The highlight of our trip. We got some lovely photos and videos of the reindeer. If we had to pick one single excursion for our time in Tromso this would be it.

We loved the experience and the reindeer were lovely. Such a quiet and scenic ride through the snow. One small thing to note—it’s nearly impossible to take good photos while the sled is in motion, so make sure to snap your pictures before or after the ride. Still, it was the highlight of our trip and very well organized. Highly recommend for the cozy vibes in the lavvu tent!
Very nice experience of feeding the reindeers and getting educated by the Sami people! A pity that we didn’t get sledded by the reindeers as it was too icy, but nonetheless a great experience off the bucket list
Loved it!!! The best part of my trip to Norway!! A 15 min ride is more than enough, so don't worry if they cut the ride short.
An amazing, once in a lifetime experience! Even though the weather was less than ideal so we had to miss the reindeer sledding, the feeding, the stew and learning about the Sami culture more than made up for it.
The excursion was a success, the pick up at bus station, which was very quick and professional. The bus journey was smooth and quite short. When we arrived at the reindeer farm/holding area, we were met by Inga who was very pleasant and welcoming. We had our safety briefing outing what we would be doing and what we could expect on the day. Unfortunately for us there was insufficient snow for the sledding, but we did receive partial refund. We fed the reindeer, which was quite interesting and all the Sami were helpful and informative. There was a souvenir hut, as you can expect it was quite expensive, but all of the items are too quality. We were provided reindeer stew, which was delicious, a vegetarian option was available. Coffees and hot chocolate readily available with endless cookies. But the best part for me was Inga explaining how the Sami have had to endure oppression in their native lands. Then she sang two traditional and personal Sami songs
We brought our kids to see the reindeer and we weren't disappointed. Weather didn't permit for the sleigh ride because there was too much ice - you could see the reindeer slipping as they walked around, so we were actually glad they canceled that portion - but it was a beautiful day and the location of the farm is gorgeous. Looks out over the water and we spent an hour and a half wandering around feeding the herd. They're really cute, docile and walk right up to the feed bucket. The experience part was fun, too, got a bit of history and a little taste of the Sami culture which we enjoyed. But if you have kids that are animal lovers do not miss this visit. When we asked our kids (8, 11) what their favorite part of our vacation was, both agreed that this was their top excursion. Very fun.
Experience was wonderful feeding the reindeer, learning about Sami culture and the meal. Our sledding was canceled because it was too icy for the animals. I understand, but wish their was some alternative offered. They gave us a prompt refund for this portion.
Despite not being able to participate in a reindeer sleigh ride due to an increased risk of reindeer injuring themselves on ice (The ground was really icy then.), feeding the reindeer herd and listening to stories of Sami people’s customs, language, and history was both educationally interesting and entertaining. Trying reindeer stew in a genuine Sami lodging setting was memorable. By the way, we were informed that a sleigh portion of the original price would be reimbursed. The time went by so fast!
The staff was very friendly and the location has amazing landscapes for the lake and mountains, feeding the reindeer’s was cool… and the stew 10/10
We booked the Arctic Reindeer Sami reindeer sledging through Get Your Guide and found that Tromso Arctic Reindeer were the providers. They were very efficient and we found them at the Bus Station where they said and caught the coach to the location. A simple and clever idea of everyone wearing snap bands and once you are on the sledges then they were removed and took away any problems of who and where you had to be. Always remember that even though the Reindeer are very friendly they are wild animals and treat them as such. Our Sami Guides were very friendly and knowledgeable Would highly recommend this trip
Such an enriching fabulous experienceseeing the reindeer and learning about sami culture, but bring cash to buy things from the sami shop.
A wonderful half day feeding the beautiful reindeer, then a sled ride followed by lunch and an extremely interesting insight into Sami culture by the engrossing Inga.
