of people seemed to find it enjoyable. The food was delicious - we had the pastie and the Devonshire scones. A little expensive but that’s what you pay in these sort of places. The actors were really nice and would answer any questions you had. Overall, worth the admission price if you are interested in history.
We had an absolute blast at Sovereign Hill. The effort that has gone into the presentation and activities is unmatched. We especially loved the gold pouring, wheel making and self guided mine tour. Learned a ton and really enjoyed ourselves - highly recommend!
Sovereign Hill is a must place to visit when you are in Ballarat. I purchased all our tickets online and it was very easy to do so. It is a fantastic recreation of the gold rush era of the 1800's. We were made to feel very welcome when we walked in the door, the staff were all so very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We strolled the streets and saw authentic architecture and staff dressed in period clothing of the time. The Labyrinth mine tour was great and very informative. The 10-year-old boy we had with us enjoyed the Wheelwright workshop where he was able to put together the Pull Apart Wheel. We enjoyed the candle dipping, bowling and gold panning amongst other activities. Lunch at the New York Bakery was reasonably priced, delicious, hot and came out in good time even though they were very busy, owing to school holidays and a lot of families visiting on the day. You will need good walking shoes as there is a lot of walking and it's on dirt streets. This place is perfect for adults and children to visit.
After purchasing tickets, we entered into the premises of the Sovereign Hill, where the gold rush during the mid 19th century is recreated. Near the entrance, we saw people panning in a water stream with a hope to find gold from the sediments. We got a glimpse of the miners dwelling places, while strolling around the Chinese camp. Being a warm and sunny day, it was tiring to walk uphill although a horse carriage was plying once a while. We witnessed a live demonstration of gold smelting and later a Redcoat soldiers parade in front of the Victoria theatre. There were bakery, bar serving drinks, and gift shops. One can spend a day for this historical event recreated in the 20th Century.
We pre paid ticks was easy to purchase and print or use on the phone lady at the ticket office was very nice the promblem was the bad weather was bad that no one can control was early only few when we arrived all the was very nice and very polite ti us i did a couple of underground guided tours that were extra the gentleman were y booked underground tour was very nice and polite explained time and were i need to be for tour 1st tour i was the only onethe other person did not turn up the wonderful lady tour guide was great and e explained all about the mine and second tour was full same tour guide different tour it was great to see what it was like in the era and the food was great and filling and the musket fireing was great and was extremely explained as a trooper in the era
We enjoyed our visit. Was not overly busy. The daytime shows were really good and informative, giving my kids a great perspective on life in the 1800s. The leather keyring making was ok but a bit overpriced. The upgraded mine tour and panning should have been included in the price, so we chose not to do it.
Great five hours spent there. Did the self guided mine tour which was very good and paid guided mine tour which was excellent. A lot to see and so much info. Amazing place. Every one should go see this at least once. Staff are friendly. The cafeteria was clean, cheap and reasonable food. Great value for money for $49 pp.
Great trip. Went also to see a bit of jousting at Kryal Castle on the way there. Made candles, ate boiled lollies and even bought a frying pan. Stayed nearby and took in the evening Aura Sound and Light Show. My daughter and I had a great time. Expensive though.
THIS WAS WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! I think it was well worth the money, there were some transport delays getting here from melbourne so was there less time than I hoped, I could have easily stayed a lot longer there is so much to do!!! Panning for gold, going down a real disused mine, horse and carriage, soldier re-enactments, really nice food, watching confectionary and wheels being made, blacksmiths and a bunch of other stuff I didn't have time to do - absolutely loved it.
Sovereign Hill was very interesting and enjoyable, my view was that it was a little expensive but still it is a must do when visiting Ballarat. My rating was not 5 because when we went there there were school groups everywhere and they had preference and filled the various presentations given. That’s ok but it would have been nice if they could accommodate people who have come from far and wide. Not sure how to fix the issue other than avoiding times when multiple school groups attend.
