Really fun outing with expert guides who were able to teach our group a lot about the birds of the Yucatán.

We really enjoyed this tour. Our guides were great hosts and very knowledgeable. Note: the ruins were closed and there was no definitive timeline to reopen when we visited in Jan 2026. This did not diminish our enjoyment of this tour.
My wife and I had an excellent time with our guides Lugo and Lut. We got to see more than 50 species of bird in the region, and got to know our very friendly and knowledgeable guide Lugo who had exceptional local bird knowledge as well as our hilarious and charismatic guide Lut who brought laughs and a fun spirit to the trip. We also were treated to an exceptional lunch at a local taqueria, and a trip out to the lagoon. Unfortunately, as the Muyil archaeological site is down for maintenance, we were not able to see the ruins, but between the birding, the lunch, and the great chats, this was more than made up for. Perfect communication, did not ever feel rushed, and lots of accommodation and care for our needs. Would recommend this trip for birders all the way. Thanks Lugo and Lut for making this a five star trip!
Had an amazing trip with Lugo and Lot! Saw toucans, trogons, new world Orioles, hummingbirds, green jays, cuckoos, and other beautiful birds of the Yucatán. Muyil ruins closed currently but great bird watching nearby. Perfect timing on the breakfast, then I did the add on trip to the lagoon. Very nice way to see the natural beauty of Mexico!
I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to do this tour. I am only on Day 1 of my adventures here and I already know this will be my favorite thing here. We sax over 50 species of birds in 4 hours. Lugo was our guide and he was beyond amazing. I've never met anyone so passionate about his job and it shows he loves what he does. I am happy to have met new friends here. I will be back. Great tour company. Do yourself a favor a book this trip with Lugo!
Unforgettable Sian Ka’an Experience with Nico & Miguel We had an amazing experience exploring the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve with Mexicokan Tours. Our guides, Nico and Miguel, were absolutely fantastic—knowledgeable, calm, and genuinely passionate about nature and conservation. The entire tour felt very well organized and unhurried. Nico and Miguel explained the ecosystem, wildlife, and Mayan history in a way that was easy to understand and engaging. We were lucky to see incredible wildlife, enjoy the crystal-clear waters, and truly disconnect from the crowds of Tulum. What stood out most was how respectful they were toward nature and how safe and comfortable they made everyone feel throughout the journey. This tour felt authentic, peaceful, and meaningful—not commercial or rushed. If you’re looking for a truly intentional, eco-friendly, and memorable experience in Sian Ka’an, I highly recommend Mexicokan Tours and especially Nico & Miguel. One of the highlights of our Tulum trip!
Lea, the tour guide, was great! Have done the Si’an Kaan float & really enjoyed the experience. Note that it was overcast that day, and a bit chilly. But not too bad. Have also done the full day Mayan Cobá tour & loved all of the activities.
Our guid Carlos was very knowledgeable not only about birds but Mayan history. I did enjoy the trip, mexican lunch was good as well. Definetely I will book more tours with Mexico Can Tours next time I will visit Mexico
Special Thank’s to Jessica for this fantastic day in Sian Ka’An. She is an enthusiastic guide with a lot of humour. We’ve learnt a lot about te laguna and its ecosystem and we’ve seen a lot of animals living in this place. Environment protection is a strong value for Mexican Tour : congrat’s for that !!!!
We had an absolutely incredible tour with Luciano. His passion and knowledge for birding and the natural world was inspiring. We are so glad we did this on the first day in Tulum. We were confidently able to continue to find birds throughout our time in Tulum. It made our vacation so much more special and memorable. Thank you so much Luciano and Mexico Kan Tours! Also- Sian Ka’an is a must do!
The tour that Miguel set up for us was wonderful! Our driver was safe and friendly and the car was comfortable. We had a great bird guide, Luca, who met us early morning with coffee and homemade granola bars. He found us so many birds in and around Muyil. He took us for a delicious breakfast at a small local restaurant. Then we went into Sian Kan by boat and floated in the canal, finding birds all along the way. It was the highlight of my trip to Mexico!
