Surrounded by towering mountains and tucked into a scenic fjord, Ísafjörður is the cultural and historic heart of the Westfjords. This charming fishing town dates back centuries and features some of Iceland’s oldest timber houses, remnants of its days as a Danish trading post. A short stroll reveals cozy cafés, local boutiques, and the harbor area, where you might visit the Westfjords Heritage Museum to learn about life in this remote region. With its blend of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty, Ísafjörður offers a perfect introduction to the wild and welcoming Westfjords.
Often called the most beautiful waterfall in the region, Dynjandi is a powerful cascade that fans out like a bridal veil down a cliff face. The main waterfall drops 100 meters, with several smaller falls below it that you’ll pass on a short but rewarding hike. Surrounded by raw, untouched nature, Dynjandi is a highlight for photographers and nature lovers alike—majestic, remote, and unforgettable.
Just a short drive from Ísafjörður through a scenic mountain tunnel lies Bolungarvík, one of Iceland’s northernmost fishing villages. Here, we visit the Ósvör Maritime Museum, a full-scale replica of a 19th-century fishing outpost. With turf-roofed huts, drying racks, and traditional rowboats, this open-air museum offers a vivid glimpse into the harsh but resilient life of early Icelandic fishermen. The ocean views and coastal cliffs add a dramatic backdrop to this step back in time.
Rising 638 meters above sea level, Bolafjall Mountain offers one of the most breathtaking views in the Westfjords. Weather permitting, we’ll drive up the steep, paved road to the summit, where a dramatic skywalk platform extends over the cliff edge. From here, take in panoramic views of the North Atlantic, nearby fjords, and even the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve on clear days. It’s a high point of the tour—literally and visually.
Tucked along the edge of Önundarfjörður, Flateyri is a peaceful fishing village known for its colorful homes and quiet charm. Once a whaling station and trading hub, it’s now a great spot to experience small-town Icelandic life. You’ll find quirky highlights like the “Bookstore with No Staff,” inviting walking paths, and sweeping fjord views. It’s a lovely place for a short break and a window into the rhythm of rural life in the Westfjords.
One of the oldest settlements in the Westfjords, Þingeyri sits at the base of a broad fjord and has a rich Viking history. The village is home to a working blacksmith’s forge, cozy cafés, and friendly locals. If road conditions allow, we may detour up Sandafell, a nearby mountain with a winding track that leads to a fantastic panoramic viewpoint—perfect for photos and a quiet moment above the fjords.

Flavia was a great tour guide. We enjoyed the Dynjandi waterfall, view from Bolafjall and lunch in a small fishing village. Highly recommend.
Great communication, guide, tour, etc!!! Wonderful place and sights!
An extensive itinerary for a one day tour. Everything worked well on this tour from cruise port pick up to drop off. We saw many diverse and interesting sites, several of which were not available through the standard cruise ship offerings. Our Guide, Max, was personable, interesting and attentive. He worked very hard to ensure that we enjoyed this experience. We have no hesitation in recommending this tour.
This was an amazing tour. Our guide, Flo, was fantastic! Super friendly and informative. Very accommodating to my group’s needs. Great communication prior to meeting up. The waterfall was an amazing site and they had the perfect itinerary for a cruise excursion. And we made it back with time to spare. Take this tour! Highly recommended.
Jake Lampe was a pleasure to do business with, booked 2 private tours with Valkyrie. Anna was our guide. She knew her craft, was very engaging and a pleasure to be with for both full day tours. Would highly recommend both Jake and Anna for any tour you might book to see the area. I've booked other private tours in my travels in US or international. They rank right up on top, no question about it.
Our experience was phenomenal! Flo made our trip so enjoyable and easy going. We felt like we were getting a real Icelandic experience, from the waterfalls, to the stop for pastries and coffee and lunch at a real Icelandic eatery. We did so many fun things on this tour and everywhere you look is magnificent. I highly recommend this tour!
