The trip was amazing! We caught a good amount of fish and the views of the Fjords were amazing! The Hermes II is a beautiful boat and the crew was top notch. This was the highlight of our trip!

I saw this beautiful boat on a walk through Tromso and was thrilled when I saw the sign for trips. Being on this historic wooden boat felt welcoming and that was enhanced by the friendly staff and gallery menu. We fished and moved and fished, catching cod and redfish. Truls whistled for the white-tailed eagle as he fed the seagulls. Soon the eagle came and scooped up the redfish offering while we all took video and photos. Truls shared his expert photos after the excursion. His mate, a navigation science student, was fantastic as well, though her name escapes me at the moment. One of my favorite Norway adventures!
We had an excellent morning on the water fishing on the Hermes II. The sun was shining w/a light breeze & 68° in Tromso, Norway. The crew were available to remove your fish, give pointers, & even cook up the cod we caught. Perfect day while visiting the port w/our cruise ship.
Being on the Hermes II was like traveling back in time: the sound of an old diesel engine and the feel of a wooden boat - a very different experience from a modern boat. Absolutely loved it. The crew were brilliant too: they took the time to find out where we all came from, making everyone feel really welcome and valued. Our guide chatted with all of us, and really enjoy answering questions about life in this part of Norway and her reasons for moving here. The food? Probably the best fish cake I’ve ever eaten. The views were as wonderful as you’d get from any boat trip in Tromso but if you only have time for one (I did three) I’d strongly suggest choosing Hermes II.
Amazing!!!!! We caught fish in multiple locations, the crew was fun and helpful. The history of this boat is worth learning.
We arrived late due to buses crashing, the skipper and the crew waited for us and gave us our own safety briefing. We were all shown how and where and when we could fish on the boat. I think all but one man caught fish, with a young man catching 5, my friend caught 4 and I had one (my first ever fish caught on a line) It was bitter on the day of our trip, but the crew provided us with warm fishcakes, hot drinks (purchased). And at lunch time we had some of the fish (cod and halibut) we had caught. We were invited up on the bridge and the skipper who was very sociable went through all of the instrumentation available to him to keep us safe. We had numerous fishing sessions, a tour on the south side of the bay, saw sea eagles, had a very informative talk on the history of the boat. I'd definitely recommend this excursion
Warm and welcoming crew. Happy to assist, happy to help
I had an amazing day on this fishing trip! The crew made everyone feel so welcome from the start, and the boat itself was beautiful and very well maintained. Everything was explained clearly, which made the experience easy and enjoyable for everyone, even those who came alone. The fishing was fantastic — we caught fish and even got to enjoy it for lunch, which made the whole experience even more special. On top of that, the views were incredible, making it a perfect day all around. I would definitely do this again and highly recommend it to anyone. A big thank you to the crew for giving us a memory we’ll never forget!
The Hermes II cruise was one of the highlights of our trip to Tromsø. The boat is beautiful, full of character, and the experience feels very authentic and intimate. What stood out the most was how kind and welcoming the guides were. They made everyone feel comfortable and were clearly passionate about sharing their knowledge and stories. The most incredible part of the experience was being patiently taught how to fish—and actually catching a big cod! It was such a unique and memorable moment. We also want to share something personal: I am Black and my friend is Asian, and even though most of the other guests appeared Caucasian, we did not feel out of place at all. The atmosphere was warm, respectful, and inclusive, which made the experience even more enjoyable. And to top it all off, we saw sea eagles up close—absolutely breathtaking. The scenery is stunning, and being out on the water gives you a completely different perspective of Tromsø. The small group size and cozy setting made it even more special. Highlights: Catching a big cod after being patiently taught how to fish 🎣 Seeing sea eagles up close 🦅 Exceptionally kind and welcoming guides Inclusive and comfortable atmosphere Cozy historic boat with lots of character Warm drinks and local snacks onboard Overall: A truly special experience. We would highly recommend Hermes II to anyone visiting Tromsø.
This was an excellent trip and we throughly enjoyed it especially my husband! The crew were friendly and helpful and it was well organised. I recommend you take the thermal suits they offer you to wear as it was very cold but the suits kept us snug. We got to eat the cod that was caught and had coffee and tea and a fishcake too! The only thing you don't get is your own fishing rod if the trip is full so we had to share the rod between 3 but this was still fine and we all got a substantial go to catching fish!
We went in January. Beautiful weather but wrap up warm. The team and captain were so friendly and we were well looked after. An absolute faultless trip. Was the absolute highlight of our holiday! Don’t visit Tromso without booking this trip!
