Booked this excursion well in advance before our trip and so glad we did. Good value for money for 3.5 hours. Everything was well organised, staff were extremely knowledgeable and interesting, delicious hot soup AND the weather was kind. Tromso skyline beautiful by night. We got to see the lights!!

we were unsure as to whether this tour would be going ahead as it had been snowing all day. but we hadn't heard anything so headed down to the meeting point. it was clear where you needed to be and there looked to be a queue but when things started it seem like people were coming from all angles to get on the boat. we found a seat upstairs and settled in for the journey. they did say that due to the weather they weren't sure if we would see the lights or not. the boat just headed out to the north of tromso. it took about an hour to get up there then it just idle in the water waiting. i did think that the boat would take us a bit further out but that could have been me misreading what the tour was. there was a bar on the boat that you could purchase things from. there was also soup included in the tour. we had that after we had been outside for a while. unfortunately for me i couldn't eat it as was too spicy but my friend enjoyed it. we did get a couple of breaks in the clouds where the lights peaked out but only small amounts. it wasnt until we were on the way back into the harbour that the lights really came out and gave us a show. was amazing
Trip was excellent , Crew were brilliant Especially Emma (I hope name is correct) who spoke excellent English, with a lovely Spanish accent was engaging, knowledgeable passionate, friendly and kindly took photos of us. Ship is nice with 3 levels 2 closed and one large open area perfect for pictures. The ship was pretty much full and but no issues getting service of taking pictures, although some patience required. We were lucky enough to see northern lights on trip but not guaranteed. Trip lasted around 3.5 hrs from centre of Tromso, food on board basic (soup cruise) but nice, recommended you eat before the trip. Trip was quite expensive but as are all trips, it all comes down to the northern lights if you don’t see them there isn’t a lot to the cruise as it’s dark so not much to see. Great trip for anyone would recommend
So glad we chose this cruise which not only had comfortable warm lounge, hot soup, bar, toilets, informative talk about the lights, friendly staff, but we saw the lights before leaving the port. Incredible. Great experience. Highly recommended.
We were very lucky to see the Northern lights since we got out of the Harbour. The Crew Tobias, Dacil and Alberto were very friendly.
Despite a heavily overcast night, we spotted auroras thanks to the captain's skill in finding a clear patch. Embarkation was chaotic—the meeting point differed from the map due to another boat's technical issues. We queued at the wrong vessel before relocating. Once aboard, the interior was cozy and warm. As we sailed from port, exterior lights dimmed for optimal viewing. Away from city glow and clouds, the lights danced vividly—a true spectacle. A faulty microphone meant we missed the soup service announcement, but they offered soft drinks as compensation. (A hot beverage would have been ideal against the chill.) Pro tip: Maximize time on deck; displays are fleeting. Note: Auroras often appear only on phone cameras as subtle grayish clouds to the naked eye. We were lucky—initial glimpses via app evolved into visible greens. Ships are impeccably equipped for harsh weather and emergencies, with thermal suits and ample lifeboats. A memorable, worthwhile adventure!
A northern lights cruise is a gamble, as you can't 'chase' the lights as well in a slow moving boat, however the gamble paid off and we had an excellent display after initially thinking we would not have much luck due to heavy cloud cover. The soup was delcious!
Very professional crew, very comfortable boat, very tasty soup. Got some great pictures as well. Absolutely would recommend for anyone who has the money to spend.
We were really lucky with the Northern Lights on this cruise which made it a fabulous experience. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the food was really great.
We had a fantastic trip and saw amazing northern lights!! Although we had a group on board who did not listen to the talks of the crew, the crew kept being friendly and kind. Very amazing crew! Thanks for the most amazing experience Carel and Linda
Everything was perfect. We had a smooth sailing, the crew were amazing, and we saw the northern lights as soon as we took off!
It was a cloudy night in Tromso, so I was excited at the prospect of hitting the fjords and chasing the lights on a 3.5hr trip. Sadly not. This was basically a very slow, dull boat trip around Tromso island. At one point the boat just stopped and bobbed about near the airport for half an hour to waste time before heading back to the city. I’m sure it’s amazing when the skies are clear - just remember to cancel 24h before if the forecast isn’t great. I wish I did!
