After reading many… many reviews, I decided to book with Enjoy The Arctic, and tour guide Jan. This trip was booked for my husband as a birthday present, as he had always longed to see the Northern Lights. We were only in Tromsø for 2 nights and sadly the weather forecast wasn’t on our side and so I wasn’t feeling very hopeful. However, as soon as we met Jan, I knew we were going to see them. He reinforced such positive energy and after a shorter time than expected, we drove out towards the Finiish boarders and were not disappointed and saw lots! Jan genuinely wants his guests to experience the lights, and will go out of his way to ensure this happens. Not only was Jan knowledgable, he was friendly (was like a friend taking us, not a tour guide)! Minibus was warm (not too hot), comfortable and provided us with a bonfire, hot drinks and cake by the mountains. I highly recommend this company to be in with the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights!

Itinerary
Begin your evening tour in search of the Northern Lights with a convenient pickup from city center of Tromsø.. You'll embark on a nighttime hunt for the sometimes elusive Aurora Borealis. Although Norwegian nights are cold and it can take up to several hours to see the colorful light show, the wait is worth it. You're provided with a thermal suit, a snow-side bonfire, and hot drinks and snacks to keep warm along the way. Your 16-passenger tour vehicle takes you deep into the darkness with a small group and a professional photographer as your guide. In addition to snapping your own photos, your guide will take pictures of you under the lights and be of assistance to help with your own equipment, including provided tripods; a Canon is available for a fee. Professional photos taken during the tour are later sent to you via email or social media. After a stop for dinner, your 7-hour tour ends with hotel drop-off in Tromsø after midnight.

When we arrived in Tromsø, I wasn’t optimistic that we would see the lights due to the weather. Jan was great, he was checking locations and also checking with other Guides for updates. We drove 3 hours and crossed the border into Finland but he found clear skies, and snow! We were treated to a lovely northern lights display which was magical. It truly was the best experience for our first night in the city.
We came to Tromsø to try and regain some magic back into our lives after our daughter passed away this year which devastated us to the core. The tour with Jan was absolutely spectacular - we felt it was just what we needed. We were told there was just a slightest chance of aurora happening which also marred by cloudy skies - but just sat telling stories by the campfire with a lovely group of people, lovely hot drinks and delicious blueberry cake- topped off with Jan’s excellent knowledge and enthusiasm was soo fulfilling, it blew us away! He told us about how the aurora works, the stars the constellations, Sami culture and some Norwegian folklore and we loved learning about it. The chase was real, we ended up touring all around the snow capped mountain roads and borders of Norway/Sweden and Finland, looking for the clearest skies. It was on the way back when Jan told us quick jump out now… and we were treat to an otherworldly light show (with pictures) which is now stored as a core life memory! Best wishes to Jan for his friendly nature, relentless passion for making sure we had the best experience and his thorough and detailed knowledge of everything. Thank you Jan for the trip of a lifetime.
Did a tour of the fjords with Wojtek and enjoy the artic. Wojtek was very knowledgeable about the area and took loads of photos. I'll give him 10/10
Yan was an excellent guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and went out of his way to make certain everyone was having an experience of a lifetime. The small group size and spacious mini-bus allowed for an intimate, yet comfortable evening chasing the lights. You can book this family owned company with your eyes closed.
Had Andrei has our tour guide who was the best. Took many pictures of the group, is extremely funny and made the experience the best. I’ve been on other Northern Lights tours but this one has been the best so far. Extremely recommended.
It’s excellent small group max 16 we only had 7 people excellent guide comfortable minibus quality guide it does get cold but they will provide you with Thermal Suits and also make a little camp fire
Last night we did the tour with Jan who was very good at explaining and we found the auroras shortly after stopping (we saw it from 3 places and we were able to take pictures in addition to what he sent us) Beautiful experience! Jan a total genius very grateful for everything! Highly recommended
Whole experience was amazing, Jan our guide was awesome he explained so much about the northernlights, we did camp fire too. The lights were magical, he took nice pics. Overall a very memorable night, highly recommended. Thanks !
Jan was fantastic! He did everything possible to find the norther lights for us and he was more then successful! Jan explained to us where and why he was driving in certain directions. Jan came upon an open field, he stopped and the light show began! It was beautiful! and the more the northern lights appeared the more excited Jan was, ensuring we all had pictures taken with the norther lights in the background! He built a camp fire and for some of the guest - their ever camp fire...tea, cake and small chairs for everyone. Excellent !