Our Fjord and Fishing cruise on the Hermes II was easily the highlight of our trip to Tromsø. If I could give them 12 stars out of 5, I would! The Crew & Service: The service was truly superb from start to finish. The crew were amazing—attentive, knowledgeable, and they made sure we had the time of our lives. They truly go above and beyond to make the experience feel special and personal. The Sights & Fishing: The fjords are absolutely stunning, providing a beautiful backdrop for the day. The fishing itself was a blast, and we were lucky enough to catch some incredible, massive Arctic cod. The Best Souvenir: One of the best parts was that the crew gave us fish to take home! It didn't go to waste—we’ve already enjoyed spicy creamy tom yum cod and pan-seared cod with lime. It was so good we even brought some back to London with us. If you are in Tromsø, do not miss this. It is an unforgettable experience with a top-tier crew on a beautiful, historic ship.
We missed the event as the viator meeting location is incorrect as the exact location . Even though we arrive early there is no one at the shop
I rarely write reviews, but it’s more than 6 months since going on this trip and my 13 year old has been so inspired that this is now what he adamantly wants to do as a living! The fishing was really superb, but it was the crew and the way they looked after everybody that excelled. My son not only got fully involved with the fish, but learnt about seafaring navigation and helped drive the ship slightly off and on course. This time with the captain and crew, who went on to explain about being a marine engineer with the coastguard, has him fixated on being the same. I can’t thank the crew enough for igniting an incredible passion that I had absolutely no idea was there. You have made such a huge difference! I expect we will have to travel far and return one day, as there’s not been a day since the trip that he hasn’t talked about it. Absolutely brilliant nurture and inspiration… you’ve literally changed his life. An incredible day … thank you!
It was a great trip, everyone caught some cod, saw jellyfish, saw eagles and seagulls diving into the water. We caught a few big cod to have for lunch, delicious. A great time!
We had the most amazing and beautiful day today with our family and the amazing crew of the Hermes2 !!! We caught a lot of fish and saw the white tail eagle !!!
We had a wonderful half day fishing trip. The captain and 2 guides were excellent, very informative and helpful. We caught several large cod! I’d highly recommend it
The boat is beautiful, well maintained, and historic and the crew is friendly and competent. We went to a few different fishing spots, caught a lot of fish and released some of it (I only got one little fish, not sure if I was unlucky or lacked the technique, but other people were a lot more successful, there is definitely fish down there!). The backdrop of sea and mountains was beautiful throughout the trip. It drizzled a bit on and off but they gave us thermal suits that pretty much protect you from all the elements. We had plenty of fish to eat on board (boiled in sea water, simple but good), and even some leftover fresh fish fillets to take home, for those who wanted it. Hot tea, coffee and juice available too during the trip. Learned some interesting stuff about the boat and fishing industry in Norway. Would definitely recommend for those who like fishing and fish (although you don't have to fish, one can also do it as just a boat trip). I would do it again if I find myself back in Tromso.
Great journey , The whole journey was very interesting, and the clothes provided were also warm and waterproof. The caught fish was also made into a dish, which was delicious
This was a fantastic trip. Our tour caught a whole lot of fish and the crew helped a ton! We had coffee/tea/hot cocoa and the fish cakes were really good. The fish we caught, we got to eat literally just an hour later. The only thing I would mention otherwise is, we didn’t go to any of the fjords.
Superb experience with professional and friendly crews. Managed to catch a cod and a red fish. Fishes were delicious and views were extraordinary. The Hermes II boat was tidy, equipments were clean, crews were attentive. Must pay a visit if you love fishing.
Despite the weather not being the most agreeable, the trip was awesome! They got us on some fish quickly and we all caught some fish! I caught 6! The crew made us all feel welcome and took great care of us! I highly recommend this excursion.
It was an amazing experience! The team was very knowledgeable and nice. It was very nice driving around with the boat and explore Tromsø from a different perspective. We caught a lot of fish and had a nice lunch on board as well as could take some of the fish home.
From start to finish a fantastic morning out. The crew are amazing and the fishing was excellent. They even cooked the fish we caught and we ate this on board. I would recommend this to anyone travelling to Tromso, you will not be disappointed.
The crew was awesome and very helpful!Very friendly and warm. They made sure that everyone had a good time.We catched a lot of fish and of course we ate a delicious and very fresh lunch. An unforgettable experience..the views were like a fairytale.💖
I really enjoyed the day. I was fantastic being on such an old beautiful boat. We ate the fish we caught which was super delicious. Highly recommend.
