Itinerary
Step into the heart of Japanese tradition at the Ocharu Tea Ceremony, right across from Tokyo University. This is more than just a tea ceremony—it's a vibrant journey through Japan’s rich tea culture. Start with a refreshing cup of wakocha, a unique Japanese black tea from Shizuoka, paired with a delicious tea cake. This blend of fruity and floral notes sets the stage for the experience ahead. Then, watch as a master brews Gyokuro sencha, the highest grade of green tea. Taste the tea leaves and seasonal wagashi sweets from “Ougiya,” a renowned confectioner that has been creating these treats for generations. Next, you’ll whisk your own matcha under the guidance of a skilled tea master. Using traditional tools, you’ll make and enjoy matcha that connects you to centuries of Japanese tea culture. Finish your experience with a soothing cup of Genmaicha, a blend of sencha and roasted rice from Niigata Prefecture, providing a comforting end to your tea journey. Before you leave, get a certificate and a group photo to remember your dive into Japan’s tea culture.

The tea master was the kindest lady with great english. She made me feel very comfortable even-though I was solo. Her knowledge is fantastic. It is not done the very old school way, but that doesn’t bother me at all and the tea master explains why. I recommend for a lovely experience. Also very easy to find, about 8 minute walk from the station.
It was such brilliant, nice thing to book. Our Tea Master (or more like Mistress :p) Aiko was very, very friendly and explain everything, step after step, telling us interesting trivia. I strongly recommend that, if you like tea, and want to know more about how it's enjoyed ^.^ Tea of course was very tasty, relaxing and refreshing.
Really enjoyed this experience! We learned about various types of Japanese tea. We were able to taste several varieties and learn about how they were made and some of the history and culture we love good tea, so this was a really fun experience
We had a lovely time with Yuna. She was so sweet and caring and made the whole experience so enjoyable. It was a first for my dad and I and I highly recommend the whole experience.
This was a lively and well done presentation of the teas of Japan, their significance, and cultural significance, as well as tasting. We all enjoyed it and would do again.
What a fun time. It was wonderful learning about tea and tea ceremony. Our instructor was especially nice and helpful.
Great English presentation, friendly service, unique Japanese cultural activity, he was very patient with my son. Got to purchase a bag of the tea we tasted. Definitely recommend!
We had a wonderful time at our Matcha tea ceremony experience. Shinichi was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about the history of tea and the different types of teas in addition to matcha. I would have also enjoyed more of the actual tea ceremony itself because it was only partially demonstrated. Other than that I highlyl recommend it to anyone interested in tea!
Being in Japan, we wanted to learn about tea. This was very interactive and fun. One of the 4 teas we tried was Matcha, where we learned how to make it and the traditional ceremony. It was a small group, and everyone joined in the fun.
Great experience. At this location you can sit on a chair which we needed. We learned so much and got to experience the ceremony and many types of teas.
The excursion was disappointing. We expected a traditional ceremony with an education about the traditions. Instead,, we were served tea while sitting at a table. . We brought white socks and were prepared to bow then sit on cushions. It was extremely difficult to understand the hostess.
Really interesting tea ceremony and tasting with a tea master. We tried different teas and made macha. Overall, I prefer a strong Assam (or maybe a Barrys), but it was good to experience some very different types of tea, and Yoko was really knowledgeable. Located opposite Tokyo University, which we walked through on our way to Ueno Park afterwards. We tr
Traditional and modern explanation.Very pleasant tea master. not tradional Matsui material. xxxxxxxxx
It was wonderful experience I'm really happy and enjoying. Thanks a kot for everything. I'm happy...
This experience is unique .We learn he different teas from Japan we try them learn the temperature of the water to brew the tea .Amazing our instructor was very knowledgeable we really enjoyed and we recommend this activity…
I had a great experience! My tea master was very knowledgeable and helped me get the best possible experience, thank you!
Very informative, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Appreciated the experience! Arigatō
Very fun experience with great tea. Would recommend to anyone traveling with family. We had a great time and learned a lot about the teas that we were drinking.
A peaceful and inspiring tea ceremony experience today, learning the essence of tea, enjoying different flavors, and being guided by a master with such a relaxed style and beautiful singing. A truly lovely experience.
A fun experience with good background on various tea options. The guide spoke excellent English and provided helpful background. Setting is more modern overall, so best for folks that enjoy tea and want more variety than formality.
We felt very welcome from arrival to leaving and greatly enjoyed the experience. We drank, ate and learned about Japanese tea and ceremonies- including some delicious surprises.
We did not expect how wonderful this would be! We learned so much and really enjoyed making matcha ourselves! Thank you so much for an amazing time.
Lovely tea ceremony with multiple teas to sample, history and information about each, a matcha making experience with a deliciously paired sweet. We had a great time and would definitely recommend for a great overview of Japanese tea.
We liked it a lot. Didn’t know what to expect but we learned a lot. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about Japanese culture.
