Fantastic and informative visit deep into the Vidgelmir lava cave. Our guide Joy was an absolutely joy! Very well informed, easy to understand and kept a good pace. We were lucky and had 6 in our group, others had 15-20. There is a slightly tight entrance to the cave where you have to duck a little but it's short and easy to do. We went 700m deep along a wooden walkway. There are multiple staircases but as someone with a knee condition, it was very manageable and not rushed. Lots of interesting facts along the way about the different 'rooms' with joy pointing out various colours of the rocks and different lava formations. Fun section at the end where all the lights get switched off and you're in complete darkness for minutes!

This was a fun and informative cave tour. Our guide Joy was energetic, informative, and funny. You go deep into the Lava Cave where the temperature is around 40F, so dress warmly. The majority of the tour is a wide wooden walkways and stairs, our 7 yr managed the tour with no issues, might be tough for 4 and under.
I would like to recommmend this Cave tour. It was a very enjoyable and interesting experience. I think my favourite was the chocolate wall but also found the lava shites very funny. Our guide Joy was really knowledgeable about the cave and all the fabulous features we got to see.
What a fabulous experience this is. The drive to the cave is very scenic, and there is a short walk to the cave entrance from the admissions centre. The guide (Joy) was really knowledgeable and entertaining, and added greatly to the atmosphere of the day, especially with her spooky story in the dark towards the end. The trip lasted around 1.5hours, and had many great features. There were about 20 on the trip, and even two young children managed well. Very well worth the admission fee.
This is a great walking tour into a volcanic cave/lava tunnel. They have boardwalk throughout. )There is one spot where you need to squeeze through.) We spent 90 minutes on this informative beautiful tour and it was fantastic. Very worth your time and money! Be sure to dress warmer than you think you need to! It’s very cold underground!!
This was a brilliant experience. Our guide, Joy, was friendly, funny and very informative throughout the whole time, almost two hours. The price was good for Icelandic experiences (about £45pp) and the group was quite small, roughly 15-20 total, including some very well-behaved children, and everyone was obviously impressed with the atmosphere and experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the history, mythology and science of the cave. The operation was smooth and efficient and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
This was an incredible tour/ everything about it was cool and interesting and Owen was a knowledgable guide! Highly recommend.
Really special experience to be able to walk in a cave that was created by lava flow about 1000years ago. When you realise that you are walking on solid lava it is a feeling that nothing compares to.
Gareth was great! Would absolutely recommend.
Fantastic experience! Our guide, Gareth, was extremely knowledgeable and explained the geology and history in a way that was easy to follow and genuinely interesting. What really stood out was his great sense of humour. It kept the atmosphere relaxed and made the whole tour even more enjoyable. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an informative and fun cave adventure!
The cave is amazing and the tale about the formation and history of the cave is very interesting and informative. We loved seeing this and it was definitely worth the time.
You are very much prepared to enter the cave after you walked, perhaps half a mile through the blowing. Snow and cold. Inside, there’s a pretty constant temperature. It still of course is not warm. Our Guide explain the formation geology of this lava tube. He showed us the stalagrites and stalagmites that have been formed , but are very likely not going to grow unless there’s another flow of lava. . There is a thin one to 2 cm skin of lava that looks like ripples and waves, or dripping chocolate or melting wax that Lines the walls, and sometimes the ceilings. You have to go down two or three flights of stairs to enter the cave, and of course, then return back up those same steps that you leave. There was a well lit wooden walkway that made it easy to negotiate further Entry into the cave. Our group ranged between 70 and 81. All of us with some arthritic complaint, but we didn’t have any trouble. I had my hiking pole with a rubber tip with me, but it was more of a problem than the help. The tip would want to slip through the slats of the wooden planks. I hope you have time to fit this into your schedule
Wow, what an incredible experience! We were in a small group - just us plus two others. Our guide was lovely and shared her knowledge as well as answering our questions. As others have said, it is pretty cold down there so dress up warm! Quite a lot of steps up and down but no hurry. At the end you can experience full and complete darkness. Worth a visit for something really different.
Very informative. The tour guide was knowledgeable, energetic, and entertaining. This best was how friendly, kind and caring he was. Thanks for a once in a life time experience.
The cave is long and very cold and can be walked in complete safety. It's darker than limestone caves but the darkness brings more to the experience. The guide was nice and funny and made the experience an absolute blast.
Very good cave tour of a lava cave. Footing is excellent most of the time, with wood walkways. There is one tight spot at the beginning, so if you are scared of tight spaces, that may be a concern. Very knowledgeable staff. Very interesting cave. It's off the beaten path a little, but it is close to Barnafoss (which you should see).
A fun excursion. Honor our guide, was informative and helpful with a good sense of humour. 10/10. Wrap up well as it is 2 degrees in the cave, and you are there for over an hour. The wooden boardwalk made it safe to follow in a group. The darkness experience was a fun ending.