A really interesting afternoon with some delightful Sami guides
The idea is lovely but sledding was disappointing. For a start all of the sledges were wet and for people that didn’t have waterproof clothing it was miserable sitting in wet clothes. It wouldn’t have taken much to have quickly wiped off the wood. We thought we were going through the countryside on a small trip, but it ended up just being led round with the group of sledges through one big field. The second part we were able to feed the reindeer, but a lot of the reindeer were not interested because they had already been fed by the previous group. The lunch was very tasty and the talk by the Sami was very interesting and informative. We did learn lots and our young guides were great.
We had the best time at arctic tromso with the reindeer. Very well organised trip. We loved the sleigh trip and had ample time spent wandering around the herd before a lovely dinner and Sami stories. Highly recommend
An enjoyable easy day out! The bus leaves from down inside the bus terminal so easy to find. Fed the reindeer then had a sled ride around them. Then ate reindeer stew in a warm hut with hot drinks and cookies too. The very interesting part was the 2 young girls talking about Sami culture, we really enjoyed that part
We spent a great afternoon with Tromso Arctic Reindeer. They transported us from the bus station by coach which took about 30 minutes. On arrival we went into a Sami tent where they told us what would happen. We then went on the reindeer sled which was fun, and then we fed the reindeer. Hot drinks were available throughout. We had a chance to try lasooing and then ate reindeer stew. At the end we went back into the tent where our guide told us all about the Sami culture & taught us how to sing Sami songs. Then we were transported back to the bus station. A great activity which we thoroughly enjoyed!
The tour is well organized. It was fun to get close to the reindeer to feed them and take a leasurely ride in a sled. It was also educational to learn about Sami culture and people. The guide was very engaging. Good tour for yonger kids or elderly. Even though it was a big group, we were split up and there are many different spaces to warm up with tea, coffee, cookies and delicious soup. So it didn't feel crowded
This visit was wonderful! Loved meeting the reindeer and the sleigh ride was beautiful. My favorite part was listening to a member of the Sami sharing her history, songs and culture so generously with us. My five year old was fascinated by it too. You can stay warm in the Lavvu tents and wonder out as you please when there’s down time. The grounds are beautiful and it was definitely a highlight of our time in Tromso.
This day trip was very interesting, fun and informative; we learned about Sami culture and reindeers/herding from a Sami woman (in Tromsø studying at the university) who spoke authentically and well of her culture and was a great tour guide. Thank you to all! The reindeer were super cute, got to feed them for a while :)
Worth doing. Hosts were very informative and friendly. Reindeer were plentiful and hungry. I’d recommend this tour.
Reindeer sledding was so much fun. I chose this adventure through Viator because of the length of the sledding experience. It was much longer than any I had seen. We had fun first feeding the reindeer and then being pulled through a beautiful snowy pastureland overlooking a fjord. Afterwards we learned about the Sami people and enjoyed a lunch of reindeer stew. There was a small gift shop on the property with unique items to remember this day by. This is a “must do” experience.
This tour is all about reindeer and the Sami culture which are inextricably related. The sleigh ride was fine. Feeding the reindeer proved challenging as many of the male animals with antlers could become aggressive. The meal (reindeer stew) was a bit unsettling after having just finished feeding them, but that is what reindeer herding is all about. You will learn a lot about the Sami and even learn to sing a 'yoy' song!
Amazing experience. Must do! The reindeer are super cute and adorable. We had such fun. The guide was informative and we enjoyed hearing about the Sami culture! Highly recommended !
Excellent tour with wonderful Sami guides! Good food(reindeer stew or vegetarian stew option), and coffee, tea and hot chocolate with cookies provided all day! They also had several warming huts with log fires. Feeding the reindeer and sleigh ride were highlights. They might want to stock more in the gift shop--that was limited. Wear long underwear and all your warm gear--it was freezing!
