- Our tour begins from one of the symbols of the city: the walls. We will enter the southern part, Porta San Pietro, the most imposing entrance to the Renaissance walls.
Itinerary
South entrance gate of the wall of Lucca: the most imposing entrance to the Renaissance walls. This door was built on the road leading to Pisa in 1566.
Piazza Napoleone, also normally known as “Piazza Grande”, is historically the center of the city’s political power. Today, Piazza Napoleone is lively animated by cultural events and concerts, including the Lucca Summer Festival.
The facade of the church is known for its asymmetry: in fact, one of the arches, built in the 12th century, is smaller due to the pre-existing bell tower. The church houses masterpieces such as the funerary monument of Ilaria del Carretto, the Sacred Conversation by Ghirlandaio, the Last Supper by Tintoretto and the altarpiece by Fra’ Bartolomeo. We will see this church from the outside but, If you want, feel free to enter!
Lucca is known as “the city of 100 churches”, but during the Middle Ages its “skyline” was dominated not only by bell towers, but also by numerous towers built by noble families. These towers represented social status: the higher the tower, the more important the family.
The Church of San Michele, located in the ancient Roman square of Lucca, known as Piazza San Michele in Foro, dates back to the 8th century and is dedicated to the archangel Michael. On the top of the church, a large marble statue of the Archangel Michael dominates, 4 meters high, with wings made of metal foil, depicted defeating the dragon. According to legend, on brighter days, a glow can be seen coming from the statue, attributed to an emerald set in ancient times, which has never been found.
e Tower stands on the corner of Via Sant’Andrea and Via delle Chiavi d’Oro, easily distinguishable from any point of the city thanks to the trees that grow on its top. he tower is 45 meters high, to reach the top you will have to climb 230 steps. Even if the climb can be a bit challenging, don’t let yourself be discouraged, because the view you can enjoy from above is worth every effort! Ticket cost: 8€
This square is characterized by an elliptical shape and you can access it through four vaulted doors. Although the remains are no longer visible, beneath the square are the foundations of the ancient Roman amphitheater dating back to the 2nd century AD, where gladiator fights once took place.
The Basilica of San Frediano is one of the oldest places of worship in Lucca. According to tradition, it was founded by San Frediano himself, an Irish prince who, having become a hermit on Mount Pisano, was one of the first bishops of the city between 560 and 588. The first mention of the basilica dates back to 685, when it is cited as ” basilica Longobardorum”. Ticket cost: 3€

Very informative and easy to follow. Covers all the highlights of Lucca. Nice that you can stop and start and donate your ownnpace.
It was very different experience to walk alone and listen to an audio guide. We enjoyed it a lot. Perfect for non early birds who wants to take it easy and not to be in a rush to get to the tour on time
Very well done. Love the maps to get you from more location another. Would do it again.
Could not access most of the audio guide. It was only partially working for both my wife and I.
Excellent, well organized audio guide + map. Easy to follow with just enough info so as to not get bored! I used it over two days to leisurely stroll around Lucca. Excellent value!
Overall covers a variety of interesting places. I think the voice is A.I. and it talks too quickly, with an American accent.
This would have been a good tour but it redirected us to Google maps which was not working well at the time.
Great self guided tour. We did lose our signal at one point so couldn't proceed until we managed to walk about and find one. The guide gives you detailed information about the sights. We were able to take our time, stopping for a break when we felt like it and finished it the next day. We had a question before we started and it was responded to immediately. Highly recommend.
It took us a bit to get the hang of the “e” guide, but once we got it, it was perfect! We had lofty self tour goals for that day. It was so nice to have someone do the “leg” work for us. We quick did the tour and got back to the train. We only spent a couple of hours, but could easily have spent more time. Great town. Glad we stopped in for a couple of hours on our way to Pisa. Would absolutely book again.
I usually taking walking tours of a city when I first arrive, and this tour had a really nice itinerary. Each site had interesting facts and stories - I especially liked that the information was available in both text and audio so you could read if places were too noisy to be able to hear the audio.
The sites chosen were interesting. There was a bit of double backing with route, I think that could have been planned a bit better. I expected it to be a bit longer, but was very happy to be directed to a couple of places that I wouldn’t have otherwise seen. Not all of the content was available on audio and the app kept skipping back to the beginning, but overall worth the cost.
It was hard to download and took several Tries. Directions were not at all Clear to get to next destination. The descriptions were very good. Needs improvement
This was my first time taking an audio guided, walking tour so I had no expectations. Upon my review, however, I recommend you try it out. Being in Lucca for the day we wanted to capture the highlights at our own pace, and this tour was an excellent choice. The narratives had very good content with a pleasing voice. The use of Google Maps was good, but we opted to use Apple Maps which we normally do. Otherwise, the great features were a personal guide in your "ear" as you explored the city, moving at your own pace, spending more time to explore venues of greater interest, and. being to pause or take a break anytime.
Audio Lucca Walking Tour was interesting with a lot of facts and not expensive. It’s comfortable to have it in any time and to go walking in your time.
It's very informative and self paced so you can go fast or slow as you please. There are pictures for the destinations to confirm that you've reached the right place, and as well to remind you later where you took the shot. I love that it's so affordable and very well done. Thanks for the lovely tour.
Very thorough and informative, with pictures so we'll remember where we took our pictures 😁👍 gracie!!