It is nice but if you have seen lava caves before it can be skipped for what it cost. The experience is not very visual - you are basically in a black hole hearing geological explanations. The guide, Joseph, was very nice and funny.
Would highly recommend this hidden gem in Husafell area. We only saw the advertisement after our glacier tour (not as well advertised as other lava caves) and decided to drop in. Thankfully there was still availability for a tour. Our guide, Joseph, provided clear and entertaining explanations. The wooden boardwalk made the tour easy to navigate. It's a chilly inside so dress warmly!
We had such a fun time on the Cave Explorer tour! Our guide was hilarious and informative as he walked us through how the cave was created throughout time from a volcano eruption (sorry, can't remember his name!). The tour takes the full time, and when we were there the first week of August the cave was just above freezing, so bring layers including a warm hat and gloves! We had some strange comments on our tour from others so let me say this: #1) this is an educational tour, not a thrill seeking nonstop cave exploration tour. The group stops in different sections for 10 minutes or so to learn. If you have children who can't sit still or won't be able to handle listening during the tour, perhaps don't bring them or don't book this tour. I found it to be informative and fun, and anyone who can do sets of steps and can walk on ramps should be able to do this tour! #2) if you choose to bring children, leave the light up shoes at home.
After almost two weeks in the Westfjords we were lat minute looking for a visit nearby Reykholt and found rather accidentally this hidden treasure. Rather expensive but worth every penny. We had an interesting and enthousiast guide: informed us enough without spoiling everything in advance. We would certainly recommend visiting this unique lava cave.
Very interesting to see the lava tube, one of the largest of its kind. Our guide from Finland is a humorous professional guide. We really enjoyed this activity.
First thing I noticed when we arrived was a tip jar. WTH? Is this not Iceland? Very disappointing. But it got better from there. Once the tour got going, we were glad to get out of the weather and into the cave. But the floor was VERY VERY SLIPPERY for a while. Not kidding, this attraction *could not* exist as-is in the U.S. - too dangerous and not ADA compliant, for starters. Fine by me. Thank God do-gooders haven't yet converted Iceland into Disneyland. The ice stalagmites and ice crystals on the walls were beautiful! If you're looking for a break from waterfalls, you should check out this cool volcanic cave.
It is a well run facility with good tour guides. Pretty interesting stuff. It has a nice boardwalk through most of the tunnel which makes it easy to navigate.
We went today on the 3th of July 2025 and It did not disappoint. Our guide Hilary was the absolute best part. Funny, charming and a musical spectacle to end it of (ask for her this summer!). 10/10 experience.
Amazing experience! Definitely make it a stop during your trip. Knowledgable guides. Our guide, Tristan, was great!
I highly recommend this tour. I almost didn't book this for our family because I was skeptical that it would be a good value. But thankfully they proved me wrong. This was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip for our teenage son. The tour guide, Tristan, was great. He was passionate, informative, and humorous. If you are in the area, definitely check it out.
It was a really good tour. Our guide was friendly and informative - talking about the caves formation and several features found inside. The path is mostly covered with wooden walkways (the one exception is at the start of the cave, which has some mats covering the ice/water) so it is easy to navigate and very safe. I highly recommemd this tour.
Arrived on spec as we up near Hraunfossar and management saw it on Google Maps. They fitted us on the last tour and we had an entertaining, informative tour through the cave. Niall was knowledgeable and look after the group. Fascinating. Yes it does cost c£50 each but there is the reception, safety helmets and infrastructure to upkeep plus a guide to be paid for. Against other paid for attractions it was good value in our opinion. It is off an official road which is gravel.
This was fascinating. Gave us a real understanding of the geology of Iceland and why waterfalls appear to come from the middle of a cliff face. Would highly recommend and Aoife our amazing Irish guide had a head full of interesting facts. Was even better as partner and I had a private tour as the only ones booked for 10am!
Awesome tour! Best cave tour in south and west Iceland. Aoife was our guide and was very charming and informative. This is worth a detour from the Ring Road
The Cave was amazing. The tour guide, Aoife, was very knowledgeable and was great at her job. Being inside a lava tube of a volcano was truly spectacular and one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland and is definitely worth visiting
Visited here midweek in March. Our trip was hosted by Aoife, a really knowledgeable Environmental Science graduate. The trip was exactly the right balance of adventure and education. Superb wooden walkways throughout most of the length of the cave made for easy exploration. Decent visit length at over an hour and with 900m of horizontal cave to explore. The cave goes on for another 900m but alas that isn’t explorable by visitors as the tunnel floor is too strewn with boulders to continue the walkway. A really interesting perspective to see an underground tunnel created by lava flow rather than hydrological or glacial erosion. Reasonably expensive but recommended.