We went on this trip on 1st December for my birthday - WOW!!!!! Hermes II is a beautiful boat, the crew are just incredible. We were the only 2 Brits onboard but everyone was very friendly. We caught a Ling and Pollock which the crew cooked for us and was delicious. We were also lucky to see 2 Sea Eagles who came down by the boat to get fish. If you do nothing else in Tromso do this! Only about 20 people onboard and just the best time ever!!! Thank you to the Hermes II crew - you are special people :)
It was fun! Friendly crew and we catched some fish. Perfect. Nice vessel, nice crew and the weather was ok
This was the BEST DAY EVER!!! Caught a couple of great fish and saw a white tail eagle. The crew was the best!!! Should have done this 3 days in a row!!! Loved it!!!
Super service on board the vessel, experienced fishermen with great knowledge of the area, perfect equipment.
My first trip was cancelled due to weather and the timely response for the rebooking was without a problem and very quick. Crew was absolutely incredible. Answered all questions I had about anything and everything Tromso and Norway. Even tho it was what I would consider a small group everyone caught fish. Great trip for someone that wants to experience jig fishing or a first time fishing trip. I honestly can’t say enough about the crew onboard.
I had a blast. I didn’t catch anything but I still had fun. So many other ppl did catch big fish. It was so exciting! I was shown how to clean the fish and we ate the catch. It’s a gorgeous way to see Tromsø. We saw brown eagles and white beaked dolphins swam with us on our way back to the harbor. All staff were very nice.
Memorable tour! Great views and so fun to fish on this gorgeous boat. Coffee and fish cakes, fishing poles, provided
A really great activity a must do in my opinion, people from the crew are incredible, the view is magnifique and the fishing activity was well explained and really untertaining. Finally eating the fish you just catch feels rewarding and they tasted wonderful.
Viator did not have the updated Meeting Place, so I arrived at the wring location and, thus, missed the tour. After contacting the tour operator, she authorized a refund, and noted honestly that I was indeed given wrong information. So, though my experience with this tour was unfortunate, I would certainly consider another attempt at it, thanks to the honesty of the tour operator.
Great crew. They helped everybody with the fishing and had great experiences to share. Even had pictures.
Really enjoyed this, especially being on my own riding solo! Straight from the start the crew are chatty, welcoming, friendly and all have a great sense of humour. We were all mixed into groups of 3 for the fishing which was at multiple locations through the trip. Regular stories throughout about the local history and the history of the boat and recommendations for the area and different parts of Norway. Thank you so much for an excellent trip.
We had great time on this trip. We had our 11 month old daughter with us and all of the crew were very caring and accommodating. Caught two decent sized cod and even saw some dolphins. Thank you to the crew!
My husband really enjoys fishing. I don't care for it quite as much as him, but whenever we go on a vacation I always try to book a fishing trip for us and I always catch something! This excursion was no exception because we both caught more cod than we could count and then we got to eat them too! I even caught two cod at once! The ship was beautiful, the crew was extremely helpful and the scenery was magnificent! I tend to get seasick, but I did not on this cruise because the water of the fjords was not rough and the boat wasn't bouncing up and down. It was a very smooth ride. I did take an anti-nausea pill just to be safe. It was very cold and the wind was biting, but if you were dressed properly, it didn't matter. I was dressed very warmly, so I stayed in my own clothes, but my husband chose to use their one piece outerwear for extreme weather and he said he actually felt too warm at times. The crew assigns you to places around the ship and they are right on the spot to add bait to your line and to take off the fish you've caught. The keepers they clean and cook for us, the smaller fish they throw back to live another day or to be caught in the circle of life as food for the seagulls and the eagles that follow the ship. The crew was also extremely helpful in suggesting restaurants in Tromso and food to try. A delicacy is grilled stockfish, which is cod that has been dried, then rehydrated and then grilled. It was delicious and has more protein than any other fish - look it up! We also discovered tea made with black currant syrup that the Norwegians grow up on and again, it is delicious. The thin bread crisps are unlike anything we've had in the states, but we found them at Trader Joe's because we are hooked on them. There are toilets on the ship and places to sit down below deck to get out of the elements. Frankly, the scenery is so beautiful that you shouldn't miss it by staying below as long as you are dressed properly and if you didn't bring something warm enough, the crew will supply you with warm outerwear. If we make it back to Norway, we would do this excursion again in a heartbeat! Thank you to the captain and crew of the Hermes II for such a memorable adventure!
This was such a fun experience! Great way to get out on the water, see parts of the fjords, and do some fishing. Caught several fish myself and the group caught more than enough to clean and cook for lunch on the way back (was delicious!). The captain and crew were so kind and fun to be with. Learned a lot about the ship, the area, the fish we caught, and much more. Would definitely do this again!
