This is a fun and informative experience. We learned about the history of sushi as well as the proper way to eat it. This was followed by hands on instruction on how to prepare the fish as well as how to make sushi and nigiri. Our hosts were friendly and knowledgeable which added to the experience. I especially appreciate the way they worked with the children in our group. I definitely recommend this experience.

The Chef has 7 years of experience in the restaurant industry in Japan. She has completed the Edomae Sushi Technique Acquisition Course at the Tokyo Sushi School. She applies her culinary skills and proficiency in English to offer an enjoyable and educational Sushi Cooking Lesson in her home. Guests can enjoy an at-home environment in a quiet, residential area of Japan, as they learn how to make four types of sushi. The lesson culminates in a delicious meal that the participants have made themselves. Akemi sources only the best ingredients to make the sushi, including blended rice specially ordered from Hachidaime Gihey in Kyoto (est. 1787) and fresh fish (“neta”) sourced directly from fish markets in Toyosu and Tsukiji. In addition to learning how to make sushi, guests will learn about the history of sushi, essential terminology, and sushi eating etiquette. Even Japanese guests have told us that they learned a lot about their own food culture! Lessons are limited to a maximum of five students, so you will be assured plenty of personal attention. Even if you have never tried sushi before, you can be confident that your hand-prepared meal will be a delight.

Great experience not learning only about how to make sushi, but also some of the back story. Very fun evening.
Awesome experience. Everyone was super nice and helpful. I would come back again.
Great experience! Learned a lot about making sushi! Would recommend to anyone!
A great night, warm and wonderful hosts. The food quality was outstanding, we learned a lot and had a fabulous time
We had the opportunity to enjoy a sushi-making experience with our family and friends, and it was truly a wonderful time. Everything was very smooth from start to finish, and the communication was both thoughtful and warm, making it easy for us to feel comfortable and connected throughout the experience. Akemi’s personality was incredibly charming, and we sincerely hope to see her again. We would highly recommend this experience to anyone.
This was truly a special, delicious, and educational sushi experience. The workshop is held at Akemi’s Sushi Kitchen in her private home. Akemi-san’s husband was also there, and he was very kind and welcoming. We began with a beautiful Japanese welcome drink, and Akemi-san explained Edomae sushi, a traditional Tokyo style, in a very clear and easy-to-understand way. Before using real fish, we first practised shaping sushi with a small handmade cloth model, which I thought was a very thoughtful idea. Then we filleted the fish, sliced it carefully, grated fresh wasabi, and finally made our own inari sushi, gunkan-maki, maki rolls, and nigiri. I was especially impressed by Akemi-san’s attention to the ingredients. You can truly feel how much care she puts into every detail. If you are looking for a small, local cooking experience in a real Japanese home and would like to learn authentic sushi-making that you can recreate at home, taught by a professionally trained sushi instructor, I sincerely recommend this experience.

Akemi and Dan are such a lovely couple, and thanks to their hospitality and friendly vibe, I felt relaxed the whole time. The ingredients were super high-quality, and I was amazed that we got to make and eat real Edomae-style sushi. I also made friends in the class, which made the experience even more fun and opened up my world a bit. If you want to experience Japan, not just visit it, I totally recommend this class.
Wow!! What a great experience!! Not only learning hands on preparation, also learned some history, accessing ingredients, about purchase cooking utensils and the choices of sake! Our hosts were sooo very patient, friendly and knowledgeable. A definite must do if you like to eat sushi!!
We had the pleasure to book a cooking class with Akemi and Dan for our family vacation. This was hands down the highlight of our trip to Tokyo. Both Akemi and Dan were warm, helpful, and knowledgeable throughout our lesson. To be sure the sushi was exceptional ( I am a total sushi foodie) but thier engagement with our family is what made the experience truly world class. We ended up eating a ton of sushi along with great memories.
Akemi's Sushi Kitchen was the highlight of our trip! Akemi and Dan were so kind and welcoming. They seamlessly accommodated our salmon allergy. The session was a perfect blend of education and hands-on learning, with insightful explanations of Japanese sushi terms and techniques. We loved making tamago, fresh wasabi, and nigiri. We learned so much and how to eat nigiri properly, and we enjoyed getting to know them. Akemi provided clear instructions and lots of insight for any questions we had! Definitely a must-do when you're in Tokyo!
