Itinerary
Vågnes (North Sámi: Skearronjárga) is a small, traditional coastal village in Tromsø municipality, in northern Norway. It's an interesting part of the Tromsø region, particularly if you're interested in Norwegian coastal history, nature, fishing communities and rural life. Vågnes is more of a quiet Arctic village than a traditional tourist destination. The things worth seeing are mainly its coastal scenery, mountains, small natural landmarks and the surrounding countryside.
Skittenelva (also written Skitenelva, North Sámi: Baikajohka) is a river and historic settlement area on the mainland side of Tromsø municipality, near Vågnes and Grøtsundet. Skittenelva is a lovely area to explore if you enjoy quiet coastal scenery, rivers, old farms and Arctic nature. It isn't a conventional tourist village, but there are several things worth seeing, particularly if you want to discover places that many visitors to Tromsø never get to. This is also the reindeer location where we are going to feed the magnificent animals
It is an interesting mountain and wilderness area east of Tromsø, between the mainland valleys leading towards Oldervik and Tromsdalen. The official Norwegian place name is Snarbyeidet, and its North Sámi name is Snárduidvággi. Kartverket also notes that the Sámi name Áddjikmuotki is used for both Snarbydalen and Snarbyeidet. Snarbyeidet is particularly interesting if you enjoy wild mountain scenery, remote lakes, old travel routes and traditional Arctic landscapes. It is not a developed tourist destination; its main attractions are the natural surroundings and the hiking routes leading into the mountains.
Oldervik is one of the more interesting small coastal communities in the Tromsø region. Its North Sámi name is Leaibbáš. Situated approximately 40 km northeast of Tromsø, Oldervik lies at the head of Ullsfjorden, where the river Oldervikelva flows into the fjord. It is surrounded by steep mountains, with spectacular views towards the Lyngen Alps. What makes Oldervik particularly interesting is its combination of fishing history, old farms, Sámi heritage and dramatic Arctic scenery.

Worth every penny! Ole reached out to us ahead of time to move our booking to another day since we were the only ones booked on our day. This showed me that he really cares as he is the sami owner of the business. The day was delightful and ended in Sommeroy with a delious buffet lunch at the resort on the island. I wanted a small, personal tour and this was it! Thanks Ole!
The best tour in Tromso. We stopped at so many beautiful spots along the fjords. The reindeer were so friendly and beautiful they eat from your hands. We learnt so much about Sami culture from our 2 Sami guides for 7 hours. We stopped for lunch at the most scenic spot with many selections delicious food from chicken to whale . Fabulous deserts too. Loved this tour so glad we went.
I had a wonderful time on the Wondering Reindeer Sami experience. The tour combines so much into one day: meeting and feeding reindeer, learning about Sámi culture in a traditional tent, and enjoying breathtaking views of fjords and mountains. Sitting around the bonfire listening to stories and traditional singing was especially memorable. The stop at Sommarøy for a delicious meal was the perfect addition, and the scenery throughout the day was absolutely stunning. The guide and reindeer shepherd were very warm and knowledgeable. As the only Black traveler in the group, I felt completely welcomed and comfortable throughout. Highly recommend—this experience is truly special.
I had an amazing time on the Arctic Fjords and Reindeer Experience by Wondering Reindeer. I liked the small group size, and we had a nice amount of time to explore the fjords and enjoy the reindeer and Sámi culture experience without feeling rushed. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and he is of Sámi heritage. Together with Sara, whose family owns the reindeer herd, they wore traditional Sámi costume and shared fascinating insights into Sámi traditions, stories, and way of life. Hearing them sing traditional Sámi songs and experiencing culture in a traditional tent with hot chocolate and cookies made the whole experience feel authentic and memorable. The reindeer were calm, well cared for, and not overcrowded. We also had a proper meal at a hotel restaurant, which was a nice break during the day. Multiple stops at different fjords offered breathtaking views, and I especially loved walking on the glacier, it was unforgettable. Overall, this tour is a wonderful combination of nature and culture, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful Arctic Fjords and reindeer experience.
A fabulous day. Great guiding, reindeer very friendly and a joy to meet. Great story telling, scenery fabulous and food fantastic.