We were unable to make this tour due to our cruise ship skipping the port of Isafjordur. We encountered rough seas between Norway and Iceland so the ship had to slow down, making us a half day late for Reykjavik. Thus the domino effect! So disappointed about the change of itinerary but Valkyrie Tours were prompt to respond and hopefully I’ll see the refund shortly.
Jake was an outstanding tour guide. He made the entire tour very interesting and was extremely informative. The tour really highlights the extreme diversity of Iceland.
We had an excellent tour of Westfjords with Jake. The Dynjandi waterfall was amazing. Just stunning. I highly recommend Valkyrie Tours.
This was a great excursion Easy pick up at the pier with good directions on how to find them. Anna was a great guide who knew the area well.
We had a wonderful tour with Stefan today with our 13-member family group. We had a 70-year age range between the youngest member and the oldest member of our group, and Stefan was easily able to accommodate our range of activity levels. It was very well-paced so we didn’t feel too rushed as a large group. We also learned a lot about Icelandic history, culture, and music. Glad we went with this tour over one of the standard cruise ship ones— highly recommend!
Jake was an excellent tour guide. He told us so much about the area on our way to the waterfall and other stops. He used a microphone so everyone could hear well. It was a small group so it felt like a private tour. We highly recommend this tour.
We visited Isafjordur Iceland on a Celebrity Cruise. Anna met us at the dock for Valkyrie Tours and was our tour guide. Our first impressions were not wrong. Anna was a delight. She was professional, happy and bubbly and very interesting. She was very knowledgeable about the places we visited and all the places in-between. Would recommend her and Valkyrie in a heartbeat.
We had a great time with Valkyrie tours in the Westfjords. Iceland is amazing and our guide Jake made it even more special. He is kind, funny and very knowledgeable about Iceland. He answered all our questions (even the dumb ones) with kindness and patience. I really appreciated how we never felt rushed or herded as a group as well. Thank you so much Valkyrie tours. We will be back!
Our multigenerational family of 11 people ages 70 to 2 years old just returned from a week in Iceland. We traveled in different areas throughout the country with Jake & his associates. They were organized, on time, accommodating & knowledgeable. Jake personally helped me with planning & ideas to suit our family who had various interests. I HIGHLY recommend this group with no hesitation! Thanks Jake for adding to our memorable family trip of 2025.
Jake is an absolutely awesome tour. I love birds and he spent an extra hour trying to find special birds for us to view. Felt safe even though a really windy day. Overall excellent tour guide, would rebook with him in an instant.
Jake was an informative guide who shared interesting local knowledge and catered to individual needs of participants. He provided friendly service and allowed sufficient time to take memorable photos to reflect on our time in Isafjordur. Appreciated the stop at a local Cafe for lunch.
What an amazing tour with Jake. So informative and funny. Had great music playing the background. He went out of his way to make sure we saw everything possible. I couldn't recommend valkyrie tous highly enough
Had a very enjoyable tour and saw so much of the Western Peninsula. Stephan, our guide/driver was local and very knowledgeable about the area. We could ask him any questions and he was very informative with his answers. We also appreciated having a small group instead of a big tour bus.
We did a private tour of Isafjordur and Dynjandi today with Anna, it was amazing! Anna was waiting for us at the cruise port, and she knew the best time to take us to the waterfall when it was the least crowded, She waited for an hour while we explored the waterfall at our own pace. She then took us to a quaint museum site, which could only be accessed by their Tesla car, and not big buses Later, she took us to a charming small town and also a grocery store where she knew they had the best prices for chocolate bars for souvenirs. Anna is a native Icelander and shared her love for her country, culture and customs. It was a highlight of our trip!
You cannot go wrong with hiring Valkyrie Tours! Stefan, our guide was wonderful! He is a local with a true love of his homeland that helps you experience the majesty and beauty that is Iceland. He knows the best places to go and makes it a point to go out of his way to give you the best possible experience! I am so glad we met him and had the opportunity to spend time with him on this tour, even our baby loved it!