We took the class on march 2025 with my wife. I wasn’t expecting anything since I was here to please her tbh, but Akemi and Dan, the hosts proved me wrong. We really learned a lot of interesting things and tips in order to prepare sushis at home. The course is well prepared and the hosts are really welcoming. The sushi platter was diversified and we even used real wasabi. If you are a foodie, or a person who likes to cook or even just a person who wants to try something different, I can only recommend you to take the class. Thanks again to Akemi and Dan for this experience !
The sushi class with Chef Akemi was such a great experience! From the start, she welcomed us into her home with a really tasty Sakura milk tea. She explained everything in a super interesting way, making it easy to follow, even for beginners. The hands-on part was so much fun, and making sushi felt surprisingly natural with her guidance. And of course, eating our own sushi for lunch was the best part—it tasted amazing! Akemi is an awesome teacher, and the whole class had a really relaxed and friendly vibe. Definitely a five-star experience, highly recommended!
おもてなし最高でした。お寿司つくりとても楽しかったです。心もお腹も満たされました。素敵な時間をありがとうございました。😊 The hospitality was great. It was a lot of fun making sushi. I satisfied my stomac and heart. Thank you for the wonderful time.
From the moment I walked in the front door of AKEMI’s SUSHiKiTCHEN, I could feel the wonderful atmosphere. Although I am Japanese, I didn’t know anything about Edomae Sushi, so I was able to enjoy learning from square one. The exquisite harmony of the red vinegar rice and fish, the fresh aroma and spiciness of fresh wasabi, and the gentle flavor of the soup that takes nothing away from th sushi; it was all outstanding. I would like to see many people enjoy this experience. My mother, who participated in the lesson with me, said over and over, “I’m so happy.” Soothed by the warm hospitality of Akemi and her husband, we brought a lovely year to a close.
I made sushi myself for the first time in my life, as I received an enjoyable lesson in a very comfortable kitchen. The sushi looked beautiful, and it was all delicious. What a wonderful experience!
We had a wonderful time learning about and making sushi at Akemi's Sushi Kitchen! Akemi and Dan are super friendly hosts and we enjoyed the atmosphere of their lovely home. Akemi is a great teacher and the sushi was fresh and delicious. Even though we were already big sushi fans we still learned a lot of new things! We would highly recommend this experience to friends and family.
知らないことがたくさんあり、お寿司を楽しく学べ、文化の美しさを再認識しました!! 同僚と一緒に体験しましたが、出来上がりの美しさがみんな違って面白かったです! There was lots that I didn’t know; I learned about the joy of sushi, and I was reminded of how beautiful culture is. I enjoyed this experience with my colleagues, and it was interesting to see how everyone’s finished sushi plate was attractive but different!
The ingredients were fresh and delicious, and the hospitality was wonderful! It was an amazing experience... Thank you!
教え方が丁寧だし面白かったです! そしてとにかく作ったお寿司がとってもおいしかったです! 最高の体験でした! The way Akemi teaches is fun and easy to understand! And the sushi was really delicious!
最高の寿司体験です! 素敵な先生がいて、日本の歴史と共に寿司の握り方や小噺を教えてくれます!とてもおすすめします! The best Sushi experience in Tokyo! The host is so kind and nice, and show us their special skills and teach us how to make good Sushi with knowledge of Japanese history. Highly recommend!
I had fun making many some kinds of sushi while learning about the history of Edomae sushi, which was very interesting. I didn’t only enjoy making sushi but also tasting them as well. Everything served was I’m good quality and special. ( not only fish but also rice, vinegar, seaweed etc..) I’ve eaten sushi at many places but it was the bestest sushi ever in my whole life. Hope to visit again!
The sushi was delicious and we were guided every step. They were very friendly and we learned so much about sushi! The place was very warm and felt like home and it makes me want to be a sushi chef myself 🤗
You can experience making high-level sushi! You can make your own sushi plate using rice, seaweed, and fresh ingredients that go well with sushi. The instructions are very easy to understand, so even beginners can feel at ease.
