Itinerary
Asakusa (浅草) is the center of Tokyo's shitamachi (literally "low city"), one of Tokyo's districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa's main attraction is Sensoji, a very popular Buddhist temple, built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries.
**This tour does not include access to the inside of the Imperial Palace** The current Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, a short walk from Tokyo Station. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family. Edo Castle used to be the seat of the Tokugawa shogun who ruled Japan from 1603 until 1867. In 1868, the shogunate was overthrown, and the country's capital and imperial residence were moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. In 1888 construction of a new Imperial Palace was completed. The palace was once destroyed during World War Two, and rebuilt in the same style, afterwards.
Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo's largest and most popular parks. Located a short walk from Shinjuku Station, the park's spacious lawns, meandering walking paths and tranquil scenery provide a relaxing escape from the busy urban center around it. In spring Shinjuku Gyoen becomes one of the best places in the city to see cherry blossoms.
Shibuya crossing is called Shibuya scramble by the locals. It is one of the busiest crossings in the world and home to the beloved statue of Hachiko the dog! Learn about this loyal dog and see the bustle of Tokyo up close! (Hachiko statue may not be accessible the week of Halloween to prevent vandalism)
Tsukiji is the old fish market of Japan! It is full of delicious and unique foods. Locals and tourists alike come to enjoy the great selection here! Be sure to purchase something while you are here to support the local business! Tsukiji may not be available in December/start of January due to requests from the market to not have tours during the holidays. We thank you for your understanding in advance.
Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū) is a shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. Located just beside the JR Yamanote Line's busy Harajuku Station, Meiji Shrine and the adjacent Yoyogi Park make up a large forested area within the densely built-up city. The spacious shrine grounds offer walking paths that are great for a relaxing stroll. The shrine was completed and dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and the Empress Shoken in 1920, eight years after the passing of the emperor and six years after the passing of the empress. The shrine was destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt shortly thereafter.
Akihabara (秋葉原), also called Akiba after a former local shrine, is a district in central Tokyo that is famous for its many electronics shops. In more recent years, Akihabara has gained recognition as the center of Japan's otaku (diehard fan) culture, and many shops and establishments devoted to anime and manga are now dispersed among the electronic stores in the district. On Sundays, Chuo Dori, the main street through the district, is closed to car traffic from 13:00 to 18:00 (until 17:00 from October through March).
Koishikawa Korakuen (小石川後楽園, Koishikawa Kōrakuen) is one of Tokyo's oldest and best Japanese gardens. It was built in the early Edo Period (1600-1867) at the Tokyo residence of the Mito branch of the ruling Tokugawa family. Like its namesake in Okayama, the garden was named Korakuen after a poem encouraging a ruler to enjoy pleasure only after achieving happiness for his people. Koishikawa is the district in which the garden is located in.
Hama Rikyu (浜離宮, Hama Rikyū), is a large, attractive landscape garden in central Tokyo. Located alongside Tokyo Bay, Hama Rikyu features seawater ponds which change level with the tides, and a teahouse on an island where visitors can rest and enjoy the scenery. The traditionally styled garden stands in stark contrast to the skyscrapers of the adjacent Shiodome district.
The Tokyo National Museum (東京国立博物館, Tōkyō Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) is the oldest and largest of Japan's top-level national museums, which also include the Kyoto National Museum, the Nara National Museum and the Kyushu National Museum. It was originally established in 1972 at Yushima Seido Shrine and moved to its current location in Ueno Park a few years later. The Tokyo National Museum features one of the largest and best collections of art and archeological artifacts in Japan, made up of over 110,000 individual items including nearly a hundred national treasures. At any one time, about 4000 different items from the permanent museum collection are on display. In addition, visiting temporary exhibitions are also held regularly. Good English information and audio guides are available.
Sensoji (浅草寺, Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple) is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples. The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo's oldest temple.
