What a way to be a part of the true nature around Tromsø! The Star Walk really was an amazing experience - we had incredible views on the walk up to the view point and then came back down the mountain in the snow! We felt completely safe in the hands of our guide Virgil, who was super friendly and very experienced - thank you Virgil for making our trip so special!
Fantastic snowshoeing experience under the Northern Lights! Our lovely guide - Pol - made sure that everybody quickly felt at ease and had a nice time during our drive to the destination. Even though it was a windy evening, Pol knew which spot to pick, so that we were sheltered and could enjoy both the activity and the stops for photos and snacks. I felt really spoilt with the delicious soup, hot chocolate and home-made cookies! It was a fabulous experience - I highly recommend it whether you are a snowshoeing pro or a total rookie - you will be well taken care of and will spend great moments exploring the Norwegian night landscape. A big THANK YOU to Pol and to Wandering Owl!
Definitely one of the highlights of my stay in Tromso. Something magical walking under the stars, in knee high snow with beautiful scenery. Karolis was an entertaining and informative guide and nothing was too much trouble. We were lucky enough to see the Northern lights and have some awesome pictures of the evening. Definitely recommend.
Max was a great guide, really cheery, knowledgeable and patient. We were in a small group, a couple of us found it very hard work; I've never done any snowshoeing before and am not a very sporty person, but Max was very encouraging and was able to adjust the tour to suit everyone, We were so lucky, the snow flurries cleared away and we walked over untouched snow, with a fantastic view over the mountains and fjords and ate our delicious soup under the northern lights! I am so glad I did this, I found it challenging, but a fantastic experience.
Our guide Karolis was perfect for the snowshoeing experience; he was funny, entertaining and full of knowledge and stories. We had a fabulous night with clear skies, plenty of stars, the northern lights, fantastic soup, great company, awesome warm thermal suits, and comfortable snowshoes..the list could go on. I believe were superbly lucky yesterday. We climbed about 400m and got quite hot (frankly I never believed I could be sweating) with a workout and saw the spectacular fjords even. Unbelievable! I would 100% recommend.
Our group of 8, had an arctic and enjoyable evening with Carolis as our guide. He identified an excellent route to help us enjoy the expedition even in the conditions of considerable deep layer of fresh snow. We snowshoed for about 80 mins before breaking to take some photos and indulge in dinner round the campfire. Wandering Owl has a very sustainable approach which I favour, and tries not to adversely impact the environment. I liked the flexibility, values and sense of caring that a small company does bring. Would definitely use them again if we were staying longer. Thank you Carolis!
We had an engaging and enjoyable trip out with Carolis to do the snowshoeing 'star walk' activity, in a group of 8 people. Unfortunately there were no stars visisble due to the snowy conditions. There had been 30 cm plus fresh snowfall that day and it was still snowing when we set off, so Carolis had to adjust his plans to suit the conditions. Nevertheless he found us a great spot, and once we set off it was great fun trekking across the fresh powdered snow. After approx 1hr 20 mins snowshoeing we stopped to have dinner overlooking a fjord, a breathtakingly beautiful view. Carolis made a campfire and impressed me with how he took care not to damage the environment, unlike trips with some other companies. There was lovely homemade soup, cookies and hot chocolate to warm us before we headed back. Carolis was extremely knowledgeable and I was grateful for the photos he shared. Thanks for a great trip!
Star Walk was a nighttime snowshoeing epic adventure! Our small group included four other guests from Austria and the U.S., plus our knowledgeable, skilled, and hardworking guides, Delphin and Karolis. Wandering Owl is a conscientious company that prides itself in creating a special and unique experience for all! Our guides were a joy, and we felt completely comfortable and confident in their hands. Delphin had clearly worked hard to prepare our trip with appropriate supplies, routes, and locations based on the weather and aurora forecasts. Karolis was a great help to the group, tracking with faster and slower hikers. Star Walk is well-suited for both beginners (like us!) and experienced snowshoers. Although the Tromso tourism office lists the effort level as easy, I’d definitely classify it as moderate or difficult. This isn’t just traipsing around a field; we climbed a darn mountain to reach amazing panoramic vistas, culminating in a campfire atop the mountain! We ultimately climbed 200 meters or 665 feet, winding up the mountainside (some parts quite steep) and stopping along the way for stunning photos when the skies cleared. Delphin was a skilled nighttime photographer and made sure to capture our delightful experience in artistic posterity! When we reached the mountaintop after the ~2 hour hike, we built a campfire and enjoyed hearty conversation and hot soup (both vegetarian and reindeer), hot cocoa (made with rice milk!), and vegan cookies. I could’ve stayed for hours, warm in my layers and thermal suit and among nice company, but the weather turned very suddenly with dense clouds, high winds, and sideways snow so we quickly packed up and headed down, or rather ran, slid, and tumbled down the mountain. So thickly covered in snow, it was like pouncing on a mattress. Bring your sense of adventure! We made the right decision to dress warmly in layers, hats, scarves, mittens, snowpants, and snowboots. Wandering Owl provided snowshoes, poles, headlamps, and thermal suits that we put on only after sweating with exertion from climbing and then sitting when we reached the top. The guides also outfitted a sledge with camping supplies that they pulled behind them all the way up, and we helped carry up the food and drink in light backpacks. Of course, one hopes to see aurora on any nighttime excursion, but that wasn’t the purpose of Star Walk, which was set up at a specific location rather than chasing gaps in the clouds. We didn’t see aurora that night, but no matter. We had an epic time, and we recommend Star Walk and Wandering Owl with no reservations!