Put on your walking shoes and get ready for a full day out. Sovereign Hill is timeless. I have visited as a child, a parent, and now as an elderly couple, but it never ceases to disappoint. My husband and I were entertained by the different shows and enjoyed walking around the 1850s Gold town. Our lunch was delicious in the New York bakery. A very enjoyable day.
Being a big review reader before I go somewhere that i intend to travel, I read some of the reviews that were posted because I always find them so helpful making travel plans. I read a lot of people saying it was too expensive to get in and also doing activities once inside, I myself didn’t think that was the case. Besides the entry fee It was only $8 extra each to do the 45 minute underground mine tour, something we enjoyed doing for such a small fee. There are a lot to see for the entry fee and a few things are extra if you want to do them. The old style building and staff in costume was a bit of fun and something different to experience. We had morning tea and it was nice and also a fair price. I brought a really cool large hand made candle and also some hand made boiled lollies that we watched them make. This is a look back in time of our great country. Only thing I missed was the night light show as we drove 2 hours to see Sovereign Hill and didn’t want to do the drive back to Echuca in the dark. It look excellent so we were sorry we didn’t get it. We were in Vic for a week on holidays and had lots to see. It was worth the drive over.
Our experience with our young family was incredibly disappointing, and we regret spending over $157 on entry tickets alone, feeling it was a waste of our hard-earned money. Very little can be done without paying extra money for tours, a 2-minute horse carriage ride costs extra, and they charge for a selfie camera photo. Unfortunately, it failed to meet expectations and won't be something we'll return to, which is a shame.
I found this place to be extremely expensive at a cost of $207 for 2 adults and 2 children both under 10years old. Then once inside very average sites and the horse wagon ride of about 4 minutes at $19 was a rip off. Maybe the driver and assistant could have given a short commentary about the place or at least the horses I must say all the staff were very friendly though. This is my second visit and the first was much better Wont recommend to anyone and wont be going back.
We had a blast, we learned a lot, went down in the mine, lots of fun! we watched how the old wagon wheels were made, it was very interesting.
All family members have lots of fun. Gold made people rich and Melbourne big. It is the first multiculture historic site in Australia
We paid nearly$ 100.00 dollars to get in for a couple! It's a very expensive day so take your money! We had four adults and two children and it's a busy day! There's lots to see which is great! Shops to go in lovely staff there and music which is great! You pay for a lot as you go though like your down gold mine! Lollies at shop and wanted posters but some things you don't ! Beautiful pies at pie shop but they ran out so over to kiosk which has great variety! Lovely staff but if your worried with covoid there forget it ! It needed tables cleaned badly there! I complained about toilets they were filthy! Lady told me won't be cleaned till 2.30 pm ! For the men to complain how bad they were they were terrible! Please it's a big place making good money and windows needed good clean up there so I don't understand how you can leave it like this!
Went with my 3 year old son. The staff were consistently accommodating and lovely. And when they weren’t, they were even nicer. They engaged my son and looked after him. It mare a nice experience a great one. Thoroughly recommend.
Brilliant day out !! Lots of walking so bring good shoes as it is on dirt. ( it is 1850). All the shopkeepers, presenters and shows were OUTSTANDING!! This is the best way to get the most out of the day - Go to every “show” you can - the pantomime is a must!! We listened to the digging talk and building Ballarat - (not sure of the name) the lad who was from Yorkshire - was hilarious, informative and generous of his time. Everyone was informative. Some shows crossed over by 10 min, so that was hard, but understandable. If you asked questions they enthusiastically responded in Character. We went mid week, it was a nice day- took our own food, but spent money in the shops on experiences and coffee. Terrific for all ages, all day … lots of places to sit and rest… if you needed to. A must for all and would be an amazing school excursion for kids/ teens.
Great day out going back in time. Interesting conversation with a "shrouding woman" in the funeral home who explained the role of shrouding women in 1800s Victoria. The mine tour and gold pouring were great. An enjoyable day out.
Rude staff who treat people with mask exemptions as if they are diseased and will give you disgruntled looks, I was even denied from being able to participate in an underground mine tour as a result of not being able to wear the mask. Everything was also expensive and very little is actually included with the entrance fee and you are essentially paying to walk down a short street of shops.