Rikugien (六義園) is often considered Tokyo's most beautiful Japanese landscape garden alongside Koishikawa Korakuen. Built around 1700 for the 5th Tokugawa Shogun, Rikugien literally means "six poems garden" and reproduces in miniature 88 scenes from famous poems. The garden is a good example of an Edo Period strolling garden and features a large central pond surrounded by manmade hills and forested areas, all connected by a network of trails.
Yoyogi Park (代々木公園, Yoyogi Kōen) is one of Tokyo's largest city parks, featuring wide lawns, ponds and forested areas. It is a great place for jogging, picnicking and other outdoor activities. Although Yoyogi Park has relatively few cherry trees compared to other sites in Tokyo, it makes for a nice cherry blossom viewing spot in spring. Furthermore, it is known for its ginko tree forest, which turns intensely golden in autumn.
Harajuku (原宿) refers to the area around Tokyo's Harajuku Station, which is between Shinjuku and Shibuya on the Yamanote Line. It is the center of Japan's most extreme teenage cultures and fashion styles, but also offers shopping for adults and some historic sights. The focal point of Harajuku's teenage culture is Takeshita Dori (Takeshita Street) and its side streets, which are lined by many trendy shops, fashion boutiques, used clothes stores, crepe stands and fast food outlets geared towards the fashion and trend conscious teens.
Odaiba (お台場) is a popular shopping and entertainment district on a man made island in Tokyo Bay. It originated as a set of small man made fort islands (daiba literally means "fort"), which were built towards the end of the Edo Period (1603-1868) to protect Tokyo against possible attacks from the sea and specifically in response to the gunboat diplomacy of Commodore Perry. More than a century later, the small islands were joined into larger islands by massive landfills, and Tokyo began a spectacular development project aimed to turn the islands into a futuristic residential and business district during the extravagant 1980s. But development was critically slowed after the burst of the "bubble economy" in the early 1990s, leaving Odaiba nearly vacant.
Shibamata (柴又) is a neighborhood on the eastern end of Tokyo, not far from the Edogawa River which is the natural border between Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture. The town retains its old-school charm from yesteryear and is a perfect break away from modern Tokyo. One of the main attractions to see is the Shibamata Taishakuten Temple not far from the station.
Having miraculously avoided major damage during world wars and natural disasters, Yanaka and Nezu—two of the neighborhoods that make up shitamachi, Tokyo's old downtown—retain their last-century charm. You'll find historical sites such as Yanaka Cemetery and Nezu Shrine tucked away among shitamachi's narrow back alleys, traditional wooden houses, izakaya pubs, atmospheric coffee shops and retro stores selling old-style sweets and snacks. Here you can slip back in time to a slower-paced, more genteel Tokyo.
Golden Gai is said to have started around 1950 when the black market that had arisen in front of Shinjuku Station moved and, in this new area, a number of eating and drinking establishments set up shop. Although Shinjuku has undergone considerable modernization since then, Golden Gai seems to have remained largely unchanged. The alley is narrow and cramped with countless signs advertising the various establishments that line the way. Many of the buildings themselves are made of wood, remnants hanging on from the Showa Era. Most measure only around thirteen square meters (one hundred forty-two square feet). It's a dim, boisterous place filled with the aromatic smoke of grilling meats. Yet despite the nearly endless number of slick new restaurants available in Shinjuku, this little alley continues to draw the attention of foreign tourists. Golden Gai is a popular “un-touristy” tourist spot.
**Only up to the main deck, top deck is not included** The Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower in the Shiba-koen district of Minato, Tokyo, Japan, built in 1958. At 332.9 meters, it is the second-tallest structure in Japan.
Gotokuji Temple, located in the Setagaya ward of Tokyo, is a Buddhist temple that is said to be the birthplace of the maneki-neko, or “luck-inviting cat figurine.” These small statues, which portray a cat sitting up and beckoning with its front paw, have become quite popular all over the world with cat-lovers.