Claudio was our tour guide and from the moment we met him he made us feel comfortable and welcome. He took us down this side road to a tree which was incredible with the amount of birds it had on that tree alone!! He could spot and hear every bird and took us the exact location everytime!!! WE managed 38 species and it blew my mind I would highly recommend this to anyone one that likes or loves birds Even on my phone I got loads of good photos and they give you binoculars if you ask (as we didn't bring out camera over with us) but even just looking at them was enough to have an incredible time, half way through he took is to a lovely authentic Mexican cafe for eggs and ham which was delicious and the staff were very welcoming. All in all a 10 out of 10 day You must go out with these guys and do a tour and you won't regret it!
We had an amazing time with Ursula!! She is incredibly friendly, super easy to talk to and very knowledgeable! We would definitely come back for another adventure with her!
The tour was perfect. We were impressed with the nature. It was beautiful. The guide Luige is very friendly and charismatic. It was worth it.
Miguel was exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and generous. He made the experience both fun and educational about the local birds, wildlife and culture. Can’t recommend this tour enough.
Our group of 11 adults (all extended family) were a mixed bag. 3 had birding experience and 8 were novices. We had 3 guides plus a driver—they picked us up from our rented home in Tulum. Jose, Marco and Emiliano were enthusiastic guides the entire time of our “half day tour” which totaled 9 hours including a quick break for coffee in the morning and a delicious lunch of chicken enchiladas. They assisted us in visualizing and identifying 45 different birds, many of which were lifers even for the birders in our group. Favorites included close up and extended views of the Altamira oriole, turquoise browed motmot, Yucatán jay, ferruginous Pygmy-owl and lots of social flycatchers. Jose, Marco and Emiliano really know their birds and know how to introduce visitors to these beautiful birds of the Yucatán. Highly recommend this tour!
this tour is amazing! floating in the canal was my highlight! our tourguide alondra was very friendy, funny and competent.
Terrific birding day Terrific guide and amazing day of birding in Sian Ka’an. I had Miguel for guide. We had a fantastic day. We saw so many great birds. Miguel his patinated by what he does, he is a great guy on the personal level as well. So highly recommend this tour company and Miguel as a guide!! Thanks Alainp
The tour was amazing. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, great at spotting birds (we even saw rare ones, and knew everything about the different archeological sites. Would definitely recommend. We met people that did this tour one year before us, and they remembered it and the guide, another proof that this tour is more than worth doing!
Paloma and paco showed us around the muyil site and the lagoons, it was great, the guides were infinitely kind.
The cost of the ruins, the boat and the swim in the Maya river were incredible ! The guide Alondla, told us a lot about the maya history, and Adan the driver was very helpful. I highly recommend this tour for an afternoon full of memories
This was a wonderful experience, enhanced by Miguel, our guide, who was very professional, knowledgeable and accommodating. Additionally, my wife and I were the only 2 people in the tour, so it was personalized attention. Plenty of birds and bird behavior. Great overall trip.
Had an incredible time with Miguel and Said during our half day birding tour. We paid extra for pick-up/drop off service since we didn't rent a car, and Said was our driver, he was super professional and lovely company throughout the morning. It was so peaceful waiting for the sun to come up and the birds to start chirping with Miguel, who brought us some breakfast and coffee. Once those birds were up, it was ON! Miguel knew great spots to bring us for a diversity of habitats, we saw so many birds even before entering the park. We had a delicious lunch at a local spot and headed into the biosphere. It was awesome to get to see the ruins, local neighborhoods and experience local food. Miguel was super knowledgable and great company, it was nice to learn a bit more about the culture through him and Said. Miguel kept a list of all the birds we saw, we got about 40 - 25 of which were new to me. My head was spinning!