Very lovely lady, wonderful experience, nice end to our trip to Japan . Wish we had more time to try some of the other tours
It is located across the street from Tokyo university. The class was so educational and gave me a deeper appreciation for the religions and culture of Japan. It is a hands on approach which we wanted.
Amazing experience! Shinichi-san was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He explained everything really well. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience you won't ever forget! 一期一会
Akiko was a wonderful and patient teacher during our traditional tea ceremony. She was warm, friendly, and smiling throughout the session. I highly recommend booking an experience with her.
The host was very welcoming and sweet and you get to test some of the most popular type of japanese teas while learning about them. Very good value for money.
If you'd like to try different Japanese teas in a relaxed atmosphere with a charming hostess, this tour is perfect for you. It was a wonderful experience watching the hostess preparing the different teas and explaining their properties. (There is also a projection with the information.) Tasting the individual teas was also very interesting, as they weren't the types of tea you'd normally drink. Of course, she also explained the properties of Macha tea, and we were allowed to prepare our own tea under her guidance. To avoid disappointment, it should be made clear that this tour is NOT a tea ceremony, but rather a tasting of various Japanese teas. Don't miss it and enjoy it like we did!
This is NOT the tea ceremony you are expecting. It is more a lesson on how to make matcha. If you expected to get a geisha like woman making you tea while you sat on floor, wrong program.
Just a wonderful, intresting and peaceful hour learning and tasting a part of history. I would highly recommend doing this if you want to have a unique and authentic time while in Tokyo. Everyone was so kind and nice and it really was a fantastic experience.
We enjoyed this tea ceremony very much! We not only got to taste 4 different types of teas, but we also got to learn the history and significance of each at the same time. We were actively involved in the ceremony, pouring our own water and mixing our own matcha. This was a modern tea ceremony, so you're sitting at a table and have your shoes on. It was great to experience this tea ceremony to better understand Japanese culture.
My boyfriend and I wanted a tea ceremony experience, and Ocharu definitely delivered. We had such a wonderful time learning about the history and tradition of tea in Japan and of the individual teas we got to try. Our hostess was really lovely with a calm, knowledgeable energy as she explained to us in English the different temperatures of the tea, how they were drank and what with, and the past and present traditions. The teas themselves were a delightful experience and the shop downstairs provided everything we needed to take the teas home with us and recreate our experience. She taught us how to make matcha and drink it properly, something we have tried again and again at home since and really enjoyed. I highly recommend coming to Ocharu to learn more about Japanese tea making and enjoy some wonderful teas. Thank you for your hard work!
Excellent. The tea ceremony was fabulous. Our tea master was fun (whilst being respectful of tradition) and knowledgeable and made the experience come alive. The group size was just right and didn't distract from the experience. This is a must see and do if coming to Tokyo. We really enjoyed it.
The tea master was very friendly and patient and spoke English really well. We tried 4 different teas, learned about history and the process of tea making and we also got to make our own matcha. At the end we were also able to buy equipment as well. Definitely recommend.
This was not a tea ceremony, this was a tea tasting. The woman who lead this tour did not speak English. We had to read everything off a screen. Very disappointed in the whole tour and I believe that they should refund us the cost of the tour. I requested an English speaking tour and they agreed. I did not get what they agreed to.
Lovely informative activity, multiple cups of different teas and a small sweet compliments the teas.
What a beautiful experience, we thoroughly enjoyed every second of the tea ceremony. It was so interesting and informative and the tea master was excellent.
It was a fun and educational experience. We learned to make 5 Japanese teas. Only lasts about an hour so moves quickly and not boring
The tea ceremony was fun and educational. Learned about 5 different Japanese teas. Only lasts about an hour so not drawn out or boring.
It was a wonderful experience ! Between traditions and flavours but more over it was an exchange of cultures. I really loved it ! I recommend.
あきこさんはすばらしいせんせいです! We learned so much about Japanese tea culture, and got to taste many different sorts. Also, we had such a great time chatting with our host. This experience made our first day in Japan very special and unforgetable :) ありがとうございます!
The experience was amazing! Learned a lot about tea and lady was really nice. We had a good chat! If you like the tea you can buy it from downstairs at the store. You also receive really beautiful certificates of ceremony
Never have thought, that tea can develop such an exceptional flavor. It really was an experience at a higher level. Exciting, interesting, educational re other adjectives I could use! I can highly recommend it to anyone. It made our day just perfect and left us smiling.
We are very happy to get to try authentic tea ceremony in Tokyo. We thought we do not get to experince a Japanese tea ceremony since we do not have time to go to Kyoto. But this place had a great tea ceremony with various selection of teas. Highly recmmended.I loved the macha most!
The booked event „tea ceremony“ did not take place. We waited 30 minutes in front of the building. We wasted a lot of time. For this reason we expect that we get the refound immediatly. Never again!!!
A wonderful opportunity to experience different teas, their ceremonial preparation and their consumption. A knowledgeable tea master who was able to share the process in an intimate setting.
The tea ceremony was amazing! The tea master was so knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming! She really made us feel so welcomed and appreciated!
