※closed on Wednesdays, Sundays, and occasionally on other irregular days. Many shops in Tsukiji are also closed due to the closure of Toyosu. Toyosu Market (豊洲市場, Toyosu Shijō) opened on October 11, 2018 on the man-made island of Toyosu in the Bay of Tokyo. It took over the wholesale business from the aging Tsukiji Market and provides tourists with an opportunity to observe the market action and to dine at restaurants across its large, modern premises. The huge wholesale market consists of three main buildings: two buildings for seafood and one for fruits and vegetables. All buildings are connected with each other and Shijo-mae Station via walkways. If you are interested to see the Tuna auction, please book Toyosu Market Morning Tuna Auction and Tsukiji Food Tour which can be booked at 5AM.
Tsukiji is the old fish market of Japan! It is full of delicious and unique foods. Locals and tourists alike come to enjoy the great selection here! Be sure to purchase something while you are here to support the local business! Tsukiji may not be available in December/start of January due to requests from the market to not have tours during the holidays. We thank you for your understanding in advance. Many shops in Tsukiji are closed due to the closure of Toyosu. ※closed on Wednesdays, Sundays, national holidays, new years and occasionally on other irregular days.
One of the favorite pastimes of many a visitor to Japan is going on a souvenir shopping spree, hauling in as many amazing goods and deals as possible. In Ginza, people shop for high-end and trendy fashion in its many department stores and high-class duty free shops, while Shinjuku is known for its abundance of massive electronics retailers – Tokyo offers many a shopping spree hot spot.
Sensoji Temple is one of the most famous temples in Japan. It looks back on a 1,300 year-long history and is also famous for its entrance gate called Kaminarimon which stands out through its large red lantern. Sensoji itself is not the only reason why you should visit the area. The oldest shopping street in Japan, called Nakamise Dori is located beyond Kaminarimon and leads to the temple's main hall. On Nakamise Dori you can buy traditional Japanese craft items as well as delicious snacks such as fried mochi (glutinous rice cakes).
Nakamise is the most famous shopping street in Asakusa. The street runs for 250 meters on the main approach to Sensoji Temple and is lined on both sides with shops selling traditional souvenirs, snacks, and sweets. This street is actually on temple property and so it starts and ends with a temple gate: at the southern end is the outer gate of Kaminarimon, and at the northern end is the inner gate of Hozomon. Between these two gates are 89 shops, with 54 shops on the east side, and 35 shops on the west. “Nakamise” is a traditional name given to shopping streets on the grounds of temples or shrines, so this is not the only “Nakamise” in Japan, but it is one of the oldest and most famous.
Kappabashi Street (かっぱ橋道具街, Kappabashi Dōgugai) is a shopping street between Ueno and Asakusa, which is lined with several dozens of stores selling everything needed by restaurant operators, with the exception of fresh food. You will find specialized stores for dishes, pots, pans, cooking utensils, stoves, tables, chairs, signs, lanterns and more. There are also a few stores which sell plastic and wax food samples, used by many restaurants in their show windows.
Monjayaki is a liquid-y, hot, admittedly unattractive dish—but, once you get over looks and into substance, you’ll forgive its appearance and dive in. A thin batter made with flour and dashi (Japanese stock) forms the base, and with myriad combinations of toppings there’s something for everyone. If you’ve never tried it—either intentionally like me, or through not knowing it existed—there’s only one place to go in Tokyo, and it’s literally called Monja Street.
One of best shopping streets in Tokyo, with the well-remained old town “Shitamachi” atmosphere. Explore the nostalgic side of Tokyo through Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street! Yanaka (谷中) is a quiet neighbourhood in Taito ward, east Tokyo. The area is known as old-town district (Shitamachi in Japanese) where nostalgic and rustic vibes are well remained. Yanaka can be accessed from Ueno easily and it’s in a walking distance from Ueno Park. Yanaka is a residential and low-key commercial district where many locals live, and old shops and buildings gather. Yanaka Ginza (谷中銀座) is locals’ favourite place to shop, eat and hang out with neighbours. It’s the most lively part of the district where visitors can feel the true vibes of local activities.