I have been birding for 50 years, but this is the first time I have used a professional guide. The experience was outstanding! Miguel is extremely knowledgeable of the local birds, and knows most of them by sound. The experience was 10 times better than going alone. I have 800 species on my life list, and added 24 in one day. Highly recommended.
Do not miss this amazing trip, and don't even think about booking without the float portion of the tour. The river float was the best part of our 7 days stay in the area. Miguel from Amar Aves was incredible. His passion for birding, the local people, and the ecosystem was evident throughout the trip. The included meals were simple and perfect. Be sure you are ready for the sun and bugs... because you are in the jungle! Bring your camera! I brought my Canon Powershot and it was safe and dry during the whole trip. You are able to secure in the boat while you float. We saw so many beautiful birds (and a snake!) with Miguel's professional eyes and ears. I just can't say enough about how wonderful this whole experience was!
Terrific guide and amazing day of birding in Sian Ka’an. We had Miguel and greatly enjoyed our day with him. We saw so many great birds. Miguel also shared his bug spray with us, he was that nice. It made a huge difference. So highly recommend this tour company and Miguel as a guide!!
It was a bird watching tour. The guides, Miguel and Eddie, are terrific. They have tremendous knowledge not only about birds, but also about other wildlife, geology, plants, and history of Mayan civilization. And they are eager to share the knowledge. They are determined to help visitors see as many birds as possible. But we didn't see as much as we could have because the driver was quite late to pick us up. It wasn't his fault because the area in Tulum where we and other people to be picked up has no proper street signage thus is confusing. The tour company should take steps to handle this problem. Some people were in the van for 2 hours before everyone was found and we could get started. Miguel arranged good coffee and food for us and plenty of water. Mosquitoes were not a problem. All in all we were happy with our experience.
Mexico Kan Tours and Amar Aves work together to put on its birding tours. If you book, ask for Miguel. My friend and I had a wonderful time and we appreciated Miguel's immense expertise, amazing patience, and wonderful sense of humor. I truly cannot tell you how happy we were with the day and will not hesitate to recommend their services to any birder I know looking for a tour in the area. The trip was organized, the itinerary was transparent and flexible, and we saw over 60 species. I also recommend paying a bit extra to swim in the lagoon. It was refreshing and we managed to see a few more birds!
Well organized and very professional guide. Highly recommend if you are into birding. Transportation and meal included.
Favorite day of our vacation. Definitely a great half day tour for a nature lover! It was a great escape from resort life and a day I’ll always remember ! Our guide Claudio was so kind and essential for finding and identifying birds. He was knowledgeable the birds, nature in general and Mayan history. He was very patient with helping us fully see birds and used a pointer when needed. I am very grateful I got to see both the collared aracari and Pygmy-owl I wanted to see. I also greatly appreciated him sharing his eBird list so I could just enjoy the birds without worrying about taking notes. I am more into birding than my husband and am fairly new to it myself. I liked being able sit down before the tour and have some fruit and granola bars with tea/coffee and share more about ourselves - including our birding levels and also if we had any birds we really wanted to see. This helped clear expectations for the day and get us oriented. Half way through the morning we sat down for a more substantial breakfast (eggs, rice, beans, tortilla) and fresh smoothies which was good and gave us energy to complete the day. Other notes- -I was more interested in the nature part of the tour but the ruins were a wonderful added bonus. -It was a very early start of the day because we were all the way in Cancun but pick up was easy and smooth and definitely worth the trip. -Physically I think most people with any level of fitness can do this tour. The guide will go to your pace. There are some uneven parts and a board walk you need to be mindful on, but it is a nature reserve so this should be expected. -I appreciated little eco friendly aspects like having purified water to refill my water bottle.
Fab tour over 50 bird species seen. Migel made the excursion, his knowledge and understanding of the ecosystems was fantastic.
