Wonderful experience feeding the reindeers and learning about the history and culture of Sami people. Would highly recommend.

It was a very interesting experience, got to learn about the Sami people, their work, origin and daily life. It was nice getting together around the fire inside the Lavuu to hear the stories and have a good time with our hosts. The reindeer feeding was great, and a unique experience. They had coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cookies in between activities to keep you warm. I didnt like the food ( vegan stew, too spicy for me) that much but Im a picky eater.
We went late March, feed the reindeer which was a great experience. The 3 course dinner was basic, salmon salad, reindeer stew and chocolate cake. Hot drinks (unlimited) were provided. The food was okay but not great. The best part of the tour experience was hearing about the North Sami culture back at the main hut (teepee). This was enjoyable.
The overall trip is about four hours long. You spend one hour feeding the reindeer - which is very interesting! Then, an hour eating what feels like an uninspiring mass-produced meal, and then another hour listening to a disappointing presentation about Sami. The fourth hour is spent traveling to and from the camp. Overall, it's a lot of time and money to feed a reindeer.
Was a fantastic experience for our family (9&12yo). Good mix …feeding reindeer, local cuisine, and info on Sami people. Really enjoyed it!
Great experience. The location was beautiful and the hosts were friendly and helpful. It was informative and interesting. I can totally recommend it
Apart from some delays in transport, the actual time spent at the Sami Reindeer Camp was just fantastic. Even though a full coach of you take part - because the heard of Reindeer is 300+ when you come to spending time and feeding them it is easy to find some personal space - although once you’ve started feeding them you won’t be left alone! Great food (although not huge portions) but the quality made up for it. The talk around the Sàmi culture was also friendly, fun and informative Would definitely recommend
It was such a pleasure to see and feed the reindeer, learn more about the Sami people, and eat a yummy dinner. Unfortunately the weather was not great for us, so no aurora was visible, but our guide, Inga, helped us make the most out of our time at the camp. We enjoyed hearing Inga’s personal stories of her own and her families experiences as Sami people, though it was sad to hear of the diminishing population. It was especially fun to hear traditional Sami joiks and to join in on them as well. Thank you for a wonderful experience that we won’t forget! 🦌❄️
Our evening at the reindeer camp was a memorable look into Sami culture. Our hosts were very gracious and informative, sharing stories and traditional joik songs that made the evening very interesting. We really enjoyed the opportunity to feed the reindeer; they are friendly and it was a unique way to start the night. The food provided was a good introduction to local flavors. We were served a smoked salmon salad, followed by Bidos (a traditional reindeer stew), and finished with chocolate cake and hot drinks. It was a nice way to experience traditional customs in a cozy setting by the fire. However, the transportation was unorganized. The pickup was confusing as we couldn't locate the "blue jacket" guides inside the terminal until well after the 5:40 PM designated time. Additionally, the bus for the return trip was quite late picking us up from the camp. If the logistics were more organized, this would easily be a five-star experience.
On Sunday, February 1st, we participated in the activity "Dinner at a reindeer camp with a chance of Northern Lights in Tromsø," organized by Tromsø Arctic Reindeer. The bus ride there provided a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Feeding the reindeer was fun, but not very exciting. Dinner in the tent turned out to be well-prepared. It was a shame that the explanation of Sami culture didn't go beyond a superficial story. The main point was that the Sami were colonized by the Norwegians, with all the negative consequences. A more positive story would have been more appropriate. It's okay to experience it once, but not something to repeat.
200 plus reindeer and wonderful Sami hosts telling stories after dinner - great night out. The vegetarian food was good if you don’t want to eat reindeer!
An absolutely fantastic experience! The staff of the company were wonderful and friendly from communication, to help with an issue, to transport, to guidance and explanation during the experience, and the Sami people involved were a delight, funny, insightful, and we were beyond lucky to have them share their stories and a bit of their way of life. Not to mention the experience itself, amazing interactions and feeding with the reindeer, a very slow and safe but once in a lifetime sleigh ride, and getting to see the northern lights as a backdrop to the stunning scenery. The authentic lodging, delicious food, warming fires and hot drinks, and wonderful stories and songs made this an unforgettable experience!
This was hands down one of the most magical experiences of my entire trip. From the moment we arrived, the setting felt straight out of a winter postcard — snow everywhere, the calm Arctic night, and reindeer all around you. Feeding the reindeer was such a highlight because there are so many of them, and you’re literally walking among them while they come right up to you. It’s one of those moments that feels unreal in the best way. The Sami dinner was cozy, comforting, and honestly the perfect way to warm up after being outside. On top of that, learning about Sami culture made the whole experience feel deeper and more meaningful — not just a “tour,” but something that helps you connect with the place and its traditions. And then… the Northern Lights showed up right when we stepped outside to feed the reindeer. Like… casually. As if they were part of the schedule. It felt like the universe just decided to give us a gift. No “meh” moments at all — this tour is a full 10/10 and I’d recommend it to anyone: couples, solo travelers, families, friends… everyone should experience this at least once.