What a fantastic experience. We had a booking for the night after our arrival in Tromso, and yet our guide (George) messaged us as we were about to depart Leknes and suggested we go that night as the next day's weather was not going to be good. We took his advice, he even delayed the departure to give us enough time to get ready. Best decision ever. We really wanted to see the Northern lights as we'd travelled 14,900km from Australia to see them. Bingo, George drove till we cleared the clouds and witnessed a brilliant display of the lights coming in, strengthening and finally dancing for us. This was a 5 star event. Can't thank George enough for his patience in helping with my camera settings to help me capture magical images.
George is our guide and photographer. His service is excellent in overall, starting from how smoothly drive his car, how he is quickly respond to our need, to the way he help everybody setting up the camera and manage to ask for photo shoot when we have the brightest Aurora. His other service is also awesome when he lit the fire and provide us with warm drink and good cake. Well done George!!
Did this tour with George..he worked with his team to take us to the best viewing spots for the night. Drove close to 5 hours..took our photographs with the northern lights, thoughtfully provided us with hot drinks and cake, portablechairs to sit on and lit a small bonfire as the night got colder. Had a very good viewing He was patient..answered all our queries, knowledgeable and experienced. Would recommend this 100%
This is an excellent tour but you need to know that it will likely go overtime. We left at 6pm and returned just after 1am. There is a lot of driving as the guide looks for the best places to stop. It was completely worth it as we saw the most incredible skies that night! Our guide, Jan, was fantastic. He is very knowledgeable and professional and did not give up until he found us the best location. Transportation was comfortable and the cake, coffee and tea around the camp fire was a nice added touch.
We booked this tour last minute after cancellation of our original excursion with another company (apparently a technical error), so we were happy they could accommodate us. We liked the idea of a small group and going in a van, rather than a big bus. However, the entire excursion was disappointing. First, the driver was about 20 minutes late for pick up; we only knew because one person who had been scheduled on cancelled tour the night before had his number and contacted him. The seats in the van were cramped. The guide barely provided any information and barely interacted with the group. He kept saying he was waiting for info from other guides to see where to go. The "chase" consisted of only two stops, waiting a long time at each, as well as a rest stop at a crowded Circle K with a line-up for the bathroom and cashier. Although the sky was clear, the Northern Lights were hardly visible through the camera and only for a brief time. Despite the description of the tour, we were not offered the winter gear to wear, and we did not have a campfire; I heard the guide ask one of the 15 passengers if they wanted a fire, but he didn't ask anyone else. He offered a hot drink and loaf of cake as we were standing around the van waiting for the lights. The guide was nice enough to take a photo of each passenger, with (supposedly) the Northern Lights in the background; to us, it looks like the lights were done with AI since they were the same in the photo of each passenger, and much brighter/greener than what we observed. Tour returned at 1:30 am. Honestly, it paled by a long shot compared to the Northern Lights tour we took in Iceland.
Jan was one the best northern light guides ever. He consulted many forecast at the same time to maximize the chances of seeing north lights. Weather conditions were awful but due to his knowledge of the weather and his pursue we were able to reach an amazing spot to view northern lights. He was all the time making sure everyone was feeling amazing. He took great pictures plus his stories are incredible. He really made the experience worth it. 10/10 he is the best and this company is the best
Han went to a lot of trouble to find the right spot to see the lights most enjoyable . Also knew a lot about the science of it all , very friendly made everyone feel at ease
Positives - Guide was on time, very approachable and did his best to find the right spots to see the Northern Lights Negatives Tour Description and Information - Says “small group” tour in 8 seat mini van. There were 16 passengers. - Says thermal suits available but the guide never mentioned it - Says “on board wi fi” to share photos. There was either no wi fi or the guide forgot to mention it. - There is no toilet opportunity. The guide just said to go out into the dark to relieve yourself. - The tour description refers to “after dinner”. There is no mention of anything food or drink related until we stopped about 4.5 hours after started for the guide to set up a camp fire, and hand out packet cakes and tea/coffee. Overall, we saw what we came to see, which was great. However, the tour description and/or guide need to ACCURATELY describe all the details of the tour.
Jan was our guide, stupendous can only describe his knowledge & commitment to finding the Northern lights! He was excellent & I highly recommend this tour & company.
The weather was not really in our favour for seeing the northern lights but our driver/host/northern lights enthusiast worked so hard to chase and deliver an entertaining night. Daniel was a very friendly host and very knowledgeable on the northern lights which kept us entertained as he drove for hours doing his best to chase the elusive lights. He was a great communicator, letting us know when our next stop would be and for how long, where we were heading next and why and the bus was very comfortable. Even though we had multiple stops at services, there were also snacks on board so that we didn't go hungry on such a late night or chasing. It took until midnight for us to see a small display of the lights and then we had a 2 hr drive back to Tromso where Daniel kindly dropped us at our individual accommodations. You can't do much about the weather but Daniel did everything possible to make for a great night and memorable chase. Would recommend this tour.