Our tour of Tsukiji and Toyosu were fantastic with Julie! She was so knowledgeable, answered all the questions, engaged beautifully with our teenage kids, and altered our tour a bit to accommodate some of our priorities. Julie even helped me ensure our Shinkansen tkts for the entire week were printed at the station, and she helped instruct us to change our tour date so that more food stalls would be open (switching from not on a holiday). She was a delight to hang out with and learn more about Tokyo from!

What an incredible experience! We went on the tour early in our vacation which helped set the tone for the rest of our Japan visit. Junko was so welcoming and informative, and she knew exactly what route, stalls and food experiences would be perfect for our diverse family group. She also answered general questions about Tokyo experiences, Japanese history and culture, and navigating the train system! It truly was one of the highlights of our trip. I highly recommend this tour.
It was fantastic and catered to my preferences! Taku was great at explaining the history and culture while almost tailoring the tour to my requests.
Great tour. Got to see both markets (old and new). Great food options are available at both market locations
We had an excellent experience with Kaiseki Ryori as our professional tour guide in Tokyo. The tour through the famous Tsukiji Fish Market was fascinating, and we enjoyed tasting many unique and delicious local foods along the way.
May Meiji was our personal guide for 8 hours on our last day in Japan. He made the day memorable and also smoothed out any logistics with our travel arrangements. May has worked with clients from all over the world and understands different cultures. We highly recommend him.
Yuki is an amazing guide who is knowledgeable and friendly; moreover, the tour is perfect for first time in Tokyo
We were hopping for more of a food tour then a shopping tour. Keiji was very friendly. We were most excited to visit the Tsukiji Fish Market, but when we got there it was closing. I appreciated the stores he found for us, however we wish we started the tour at the fish market.
We had a great tour with Nikki - she was great, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We learned and saw a lot. Our itinerary was as follows: 6:00 AM: Meet at Toyosu Market 6:05 AM – 6:30 AM: Toyosu Market (Tuna Auction). 7:00 AM – 7:50 AM: Tsukiji Outer Market (Move by bus) Explore the lively streets and traditional atmosphere. There are about 400 shops! Plenty of foods to try. 8:20 AM – 9:10 AM: Asakusa Senso-ji Temple (Move by Metro) Visit the famous Kaminarimon Gate and the historic Nakamise shopping street. 9:40 AM – 10:30 AM: Yanaka Ginza (Move by bus) Enjoyed a nostalgic stroll through Tokyo’s charming "Old Town."
Kasama san, was an excellent tour guide taking us through the old and new fish markets, very informative and knowledgeable about the area. Especially interesting for my wife, who is a restauranter.
We had a great time with Katsu Hayama. It was a very valuable experience and I highly recommend it. It was the perfect way to explore the market.
You have the opportunity to customize your schedule with your guide. Taking recommendations off guide but then only accomplished visiting two places before time was up. Way too much time using trains getting from place to place.
Our guide Katsu (goreilo) is very experienced and knowledgeable. We are very thankful to him since it was the second day in Tokyo. Very interesting tour with a lot of information and sites visiting. Including tasting some samples of Japanese food and got knowledge about cuisine. Visit Kappabashi street with everything you can imagine for kitchen. Highly recommended.
My guide was great! Very knowledgeable and provided more than just a tour of the market but also a nearby garden and shrine
I highly recommend a private tour guide. Hiromi was kind, patient and lead us to several spots in Tokyo, teaching us how to navigate the metro. She made sampling treats and sushi so fun at Tsujiki. We also visited a beautiful, serene garden, Hamarikyu, and ate lunch at the best tonkatsu restaurant ever!!!
Our tour guide Mr. Toru Higaki is a good guide taking us to some key spots at Tsukiji fish market. We tired 13 stalls recommended by Mr. Higaki such as sushi, sea urchins, wagyu bee, beef bowl rice, egg roll, snow and king crab, fresh oyster, scallop, mochi with strawberry, grill chicken, fried corn with fish meat, grill baby octo[us, grill octopus , grill urnagi, grill tuna and fresh tuna - 4 part of tuna. Toru explain how the food is prepared and served. Highly recommend him if you wish to visit Tsukiji fish market
I had a tour with Nori and she was exceptional. The Tsujiki Market is amazing and a maze! Nori knew all the best places to take me and to try all my favorite sushi. We then visited two shrine/temples, a Kibuki Theatre and she showed me around a luxury department store. She told me all about the shrine -- one even with a place to pray for good eggs! At the end of the tour I realized I left my cell phone somewhere and she simply said, "I will help you." She did not leave until we tracked it down at the temple and she talked to the guards to find out where it was turned in. What a kind and lovely person, in addition to being an expert guide. Thank you, Nori!!