Experience includes nice coach to the tour area. Not that long of a drive from Tromso city center, twenty minutes or so. Once at the tour you will be greeted by the Sami guide. Very good overview of the Sami culture in the past, present and going into the future. Although there are alot of people, they try to make it feel more personalized and do a good job with that. The sledding was for a good amount of time around the grounds you get to feed the herd. Afterwards, you are treated to hot drinks and stew inside by the fire. Afterwards, you are treated to additional information on Sami culture. Unique experience that is worth the price.
An unforgettable experience! The reindeer sledging was magical from start to finish. The reindeer were clearly well cared for, the guides were friendly and knowledgeable, and the scenery felt like something out of a winter fairytale. Peaceful, unique, and truly special—highly recommended.
We loved the experience. The reindeers were beautiful. I wished we could have had more time feeding them. The Sami culture is fascinating. Learnt a lot of new things. My only downside would be the food. We didn’t enjoy the reindeer or vegetable stew. Loved the hot chocolate and cookies though!
We had the 10am tour, nice big warm comfortable coach which takes you to the location, around 30mins drive. Upon arrival we were greeted by our lovely guide in full sami attire, the guide was lovely and we headed straight into a cosy teepee with a fire where they explained how the day would go, we were given coloured bands in groups to help differentiate those who had already completed their sleigh ride. The sleigh ride was fun although its more of a long sleigh train as its all connected its not an individual sleigh for each group which would have been nicer. It was sufficient time on the sleigh not too short they took photos of us at the end too. Afterwards we got to feed the reindeer freely and wander around large field/ enclosure where there are hundreds to feed and interact with, you can stay out for as long as u wish or if its too cold you can go into the teepee for unlimited hot drinks and cookies by the fire. Lunch was at 12pm we tried the veg option which was a bit like a tomatoe/minestrone soup it was nice. Afterwards at 12.45 we continued to gather round the fire in the teepee and listen to sami culture and stories and colonisation, it felt a little heavy for the type of excursion but can appreciate it was real life hardships for this culture. We finished with some traditional sami singing of Yoic which was fun, it was a good tour for what it was just not my personal favourite. Id reccomend doing this tour if you have multiple days but wouldn't make it a priority tour for me personally but definetley if you have time. Let me be clear it was not a bad tour just down to personal preference and I have done reindeer excursions in my home country too but it might be a different experience for someone who has never. Thanks again x
It was absolutely amazing! Such a great experience to hear about the culture and feed the reindeer. Would 100% do it again and very kid friendly
A fantastic and unique experience which I would highly recommend. The tour delivered on everything it promised including a decent sled ride, feeding time, a warm meal and then some Sami experience. Was pretty well coordinated, although I would appreciate some more free time. They were very welcoming with warm food and beverages. It was a slight bit crowded but still very well run. Our Sami guide was fantastic and she was super informative and engaging. We learned a lot and found it to be a good enriching experience connecting with local history and culture.
My family and I had a great time learning about the Sami culture and interacting with the reindeer. I would highly recommend this experience.
The sledging took place around the very large compound that the reindeer were housed in for the winter months. There was an opportunity to get up close with the herd and feed the reindeer and see their personalities come out. There were plenty of tents and cabins with log fires to warm up in through the visit and snacks and drinks laid on. The reindeer stew was really nice. The session on Sami heritage and their way of life was excellent and delivered by two young Sami girls who really knew there stuff and were clearly proud of their roots. To be recommended!
What a great day! Really easy pick up, just met them at bus station and they ticked me off the list and showed me to the coach, 25/30 min drive to place, get there we immediately started feeding the reindeer and I got a few pets in, then did the sledding, the reindeer stew was really tasty and I had like 3 hot chocolates coz I liked them that much, also had like 6 cookies, I really enjoyed the talk about Sami history and culture, Andreas was really lovely and informative and allowed lots of questions, left talk wanting to know even more it was that interesting, I’ve bought a book on Sami history so I can learn more.