We did the reindeer feeding and snowshoe experience (we are 65 & 70yo). Bus picked up/returned to bus station as it is a 1/2 ride to site. We got to feed the reindeers and had a one-on-one conversation with Daniel, a Sami, who was so charming and friendly and explained the Sami way of life and taking care of the herd, he is a sweetheart! The snow shoeing was a perfect pace, stopping a few times for pictures, storytelling by our guides Zoe and Elvis who were both knowledgeable and kind and some hot chocolate and cookies. This was followed by a first time for us, reindeer stew, which tasted very much like beef. Don’t miss this, it is a must to book!!!!
We had the most wonderful experience with this tour. Impeccably organized and very informative. It was a pleasure to explore the surroundings of Tromsø and to get so many highly interesting information about the Sami, their culture and way of life. Our guide and driver Ule was so nice and competent! He made the drive highly interesting, we felt always safe with him. His friend, the reindeer herder, was very friendly and it was great that he gave us so many highly interesting insights into Sami culture. This tour is unforgettable, don't miss it! Highly recommended!
This was such a fantastic experience and offered a lovely glimpse into the lives of a local Sami family on their reindeer farm. Our guides were so warm, friendly and helpful, It was a truly authentic experience, with Reiulf and his daughter sharing some fantastic stories along the way. The experience was well rounded and offered a lovely mix of scenic drives, time feeding the reindeer and learning about Sami culture, and a lovely lunch at a hotel in Sommarøy. I’d absolutely recommend this experience for anyone looking for an authentic experience.
A lovely day on what is a small personalised trip with original Sami Driver/Host. Plenty of stops to take in the scenery and take photos, nice lunch stop, and a nice way to spend the day.
This has been one of the best trips we have taken! Our tour guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. We drove West towards the beach, stopping at various Fjords and picturesque locations. We then stopped at the Reindeer Farm, where we fed reindeers and warmed up in the Sami traditional tent. We were provided with coffee / tea / hot chocolate and learnt about the Sami culture, the traditional attire and the difference between Sami People. Our guide also sang joiks, Sami traditional songs. This was an experience in itself, very informative and interesting. We then drove to Sommaroy, stopping along the way at more picturesque spots. We had a buffet-style lunch in Sommaroy before returning back to Tromso. We were a small group (approx 15 people) which was great. We enjoyed the trip very much and would wholeheartedly recommend it!
Don’t even bother looking at other tours in Tromso - this is the best one! Our guide was knowledgeable, interesting, fun, and engaging. He first took us to a few fjord photo spots that were breathtaking - places big busses can’t get to. He talked about Norwegian and Sami culture and gave a rich history of the area. Then we went to his friend’s reindeer pasture and fed the adorable reindeer for about an hour. We then went inside for fire and hot drinks & cookies to learn more about the Sami traditions. He drove us to the Sommarøy islands and we were in awe! So beautiful. Lunch was at a hotel and was absolutely delicious, had vegetarian / vegan options as well. We were back in Tromso by 3:30. Such a good day. Just book it.
Awesome experience visiting fiords & reindeer. Learned loads from our friendly & knowledgeable Sami guide. Scenery is breathtaking, culture fascinating & lunch delicious. A great day!
We had the best day, feeling really privileged to accompany our Sami guide feeding his reindeer, listening to his stories and songs in his lavvu then travelling to Sommaroy to see if we could find more of his herd, and enjoy a decent meal at a local hotel. The thing that really stood out was how welcoming our host (sorry I can’t remember his name), family and friends were. It was a real highlight of our stay in Tromso and I can’t recommend it enough.
We can recommend this trip to everyone. Our guide was very friendly, we got a lot of background information on the Sami culture. Although the weather was changing like every 20 minutes, he managed to be very flexible in the planning, giving us a wonderful experience Feeding the reindeer was a very nice experience
Plenty of stops to see lovely scenery made even better as we were lucky with great weather. Guide was pleasant knowledgable and helpful. Plenty of time with the reindeer and great experience in the Sami hut. Great selection of food at the hotel. Would recommend.
This was just a delightful journey through the stunning fjords, feeding the Sami family and reindeer. A gorgeous experience
The views were a highlight of our trip to Tromso. Lunch was great for a day trip. Guide/owner also brilliant and authentic, was great chatting to him over lunch.
Great tour led by our captain cum guide, Ola, it was a delight feeding the reindeers, listening to the Sami lore in a cozy Lavu over bonfire and Hot Chocolate and a visit to Sommaroy, all done safely and comfortably.