Great tour with Takako, she took us to some amazing spots. We had the best sushi at her secret sushi restaurant and incredibly well priced. We extended our tour and saw some additional sites, well worth the time and money.
I signed up for a tour for the first half of our first day. Fumiko was our guide and she contacted me before we left for Japan and came up with an itinerary for us and even met us at our hotel (which we didn’t realize at the time of booking that it was not real close to the city center). She helped us get the cards we needed for public transport and gave us a great overview of a few different parts of the city and made a reservation for us at a restaurant for lunch. Fumiko helped us use the trains to go to Tsukiji market area, Ueno Park area, the Restaurant supply district, and left us at the Asakusa area so we could look around there at our own pace. She also shared with us some history of Japan that was meaningful and wrote detailed instructions on how to take the public transit back to our hotel. Fumiko was very kind and enjoyable to spend time with. Although we often wished we could spend more time at each place, we really appreciated being able to follow a knowledgeable guide when we were jet-lagged and totally out of our element 😄🥸 Plus, this intro gave us more confidence in getting around by ourselves and going back to the areas that we really wanted to check out again (Ueno Park! Tsukiji market!) Thank you, Fumiko!
Show, our guide, was simply amazing. We got so many information from him and learned a lot on the food, the culture and the history of Japan. 4 hours visiting and we did not see the time passing. A big thank you!
Wonderful guide. Very well informed, giving detailed explanation of Japanese culture, history, and religion. Very articulate and easy to understand. Gave plenty of stops and encouraged frequent breaks for shade and hydration, as well as side tours to extra temples, shops, and sights.
Masa was very helpful in planning the tour in advance and he took excellent care of the particitants. They were inpressed with his knowledge and truly appreciated the experience. Thank you for all your support!
Wonderful private 4 hour tour of the Tokyo fish market and beautiful gardens. Extra attention provided in booking some needed train tickets and getting us acclimated to the subway and other local rail! Thank you!!
We traveled to Japan with four adults, and four children (ages 10, 9, 8 and 7). We have traveled a lot and are not a family that typically uses tour guides, but in this instance had heard it was worth it for the Fish Market. We had a great guide in Toru Higaki. He was very patient and accommodating of the various food needs and desires of our children, while ensuring us adults had a good time as well. :) Highly recommend the experience. We ended up adding on 2 additional hours with Toru, and were really appreciative of all we learned about Japan in the process. P.S. And this was all in spite of torrential rain at times.
We had a great tour with Michie. She was very accomadating to what we wanted to see and do that was slightly different than the description of the tour as we had been to some of the places the day before. We learned a lot about Japanese food culture especially in the fish market and in the Ginza area. Well worth it.
Great tour of Tsukiji Fish Market. Ginza, Imperial Palace exterior, and Tokyo Station. We learned so much about Japanese food culture from Michie. Highly recommend this tour.
We had a wonderful experience at the markets and our guide Takeshi found an amazing hidden spot for lunch. One of our best days abroad ever!
Our tour with Kahori was fantastic. She took us to Tsukiji market to try some of the best seafood ever! Along the way she showed us some neat shops and a hidden shrine that we never would have discovered on our own. Kahori was very accommodating to our family as we needed to make an unplanned visit to the department store to get waterproof shoes as it was a rainy day and our youngest had wet feet. Thank you Kahori!
Shuji was a great guide! He helped us navigate the subway, the Tsukiji market, over to the Shrine and Shibuya Crossing. He was very informative, kind and funny! He helped us customize our experience for two adults and two teenagers and we all enjoyed the day.
I did my tour with Takako it was my first time in Japan / Tokyo, Tokyo is big I had no idea where to start, Takako made it easy and personalized a cool tour for us, we got to hit different spots and explore places I may have not known.