Ueno Park About half a dozen museums, a zoo, a Toshogu Shrine and the Shinobazu Pond are just some of Ueno Park's attractions. Ueno Park is also Tokyo's most notorious cherry blossom party spot.

We met with Kay at our hotel and she was so friendly from the first minute. We really liked everything Kay could tell us about .. well everything. Especially the Meiji-jingū part of the trip was something we will never forget from our tour with Kay. We highly recommend booking Kay as your guide in Tokyo, I promise you it will be a great experience!
Rumi’s knowledge is vast and she showed and told us so many things we never would have noticed or learned on our own. She is truly exceptional!
Our guide Tachi was a wonderful guide! We saw beautiful streets of Tokyo that we wouldn't have seen without her. She was super sweet for our girls, age 11 and 13. We wanted to try special kinds of food, so Tachi took us to little shops with authentic snacks. It was perfect. Thank you Tachi!!
Kris is kind and thoughtful, informative guide.
There are not enough stars in the night sky to praise Show. From the moment I booked about 4 months prior to our trip to Tokyo, Show was in constant and direct communications to plan our perfect half day tour with him. He had fantastic ideas based on our desires and my husband’s mobility issues. He asked many questions to pinpoint what our wants and expectations were. He focused on three locations close to our hotel to maximize our time together actually seeing attractions which were not crowded. He also hired a cab to take us around Tokyo to the sites. (And the cab driver kindly waited for us). Show also asked the driver to drive us around Tokyo and the Imperial Palace and gardens, all the while regaling us with stories of shoguns, emperors and recent history. He taught us about the religions of Japan, answered all of our questions. He was very engaging, friendly, enthusiastic and so very kind and patient. He even got a wheel chair for my husband and pushed his through the gardens we visited. We visited a shrine as well. And the driving tour was most fun - we drove through the famous fish market, no small feat for the driver! We ended our tour sharing a ramen lunch at Tokyo Station which was amazingly delicious and filling and inexpensive! We traded personal histories in a get to know you manner. I cannot emphasize enough how lucky we were to have Show as our guide, and you will be equally as lucky! We are returning to Tokyo next year and plan on asking Show to spend another half day with us seeing new sights, learning new information and just having a grand time together. Show, many thank yous and 🌟s!
Atsushi was an excellent tour on my trip to Tokyo. Very knowledgeable on history amd current affairs made the 4 hour tour very interesting. I highly recommend him. Maurice, Toronto, Canada
A very nice tour. The guide had a broad knowledge of both history and current Japanese society and that helped us understand Japan better. The tour was tailored to our interests and we really got full value for our money. He even recommended a very nice restaurant for the lunch afterwards.
Our tour guide Kenzo was excellent!!! Very happy to recommend him as your tour guide here in Tokyo.
My daughter and I had a great half day with Hiro our guide. Our first day in Tokyo and he made it very interesting and less intimidating than we thought the crowds might make it. I would definitely recommend him and his laid back nature.
I’ve been to 25 countries and 6 continents, and had a wide array of tour guides, but Tak Yoshikawa stands out as one of the finest. He is an immense reservoir of information regarding Japanese culture, media, history, and virtually anything else about the country. His ability to craft the tour around your interests to personalize the experience sets this tour above others I have been on. Tak is an exceptional tour guide, a brilliant storyteller, and an amazing human being. He had an answer for any question I asked, and was incredibly well versed in all aspects of Japanese culture, including Buddhist/Shinto spirituality, Samurai/Imperial history, Post-WW2 cultural transitions, music, movies, books, food, and so much more. I am blessed to have had this opportunity to accompany him through Tokyo, and I cherish the experience of seeing Japan through his eyes.
We had a wonderful experience with Rumi as our guide. She expertly took us around town although the place I had chosen to see were very far apart and in opposite directions We made it everywhere and she gave us good explanation of our visit to Hamarikyu garden and to UENO to visit the Tokyo National Museum where I learnt the Japanese art of wood block printing ukiyo-e and I made a little one for myself. This was thrilling. We also visited a temple in the same area Kiyomizu Konnondo temple.
