Itinerary
Perugia, the regional capital, is an ancient city located in central-northern Umbria. The historic center is built on the high hills along the right bank of the Tiber River
The Rocca Paolina, or Paolina Fortress, is right in the historical centre of Perugia and one can enter via a door at Porta Marzia or the escalator system that connects Piazza Italia with Piazza Partigiani.
Porta Marzia is an ancient Etruscan gate dating back to the 3rd century BC, once the main southern entrance to the city, now incorporated into the walls of the Rocca Paolina as a remarkable example of preserved classical architecture.
Corso Vannucci is the main street of Perugia, a lively pedestrian avenue lined with historic buildings, shops, and cafés, connecting the city’s main squares and offering stunning views over the Umbrian valley.
The upper marble basin has twelve sides divided into twenty-four smooth panels of pink Assisi stone. Each one is separated by an equal number of white Carrara marble statuettes set on ledges between the panels. Some of the figures represent personages from the history of the city and legends, while others are symbolic.
The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is located in the historical centre of Perugia on Piazza IV Novembre, its southern façade facing the square.

Very informative, interesting and well planned. We feel like we took a tour and gained a friend! We would DEFINITELY recommend Marica!
Wonderful tour! Michele was extremely well-versed and well-educated in everything about Perugia. An excellent guide, very personable and answered all of my questions. A thoroughly enjoyable two hours....highly recommend.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided great information on the city of Perugia. We got to see the most important churches and buildings. We really got a sense of the historic center. I highly recommend this guide!!!
Our guide was fantastic and extremely knowledgable. His English was top notch. We learnt a lot about Perugia. He gave us some options they suited our pace and fitness. Perfect
Simona truly captivated us with her guided tour of Perugia. We have a new appreciation for this Umbrian town. The underground ruins were especially interesting to us, with the explanations going back to the Etruscans and how to spot Etruscan vs Roman etc Grazie Simona!
Perugia is wonderful. But the guide really did not bring it to life with stories. A very nice person, warm, warm and great English, but we did not feel we left with any much more knowledge than before.
Excellent tour. Our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about Perugia. We truly felt as though we had an insiders look at the town. Would highly recommend!
Wonderful guide - knowledge of history, the people of yesterday and today in this fascinating region was incredible!
For first time visitors to Perugia I HIGHLY recommend this tour.We were so lucky to have the lovely Marika to show us around below and above this beautiful city. She was highly knowledgeable but also FUN..There is a lot of historical information to take on board when trying to understand how Perugia began but she showed us everything with such patience and without any rush or worry about time constraint. She gave us some top class tips for restaurants which became the highlights of our wonderful short stay in the area. She thought it was very special that we were from Cumbria (UK) visiting Umbria (Italy) and drew so many interesting Roman connections between the two distant regions..so much we have since researched and all fact!!Thanks so much Marika!!
Our guide was wonderful. It was pouring rain when the tour started so he changed the plans and took us to a museum. When the weather cleared up, we finished the tour. Great time and a great introduction to Perugia.
What a treasure Perugia is.l! We cannot thank you for the most interesting and entertaining way to dip our toes into the incredible history of Perugia.
Our tour guide shared a wealth of information! Friendly and fun! A great way to kick off your stay in Perugia.
All of Perugia is lovely and the tour was extremely helpful for understanding it’s history. The underground is Particularly fascinating. Frederica is an excellent guide!
Guide possessed a wealth of knowledge. Very informative & easy to relate to and offered helpful information on a seperate personal situation.
Elizabeth was so lovely! She arrived perfectly on time at the meeting point, interacted so sweetly with our 1 year old son, and gave us such a depth of historical context that made the city come alive. She took our energy level and physical capabilities into account and walked slowly, even waiting happily while we changed a diaper. We loved being with her and recommend you book too!
Our local guide provided an interesting overview to Perugia's amazing history, culture and art. She was brisk, but also had the patience to answer questions. Perugia is a great place to visit and a local tour is a perfect way to start the vacation.
My tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. She had lots of passion for her town as she spoke. So rich in history!!!
How to make sense of the centuries of change is a huge challenge. My guide, Marica, brought macro and micro details to life for me. Her personal warmth and her intellectual passion for what it means to be human were a true delight.
The tour was great, we highly recommend it. Michele took our 2 families to main Perugia attractions, told us very interesting stories - despite hot weather the pace was good and our kids were interested and engaged. In my mind 2 hours is optimal to learn enough about the fascinating story of Perugia. Grazie Michele - you are a great guide!!! Definately worth the money :-)
Wonderful tour that explained the fascinating history of Perugia and took us at leisurely pace around all the sights.
A well travelled local who is proud to call Perugia home gave great narrative of this Etruscan gem. Starting at the fort of Rocco Paolina, and ending at the Fontana Maggiore, my guide explained every detail in great depth. Highly recommended
We ujdertook last minute a private walking tour of Perugia. The owner, Alessandra, received our phone call at her home in off-hours and arranged for tour the following day. Michele was our tour guide. Michele is very personable and extremely knowledgeable. He catered to our interests and even deviated slightly from the routine tour to accommodate our personal interests. We were so impressed and pleased with Michele that we took the Assisi city tour with him the following day.
Can’t say enough good things about the walking tour of Perugia we did with Michele. His love and knowledge of his city and region were infective. Beyond the few hours we spent together Michele gave us tips and itineraries for the next few days. We discovered numerous gems off the beaten path that totally made our trip. Thanks Alessandra for helping us arrange the tour at the last minute.
Elisabetta was a terrific guide. She is from Perugia and clearly knows the city very well and her English was excellent. The tour was just our group of two couples. We toured a family owned workshop that produces and restores stained glass. The workshop itself is historic and the description of their work fascinating. The tour of the workshop was done by the uncle of the woman who runs the workshop. Then we walked through the city -- with a history tour en route from Elisabetta -- to a textile workshop. The owner of the textile workshop (and museum), Martha, still weaves on a loom from the 18th century and she demonstrated how this is done. The workshop is in an old (the first!) Franciscan Church that has been in her family for some time. The tour served as an excellent history and introduction to the city of Perugia and the artisan workshops were a special not-your-typical experience. I don’t think we could have had a better guide for this than Elisabetta.
We booked a private tour for 12 people, and I found that the staff at Umbria Con Me were pleasantly open to discussing what we would like to do. We opted not to go to any workshops as we were more interested in history and art, and what was even better was that on the day our guide Antonella was entirely happy to change the itinerary mid-tour, when we heard her description of an early Christian church that we had not known about. So don't worry about having to fix your route absolutely, in advance: talk to your guide. Antonella was delightful and extremely knowledgeable, and has in fact made that particular church a subject of study and publication, so if early Christianity is your interest, she's the guide for you! But her knowledge was so wide-ranging that in fact there were no questions she could not answer. I don't know if this is standard, but we started in the Rocca Paolina, and we thought that that was a brilliant beginning point: fascinating, rather startling, not quite like anything we'd seen elsewhere. Umbria Con Me can recommend places for lunch, and guides will fit around however long you want to spend eating. We took 1.5 hours. But do book in advance.

great knowledge,plesent,freindly...and the ice cream...

There was so
Much to see that was hidden in Perugia and our guide was passionate about her city and the gems to see

We took the train from Assisi to Perugia. It took about 15-20 minutes to get there. You can actually see Perugia from Assisi and vice versa. Once off the train, a ticket to the tram may be purchased at the train station lounge area. To get to the tram, simply walk down the train ramp number 1 going into town and follow the signage to the tram. The ticket opens the gates to let you into the area to catch the tram. You also need to hold onto the ticket to get out of the tram station, again inserting the ticket so that the gates will open to let you out. The views from the tram are quite beautiful. There is a point that you are in a tunnel for awhile. Once out of the station, you are atop an incredible hill an outstanding view of the valley.