It was very easy to find after getting off our cruise. Crew members were making final preparations and were welcoming. This was one of the last remaking 1917 trawlers built to save lives in sometimes dangerous waters. It was in tip top shape with modern equipment and very clean. Caught fish for ourselves and the local fish eagles. AAA
Absolutely fantastic trip on Hermes II. The boat is beautifully restored and has a really interesting history, the crew are so friendly and welcoming and the scenery is just wonderful. We had a half day fishing trip, the skipper found us plenty of fish to catch, some pretty big cod and haddock and even a wolf fish! The crew then cooked it for us…there’s nothing tastier! I’d recommend this trip for fishers and for those who just want to enjoy a boat trip out of Tromso…well worth every krone!
Crew were very friendly, inclusive a lovely to talk to. Caught a good couple of fish which they cooked up and overall had a great time!
My parents (late 70s), my husband and I (early 50s) REALLY enjoyed this fishing/fjord tour. We've been travelling for over 2 weeks and out of all our paid excursions, this was one of our favorites (maybe even our favorite out of all). The fishing, the boat and views were fantastic, but the crew made it perfect! All of them made us feel welcome and special. They did everything they could to ensure we had a great time. We learned so much about the ship and the area. I didnt catch any fish, but other passengers did, and the crew cleaned the cod and cooked it all for us to eat. Best fish I've ever eaten! Amazing to be able to sit on the ship and eat fish that was caught not even an hour before. We have another day in the area and I'm tempted to book it again! We definitely recommend this excursion and want to say thank you to the crew that allowed us to have such a wonderful experience! We will be telling everyone back home about how much fun we had today!
great captain, great view, sea fishing is very surprise event, hours are too short, expect next time.😜😜😜
We stayed in Tromso for 10 days. We booked 3 seperate fishing trips throughout the 10 days along with other adventures, Hermes 2 being the 1st on Tue 12th Dec. Its fair to say we did THE BEST fishing trip of our time in Tromso on this day on Hermes 2. The Crew were superb. We moved about following the fish throughout the trip, going far out into the lake, unlike other trips. Our trip caught 3-4 times more fish than the other 2 trips we went on. One of the fish my son caught was a great cod and the crew gutted it in front of us as we watched it go in the pan - no pre frozen fish like one of the trips we went on!! The fish was superb to eat. You could watch the sonar screen below in the galley, seeing what the captain saw. This was the only trip to stop and attract the wild eagles and we got to video it diving for fish. If you are looking for a fishing trip whilst in Tromso, THIS IS THE ONE TO CHOSE. You will not be disappointed. Thankyou for the experience Hermes 2 - sorry it took me so long to post.
My wife, 5 year old son and myself went on the fishing trip in February 2024 and we all had a great time. The three crew on board were all really friendly, informative and we had a good laugh with them all during our trip. They were particularly good with our son, explaining things, joking with him and showing him photos taken from previous trips. My son really enjoyed the trip and learnt where fish fingers come from! My wife usually suffers from seasickness and was a little worried before getting on the boat. Fortunately the conditions on the day were really nice, with blue skies and calm seas which helped. But as the boat operates within the shelter of the surrounding islands, I can't imagine it gets too rocky out there, well at least not as bad as the open seas. When getting onboard, ewe were offered cold weather clothing. But as we were already well wrapped up we didn't need this. We didn't feel cold at any point of the cruise. But in the event conditions are colder there is a heated below deck cabin you can sit in (where lunch is served). There are two proper flush toilets on board as well. Catching fish on a fishing trip is always in the lap of the gods, so you have to go with the mindset that you might not catch anything. But fortunately the fish were playing ball and we all caught a few fish. My son caught 3 cod, my wife caught 2 cod and another fish (lira?) And I caught 2 cod and also a plaice - which apparently is a rarity for the boat. We spent some time on the bridge chatting with the captain and my son particularly enjoyed being allowed to steer the boat! The captain was showing us the navigation screens and also the sonar used to help detect where the shoals of fish were, to increase our chances of catching. The crew then filleted the fish and cooked some up for us. It was so tasty. You can't get any fresher than that! We were also given fish cakes and offered hot drinks - both included with the package. After lunch we cruised along one side of the fjord and we're lucky enough to see a white tailed eagle up close. The scenery in the area is stunning! Overall it was a great experience and one I'd recommend to anyone visiting Tromsø. The boat is very safe and with relatively high sides, there's no chance a child can fall in (which is no doubt a concern for any parent thinking of booking this trip).
This is probably one of the best trips you can chose of, not only if you are up to fishing but the experience and scenery is one of a kind. The whole crew of the boat are very kind and helpful. We caught a lot of fish and we even saw some eagles. Definitely recommend!
It was a great experience learning how to fish for the first time, seeing eagles, and learning about the marine wildlife in the Arctic as well as the history of the ship.
I had an amazing time on this cruise and we all caught so much fish! The crew was wonderful and very helpful and provided thermal suits for the cold! I would absolutely recommend that everyone do this while in Tromsø!