Well thought out, lots of great information, so much I may have missed without it. Really makes great use of time
Very enjoyable guide around Lucca. More flexible than following a physical guide - possible to stop for refreshments etc whenever you need to. Would highly recommend.
Although we often use a tour guide, for Lucca we opted for this very convenient and easy to use self-guided audio tour. It allowed us to see the charming town at our own pace, picking and choosing where we spent our time.
Very easy to use tour that worked seamlessly with google maps! Much better than some other digital tours we’ve done! Gave a nice broad knowledge of Lucca!
I was only in Lucca for a few hours. At first it took some time to understand the guide information. But, I like how you can click a link and it takes you to the directions how to get to place to place. The audio history is informative as well. However, I could not find the underground tunnels. I asked six people and no one could help saying there aren’t any.
What a beautiful city. Such a great base for walks from the city wall walk which is flat and easily accessible - watch out for bikes and wheeled "rickshaws" this a shared space - to walking parts of the Via Francigena starting just outside the city. Lucca itself is also a perfect city to walk around and visit the various sights, stopping on the way to enjoy a drink and a pastry or cake in the copious cafes and bars. Spoilt for choices for dinner options. You won't be disappointed, please visit.
Perfect tour much better than joining a group walking tour. Just enough information to absorb on the interesting well planned route through the maze of narrow streets and beautiful squares.
Great value for money. I didn’t want to do one of those massive tours and all the small tours were booked so I gave it a go. So good I might give the tours a miss from now on! Easy to use and informative and I took breaks and got coffee as I wanted. As a solo traveler it was brilliant. Thanks, Adam from NZ.
It's nice to do a self-guided walking tour because I like to stop in shops as I see them. 😊 My tour from Walking Cap was easy to use and informative. The "extra" information was unexpected and appreciated.
The audio tour was very helpful to get our bearings in Lucca and to be sure to see the main attractions with lots of helpful and historical information. The connection to Google maps was particularly helpful for directions around the city.
Easy to access. Well paced. Enjoyed listening and being able to read the information. The tour helped us get more familiar with Lucca, it’s landmarks and history.
Extremely helpful, interesting and easy to follow, you can add it to your google maps and away you go, brilliant, highly recommend to everyone 🙌
Great tour, worked perfectly!! We would not have seen half of the statues and buildings if we didnt book this tour. Was about 2 hours as indicated.
Interesting information and the navigation really helped. We were able to truly have a good taste of the city. I will do more of the walking tours in other cities.
Lucca is a great walking town, but we enjoyed our visit so much more with this digital walking tour. Easy to follow, if you get side tracked by pizza or gelato the user controlled tour is easy to stop and restart
Excellent tour. Davide was very knowledgeable and a fun person. Definitely recommend for a short tour packed with a lot of information.
The walking tour I took of Lucca was greatly enhanced by the audio/ written guide. The guide was informative, clear and colorful, and took around the amount of time estimated in the audio. Thoroughly enjoyed exploring Lucca using this walking tour audio/written guide. The suggestions of food to eat and places to dine at were very good. Plan to use the walking tour audio again on future trips. Highly recommend.
I loved Matteo's guide to Lucca! I am traveling alone in Italy to practice Italian, and the fact that the guide was available in both audio and text format was a great help. The website is incredibly complete, and the instructions at the beginning make everything very clear. I was able to do everything at my own pace, learn a lot about the city, and in the end, I had lunch at one of the recommended restaurants (Canuleia Trattoria), which I enjoyed very much! Congratulations and thank you very much, Matteo!
Everything was explained very well, clearly: even though it was concise, it contained all the important information about the place.
It was great. It allows you to explore the city with brief explanations that are informative, making it efficient, and you leave with knowledge of the place. The system is extremely practical, and you can do it at your own pace.
Very well explained route allowing to go at his own pace.
Very helpful, knowledgeable and very practical. Obviously it will never replace a visit with a tour guide but it is already a nice alternative.
Excellent option to visit the most important of Lucca at your leisure, with correct written or audio explanations.
Great app. Simple and practical. Well organized on the map, the explanations are interesting and not boringly long. Recommended
Easy-to-use and convenient guide for those who want to calmly get around the city. Economic price is added value
We discovered LUCCA thanks to the audio guide, well done, that lets you manage the times. The advice x the convenience and quality of the information. Yeah.
Great guide for both advice and ease of use, even the cost is contained, so, it is to be taken definitely!
We usually look for a free tour to get an idea of the city we visited, but this time there was no Spanish so we saw this option and we found it very comfortable and useful. Clear explanations of the places to visit.
Very nice city tour of Lucca. The individual sights were interesting. The information about the city is beautifully and understandably written. It was very pleasant as we were allowed to experience the city tour at our pace. We will definitely repeat this type of viewing 🙂
Matteo guide very efficient, very good value for money. View of the main points of the city in a single well thought out route.
The audio guide worked really well. It was nice to listen to a little walk, but it was also nice to be able to shimmer the text when standing at the selected places. Matteo is quick to welcome on WhatsApp. Inquiries are answered immediately, which is really nice that there is contact if something drills. It was a great advantage to have access for 3 days. In the evening before the trip, the app was downloaded to mobile. We didn't get it all in the day, so if we had been in town 1 day more, then you could take the rest there.
Very good guided tour of Lucca. I was shown and explained a lot. Good combination with goggle maps. Could interrupt or re-enter at any time
A good way to take an organized tour of the city at your own pace but without missing the points of greatest interest