It was truly amazing and one of the best experiences I have had in my life. The tour guide was Sami local and vey knowledgeable and really passionate about this job. I will always remember this tour forever. I even would like to bring my whole family here in the future so they can experience this unique once in a lifetime experience too! There is a dog that helps with the reindeer. He was also very cute
Very well run and organised. Tour guide was very informative, friendly and kept us abreast of all updates. Reindeer experience was wonderful and we learnt a lot about Sami culture, its history and its people. Food was of good quality too.
Great experience and know abit more about Sami culture. The tour is beauty. Remember to wear warm clothes, and a high probability to get wet.
We absolutely loved this tour, we were lucky to be a small group of six. The scenery was so beautiful and feeding the reindeer was lots of fun. Our guide made it so special by sharing a lot of his Sami culture, history, stories and music. He even made a special effort to stop and buy ice spikes for some guests and we really enjoyed spending time with him. Do not hesitate to do this tour, it is really worthwhile.
We had the most fantastic experience, with Ole, from start to finish. We were a perfect small group of 22 in a mini-bus. We saw stunning scenery en route to the reindeers and were able to stop for photos. It was amazing to get up close to the reindeers and feed them. We then went into a traditional Sami tent for hot drinks, stories and singing. Ole and his younger colleague were interesting and informative. We then proceeded to a lovely hotel for lunch before heading back. Ole sat with us for lunch and we found it fascinating to hear him talk about his life as a Sami. So glad we decided to do this trip as it made our holiday so special.
On a trip to Tromso my wife and I, and four friends arranged to visit the Tromso Artic Reindeer village. From the minute we boarded our coach in Tromso Bus Station we knew we were in for a special day. The Sami lady who met us and came with us on the coach was very friendly and funny. Once at the village it was an amazing expereince. After a welcome talk in a typical Sami tent with a roaring wood fire we went out to feed the reindeer. There were approximately 350 reindeer to feed. They are so gentle and inquisitive. The ones we fed all had their own quirky characteristics. Then we went for a reindeer sled ride around the site. There was a clear blue sky with the moon showing, snow on the hills and mountains and the fjord just a short distance away - magical. Then we went into another building for lunch beside another roaring fire. The final part of the day was to listen a talk about the Sami and the Sami nation by an excellent young lad. It was so sad to hear how the Sami people had been treated in the past but so encouraging to hear how they had maintained their culture and traditions and were thriving. Would strongly recommend this trip.
This tour was so so special. I urge anyone reading reviews of other companies to not think twice and book with wandering reindeer. As others have said, this tour is not " touristy", it is family run and a real experience spending the day with Ole, a Sami. The scenery along the way is breathtaking stopping at different mountains and Fjords. The reindeer herder, again he is Sami guiding us through and teaching us about his herd. We got to hand feed the reindeer as they moved around us. Then into the traditional Sami tent, the Lavvo, to learn more of the traditions and the singing. The bonfire was roaring and we had hot drinks and biscuits. There are boots and suits to borrow if needed. Nothing is rushed, you spend plenty of time with all the reindeer. In Sommery lunch was included with several options, and were large portions. To go with a small group and local you get a real personal experience, to top off as we were driving back to Tromso at about 3pm we could see glimmer of the northern lights. Ole drove out of his way to find us a dark spot to see them. You won't get this at another tour, you will get set times and 100s of people. This was one of the most special tours I've been on. Thank you Ole.
We have just returned from a truly fantastic day with Ole. This tour is really not " touristy" and you learn so much about the Sami people and their way of life. The scenery is breathtaking and we stopped along our route at some visually stunning mountain and fjord views as we travelled along Then we stopped at the reindeer herder, again he is Sami and we saw the traditions of herding. We got to hand feed the reindeer as they moved around us being inquisitive. Then into the traditional Sami tent, the Lavvo, to learn more of the traditions and the singing. The bonfire was roaring and we had hot drinks and biscuits. Ole does have boots and suits to borrow if needed. Nothing is rushed, you spend plenty of time with all the reindeer. On to lunch at a nice hotel, where the lunch was included wirh several options, and were large portions. Again we were able to walk around, taking photos and absorbing the stunning coastline and Fjords. If you want a real Sami experience, with wonderful people, spend the day with Wondering Reindeer, You will have a fantastic experience
What I loved most about this experience was that it was a small group and it felt like a very authentic experience, not overly touristy. Our guide was so nice, and the day was very well structured. It didn’t feel rushed. Getting to interact with the reindeer and learn about the Sami culture was so special! And the islands we visited were so beautiful.
Beautiful experience, with actual Sami guide. Really wonderful experience feeding the reindeers and listening to stories from actual Sami people.