Took this cruise as a last ditch opportunity to check out the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, the weather was bad and nothing was visible. The boat and crew were great- explaining everything and trying their best to get us somewhere to see the lights. My only gripe would be that the soup included in a weird veggie one vs a standard chicken noodle or something more common. The cookies were also hard as rocks.
This trip was great. The crew was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was like being invited to spend an evening on a friend’s boat. They kept an eye out for the aurora and the captain found some holes in the clouds on a snowy evening. We saw very fine aurora and had an excellent and very Norwegian dinner. Highly recommended.
Had the weather been good would have given 5 stars. Unfortunately there were high winds and snow on the night we cruised and as result didn’t cruise as such. We were offered a full refund with no meal or 50% refund with meal. We chose to stay on board end enjoy the meal. If you’re not a fish eater the vegetarian option was delicious. Shame about the weather but that is out of everyone’s control and we enjoyed the night anyway.
We had ideal weather for our Electric Northern Lights cruise with Brim Explorer. The sky was clear and the water calm. All the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and the lights put on a good show for us.
this is an amazing experience and the crew is simple the best we had an excellent time, the boat is beautiful the food the service, the guides everything is perfect
To be fair to the trip there was a snow storm which meant visibility was poor, so consider this when reading my review. However I was made aware that coach trips to see the northern lights offered a refund before getting on the coach on the basis that there was zero chance of seeing anything, which people accepted and were happy with the honesty. The crew did say they hoped we had our expectations set as low due to the weather. The staff were all very friendly and presented many facts about the local area and northern lights, we can't fault the staff. The boat was nice and warm, the toilets clean and plenty of seating. There is a bar on board which was needed Overall we were bored, three hours of boredom to be precise. I am sure if you knew you had a hope of seeing something it would be fun waiting but the fact we were told getting on that there was no chance it was just boring. There was no offer either of coming back another day for free. I know there is no guarantee however they should of offered the option of a refund up front and leave it to the individual choice To be clear the staff and boat are very nice - its the policy of the trip I didn't like If the weather is ok then book this trip
Absolutely the best trip so far ! We had to google the meeting point as it wasn't clear on trip advisor as it points to a carpark but it's actual the port edge outside the hotel listed. We waited in a queue and were directed to our boat. It was warm comfortable and drinks were on tap, we had hot chocolate but didnt sample the free soup but that was just because we weren't hungry it was served in bowls and looked lovley. We went up to the second dec and opened the door to the wonderful view. We were in and out until someone spotted the lights. They were hard to spot with the naked eye, but I managed to take lots of pictures on the night mood with no flash. It was absolutely amazing cold and we'll mindblowing we also had lots of information given to us during the trip and the guide who was English but lives in Norway was happy helpful and knew her stuff. I can't recommend this trip enough. The only disappointment was other people not paying attention i both enjoyed and felt very lucky to be there
The ship was having technical difficulties and the crew was diligently working on the issue. Even after an hour, the crew could not fix the issue and gave us an option to get a refund. I chose refund. The problem is if we had been intimated earlier, I would not have made the 30 minute journey to Tromso and wait the same time in the cold to take this tour. It is pretty cold to wait outside in the Tromso weather. From many previous experiences, such problems do not get fixed in time. The organizers of this tour should keep the conveniences of the passengers in mind too. Getting a refund was not worth the effort spent to take this tour.
Brimes promises to refund the money if the weather conditions to see the polar lights are bad. 120 euros paid for a small round under clouds, almost always in the same place, turning in circles and for a soup. The most expensive soup in the world, probably. The probability of seeing auroras was 10% before the tour, just outside Tromsø, and the crew admitted that. They sold plenty of drinks and, with the boat full, made a tidy sum for nothing in two hours. An absolute flop.
The breathtaking view represented the sheer power and majesty of the nature. Highly recommended. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.
We were moved onto this trip as the whale watching tour couldn't go ahead due to bad weather, which we understood for safety reasons. We were boarded on to the boat in the evening, but kept there for an hour while they sorted out a technical problem, which they ended up not resolving and we were all off boarded. They had all day in port as the boat couldn't go out and I feel that they should have made sure the update issue had been sorted earlier that day. Whilst we were offered an alternative night, you will appreciate most people schedule their precious time in Tromso ahead of the trip, so we ended up with a whole day of disappointment and now have to wait for a refund. I appreciate that Brim and others lose money when they can't sail, so even more reason that they should have checked the boat earlier.