The most amazing experience we've had while visiting Sápmi. As an Indigenous person from North America, it was an honor to be able to learn more about Sámi culture and resistence here in Sápmi. The reindeer were adorable, the food was delicious, and the stories and joiking were incredible. I recommend this to anyone visiting Romsa / Tromsø in Sápmi / Nothern Norway. Ollu giitu for sharing this experience with us (and apologies if I used any Sámi words incorrectly!)
Great experience overall — efficient, well organized, and a lot of fun. We loved feeding the reindeer, sampling the different foods, and learning more about Sami culture. The bus ride was smooth, though a bit clearer signage at the pickup point would have helped people know where to go. Otherwise everything went smoothly. Highly recommend!
Exceptional experience with Sami people. Feeding reindeer and local diner. We were lucky to see northenlight !!!
It was an ok tour! Stuff were friendly, a lot of reeders to feed, food was good! Lovely spot for pics
Please make sure you do this tour to support the local Reindeer farmers. We had no idea that by visiting & feeding these beautiful creatures, we’re actually helping the struggling farmers who’s herds cannot get to their wild feed because of climate change & ice covering where they would normally travel. They are gentle, funny & adorable animals.
Lots of reindeers to feed buckets of pellets to. Some were a bit rowdy though with imposing antlers that were close to peoples’ faces so not for nervous people/children. Three course meal served in plastic bowls/plates was ok served in large hut with log fire. Short talk by Sami reindeer herder interesting. Northern lights mention in the title is misleading as you simply have a chance to see them because it’s dark and you are outside - nothing more than that. Overall enjoyable.
Fantastic experience. Lovely helpful staff, we loved feeding the reindeer and hearing about the Sami people. Highly recommend
Fantastic experience. The Sami were very interesting and the food was tasty. A great way to spend Christmas feeding the reindeer. Would recommend. Team were very accommodating. Worth every penny!
The pickup was simple and easy with relatively clear directions in the email. About a 40min bus ride brought us to the camp. Brought inside out of the cold for a quick discussion regarding how to feed the reindeer before heading out and being allowed to feed the reindeer as much as you like, which I thought was great, given the time frame your allowed to feed them, you will go through a couple buckets worth. After, heading back inside, awaiting you is an offer of hot drinks and snacks whilst you wait for dinner. The dinner offering was great and fast, the staff were very kind and attentive to those with dietary requirements such as vegetarian, I do not believe GF bread was offered however, for those that are gluten intolerant. However the stew, salad and cake were all delicious. The story telling after was also quite interesting. Overall, great tour and the staff were great!
Loved it! The whole experience was great. There were a lot of reindeers enough to everyone to feed them. Maybe I would suggest to improve the toilets.
Great experience to feed the reindeer and learn about Sami culture! Great Sami host and we even saw the northern lights
While having the amazing three course meal, suddenly interrupted with a call that the northern light were out, we happened to be lucky enough to see some incredible lights, The setting for the meal was just right, with the open fire, the great wood feel of the building. The furs, the raindeer stew was great, and the feeding the remainder was fun, plus hearing all about the Sami culture, overall a fantastic night.
This was a Bucket List destination for me and on my 60th Birthday we booked this trip. First of all, you are not guaranteed to see the Aurora. Feeding the reindeer was fun, but remember they are wild animals. I did get a couple to eat from my hand, but if they are not interested in your bucket of food, don't chase them. I used less than half my bucket of feed. Others were chasing/following them further into the wood. However, as we were doing this the Aurora appeared, and suddenly the Reindeer didn't matter. The Sami's took us back inside and fed us with an amazing tasting beef stew, hot drinks, and cookie's. Whilst we were eating this, the Sami's told us to go outside as it was a very strong Aurora, and Boy! I will never forget it, clear as day to the naked eye. We returned to finish our meal and had a short talk about the Sami People. A fantastic trip with some cracking photos. Glad I booked this trip.
A nice way to see reindeers up close and to learn a bit about the Saami people and their culture - we especially enjoyed the joik (song). We were super lucky to see a little bit of aurora during the visit in the camp.
My daughter really liked the reindeer. I would have like to hear more Sami history. It was just average for me. Other tours that we went on were better than this one.
Awesome experience! The reindeer were so much fun to feed and we got to spend a lot of time doing it. The food was good and hearing about the Sami people was so interesting. Highly recommend this tour!