Had an excellent time feeding and riding the reindeer along with a very interesting presentation from a Sami woman about their culture and way of life. The reindeer stew was delicious and the huts were very warm with nice fireplaces.
The reindeer are so beautiful! The sledding was a great experience. The hot food and drinks were plentiful. Our Sami leader did a great job for a young guy. It was great to learn the Sami history and culture. Dress as warmly as possible, I’ve never been so cold! Even with an open fire. The only downside was we had a cranky lady who organised us on the bus and the sled. She was very intolerant. From my own experience working in a similar environment, you have to remember that it’s everyone’s first experience and lifetime memories.
Having read other reviews I was very much looking forward to this activity. There were loads of people at the bus station with no clear indication as to where we were supposed to go or who et see etc. Eventually I found someone who checked off my name, gave me a coloured band and told me which coach to board. On arrival we had a quick briefing and then went outside. Those at the front of the queue with yellow bands went on the sled ride first while the rest of us with the same coloured bands went to feed the reindeer. We were given a bucket with feed in but, maybe because this was the afternoon tour, the reindeer weren’t that interested in it. They also had access to the feed in the feeding troughs. It felt like an age before I was told to go and wait for my sled ride. As a solo traveller I was asked if I’d share with someone else but, with 2 people, under a blanket, when you don’t know the other person is too cozy for me so I said no. The sled ride is extremely sedate and whilst fun for a few minutes it got a bit boring after a while. The scenery is lovely but you didn’t need to be on the sled ride to see it. The food that was included was delicious - I had reindeer stew. There was also a talk on Sami culture but the northern lights appeared so I opted to view these instead - they were the highlight of the trip.
This was a great experience. Very well organised from start to finish. All the staff were really friendly. Enjoyed the sledding and feeding the reindeer was fun. We were treated to a choice of hot drinks and cookies and then lovely stew. We found it really interesting to learn about the Sami people, their culture and the reindeers. In my opinion, great value for money and will definitely do it again if /when I return to Tromso.
Great trip, enjoyed a sled ride by the reindeer, followed by feeding them. Then inside for delicious reindeer stew with hot drinks and the Sami cultural talk. Plenty of time to do everything- not rushed. The Sami people we met were very informative and made the talk very interesting. A really enjoyable afternoon out of Tromso.
We had a lovely experience! The tour started with a 20 min bus ride to the reindeer farm. When we got there we went straight to feeding and petting the reindeer and after 30 min the tour guides called us to the sleigh ride. We also had cookies, tea, hot chocolate and water always at our disposal as well as a wc to go to whenever we wanted. At around 12pm they gave us lunch (reindeer stew and also a vegetarian option) which we could repeat as many times as we wanted ;)). After lunch they called us to a little cabin with a huge bonfire to warm us and to talk about the Sami culture (Maria was incredible at telling us about her culture!). Then it was time to go back to Tromsø. We loved every second and wish we could do it again! Really recommend this experience!!!❤️❤️❤️🦌❄️
Fun reindeer feeding, sleigh ride and interesting talk about Sami culture. By chance we also saw an amazing view of the Northern lights. Soup by the fire was nice. Thanks to the guide who sang a Joik for us and shared some interesting information on the Sami and their history.
This tour is an absolute must if you come all the way to the Arctic. You have to see the reindeer, travel in Time Machine back to your childhood, feel and laugh like a child again.Feeding those cute creatures, when they gently push you with their antlers is priceless 😃Sitting by the fire listening to the interesting facts about Sami culture and traditions from a Sami girl was wonderful too,now I can educate my friends. Tons of fantastic photos and videos which look like a fairy tale movie…but most important - emotions and memories we will never forget ❤️
Well organized, didn't need snow grips there. Free hot drinks which was nice after feeding the reindeer. Lunch was very nice and Sami talk informative Scenery stunning
We absolutely loved this place! Really nice scenery and beautiful friendly reindeer. The staff were very kind, my partner proposed and they helped us get some nice photos. Also very educational about the native people.