We got lost on the way to the meeting spot, but that was my fault for relying on Google maps and having a terrible sense of direction. Luckily, our tour guide actually called me to ask where I was and led me back to the meeting spot. We left pretty much on time, and hit the ground running. Olle (I might have misspelled it so I'm sorry but that's what it sounded like) was very good at informing us about Sami culture and history while we drove to several stopping points before we got to the reindeer. We stopped at a hotel in Sommarøy to use the restrooms and get some water and coffee. Some people got the chance to put on snow suits, but I felt confident enough in my clothing to not need it. Once we were back in the van, he kept speaking to us about the Nordic and Sami cultures and even spoke a bit of Sami language to us. We got to the reindeer area, which was not fenced in, so it was truly magical to see "wild" reindeer come running down the mountain at the sound of the bell! The reindeer herder (I apologize but I forgot his name) gave all of us food and instructions on how to feed the reindeer safely (be careful with your eyes!). The reindeer were very friendly and walked all around us the entire time, which was truly a wonderful experience! After feeding them for maybe an hour or so, we went into a Lavu tent, where our two guides provided us with hot chocolate, tea and biscuits! As we sat around the fire on reindeer pelts, we were told more about the Sami culture and how reindeer herding works. We learned about our hosts' families and traditions as well. After we finished our beverages, Olle took us back to Sommarøy to eat lunch, which was a very good buffet. We got the chance to speak and meet with other people on the tour, and afterwards, went out to the deck to take some pictures of the beautiful landscape. I truly enjoyed myself, and I would 100% recommend this to anyone who would love to meet some awesome reindeer and learn about Sami culture.
It was a great experience. Although we faced a bad weather, our tour guide could find a good place to take a picture. He provided us with thermal suit so everyone was comfortable and warmth with the weather. It was nice experience in feeding the rain deer and got to know sami culture. The lunch was good. Really recommend this tour.
We really enjoyed this fantastic tour! The Sami guide (apologies we can't remember his name!) was very friendly and informative, and we loved learning about the culture from him. We stopped at some beautiful places on the trip and got to take in the stunning views without feeling rushed. Meeting and feeding the reindeer was a highlight of the tour, with the added bonus of experiencing Sami culture in the tent. Our guide even sang his traditional songs for us which was a privilege. We stopped at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel for lunch. We expected a small buffet but were treated to a delicious meal, with lots of local options. The hotel was also in a lovely setting. All in all, we had a brilliant time and would recommend this tour for anyone wanting to explore the Fjords and meet sweet reindeers!
It was a wonderful experience. Our guide - a real Sami person - was very kind and knowledgable. We had a wonderful day in nature, also spend some time with reindeers and had a great lunch as well. Highly recommended!
The mountain and beach stops are so beautiful and it was really fun to see the reindeer! And the buffet lunch at the hotel was yummy! Overall it was a lovely day to get out and explore :)
Very friendly tour guide. Lot of experience, nice place. Long journey but it was worth foi g! Thank you.
This was a great day trip. It was nice to meet the Sami guide who gave us an insight into the Sami culture. It was lovely to meet and feed the reindeer who, were so friendly. The Sommaroy Islands were stunning and we stopped few times en route to take photos. This excursion was a highlight of our trip, I'd definately recommend.
What a great trip and such a wonderful time with our Sami guide! We felt very safe on the bus ride, even when the weather wasn't the best. The multiple stops along the way made for some great photo options which were unexpected and very much appreciated. Visiting Sommaroy island for lunch was the perfect break during the trip. Feeding the reindeer was an immersive experience that will remain in our memories. The owner was so generous relating the lifestyle of living with reindeer and experiencing our guide and his friend singing Sami songs in the tent was so special.
We cannot rate this family run company higher. Everything was done with genuine care and authenticity. They were punctual and friendly. The vehicles were comfortable with plenty of space for our group of 10. The owner drove us and gave us lots of fascinating insights into the lives of the Sami people and their traditions which are still kept alive. He shared personal stories of his own family and even sang us his and his son’s Sami names. The many photo stops on the drive were breathtaking and we never felt rushed. The reindeer feeding was an absolute highlight- to be surrounded by more than 100 reindeer who will eat from your hand as u stand in the icy tundra is a magical experience. We were treated to a fire and hot chocolate to warm Up in the lavvu and then had a really delicious lunch at a nearby hotel. We loved everything about this and definitely recommend!