We had an absolutely wonderful experience exploring Tsukiji Fish Market and Shinjuku Gyoen Garden with Komaki! She was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing Japanese culture and history. Komaki made the entire experience feel personal and enjoyable, like exploring Tokyo with a local friend. We couldn't have asked for a better guide and would highly recommend her to anyone visiting Tokyo!
Our guide, Hideaki Wada was a wonderful addition to our Tokyo experience. He was friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. I had some train issues I needed to resolve and he was very helpful in getting me the help I needed. He gave us a lot of insight into past Japanese culture and how it affects present day Japanese issues and culture. I highly recommend Hideaki for an informative and fun tour.
Mitchi was a wonderful tour guide on our 4-hour walking tour of Japan. It was a great way to spend our first day in Tokyo to help us get our bearings. He reached out before our arrival to customize our itinerary, which ended up including the Nezu Shrine, exposing the Yanaka neighborhood, touring the Imperial Palace Gardens and finishing at the Senso-ji Temple. He met us at our hotel, which made things easy and convenient. We also traveled by train, which was helpful in understanding how to move around the city. Mitchi was considerate throughout, making sure we were moving at the right pace and providing ample time for breaks. As a longtime resident of Tokyo, he was very knowledgeable about the area and history. Overall, we had a wonderful tour.
The experience with Katsu was wonderful! Katsu is very knowledgeable with all the places we toured. Prior to the trip he explained all the stops we would be touring. This is where we went. →Tsukiji Fish market →Asakusa (Senso-Ji Temple, etc) →Imperial Palace We enjoyed all the history and stories of all the places. The fee for the tour was reasonable for the amount of time we had. We also took trains to all these places. I would have definitely gotten lost if we had to do it on our own. Thank you Katsu for a great day!
Wonderful tour through modern Tokyo and exploring its quirky sides
Julie our tour guide, was absolutely amazing. She showed us so many sites and the information was brilliant. Julie took us on several trains and thank goodness shecwas there as we would have been totally lost. Also was able to take us to Happy Pancakes for real Japanese fluffy pancakes - so delicious Julie ensured we would be able to find our way back to hotel after the tour finished at Skytree as we had booked tickets Julie was so accommodating and looked after us so well We had the best afternoon and cannot thank her enough for everything ❤️
Masa was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and thorough. I highly recommend him for your time in Tokyo!
Hideaki Wanda is incredibly friendly, speaks excellent English, and is very flexible and open to changes and suggestions. He is extremely knowledgeable and does a wonderful job guiding you throughout the experience, making sure you feel comfortable and well taken care of. Most importantly, he has such a wonderful energy that makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and genuinely lovely guide!
This tour was a definite highlight of our family trip to Japan! Mura was an exceptional guide, he was warm, personable and knowledgeable. We appreciated that he took the time to understand our family's needs and was flexible as to the approach and itinerary on the day. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and didn't want our time with Mura to end! In fact I've recommended him to our extended family who are soon to travel to Tokyo. Thank you again Mura, we hope to meet again one day! Angela, Chris, Caleb, Immy and Kayla
Our guide Sam was very, very friendly, professional and well prepared. He had the right pace, explained a lot and took us to different places around Tokyo. It was a very nice experience and we highly recommend him.
We had a wonderful tour today by Rumi. She was incredibly welcoming and polite and spoke English very well. She took us through all the Tokyo highlights and added flavour to them by explaining the origin and customs the Japanese have at shrines and temples. Rumi, thank you for this wonderful tour! Would recommend!