I went on this tour solo and had a nice time. Feeding the reindeer was fun and made me feel like a kid again. I think that activity lasts too long, so I waited inside by the fire with a hot chocolate until dinner time. The dinner was tasty. The Sami reindeer herder’s story was probably my favorite part, it was really interesting to hear about that job and culture.
The guides provide an amazing explanation, the people are super kind and welcoming, they are open to questions and open to go into the details for your questions. The experience overall was great. I loved that if you are not prepared for the cold night, they can borrow some jackets. I am sorry for the noisy people who were interrupting the Sami guide during the story telling, The amazing cultural information that the Sami people shared was also something very valuable. I totally recommend it!
Nice and kind program, nice people, must have if you love animals and culture. :) The reindeers are cute and a little stubborn, and also beautiful creatures.
This was an amazing experience with my 19 and 17 year old children and my wife. Very well organised, not overly touristy. A short, warm bus ride out of Tromso to the reindeer farm. There, we had so much fun feeding reindeer from buckets. Surrounded by majestic reindeer with big antlers, jockeying for position for their feed. Then into the traditional Sami Lavvvu, a large teepee type structure with a bonfire. Coffee, tea and biscuits. On to the delicious dinner, then the highlight of the evening was hearing Danil teach us about the Sami reindeer culture. Amazing, gentle, insightful, funny individual. Very poignant discussion of the culture being changed by technology, the Norwegian governments pressure to convert traditional lands to windfarms, and the challenges of traditional reindeer herding in the modern world. Beautiful evening.
The most memorable and worth to experience was the Sami talking. It was interesting, funny, lots of facts and so friendly at once. We really enjoyed it. The feeding was nice to try but some of us were a bit uncomfortable between hungry pushy reindeers. The food wasnt bad but the time inbetweenn activities was too long and there was not enough space near the fireplace, all of us 4 were freezing and nobody bothered to change. It would be nice to be in a smaller group so everybody would be able to get warm.
We had a memorable time listening to our Sami guide sharing stories about his life, Sami culture and about the reindeers. The hot drinks and stew provded were yummy. We were also really fortunate to see the northern lights. It was truly amazing!
We had a wonderful time interacting with the reindeer and learning about the Sami people and their culture. It was a short distance from the city and made for a very pleasant evening! Very memorable experience
Family friendly great story. Great food you get to try the reindeer meat for the first time. I didn’t like it I wouldn’t have it again but the rest of my family liked it. Smells too strong for me. But they do have the option of vegetarian. Hot beverages offered. Great fire pit. Didn’t see the northern lights but still worth it. An adventure needs to be done.
This what the most memorable experience of my life meeting the Sami woman and feeding the reindeer and then after it snowed all day we saw the Northern lights for a bit and the food was so good. Thankyou for an amazing time!
Very interesting tour. It started right on time at 6pm. Just 25 min drive to the location. Upon arrival, we had 2 hrs to feed reindeer and take as much photos as we wished. Those who finished earlier, went to the lavvy and had hot drinks with cookies. Then a very nice dinner was served. It consisted of a salmon salad, reindeer stew (or vegetarian option but we did not opt for it) and a chocolate cake. Everything was served very fast and was delicious. From 9-10 pm a local sami guy told us about the sami culture around an open fire. By 10:30 pm we were back to the hotel. Overall experience was very positive.
We loved everything about this night. The reindeer feeding was very fun. They can be quite boisterous at times though. The three course meal was fabulous and then listening to the Sami girls after explain their culture and even joik for us was something phenomenal. Just an added bonus was that the Northern Lights came out just as we were finishing up! Such a fantastic experience!
Very well organised. Hosts very friendly and allowed us enough time. No rushing and allowed to take our own time. We upgraded to a sled ride which was really enjoyable. Plenty of time to feed the reindeer as well. The reindeer are nice and peaceful and enjoyed watching the dynamics between them. Able to go into one of the huts for hot drinks whenever we felt cold. Food was tasty with veggie option which was nice. Sami people really nice told all about their culture and the reindeer and finished with a traditional Sami song (joike) definitely would recommend.
This was such a beautiful activity. Feeding the reindeers was a lot of fun and if you are gentle, you can even pet them. Our guide, Irja, was beyond amazing, with a very nice sense of humor, from whom I learned a lot about her culture. Don't be afraid to ask her questions and enganing in a conversation, she will gladly reply to you. The food was delicious. Special thanks to Irja for sharing with us.
The day before we were looking for polar lights in the wildness but without success. So we booked the evening reindeer program to have one more chance. We were not disappointed! As soon as we arrived they brought us to a cosy tent and offered us hot drinks (coffee, tee and hot chocolate). Afterwards we had the chance to feed the hundreds of reindeer from a bucket of pellet. That was a nice experience. Next came the reindeer sleigh for about half an hour. At that moment came the polar lights and the afternoon become magical. After the ride we had the chance to take pictures from the lights and then we were served reindeer stew with traditional bread. The evening was completed with an hour of presentation of the Sami culture in the lavvu next to our tent. We had the chance to learn a lot about their culture and see their hand made clothes, shoes and bags from reindeer skin. The guides were very nice and helpful. All in all a very nice experience.