I visited Tromso solo in January 2019 - booked snow shoeing with Wandering Owl as something to get me out of the hotel room of an evening...ended up being probably the best experience I've ever had!! Delphin was our guide for the night - he met us outside Scandic Ishavshotel in the centre of Tromso (where most of the tours depart from). Delphin immediately made everyone in our group feel welcome, and his genuine excitement for the night ahead was clear! He explained that although not usually an Aurora trip, the conditions that night were perfect and so he suggested we travel about an hour west to Rekvik where we could walk up a ridge to beautiful views over a fjord. He couldn't have been more right! The journey to Rekvik was comfortable and felt very safe. Delphin pointed out animal tracks on the way and we also stopped to look at some reindeer by the side of the road. Once we arrived Delphin quickly set about organising everyone with thermal suits, boots, snow shoes, poles, headlamps, and we each took part of the picnic. Once all kitted up we headed out over deep powder snow fields, watching the moon rise over the mountain. We soon got used to walking in snow shoes and although hard work we all made it to the top of the ridge, stopping for delicious thick hot chocolate and home made biscuits on the way. We made it to the top of the ridge, to the top of a 400m high cliff over a fjord with panoramic views of the mountains and fjords...absolutely stunning under the moonlight. Then..the Aurora!! What a place to see it! clear sky, full moon and such high solar activity! Delphin took lots of amazing pictures of the scenery and us that he sent over the next day. We set up camp here, with a fire, reindeer stew and bread, all made by Wandering Owl's chef. Wandering Owl provide waterproof insulated mats too so you don't get cold! All in all, THE most amazing trip! Although the walk was an exciting challenge for us, it was clear that Delphin was more than comfortable and capable on the mountain which put us all at ease and made for a really relaxing trip. As a solo traveller, I'd say this trip was more like going out on a trip with a group of mates than an excursion, everyone was so friendly! Couldn't recommend more, thank you so much! Boook it!!!!!!!
We went with Delphin from Wandering Owls for the star walk, a nightly snowshoe-hike up a hill - and it really was the highlight of our holiday! We were a small group with similar fitness and attitude, starting the trip good tempered in heavy snow-fall. Very soon the snowfall stopped, the clouds opened, and the full moon lit the glittering powdersnow. Incredible views to the fjords and the snowy mountainpeaks around - wow! It was kind of magical! Even the snowfall that came up again when we sat on the mountain around the fire and had soup, couldn't spoil our spirit, it just was another fascinating part of a fantastic night out. Highly recommended for all who like being out there and don't mind the elements.
This was my best experience during my visit in Norway. We were a group of about 10 people. We all met in the town centre and then we headed off to the place where we would start our hike. Once we we were there we put our snow shoes on and went through a forest. There was a small hill afterwards and that's when it got really exciting. We started seeing something blurry in the sky. It turns out these were the northern lights. As were were ascending, the norther lights started to intensify and also became more greenish. What an amazing experience was to see this spectacle of nature! As we reached the top we made fire and enjoyed a nice meal and company under the stars. On the way back I kept looking at the stars and the northern lights and this is something I would suggest to anyone. Just stop, turn off any lights, don't speak and look up. After a couple of minutes you will have the feeling that you can actually touch touch the stars! I would like to thank Delphin, who was our guide. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have had such an unforgettable experience. Thank you!
The highlights of our trip to Norway ! My expectations were set high, already (considering the ranking online). It exceeds my expectations ! Already the beginning was an experience on itself. It felt like you have the best guides ! The guides that take you on a trip, are all enthusiasts, different personality, but all looks passionate ! Delphin (our guide), takes you on a journey, already before you are outdoor, he has this ability to share his happiness, excitement of how beautiful is going to be what you will see. We got lucky, because after the snowstorm in previous days, the sky was less cloudy, and enables us to walk through the croissant moon light, under a sky full of stars. Going up, it became ever better, a green aurora shape built in the sky, and circle us ! It only motivates us to climb faster, harder, and get closer and closer to it, like a magnet ! Plenty of flying stars went through as soon as we took a break to contemplate it. There is no rush at any moment. We even took a moment to listen to the silence. Impressive ! We reach the top, where Delphin sets up a fire, and we enjoy an amazing soup and home-made cookies ! No regret of choosing vegetarian (even so I am not vegetarian). So tasty ! Finally, Delphin tooks pictures, with the proper quality and set up, so even so our camera could not capture the beauty of the night, we've got our souvenirs ! (not only print in our memory). In addition, you could become the next instagram influencer ^^by modelling there. There is nothing negative to tell how this activity, and company, they deserve there 5 stars ranking ! People, Activity itself, Organization and book, Food are all close to perfection if not perfection ! If you still hesitate to go there, or book with the wandering owl ! Stop thinking, just go, just book ! It is fantastic ! I actually want to go again !!!