We had a wonderful half-day tour with Seizo! He was extremely attentive and thoughtful throughout the visit. He shared not only the history of the places we visited, but also recent stories and interesting anecdotes that really brought Tokyo to life. He showed us the proper way to enter and behave at temples and shrines ( not the same !), and clearly explained how Buddhism and Shinto coexist in Japan. He even took a little detour to show us a nice shop full of maneki-neko at our request. We also had lunch together at a small local restaurant in Asakusa, where we enjoyed delicious pork ramen. As our planned itinerary was not quite finished, Seizo kindly extended the tour into the afternoon and accompanied us all the way back to our hotel. He also took the time to explain how to navigate the Tokyo subway system, which is very helpful for the rest of our stay. The tour was very well organised and thoughtfully prepared. Seizo's knowledge, kindness and attention to detail made this a valuable introduction to Tokyo and Japanese culture. We highly recommend him to anyone visiting Tokyo!
Show was an excellent guide who showed us so many little, but interesting things, on top of the main things we had chosen to do. He gave really good advice to make some small changes to our plan to improve it but always checked with us first. His fantastic communication before the tour was very reassuring and he kept a nice pace to the tour without rushing ever. Thank you very much for sharing some of your extensive knowledge.
Great morning spent with Takako. She was very knowledgeable about Tokyo as well as being very flexible and helpful in teaching us how to use the metro and tailor the itinerary to our interests. We had a thoroughly enjoyable morning & the best thing to do in your first hours in Tokyo.
Takako was an excellent guide. Allowing us to go out our own pace and tailoring our time to suit us. Very knowledgeable and a lovely person to spend time with. Thoroughly enjoyed our morning with Takako.
Mayumi was very curtious kind and was very informative. Me and my son enjoyed the half day in Tokyo and the weather was perfect. She also took us to a beautiful restaurant to finish the day.
Izumi was amazingly helpful and helped us navigating the subway and finding a place to exchange currency. The tour itself was interesting and informative with lots of explanations about history and culture
We recently were passing through Tokyo and had only one day to see the city. We. booked a walking tour and our guide Kenzo gave us an amazing introduction to the city within our limited time frame . He planned an itinerary that gave us a feeling for several neighborhoods and important sights. He answered all of our questions in a thoughtful manner. We ended the day feeling we had seen and learned so much more about Tokyo and everyday life in Japan than we ever thought possible in Kenzo is knowledgeable, very personable and speaks excellent English. He is a pleasure to spend time with. This was one of the best tours we have ever taken.
Izumi is a really engaged guide with a passion for showing people around his city. He showed us all the history of Tokyo with a fantastical powerpoint presentation and made sure to include us in all the things you could do in the temples. He even went above and beyond and helped us in the subways and to fetch a goshuincho for goshuins collection. 100% recommend.
We did the Tokyo 6 hour walking tour with Masa and he was awesome! We were able to see some really great parts of Tokyo in 6 hours and he showed us how to use the subway. We went to Tsukiji fish market, imperial gardens, shibuya crossing, asakusa area and much more! He was very informative of every area we went to and was able to tell us the history of the area.
What a fantastic way to experience Tokyo! We loved having a tour customized around our interests, allowing us to see exactly what we wanted while learning so much about the city, its history, and Japanese culture. It was such a fun and memorable day for our whole family! Our guide, Mayumi, was absolutely incredible and truly made this experience special! From the beginning, she took the time to understand what we wanted to see and created a wonderful day around our interests. Her knowledge of Tokyo, its history, and Japanese culture was impressive, and we learned so much from her throughout the day. She was also so wonderful with our two kids, patiently answering their questions and making sure everyone felt included. What impressed us most was her genuine kindness and willingness to go above and beyond to make our experience exceptional. Her warmth, generosity, and personal attention meant so much to us. We loved every minute of our time with Mayumi and are so grateful for the wonderful memories she helped us create. We highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tokyo. And if you’re lucky enough to have Mayumi as your guide, you’re in wonderful hands!

Thank you Fumiko for your time. We had a great experience with lots of knowledge and fun facts. We highly recommend using Fumiko as a guide she was fantastic.