Erica and Nelson brought us out into the Norwegian wilderness to find the northern lights and we were lucky enough to see them. Worth every penny! We spent about 6 hours on this experience. It was a smaller group so it was a more personal feeling. I would highly recommend doing this if you are in Tromsø
We joined three different aurora tours during our stay in Tromsø, and our tour with Alen stood out as one of the best. Forecasts had initially suggested KP 4 activity, but it dropped to KP 1 just an hour before the tour started, which likely explains why the tour was delayed and began at 8PM. Despite the less favorable conditions, Alen made the effort to drive us deep into Finland to avoid cloud cover, and we were still rewarded with clear views and photos of a KP1 aurora. His dedication really made the difference. He ensured everyone was comfortable throughout, and even after a long night, dropped us back at the hotel slightly after 4AM. The tea was a thoughtful touch, and the Mesterbakeren blueberry pound cake—though simple—was surprisingly enjoyable. Overall, a very well-run experience. Alen is a capable and committed guide, and we would definitely recommend this tour.
Spectacular experience! Andrei or Allan (I’m not sure, I think it was Allan, but it was Andrei who sent the pictures🥴), our guide, did everything on his part to find the northern lights (as this is a natural occurence and therefore, not guaranteed). His knowledge and research paid off and we were able to see this wonderful natural phenomenon. He was very nice, took photos of all the customers and sent them only a couple of days later. Thank you so much Enjoy the Arctic!
Great, our guide was very friendly, kind, and gave us a lesson on the Northern Lights. Even though we weren’t lucky enough to see the northern lights, it was a wonderful experience.
We visited Tromso during the weekend from the 20 to the 22nd of March. When we arrived, the weather outlook was grim. 85-100% probability of rain/snow during the whole weekend. Cloud cover was also almost complete. We arrived at the tour almost certain that there was no way we would see the northern lights in this weather. Thanks to our guide Allen for his knowledge, persistence, and enthusiasm, we got to see much more of the Northern Lights than we expected. It took a long trip to get out from below the clouds, but it was well worth it. He never gave up until we were able to see what we came a very long way to see. Will highly recommend this tour and our guide, Allen.
We were very excited to take this tour. Our tour guide George was very friendly and gave us many facts about the Northern Lights (although not 100% they were all right...). He chose a spot 40 mins away from Tromso and we didn't move the whole evening. The reason was that George believed this would be the best place to see them. It was pretty cloudy, but shortly we started to see the Northern Lights. Weak at the beginning, we managed to see a purple/nitrogen one, and right before we left, we saw the most amazing lights show ever! Multiple Northern Lights crossing the sky and dancing. It took 6ish hours but 100% worth it, trust the process and George. Throughout the evening, we had a bonfire with cake, and George also took professional pics that he shared after with us. Be aware there aren't any toilets, so you'll need to go before the tour. Thank you, George!
We had George as our guide to chase the northern lights. It was a fun trip, with George telling jokes and sharing insights on northern lights throughout the trip. He also shared with us photography tips and a few photos of us taken during the trip. Trip included hot tea and cake. George also set up fire in the middle of the trip to keep us warm and was kind enough to drop us back to the hotel after the trip. It's truly the best northern lights trip! George's enthusiasm of the lights was so infectious that my husband and I went chasing for the lights on our own a few days after and we managed to see it! Thanks George!
Amazing tour and experience! George was an expert and passionate about chasing the northern lights. He took us to clear skies away from the city and we had a wonderful experience viewing the lights. George helped me with the tripod and camera settings which was really appreciated and also took photos of us with his camera. We enjoyed the snacks and drinks provided and the campfire. Thank you George!
It was a truly unforgettable experience. The guides were very friendly, well-organized, and knew exactly where to take us for the best chances of seeing the lights. George also provided us with warm drinks and thermal suits, which made the whole experience much more comfortable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience something unique and witness one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world.