The 4 hour tour around Tsukiji was wonderful! Michie was a great guide and taught us a lot about Japanese culture and food! She was open to adjusting the tour to our specific interests, which made the experience that much better
Takako customized our tour to our liking. We saw so many beautiful views in the city and she shared so much knowledge about Japanese culture along the way. Thank you for a great experience!
Sally was the sweetest! She communicated prior to the tour date to confirm everything and had great suggestions. Sally made the trip to Senso-ji Temple an unforgettable experience and we are very thankful for her guidance and the knowledge she shared. Highly recommend!
Fumiko, our guide, took us on an interesting tour through Tokyo’s famous fish markets. The new Toyosu and the old Tsukiji both merit a visit. But our favourite spot was the vibrant food market in Tsukiji where we could taste fresh tuna, fish cakes, wagyu, miso cod and even strawberries!
Fumiko was an incredible guide! She gave us a fantastic tour of Toyosu and Tsukiji Market, sharing insights about the seafood industry and local culture. In Asakusa, she brought the history of the area to life, guiding us through Senso-ji Temple. Her knowledge, warmth, and enthusiasm made the experience both educational and enjoyable. Highly recommend her for anyone exploring Tokyo!
We really enjoyed our private tour with Izumi. He was very attentive and was very watchful of us, as we are elderly. He was very organized and sat us down for a few minutes in our hotel lobby to go over the tour route beforehand. Our favorite was picking up fresh sashimi at Tsukiji market, so delicious! All the stops were very interesting, but all too brief. We would have liked to spend more time at each place.
Koji was so reliable on prompt. He greeted us with a smile and was extremely polite the whole day. Koji catered to every request we had and was so patient with us all day. Koji was very informative and had even prepared printouts for historical information. We had an amazing day because Koji took great care of us. Thank you.
Unfortunately, our experience with Michio as a guide fell far short of expectations. Michio didn’t make much of an effort to engage with us. While he did accompany us on the metro to the market and helped with some basic translation when we needed to make purchases, that was the extent of his involvement. Most of the time, he simply stood quietly at a distance, leaving us to explore things on our own. Given the cost of the tour, we were expecting a much more immersive and informative experience. Instead, it felt like we got services that could have been easily rendered by our google/google translator app. We didn’t learn anything new about the culture, history, or hidden gems of Tokyo. We didn't learn anything more than what we could have easily found through a simple search online or by navigating on our own. Overall, we were left feeling that we overpaid for an experience that didn’t add much value to our trip. We had hoped for more interaction and insight, but unfortunately, Michio’s approach was not what we were looking for.
Amazing private walking tour with our guide Shuji. We had a really great time with him and he was very knowledgeable with Japanese history. He knew which shops had the best deals and had a great personality.
Our guide Yoshi was great! The tour was a lot of fun and Yoshi was very informative. We learned a lot on the tour and we even got to see a really nice garden since we had extra time!
Excellent program that we elaborated with our guide Kensi. We went to the Tokyo tower and the Hama-Rikyu garden and then to the fish market. Kensi gave also a lot of indications and advise in view of our future visits . Very nice and friendly. A very good experience.
Our guide ISAO was great. He was very informative and knowledgeable. He went out of his way to ensure all our expectations were met. We highly recommend him.
Yasuho was fantastic!! He was very knowledge about the areas and helped guid us through the market. He was very friendly and attentive to all questions. I absolutely loved our tour with Yasuho and would highly recommend a trip with him!!
Sally, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and kind. She did an awesome job. She Knew a lot about the history of the Buddhist and Shinto temples. She also catered it to what we wanted to do.
Kay provided a great customized experience and was able to adapt to some last minute requests as well. She had a wealth of knowledge and was easy going. If you know what you want Kay is great at finding it.
Our guide Hideki was great and so knowledgeable. He showed us around and explained the history of things. He made we enjoyed ourselves and gave us lots of tips which have helped us since. Great tour!
We had the pleasure of having Masa san as our tour guide. He arrived already at the agreed upon meeting area, and greeted us warmly. Over the next four hours, Masa san taught us the history and culture of Tsukiji and Toyosu fish markets. Masa san, thank you for making our tour a memorable and enjoyable experience! Cynthia
Thank you Kenji, lovely tour, we all learnt so much and enjoyed the many sights and tastes. Definitely recommend this if visiting Tokyo