Show was an amazing tour guide! He had a great command of the English language which made all the interesting history and culture he shared easy to understand and enjoy. He was flexible when we made last minute changes and even went slightly over time to make sure we saw everything we planned. Best of all, because we are coffee addicts, he brought us to a hidden gem coffee shop that used to be a public bath house. We loved that. We highly recommend Show and doing a customized tour.
We love Kay. She is personable fun to be with and knows Tokyo past to present. SHe also helped with intructions for the subway back to our hotel We would still be riding through the subway system without her help! Thanks for a great day.
An excellent, friendly and very informative guide that adapted the tour to suit our personal requirements. Was very prompt and provided good advice to assist us through the remainder of our holiday. Thank you Sam
Izumi was amazing. Organized and thoughtful. He planned the itinerary with us in advance, and was very flexible. Every time there is a pause or a break, he’s got a tiny little PowerPoint presentation on a topic of interest. There was a store that we wanted to see that turned out not to be anywhere near where we were, so he quickly planned out the transit route for us so we could go ourselves if we wanted, and did the same for a fabric shopping trip I wanted to do later the next day. I recommend him very highly.
What a nice experience. In our very first day at Tokyo, our guide, Izumi, demonstrated extreme friendliness, going well beyond mere knowledge and availability. We fully recomend this experience
Great tour with Koba !! Saw the main sights of Tokyo in just a few hours. Koba had lots of information, spoke great English and was completely considerate and accommodating with our group. Would definitely recommend getting private transport for this trip to maximise your time , rather than opting for public transport. Easy to extend time and great communication before to customise the tour. Thank you Koba 🙏
We had a wonderful customized tour of Tokyo with Kenzo Ito! It was a perfect way to start our first day in Tokyo/Japan. Kenzo did a great job organizing the sites I requested. He shared a wealth of knowledge about the city, shrine and temple etiquette, the train system, and took us to our first tempura restaurant too. It was such a fun day and so nice to spend it with someone eager to show us around. Many thanks to Kenzo and the city of Tokyo! Highly recommend this tour!
We had an amazing tour with Sho T. He was so kind and an amazing tour guide! He was very knowledgeable and efficient and provided great recommendations. I can’t recommend Sho T enough!
The guided tour in Asakusa was a unique experience. We felt very comfortable with our guide Mitch. The tour started at Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center, which was a perfect meeting point with a great view over Asakusa and the Sensō-ji Temple. On our way to the temple we learned a lot about japanese culture, religion and history. After this major sight Mitch showed us some hidden spots for dining and shopping in Asakusa we probably wouldn't have found ourselves. The two hours flew by. So we can really recommend a private guided tour like the one we enjoyed.
Kei was punctual, informative, most helpful and knows a lot about Japan and the history
Komaki was so kind and considerate. It was my mother’s first time in Japan and Komaki made her first day special.
First day in Tokyo before starting a land tour. Fummy our guide was wonderful. Having chosen from the list of options provided we did end up taking a lot of subway rides. If you prefer to walk less check on a map how far apart your choices are if you want to walk less. But we loved what we saw, some great temples and fish market was fun. Fummy was attentive and a great guide.
Hi I just wanted to say Kay was a fabulous tour guide I was solo traveller so one on one was perfect, Kay explained everything I needed to know and her knowledge of the areas and places we visited she definitely knows her history. She’s is very professional and easy to get along with and friendly which made my tour very enjoyable. I would definitely book Kay on my next trip to Tokyo. Regards Massimo
We took a 4-hour guided tour with Tatsu and would highly recommend it to anyone! Before the tour, we discussed what we wanted to see and were able to suggest specific places and Tatsu came up with a route for us. The tour itself was really enjoyable, we learned a lot about the places we visited.
Kate did a great job guiding us around Tokyo. She is very knowledgeable about Japan’s history and culture. She was very helpful in planning our subway route for some additional adventures we had after her tour. Overall, we had a terrific tour with Kate. We would highly recommend her.