First thing to mention is to make sure you have plenty of time for this. We were fine with a long hunt but another couple who had a morning flight to catch was getting nervous about the return time. We had a prompt pickup outside the ice bar in Tromsø. The full 18 person minibus was cozy but adequate. Thermal suits were stored iabove the seats but no one used them. Our guide and driver Alain mentioned we’d be out for 6 hours as we head to Finland to find clear skies. At first we had low expectations with snow blowing sideways in Tromsø. It only got worse on the road. We even passed a couple of wrecks on the road. But Alain was a man on a mission… he was doggedly determined to find clear skies and good viewing. After about 3.5 hours driving we found a clear patch and got our first glimpse of the lights. Alain took portraits for everyone. After a few minutes Alain estimated we could find more clear skies further along and we pushed on. At the next stop he set a camp fire and passed out snacks. People could sit in the coach to rest or warm up. We had a couple hours to view the lights and watch them evolve. Eventually they calmed down and we headed back. He did manage to spot one more opportunity on the way back. All in arrived back after a total of almost 12 hours! Much longer than expected but it was successful and we were happy. Despite the weather and the wrecks we felt safe with Alain’s driving. We appreciate his determination to keep pushing-on until we accomplished our mission. Notes: We did a toilet stop at a gas station about 1.5 hours in and again at the same place on the way back. After that it was pretty much wilderness area. Most of the viewing stops were little more than a turn out on the side of the road. You could t stray too far due to deep snow. You spend a lot of time in the dark with your back to the road. HI-viz gear could be useful. In the end the auroral activity and weather are behind one’s control. But what set this provider apart was the amount of determination to find the best opportunity.
Great trip. George was very engaging. Had a lot of fun. First spot we headed to clouded over so George hunted down a better viewing location.
Cannot say enough good things about this experience. Our guide I believe was Allen, who was very friendly and made sure he did everything he could to help us see the lights. It was a long initial drive but we were prepared for that. We stopped and saw some lights which we were grateful of regardless, but he suggested going further and wow did we get a show. He built our group 2 fires during some of the wait period as it was very cold. We had a blueberry cake provided which was very good and plenty big enough! Smooth drive back with drop offs. Exceeded expectations on a night conditions were not the most favourable. Thank you!
The guide and the Northern Lights were great, and the small group was really nice too. However, the “pro photos” we received were low‑resolution JPEGs, which was disappointing. We were promised the RAW files, but we never received them.
In Tromsoe we had rain the whole day long. Not a second with blue sky. We didn't expect to see any northern lights... But our guide drove deep into Finland to get rid of the clouds. And we very very lucky. Amazing northern lights rewarded the long drive thanks to our guide and his expertise.
We took the Enjoy the Arctic Northern Lights trip on March 20th - guide was called Alan (hope I heard that right!). The guide really went the extra mile to find us Northern Lights despite it being a poor night to see them. We drove for over 3 hours to Finland to find clear skies. We’ve met people today who went out the same night and saw nothing so we were very lucky. Alan gave us good tips on how to use our mobiles to photograph Northern Lights, we had use of someone in the group’s tripod and Alan took some shots which hopefully he’ll send by email soon. Guide explained the natural phenomenon (good idea to visit Polaria too and see Northern Lights film). It was not easy driving but we felt safe and well looked after. We had a hot drink and snack and there was a chance to have a W.C stop on the way back. We got back to Tromso at 3a.m so don’t plan anything too much for the following day.
George was an exceptional guide! his passion and enthusiasm for the northern lights made our experience unforgettable. Friendly, funny, charismatic - everything you want for an experience like this. George took us to one camp spot and we stayed there the whole night. He was an expert in finding the right place & encouraged us to stay a little longer, which we then saw the lights dancing! To top it off, he is also an incredible photographer! We highly recommend this experience for anyone in Tromso.
Wonderful night, got to see northern lights numerous times, George was an enthusiastic and friendly guide, took gorgeous pics, and insisted we stay which meant we got to see the lights dancing at the end which was really special! Highly recommend!
Amazing experience! Our guide George was incredible. He took beautiful photos and helped everyone that fell in the snow! We got very lucky and saw the lights dance throughout the night! 5 stars! ⭐️
Saw the lights which was an incredible experience. Having our photos taken was a nice bonus but not a necessity for us. Would have loved if we had gotten more than one round of drinks as it was C O L D and one little tea gave very temporary relief. Although the guide said he had suits, I very much got the impression he didn't want to have to give them to us, as he stressed that the suit wouldn't help against the cold because it was the feet that were the real problem. Ultimately no one in our group used a suit. If you are passionate about seeing the lights, I think you will still enjoy the tour. If you have anyone in your group you are "making" go on an aurora hunt, I would consider other tour operators, as my husband came for me, and he had a miserable time. It was just too cold, which is not the guide's fault, but I feel like the perks advertised to help alleviate the cold were not delivered on. Also, pick up was absolute chaos; if there were a sign or something that the guide had, I feel like that could help.