We had the distinct pleasure of having Michele of Umbria ConME provide us with the talking tour. Yes, the same tour guide, who gave us a wonderful account of Assisi just two days prior see review Small Group Tour of Assisi.

Michele was especially excited about presenting this tour. He said that about 80 of the tours that he leads are in neighboring Assisi, so he is always glad to showcase his hometown, Perugia.

Perugia is a dynamic city. It has an old history, a university town and a sense of distinct neighborhoods, where as beautiful as Assisi is, it is all totally white and uniform in architecture with the exception of the Roman holdover, Miverva Temple. It is also famous for its chocolate!

Perugia, like many of the old Umbrian towns is located atop of a bluff. Perugia is much older than many of the Umbrian towns and much of the old walls that date back to the Etruscan times can still be seen. Michele explained the difference in the settling of Umbrians versus the Etruscans. The nearby Tiber River was the major land divide between the two early settlers in this area. The Umbrians mainly worked the land and were shepherds. The Umbrians did not have cities or towns. The Etruscans were a much more advanced civilization. They developed cities that included arches, aqueducts, cisterns, water wells and the like. We were shown an Etruscan arch that the Romans learned to recreate from these folks.

As a result, Perugia has been a city that predates the Roman occupation. The Perugians were an aggressive type of people, who often fought other city-states as Siena, Gubbio and Assisi over the years. Perugia also fought the Papacy over the years. As a result, the architecture is missing some of the early Renaissance style seen in Florence and elsewhere in Italy. The Papacy punished Perugia by building over an entire section of the city hence its underground was born.

Michele was wonderful in telling us all the history and how it tied into the architecture, the city layout, and so forth.

We toured an ancient Romanesque church in the round that is on the edge of the city, where the grounds offer fantastic views of the rest of the city and the valley below. We walked along what was an old aqueduct that ran down and then uphill to the main square where a major fountain exists. Today, the aqueduct is used a pathway to cross from one section of the city to another without having to go down a steep hill and walk back-up. There is also a major street where trendy stores, cafes, outdoor restaurants are located.

Michele did take us to the underground that was mentioned earlier. This area has been recently restored and is in a continuing phase of renovation. It had been sealed off for years. In about the last 20-25 years, the mayor of Perugia decided to open it up. So, he moved lots of money toward its restoration. It is now a partial museum, few shops and a great place to see how the punished folks lived when the Papacy decided to seek its revenge.

The main square, where the old aqueduct emptied into the fountain, is quite an exquisite square in itself. It houses the old magnificent cathedral with the secret altar, the detailed fountain that Michele will be happy to explain it to you, as well as the beautifully painted frescoed building that hosted the city business and meetings.

Overall, you will enjoy Perugia. It is definitely a lively town, with its own independence and sense of worth. The colorful history, architecture, narrow streets and extended sections of the city, make it a wonderful place to explore. Micheles English is excellent. He loves questions. It shows you have an interest and care about what he is talking about. He will enthusiastically answer them for you!

Again, thank you, Michele, for a wonderful day and tour!

Perugia, what a city! Beautiful! And our private walkng tour was excellent!
Best way to know the history of the city!

Very great and interesting tour! We learned a lot of new things.
Lovely city unique architecture well kept regal organized perhaps a little 'expensive in some services for the tourist (parking, bathrooms etc). Really a pearl.
Lieve vriendelijk gids! Ze was heel behulpzaam en vlot in het aanpassen van de tour naar onze wensen.
Easy to book. Excellent organization and Service. Availability and courtesy. Clear information.
Just returned from a weekend in a group, including over 20 boys under 16 years. Our guide Alessandra was nothing short of splendid. Punctual, precise, engaging, curious and absolutely prepared. We couldn't have hoped for better. We asked "umbriaconme" for a half-day tour in Perugia and a half-day tour in Assisi. Truly exhaustive, intriguing and exciting the guide of Alessandra, for adults and children. We were also given some tips for the rest of the holiday.