An unforgettable experience with Tromsø arctic reindeer! The sledding and feeding of the reindeer was so enjoyable (albeit very chilly), and much to the reindeer’s delight, we were generously allowed to use as many buckets of feed as we liked, as well as being allowed to step inside whenever and help ourselves to warm drinks and cookies. The traditional Sami meal was delicious, and eating it whilst sat by a warm fire was exactly what we needed after a while out in the field. I felt so lucky to learn about the Sami culture from one of the young ladies who actually comes from a Sami family! I didn’t quite catch her name (or how to spell it) but I think it was along the lines of Annamarkt (I’m probably very wrong there, I’m ever so sorry!). She was incredible at teaching us all about her culture and welcomed any questions, as well as getting us all to sing along with a Yoik! It was incredibly moving to hear her speak of the importance of educating people about her culture, and I’m so glad I now know more about these beautiful people! I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone considering it. You won’t regret spending the money!☺️
First and foremost our Sami guide Irja was fantastic. Her family are reindeer herders and she was so articulate, full of knowledge and able to manage the crowd with grace and humour (it was shame some people were talking while she was presenting). A very impressive young lady. Hearing a little of the culture, her family's experience in the far north, and the Sami Joik (song) were particular highlights. The reindeer were generally very friendly, although weren't too interested in the food when we were there. Some were very cute which made eating the delicious reindeer stew a little tricky! The reindeer belong to the Sami people and this tour is fully Sami run. In fact some of the money goes to buying the feed for the reindeer which is becoming increasingly necessary due to climate change (and prohibitively expensive for the herders), so it felt good to know the money they did make was going to the right place and people. It was a real honour to be there.
Amazing experience. Worth everything penny. Sami guide was very knowledgeable and funny. Lunch and snacks provided. Very well organised. Reindeer were very well looked after.
Exceeded expectations. The sledding adventure was longer than I expected it would be, fell in love with the reindeer I was feeding, dinner was amazing, and Sami culture discussion was extremely enlightening! We did three excursions while in Tromso, and this was by far our favorite!
For the price of this experience ($310 AUD pp) for a 4 hour tour, I would have expected a small group, relatively comfortable experience. Unfortunately that’s not what this is. Positives - the reindeer were lovely, the setting is snowy and beautiful and the staff were friendly and helpful. Negatives: It is hard to find the start point and there are no signs at the bus station to direct you. We were really stressed walking around for ages, thinking we were going to miss the tour. This is a large coach, squashed in like sardines group. So every part of the tour takes extra time lining up and waiting. This would all be fine if it was reasonably priced. We chose the extended sledding for an additional fee, thinking it was an extra special addition. Actually, the same time was allocated for the whole tour to either feed reindeer or sled. The extra sledding was 1 extra loop around the same empty field, so the second loop was redundant so we paid extra to have less time feeding the reindeer and being close to them. The indoor areas were freezing. Of course we expected it to be cold and dressed accordingly but because of the huge group we spent a lot of time into waiting for everyone to get indoors for lunch, into the Sami culture tent and lining up for the return bus and there was no way to warm up apart from the small number lucky to be next to the fire. The food quality, toilets and number of staff vs customers was all geared to a very cheap, commercialised, large group experience. We were herded around and kept waiting like a school group, and for a ‘4 hour’ tour we got about 10 minutes feeding the reindeer, 30 minutes looping the same field on sleds, 20 mins Sami culture, a weak watery hot chocolate and a bowl of tinned soup. Again this is a price thing - at a cheap price it would have been adequate, as it is it’s a total ripoff. By contrast we did a similarly priced northern lights tour at night, it was colder but you could go back to the bus periodically to get warm, which was great. The food was plentiful and fresh, limit of 15 people so no crowding, staff very attentive and always checking if you need anything, thermal suits for warmth - a completely different experience…..