We had a great night on the tour. Our tour the night before had been cancelled due to weather and rescheduled for the next day. Boy did the aurora borealis perform. It was amazing! Our tour director, George, explained and kept us informed as we went through the evening. He loves his job and helping others. He tried to get everyone professional pictures along with helping us on our phones or cameras. He was also quite the gentleman helping if we fell in the snow. We had a great group of folks on the tour with George leading the way that we laughed throughout the night, and really enjoyed ourselves. We got back around 12:30.
We are so happy we booked this tour because we got the chance to see the most amazing view of the Northern Lights! Our guide, Allen, did everything he could to make sure we got the best experience and he truly went the extra mile to do so! I would recommend this to anyone visiting Tromsø and hopefully you get the chance to have him as your guide!
I didn’t realize how elusive the northern lights are but George was an excellent guide . He drove us up and isolated place and within 30 Minutes, we saw the first signs of the northern lights.. it just got better from there.. we saw the dancing light in green and red. He took excellent pictures and even started a bonfire for us.. with coffe, tea an cakes. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and you did not disappoint. I would highly recommend this tour, and if your lucky, have George as your guide!
Allen, the driver, guide and photographer picked 15 of us up at 6pm in the comfortable minibus. It was unfortunately a evening with several layers of cloud and you need clear skies to see the Northern Lights. Allen did his best to drive to areas that may later have clear skies and we drove several hours searching, even ending across the Finnish border but no luck. However, Allen did build a warming fire and we had hot drinks and cakes which was nice. We finally arrived back at 2am in Tromso, for a long sleep. It's a lottery to see the Northern Lights near the end of the season, when nights are cloudy and it's not the operator's fault. It's hard to predict when I booked the tour.
once in a lifetime experience, you won't regret it! the guide was wonderful as well which made a big difference.
The lights were amazing and Daniel was a phenomenal guide! We’d highly recommend it. Just hope the weather cooperates.
Even though we did not get to see the northen lights, our experience was pleasant. The tour guide (Alan) was very friendly and made our experience good.
Alan underpromised and over-delivered. Boarding the bus, Alan asked how everyone was feeling. One woman shouted “optimistic!” He laughed and said “well, heh, I don’t know.” Oh no, is it not meant to be? I know there’s a bit of luck involved, of course. He then said “a lot of people are going inland to escape the clouds, but we’re going to push north along the coast. I have a feeling.” We drove about an hour north along the islands, when all the sudden he skirted to a pull-off on the right hand side. “Quick, everyone out.” And there it was, the first glimmers. This was just the opening act. “We’re staying here, I think the sky is going to open.” At that point, a fire was built, a snack was provided (a whole blueberry poundcake!) and we planted our flag. After 30 minutes, we had a full show - all the colors, all the shapes, dancing. Real northern lights both to the naked eye and on camera. A few other tour groups tried to encroach on our spot, but he got there first and got the best place to sit, walk around, and view. Alan knew something the others didn’t. He worked some magic. I’d trust him with just about anything. He could work on my teeth if he wanted. On the way back, each time another show appeared, he whipped the van to the side and we got out to observe. We did this three more times. Absolutely awesome - fulfilled a lifelong dream.
A great trip, disappointed there were no lights last night (not the driver's fault it was cloudy). Watch the included items, there weren't any winter suits and snacks were basic. We had enough to be warm and dry but only what we took. We hadn't had evening meal so not what we'd expected in food. Not terrible as we'd had a good lunch. Also limited toilet opportunities for ladies on board!
The hunt was a really great experience. Our guide was experienced and took time to explain everything regarding the Aurora Borealis phenomenon. He was also attentive to our needs, providing a fire camp, hot drinks, cake, and constantly checking if everyone was alright. Our night was a cloudy one, but we did manage to find a really dark and secluded place and saw the lights, and we even drove to the border of Finland as a second location and saw them again. Overall, it was a great experience; I would definitely suggest it!
I appreciated our guide, Andrei, giving us realistic expectations before setting out - it was not favourable conditions, and they explained the reasons why and the plan for trying to find the best spot really well. We drove to a first location, and saw minimal activity...Andrei was determined though, and we drove to a second location the furthest North we could go, and along the coastline. After getting the fire going to keep us warm, and being very patient, we were rewarded with a lovely display of the Northern Lights! They danced beautifully and could be seen by the naked eye. We then enjoyed some warm drinks (Roobois tea and coffee) and some cake whilst asking questions about the Aurora, before heading back once the clouds took over.