I booked this starwalk tour after the day snowshoeing one got cancelled, and now I'm so glad it did. The walk up was splendid : the milky way just above us, the moon on our left and northern lights on our right. Nature was very generous with us. Delphin was a great guide, and you can feel how passionate he is. Highly recommend this!
Snowshoe trekking through the forest in the sparkling powder snow and the stillness of the polar night was an unforgettable experience! This tour was definitely a highlight of my trip to Tromsø; it’s a unique and amazing way to experience the beauty of the Norwegian landscape. Delphin, our intrepid guide, went above and beyond to make sure that everyone in our small group, no matter their age or snowshoe expertise, was warm, comfortable using the equipment, safe and had a wonderful experience. An expert in wildlife and their different habitats, he made the tour informative and engaging as well as great fun. If you’re looking for small well-organized tours, with friendly and experienced guides who are passionate about nature, then this is the tour company for you. Thanks to Delphin and Wandering Owl for a memorable experience!!
The most magical night walk with our lovely guide Delphin; snowshoeing up our very own mountain under the starry sky, full moon and northern lights. Watching the inky fjords from the peak, under the shooting stars with our yummy picnic and bonfire, then walking past a herd of reindeer on the way down, could not have been any more special, thank you!
We went in early March with the hope of seeing the Northern Lights. Delphin, our tour guide, picked us up in town along with two other guests and drove us about an hour north. After we arrived, we bundled up, put on the snowshoes, and began hiking up to a ridge overlooking a fjord. When we got to the top of the ridge, our guide set up a bonfire and we ate delicious reindeer stew and some homemade cookies. The view of the Lights was incredible the entire evening. Delphin was a fantastic guide and made the entire experience thoroughly enjoyable. He was extremely helpful with camera setup, as I am a novice photographer. He also took photos of us and emailed them promptly after the trip. Most importantly, he made sure everyone was comfortable ascending and descending the mountain. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for an adventurous way to try to see the Northern Lights. The whole experience was wonderful and left us with a lot of great memories.
Had one of the best night experience in Tromso with Adrian! He was so considerate and ensure everyone was well-taken care of, and also gave us enough time to admire the northern light! The path he chosen was also just right for us, not too easy nor difficult that gave us the perfect experience of shoewalking under the stars, thank you!
The guide is very competent and considerate. Good equipment, fine food. Wildlife tracks were exciting.
Absolutely amazing walk very energetic at times but worth it and to top the night a wonderful lights show
We did this walk with Adrien. It was a high point of our stay in Tromso. We were given excellent equipment - snow boots, snowshoes, one-piece suit - and driven into the mountains where we kitted up and set out under a half moon and a multitude of stars. Adrien took us into a magical land it seemed, across a frozen lake, through woodland and up onto the low hills that led to the mountains. We saw animal tracks, had a midnight feast over a small fire and then found ourselves surrounded by the Aurora. It was strong that night - our good luck - and we watched for ages. Adrien is a great guide, well prepared, knowledgeable and a good conversationalist. This experience was outstanding thanks to Wandering Owl.
Despite what weathermen said we had such a good time ! We went for a wonderful night with very good snowshoes and very warm clothes ! No need for frontal ligths, the moon and the stars were with us all night long and the landscape was breathtaking ! Fronzen lakes, mountains and fjords all around ! And most of all : northern lights just for us ! But the real good thing of this adventure was our guide Hein ! He is very funny and knows so many things about wildlife, mountains, stars and Sami culture, so interesting !!! I highly recommand this starwalk, unforgettable memories !

The best thing about this experience is that the tour company's guides are all very enthusiastic about making sure you have a good time. With the snowshoeing, they made sure that the group went at a steady pace and there was opportunities for pictures. We walked for a few hours before having a hot dinner that was prepared by our guide. After that, we were able to take in the beauty of the surrounding mountains and the guide pointed out gaps in the clouds where we unexpectedly saw the northern lights. I highly recommend using Wandering Owl for this excursion or any other tours you book due to the professionalism and charisma of their guides.

We had a clear night and could enjoy spectacular views and stunning aurora dances. You don't need to have experience with rackets, but some fitness for the approx. 1 hour climb.
Uiteindelijk kwamen we in Finland terecht.