Such a cool experience, learned a lot. Especially great to do in the winter because it is warmer in the cave than above ground. A cave formed by lava! I’ve explored various caves, but this one was unique in that it was formed by lava flow. The guide was knowledgeable and told great stories.
This was a blast! We loved the tour. It was so interesting and the employees are so nice and educational! We also loved seeing the owners doggy.
This was really neat!! If you love geology you’ll love it even more. You need to be able to handle stairs & good amount of walking but my 4 year old was able to keep up & loved it. I was impressed they build an impressive wooden walkway in there! The end you can do total darkness & my daughter said she wanted to do it because they give you an option of not experiencing it. The longer we were in it the more she got nervous but everyone was very supportive. I’d recommend little ones not do the total darkness option because I felt bad we distracted everyone from their experience. She also had light up boots we forgot about until she shifted her weight. She did love it though, we all did !! Between this & the Into the Glacier, land of fire & ice really rings true!! We highly recommend this unique experience!! Pictures don’t do it justice!!
I visited this lava cave with my 35 year old son. We did not book before we got there but the staff were very helpful and allowed us to go on the next trip so we didn't need to wait long. Our guide was really good and the lava cave was really interesting. We would definitely recommend this place. Thank you for a good visit:)
We had a great tour of this, Iceland’s largest lava guide. Our guide was from Dublin, and filled our tour with interesting observations and insights. Most thought provoking was when he turned out the lights and encouraged us to consider the impact to our other senses and how we primarily depend on our sight. The physics of the cave formation overlapped my experience in glass melting, which the guide was eager to discuss and trade insights.
What a fantastic experience. The walk is a half mile deep and The guide did a great job explaining the lava flows and cave formation. It's fascinating to walk through it. Wear hood hiking shoes and a coat, it's 32 degrees down there. Not good for squirmy small children.
One of the most interesting excursions done in Iceland. Our guide, a geology student, explained to us with great clarity and competence how the quarry was formed and what geological phenomena have affected it over the centuries. Environments and structures are unique.
Beautiful experience! Our guide Lilla was great; she was really knowledgeable and funny! We would recommend to book this tour!
This is so worth doing. It is the biggest lava cave in Iceland and is totally fascinating. Our guide, Niall, was really passionate and knowledgeable and gave us a wonderful tour. It is a tricky walk for those who aren't so steady on their feet and there is no disabled access (for the obvious reason that it's over natural terrain in the earth), but if you are able-bodied and have warm clothes, definitely go here.
This tour is worth the money. We had a great guide called Lilla and she did a really good job mixing history, geology and funny stories all together. She also sang for us in the dark with her beautiful voice. That was a great end of good tour. Thanks
I believe our guide's name was Daniel. I have waited too long to review! He's a geologist. He did a great job of explaining how a lava tube is formed and all the elements we were seeing. And he's funny! We were able to see ice formations but I understand that they are not always there. Dress warm. Lots of steps in and out.
The Cave tour was a highlight of our Iceland trip. The access was safe, and the guide was informative and entertaining. Be sure to dress very warmly for your tour!
This was an amazing adventure into the Earth with our Icelandic lady geologist guide. She was a wealth of knowledge and when we turned our lamps out and listened to the near silence, she sang an Icelandic lullaby her mother sang to her. Mesmerizing I will never forget this wonderful experience. Out in the middle of no where, but worth the drive into the high country.
We definitely enjoyed our experience visiting The Cave Vidgelmir. Our tour guide was exceptional in ensuring we all were safe and kept at a good leisurely pace. In addition, the cave itself has great lighting brought in to highlight features and keep things safe for visitors. What makes this specific cave amazing among others is that there are no questionable creatures in here (bats or the like), that inside is consequently almost sterile as a result, that it is fairly large except for one part initially and that there is a professionally-guided tour. It really can't get better than that going into an often dark space such as this. Truly remarkable and cool hearing about what happened that caused this cave to form! If you find any of this information helpful, please consider giving a thumbs up and thanks!
My husband and myself went on this tour in June 2024 and I highly recommend this experience. I was very impressed with our guide and the tour. The hardest part of the tour was the driving the gravel road to get to the start :) It really is a well-run operation and safety first was definitely a top priority with the staff! A great and unique experience!
We had a great experience with our tour guide, Aoife. A lovely girl from Ireland with a wonderful smile and cheerful demeanor. She made it very enjoyable. She also was very knowledgeable about the formation of the lava tube, and minerals, etc. She answered every question our group posed to her. We have done other lava caves, but this is clearly one of the largest and most interesting. At this time of year, early June, you can still see the little Ice Ghosts that form from water dripping. They were fun to see and photograph (there are already some photos of them in this listing). However, note that they will be gone as the weather warms up.
Amazing experience and only a short drive beyond Barnafoss waterfall. The tunnel was really cool to see with some epic ice formations, lava formations and Eva our guide was brilliant, funny and informative! Brilliant cave to see, worth the trip.