I was on that tour the 19th November and I had such a great time! I went alone and immediately I felt engaged with the guides. They welcomed us with a brief explanation inside a Sami tent and then had some warm drinks before heading out to feed the reindeers. This was super interesting since there is hundreds of them and they come an ask you for food! Later we had dinner which is a 3 course meal. Healthy, typical and delicious! There is a vegetarian option but I tried the reindeer stew ;) The last part consists on the Sami culture where our Sami guide explained a lot about both reindeers, reindeer herding and the Sami people. It was quite a complete explanation and he complements it with some objects that you pass around. I would definitely come back, thank you Peter, Tore Toran and Yosef <3
After living in Norway for some years I finally managed to visit Tromsø and experience the life up here. Seeing the reindeers and meeting Sami people was a unique experience and you should try it too. Tor-Andre was more than happy to share his Sami stories with us and teach us how to feel confortable among 300 lovely reindeers. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side but even without being able to see the Northern Lights we had an amazing time. I will return next year and take my picture with reindeers under the Northern Lights.
I've never talked to someone about reindeer for a solid 40 minutes while standing in the dark, cold rain before, much less an 18 year old girl, but our amazing Sami host Ilya (Illia?) spoke with such knowledge and passion about all things reindeer that it kept begging for more details. The whole experience was fantastic. The guides were all very friendly, genuinely interested in the group's experience and attentive to our every need. Special mention to Ilya, who's endearing and natural passion for her heritage and culture really some through. Our bus driver Magne was hilarious. The hungry reindeer were very placid, even in (apparently!) very warm conditions. The food was really delicious, and the campfire smoky, cosy and warm. Even though there was real cloud cover we were still lucky enough to get a brief glimpse of the northern lights, and our guide kept a look out on our behalf while Ilya regaled us with stories about Sami life. There was a real sense throughout the whole evening that our custom was really appreciated as a means for the Sami to share their culture with the world and keep it alive. Our 18 year old super-guide's passion is testament to that. Cannot recommend this highly enough as a wonderful Arctic evening.
We had a great time at the Reindeer Camp. We could feed them and take photos with them. Unfortunately the meal was pretty simple and some things were not very tasty. The stories of the Sami were pretty interesting and the people were very friendly. We did not do the sledding, because of the reviews we read before. They said that the sledding was pretty short (and way too expensive for that) and that's exactly what we were seeing. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights there. That definitely was the highlight of the evening. In sum, it was a great experience (but a bit expensive).
Feeding the reindeer was a highlight of my trip. The reindeer stew (yes, I played with my food before eating it) was delicious. Throughly enjoyed the talk given by the Sami leader. Never knew reindeer antlers could be soft and fuzzy. This is a great value for your money. P
The experience was ok but they booked way too many people for where we went (two coach buses) so it didn’t feel the way it was shown on the picture. Too crowded! Also, the title says chance of seeing northern lights and this was not even mentioned throughout the tour. I know it depends on the weather to see the northern lights but nobody addressed it even. This was totally misleading on the title. If you want to see the northern lights, find a tour that says it is about chasing them and not this one as it isn’t the focus. Food was just fine, light meal. They could have provided a fish option as vegetarian stew didn’t have much in it and I don’t eat deer meat so that was my only option. There were people who did rein deer sledding as well and I had not idea it was even an option when I booked it. It should have been provided as an option. All of a sudden some people got orange bracelets and when I asked I was told I didn’t book it. Well, I wish I had known! The culture experience with Sami people were really good and feeding the rein deer was a lot of fun. These are the only reasons I gave three stars and not one. Overall, it was just fine and nothing impressive. I didn’t see going above and beyond for anything and I felt let down for a few things that I wish I had known before (how big the group was, not even trying to see northern lights, rein deer sledding option). Think you can find other packages for activities that are more clearly defined.
Had a really great time last night at the Sami Camp, I got to spend as much time with the Reindeer as I wanted as I wasn’t interested in the Sledding, I ended up going through 3 buckets of Reindeer food by the time I had finished outside with them! The meal was lovely, 1st time I’ve had Reindeer Stew (needed abit of seasoning for my taste but not everyone has the same taste) and then we were lucky enough to get not 1 but 2 viewings of the Northern Lights while we were there! All finished off with a with a educational Sami talk, looking through the items they carry/make & a Yoik (which we were all encouraged to join in with) Overall a fantastic experience, highly recommend!