This was a LOT of fun! The ride was smooth, the soup was really good, and it was nice to learn a little bit about the history of Norway and factors behind the northern lights. I will say, don’t do this cruise specifically looking for the northern lights. There are a lot of factors at play, so they’re not guaranteed.
Seemed like a no regret move to take this experience But here, no one will chase the northern lights for you For the 3 1/2 hours of the cruise, we made rounds in the harbour... if the clouds had not dissipated a bit, if would have just been a normal cruise I had hoped for the captain and his team to chase the northern lights, try to go to some place with less clouds... but it didn't seem to be part of their mission The guides though were very good
After very low chances of being able to see the lights, we went out to a good location and were able to see the northern lights! It was a very pleasant boat ride and our host Tobias did an amazing job! A+++ 100% recommended!!
I chose to do the dinner cruise as another way to try and see the northern lights. The whole experience lasted about 3-4 hours and I had expected us to go into areas where there was less artificial light, but actually this was a trip along the coast side of Tromso so there was always some light from the towns. We did not see the northern lights at all until the last 15 minutes as we arrived back into Tromso. That was fantastic of course but I would have thought that sticking to areas where there was man-made lights would reduce the chances of seeing the lights. The food was advertised as Scandinavian which I was keen to sample. However I was caught by surprise when the main course was lukewarm cod - not hot, not cold - but tepid. The crew tried to tell that that was how it was supposed to be served but I couldn’t eat it. The rest was good. There were presentations by the various crew members. The lead guy was Ivan and he was excellent, brought high energy to the audience and entertained. There was one member that gave a 5-10 minute scientific explanation of the northern lights which was good. But there was one member that droned on for about 20+ minutes about his personal experiences of flora and fauna in the area. It did suck the energy out of the room so didn’t love that. I was there for fun, not a lecture. Overall a pretty good experience but there were definitely ways in which it could have been improved.
This is not a trip for Northern Lights. You will be very very lucky to see the Lights on this trip. Do this only if you want to see Trmoso in the night from the boat. Not for northern lights. The staff was good and humorous but the main purpose is defeated
A very memorable evening with northern lights on a beautiful boat with the most entertaining host. Evan could easily be a top US late night comedian. He made us laugh the entire evening Plus he called us up on deck to see the lights in the appropriate time and explained how to take good photos of the aurora. No compliments will do him justice. The entire crew were pleasant. Food was good but in my opinion was not enough. Main course was a soup and it was lukewarm and the starter was small. I think food portions should be more substantial. Overall we had a great time and we have lots of good northern lights photo. Recommended
A comfortable way to view the northern lights while you wait in the well heated cabins. Only downside is that the light needs to be out in the sky over the exact route the boat takes, so good to book with the prediction checked. We had a no show. None the less, if u have nothing else for the night you can relax in the boat. We got bored after a while cuz no lights and once it is dark there is nothing to see outside and no entertainment on board either. They serve you a bowl of warm soup.
Nice cruise. Very modern and well maintained. The staff were informative and polite. Too bad it was an extremely clouded night and we couldn't see the lights. It even snowed few hours later
7 reviews i am shocked. This was the best adventure the entire week chasing the Auroras. The crew Fred & Lucas were very knowledgeable about the area, history and the auroras and th Polar Circle. The boat is panoramic and many decks to enjoy the fjord and they knew where ti find the aurora. Easy ride, pleasant and even served a warm soup. Id take this every night to chase the lights. If i would change anything is little longer ride during the aurora..it was high chances for several more hours and please serve some bread with soup! Yum. Thanks for a great experience!
It’s a cruise around Tromso island in a pleasant electric boat. If you want to hunt for the aurora I would recommend a land tour. If you fancy a chilled boat trip the this is for you. I’m sure it’s better if you see the aurora!
I would recommend this activity for those on their first or second day. The crew is very nice and does their best to find the northern lights. In addition the cruise allows you to see the night line. The only negative is that the cruise is so slow that you might be bored you if have been on a northern light hunt or have see the landscapes at night.
The boat was nice and the wifi plus bathrooms on board was convenient. The weather wasn’t look like we would see the northern lights so I wish they would have cancelled it or gave a refund for it. The ride is only 2 hours and I don't feel it is enough time to see the northern lights.