Claudio and Rodolfo were fabulous guides. Claudio was our guide and had an excellent knowledge of bird species in the area, helping us recognize and distinguish among small differences among related species and approaching wildlife with appreciation and respect. We were a mixed group including people at a variety of ages and experience levels with birding, and Claudio was very patient with my elderly father who is hard of hearing. He ensured we all got to see the birds once spotted and we enjoyed helping him find good angles for his camera (the rest of us were just using binoculars so we enjoyed getting to see the images). Some of our party noted that they have had bird guides in the past who would make outrageous and inaccurate claims, and this was not at all the case for Claudio and Rodolfo. Highly recommended!
It was an incredible experience from start to finish, very good treatment by the agency. I absolutely recommend doing this activity, all the team is very prepared and with a great knowledge of the area. Without a doubt, Mexico has wonderful landscapes and nature.
Miguel and Adam made our honeymoon! My husband is an avid bird watcher and it is often hard for us to find a guide who has the same level of knowledge- Miguel was amazing and truly a delight. He was so kind, gentile and knowledgeable and we learned so much about the local ecology as well as Mexico and it’s rich history- Miguel had a wonderful way of sharing his passion for birding and the environment with us.. but then he flipped a switch and was equally as knowledgeable about the local history of Muyil and the Mayan population that inhabited the region! I am a history enthusiast and Miguel blew me away with his knowledge! Our trip included a wonderful local breakfast, birding, a tour of the ancient site of Muyil and a boating tour of Sian Ka’An nature reserve- compete with a float down a river within the reserve- this is an AMAZING OPPORTUNITY!! If you are a nature lover or avid border- Miguel is your best option for a guide in all of Mexico!!!!
The idea of bird watching wasn't the top of the activities on my 'things to do' in Tulum, I was kinda skeptical about the tour, but my boyfriend was eager to go for it so I gave it a try. Honestly it was absolutely amazing! Firstly because it's Tulum, anywhere you turn your sight there's some magic. Secondly giving a try to something completely new, interesting and fun to watch all these species of incredible animals some of them endangered and/or endemic, so it's a unique opportunity to be so close to them and enjoy their looks and sounds. And finally our tour guide was the best, Miguel just makes you want to keep watching the birds! The whole team made our day! Such a great new experience and totally worth it! For those looking to go for something different, this is it.
When in Tulum, everyone visits the beaches, the ruins, and of course, the cenotes. Incredible birds are at all these places, but not everyone seems to notice them. After going birding one morning with Miguel, my partner and I began to notice and recognize the amazing birds of the region everywhere we went--including Turquoise-browed Mot-mots around Cenotes, Yucatan Jays in the forested edges of Tulum Ruins, the Great Kiskadee couple in our neighborhood in downtown Tulum--which greatly enhanced, deepened, and beautified our overall travel experience. This was in large part thanks the birdwatching tour in Muyil & Sian Ka'an we booked for our first full day in Tulum and Yucatán Peninsula. I'd call myself an avid birder (a pandemic distraction turned everyday practice) and my partner a bird enthusiast. We might have learned a few birds on our own across two weeks, studying our guidebooks and scratching our heads. But Miguel helped us see and hear more quickly, more clearly, and more enjoyably a great more variety of birds, including endemic species, within a relatively short span of time in the field, and he led us to wonderful and interesting places, like down dirt roads around the village of Muyil to bird edge habitats, we would not have otherwise known about or been comfortable going. We witnessed and learned about not only the regions' abundant bird life, but also its diverse history and culture, as well as its biodiversity in a way that seemed very organic and holistic. It was like the greatest outdoor field trip! We were part of a small group that included one other individual, a staff member from Mexico Can Tours who had never been birding before and wanted to expand her knowledge and experience to better support the travel company's mission. I thought this nicely reflected Mexico Can Tours' ethos of traveling with intention. In the end, Birdwatching with Miguel turned out to be a most memorable introduction to the place and one of our most cherished experiences of traveling to Tulum.