We had a great day with our Sami guide. Weather wasn’t the best for Fjord views, but we had fun feeding the reindeer (gentle animals) and learning about Sami culture. Good lunch selection at Sommarøy Hotel.
Lovely trip with lots of stops at different fjords. Nice lunch at the Artic Hotel, u can choose 1 item off the menu (different burgers/soups) Reindeer farm was fun, feeding them and hanging out. Interesting to learn about the Sami culture too.
From start to finish, it was a fantastic tour. We had a lot of fun. On the way to the reindeer, we stopped at some beautiful spots to take photos. The Sami guide and his family were very friendly, and I was able to have a good conversation with him. Since I had been to Iceland and worked with sheep, I found it very interesting to learn about reindeer herding. The guide had told us beforehand that there might not be many reindeer, because the temperatures were too warm, and the reindeer were able to find enough food in the mountains. I'm not sure what it's like with a bigger herd, but seeing about 20 reindeer was more than enough, and we got to experience them up close. Conclusion: The guide and his family put great care into treating their animals well. The reindeer roam freely without fences and decide for themselves whether to stay or leave. That’s exactly how it should be!
A friend and I made plans to travel to Tromso to see the Northern Lights. We looked around for daytime activities to fill some of our days as well, and this quickly shot up our wishlist. I knew nothing about the Sami culture prior to this trip, and had never seen reindeer in person before. This tour was charming, enriching, pleasureable and every turn, and something I highly recommend. My apologies if I spell any names wrong here. Our guide, Ellie, kept us well informed about our surroundings and gave us an insightful and in-depth history of the Sami people and how they adapted to life through the geopolitical difficulties of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. She guided our driver, Hans, to stops along the way at scenic points made more challenging by the weather, but they were beautiful. When we reached the reindeer herd, our host, Islo, was extremely welcoming and informative. Getting to actually feed the reindeer is one of the most delightful things I have ever gotten to do. They are truly beautiful creatures. After a while, Islo and Ellie invited us into a traditional tent, whose name I have forgotten, to enjoy some beverages, and they performed some traditional joiks for us. I wish joiking would catch on in more cultures. After that, we started to make our way back, stopping at a restaurant for a delicious buffet lunch. It was a very snowy day, but Hans was professional at every turn. All in all, this was an experience I highly recommend.
Beautiful drive, charming animals and a lovely glance into Sami culture. Bonus that the arctic suits are provided. And the lunch was tasty!
Booked this activity specifically because it included several stops on the way to the reindeer to take in the beautiful Norwegian landscapes. When clear, the fjords and snowy mountains make for breathtaking scenery. It was a nice bonus to what was already a great excursion. The reindeer were so friendly - feeding them as the snow fell was such a magical experience. Getting to learn about the Sami people, history, and tradition was also enlightening and important. AYCE lunch buffet was terrific. Highly recommend!
A great day out to learn about the Sami culture and the Arctic Fjord's. Feeding the reindeer was a big highlight of the holiday. Thoroughly recommend this tour.
Such a wonderful local tour. Ole was a fantastic tour guide and educated us about the Sami culture and shared folklore about the ancient Norwegian life. We did a fabulous tour of the Fjords, reindeer feeding with Sarah and having hot drinks in a local tent. He also took us to a lovely place for lunch and made some great friends whilst on it. The weather was perfect and Ole’s driving skills were by far safe and secure. Would definitely recommend it .
Wonderful experience. Our guide was a very kind authentic Sami and took us through all the different aspects of his culture while stopping multiple times on the road to enjoy the fiords. Feeding the reindeers was very special and also helped me understand their importance in the Nordic countries. The entire tour is well organized, the group is small, and transportation and lunch were good. You end your day with a lot of appreciation for the Sami people.
Amazing experience. Our guide was wonderful. Very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us to see the most breathtaking views of the fjords. We got to fed the reindeer for about an hour. What a fun experience! We had hot drinks in a Sami tent and learned about the traditions and culture. Our guide even sang to us in the Sami language. Highly recommend this tour and company.
This tour is amazing!! the guides are brilliant and it was very well organised! The reindeer were such characters and the views of the fjords were just spectacular, it was the highlight activity of our trip and is a must do experience, the food provided was also very good
We were lucky to even have the sun come out to help us enjoy the beautiful fjords sceneries on our way to Sommeroy. Of course the best part is hanging out with the herded reindeers and spending some time hearing about Sami traditions. Great to witness the young generation continuing with some of the traditional ways and understanding how to sustain the gifts from Mother Earth in harmony.