We just returned from our tour with Jake — what an amazing experience! It was the perfect combination of learning, adventure, and breathtaking scenery. Thank you, Jake, for bringing the spirit of Hawaii to another beautiful island of Iceland. Jake’s energy is contagious, and his knowledge of the local flora, fauna, and history made the tour truly special. The waterfall was absolutely stunning! We also had the chance to see baby birds and visit a traditional fishing village — places we would never have found on our own. We highly recommend taking this tour with Jake — it’s a must-do! – Nataliya & Simon
Jake, the owner of Valkyrie Tours was very knowledgeable about the area and history. He made some stops on side roads that you would never get with a larger tour. This trip was simply outstanding. I highly recommend Valkyrie Tours.
Had a very nice time and trip with Jake. For a great price! It was cheaper for 3 people than for 1 person on MSC. We saw very nice things and gave a nice explanation with it. Stopped where big busses couldn’t stop so it was amazing.
Best tour ever today with Jake! Thanks for the great day on our stop in isafjordur. We will always use Valkyrie tours when we are in Iceland.
We had such a great day on our tour from Ísafjörður! The scenery was unreal — dramatic fjords, cute little villages, and a couple of spots we never would’ve found on our own. Jake was our guide and he was awesome — super friendly, funny, and knew so much about the area. You could tell he really loves what he does. The whole day felt relaxed and well-paced. We weren’t rushed at all, and there was plenty of time to enjoy each stop. It honestly ended up being one of our favorite days in Iceland. If you’re in the Westfjords, definitely book this tour!
Our private tour of Ísafjörður was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of our entire trip to Iceland. From the moment we met our guide, Jake, we knew we were in for something special. His knowledge of the Westfjords' history, geology, and local culture added so much depth to the experience—far beyond what we could have learned on our own. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. We explored hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and quiet fishing villages that felt untouched by time. One of the most magical moments was standing at the edge of a remote fjord, with towering mountains behind us and not another soul in sight. It was like stepping into another world. What made the tour even more memorable was the personal touch. Jake tailored the day perfectly to our interests, whether it was birdwatching, photography, or simply taking in the peaceful landscapes. He even took us to a charming local café where we had the best rhubarb cake we've ever tasted, yum! If you're considering a visit to Ísafjörður, we can't recommend Valkyrie Tours enough. Jake gave us a genuine connection to these stunning, lesser-known parts of Iceland and left us with memories we'll treasure forever.
This was my third trip to Iceland, and hands down one of the best experiences I’ve had here. The Westfjords were stunning, and our guide Stefan made it unforgettable—funny, incredibly knowledgeable, and super professional. He totally customized the trip to fit what I wanted to see, which I really appreciated. The vehicle was very comfortable and clean, and the whole day just felt easy and special. Couldn’t recommend it more.
We had an amazing day tour in Ísafjörður with Valkyrie Tours, and Stefan was a fantastic guide. His deep knowledge of the Westfjords, engaging storytelling, and great sense of humor made the experience truly memorable. The tour took us to stunning, off-the-beaten-path locations, and Stefan’s passion for the area really shone through. It felt like exploring with a knowledgeable local friend. Highly recommend!
A beautiful experience during our stay in Iceland. Despite the significant challenges posed by our group (small children, individuals with disabilities), our driver managed to make the tour a wonderful experience with many highlights for everyone.
Great tour with a local guide who provided us with lots of interesting information! He spoke a great English! It was really a lot of fun! I would love to come back!!!
What a great trip! Beach, seals, Dynjandi waterfalls and cosiness of a typical village! Super! Jake was a friendly driver who drove us around safely. 1 tip: definitely bring a bottle of water.
Wow! Fantastic tour with interesting info! Our guide was Jake and took us to the best hotspots! RECOMMENDED!!! And seals seen😍
We, three children and three adults, made a wonderful trip to the waterfall. With stops on a dreamlike beach, in a fishing village and at a fjord where you could see seals. It was very relaxed, there was no time pressure as we knew it from other providers. Therefore, I can highly recommend the provider. We arrived on an Aida ship and the tour started directly at the port with a small bus. We, three children and three adults, took a wonderful trip to the waterfall.