While we were not lucky to see the northern lights on our cruise, it was a beautiful clear night and saw many stars. Views of Tromso were also beautiful. A nice evening.
Beautiful scenery, comfortable boat, friendly staff. The ride is around the Tromso Island, I think it is the same each time. There is also a dinner cruise at the same time, the people who bought the dinner cruise sit at tables, and the cruisers-only sit at bar tables lining the windows. The talk was very informative, and I learned a lot about Tromso.
We booked this last minute the day after we arrived in Tromsø. We wanted an easy tour when dealing with jet lag and getting to know our way around. We had low expectations since we weren't going too far from Tromsø. On our tour, we happened to get very lucky, and got great views of the lights. The guide (forgot his name, a very charismatic Ukranian guy) was great, and very funny. in addition to being a great host, he spent a lot of time outside on deck helping people take pictures. He showed people how to use their phones, he took pictures with their cameras and with his own, etc. And when activity got good he would run inside where people were warming up to tell them. He was great. Otherwise the boat is nice and pleasant. There is comfortable seating inside, wifi, a bar, toilets, and they fed us a very good soup. The water seems fairly calm and even the folks in our party who get motion sickness had no problems. Our six year old had a great time. It was a very easy, pleasant experience, and we happened to also see really spectacular northern lights along with nice views of the city from the water.
Absolutely brilliant experience on this trip and well worth the money. We booked straight through trip advisor - you can also book direct. We were given a welcome drink when we got on board and your party gets their own table. We were then treated to a 3 course meal and tea and coffee, with the opportunity to buy extra drinks (they even have their own exclusive boat beer). The food was amazing but the team were the real highlight. They could not do enough - the captain had 360 views and told us when he saw the Northern Lights come out which we were lucky enough to see. Big thanks to Ivan who was an excellent photographer when the lights came out and Claire who was such a fab tour guide. We were so lucky to see the lights but would highly recommend the trip either way.
A great experience with a very nice boat and an enthusiastic crew, especially Ivan. He was great with his commentary starting with the safety briefing and informative discussion of Tromso history and details regarding the Northern Lights. We had a clear night and a great display of the Northern Lights. Ivan was as enthusiastic as we were and was constantly making sure we got on deck to appreciate the phenomenal display in the sky. He also was taking everyone’s picture with the lights even though he he had frozen fingers! Quite cold and windy, although the boat was a fantastic way to view the Lights. It had lots of space and it was warm. The captain and Ivan worked together, of course to let us know when to be outside so we could stay cozy and warm otherwise. Highly recommend the experience as it was an easy, comfortable way to search for the Lights.
Amazing trip. Gorgeous, modern, warm, comfortable boat, with lovely staff and they even told you when the Northern Lights appeared- so we could stay indoors and keep warm until then. So much better than the long minibus tour.
Well organized, delicious soup, was fun.
Great excursion in the evening. Northern lights perfectly seen - warm soup included in the fare and fine.
Even if we only saw a single Northern Lights, the ride was a great experience! The ship is great, wonderfully quiet, no diesel stench, you glide calmly through the night. The tour guide was very sympathetic and dedicated, conveyed many stories, background and facts. The whole crew was great. And also the vegetarian soup was very delicious and just the thing after the aurora sighting. Highly recommended!
The boat is small, with the interior tightest. During the tour we did not wear life-saving vest (I do not know if wearing them is not an obligation here, but I found strange). Guides are attentive and friendly. We were able to see the lights of Aurora. The waves swing the boat, which can make some people worry. Overall, it's a good walk.
We had already done other avec Brim explorers excursions and it had been perfect, so we decided to do this one too. The boat left port 45minutes later than planned, and then returned at the scheduled time. So we lost almost an hour visiting. I think the price is a little sad... On top of that, the boat didn’t remove the Tromsø area, knowing it was cloudy in that area so we didn’t see any aurora. Too bad.
Great boat, very friendly welcome. Everything was explained very well. Lots of space on the boat to take photos! When we found and saw the Northern Lights, the boat stopped. That way everyone could take pictures in peace. The crew was great!
They promised a cruise but actually they were just running around in circles for Tromso. The food was okay. Nice view of Tromso, but after fifteen minutes you can see it and then you have to sit on the boat for another 3 hours.