The early bird gets the worm, and the early birder gets the birds and beats the heat! Tiberio picked me up at my hotel and took me to Muyil. Miguel was waiting and we started at 6:30 for an incredible day. 52 species, 25 lifers for me. Miguel and Tiberio were super nice and enjoyable to be with all day. Miguel provided coffee, breakfast, and snacks. He is an expert birder with incredible ID skills (sound and sight). When he heard a bird, we almost always found it (real birders know about the ones that get away!). And he was very impressive at quick ID on flights. Patience, skill, and extensive knowledge--he has the skill set for great birding. Can't recommend this enough for serious and committed birders who want to spend a day exploring the rich biodiversity of the area.
This was indeed and extraordinary bird watching tour. Miguel, our guide, took us around Muyil on local roads and the nearby ruins. We saw many bird species and as novices appreciated Miguel's explanation of distinguishing characteristics and how birds interact with each other and their environment. It's worth noting that the pace of the tour was just right, slow enough to feel leisurely, yet moving on in time to see more and varied species. Miguel is a masterful guide to the world of Yucatan birds.
We're new to "birding" but Miguel made our birding adventure truly amazing! For starters, he gave us a quick tutorial on the proper use of the, all too important, binoculars! We walked around Muyil, the Muyil Archeological site, and the Sian Ka"an walkway and saw an incredible number of bird species (over 50), ranging from humming birds to large vultures! We wanted to see Toucans and we got to enjoy a clear view of some beautiful ones. Miguel, is keenly aware aware of the bird sounds as well as the proper angle and best light conditions to maximize one's birding experience. Miguel does a great job explaining not only the physical characteristics of the birds but also their behavior, migration patterns, etc. without sounding professorial. Likewise, we very much enjoyed his explanation of the Mayan symbols and their connection to nature, sky, birds, and water.
I had a wonderful birding adventure with Miguel Amar a few days ago. we wandered around the roads of a small village, explored the Muyil Mayan ruins and took a boat ride and a very interesting float at the Sian Ka'an Biosphere. Miguel found lots of good birds. Miguel shared info about the Muyil Mayan ruins as we watched for birds. The boat ride on the lake and canal, and the float on the river at Sian Ka'an were definitely fun. I was a little uncertain of the float but enjoyed it and I'm glad we did it. I added several new birds to my Mexico list! Thanks so much, Miguel.
WOW! I am so happy that I chose to purchase this trip with Miguel who was the MOST AMAZING host and guide. This was my first birding experience and it was just unforgettable. I'm hooked! Miguel speaks fluent English and he has an keen sense of hearing- it's rather remarkable- we saw many varieties of birds- and I was lucky to be able to see 2 different types of Toucans- and so many other birds endemic to the area- I honestly will come back to Tulum to come on another tour! HIGHLY recommend!!
A guide who's a nature buff. A very pleasant and interesting moment of life. Thank you very much.
The moment was, really funny beautiful and pleasant, only negative: the end, I wanted it to continue! Many thanks to Paloma and Victor for their smiles and expertise.
We had a great time with Carlos. The activities are great even if we would have liked to do more. The day was great. The only downside for the meal.
Amazing tour, wonderful place and staff attention, plan to return the next summer
It was one of the best experiences I have ever had, they met my expectations and above all made the experience unique.
Being able to get to know Mexico through birds was a majestic and unforgettable experience. The attention from the guide was super enriching and very friendly. He would definitely be back soon.
Great!! See species of birds that look otherworldly!! The experience is made fabulous by the guides, from the point of departure to arrival, luxury attention.
Very happy to choose a tour like this... I had many doubts about doing a bird watching tour, but certainly from the best experiences I had in Tulum. It's my first bird watching experience and I'll do it again when I get back to Tulum. Thank you Miguel for sharing so much. Super recommended!