Absolutely fantastic experience. Found a new deep appreciation for the art of edo Mae sushi! Akemi radiates passion in her teaching. Many laughs were shared amongst my family ❤️ highly recommend for an intimate experience in Japanese culture. Very foreign friendly as Dan was there to help support translation.
Had an amazing time to learn not only how to make a sushi but also about sushi. Bilingual Sushi chef, Akemi’s explanation is interesting and learned a lot. Super fun activity for all age, gender. Strongly recommend it.
Awesome time at Akemi's Kitchen! Totally recommended even for families with small children. Great food. I learned so much about this uniquely Japanese art, which I have been eating my whole life.
Thank you very much for today. Akemi is very particular about everything in her lesson, so the sushi that I have been eating for years seemed different and special. She is very fussy about not only the fresh fish used on the sushi, but also the rice, the vinegar, the soy sauce, and the seaweed. She even taught us how to each sushi properly. It was a difficult, but it was a very enjoyable time.
All of the sushi was delicious; especially the tuna procured directly from Tsukiji: It just melts in your mouth 😭💕 I learned a lot about sushi, so it was a great experience. The atmosphere is very pleasant, and I could feel how much effort Akemi puts into everything she does. Akemi is very kind, and her teaching style is easy to understand. I enjoyed everything about the lesson, including the various kinds of sushi, the Japanese tea, and the dessert. This lesson was lots of fun! Thank you very much. 😭✨
I learned a lot of history and trivia about Edomae Sushi, as well as how to eat sushi, and proper etiquette. I graduated from university this year and have started working for a company, so I am very happy to know sushi etiquette when I go to eat sushi at a restaurant! I received support from the owner, Akemi, and her assistant, Dan, who worked as a team. Because they have the lesson in their home, it’s very relaxed, and easy to concentrate, so it was lots of fun. I plan to recommend the lesson to my friends.
“I really appreciated the detailed and easy-to-understand explanations about sushi! I would love to experience it again if I have the opportunity.
Akemi & Dan were absolutely awesome! Chilling in their home and learning how to make sushi was so chill, especially on a hot summer day when we didn’t feel like being outside. Plenty of food to eat too. The fish quality itself was surprisingly good too. Akemi did most of the sushi teaching and lessons, Dan was a great English-speaking interpreter too! Akemi’s English is solid too, and their chemistry is sweet. The most fun I’ve ever had making lunch with my buddies! 10/10 would recommend to friend groups and families
Professional, fun, tasty; overall great experience. Sushi was really good and very informative style of teaching. Would recommend
At AKEMI’s SUSHiKiTCHEN, you can have lunch and enjoy the experience of making top-class Edo-mae sushi. Lessons are offered in both English and Japanese. Akemi, a trained sushi chef, conducts the lessons at her own house, so the at-home hospitality is very easy-going. You can learn about the history of Edo-mae sushi, and thanks to the easy-to-understand guidance, even beginners can make hand-pressed sushi and rolled sushi skillfully. And when you get to the best part – eating the sushi – the taste is superb! All of the ingredients are carefully selected; not only the fresh fish, but also the rice, the vinegar, and the seaweed, so it is truly delicious, from the vinegar rice to the fish on top. And there’s also Japanese sake, which goes very well with sushi. I highly recommend this Edo-mae sushi experience, which is packed with Akemi’s close attention to detail, not only for travelers from overseas, but for Japanese people as well! Now that I have learned how to make rolled sushi and inari sushi, I look forward to trying it at home. Thank you very much for a wonderful time.
You can have a private lesson with close friends, and enjoy the experience of making sushi with the easy-to-understand guidance of Akemi, a trained sushi chef. In addition to nigiri (hand-pressed) sushi, you will learn to make inari sushi (in tofu pockets) and maki-sushi (rolled sushi). As we touched on elements of Japanese culture, we learned why sushi is so delicious, and we learned the little tricks that the professionals use. We could feel how Akemi pays close attention to the fresh fish, of course, but also the rice, the vinegar, and even the beverages. Dan’s explanations were nice and easy to understand. As we enjoyed the warm hospitality of our two hosts, we dined on delicious sushi. I plan to invite some other close friends and go again soon!
Akemi-san was a fantastic host. She showed her excellent skills in fish cutting, rice cooking, sushi making, but most importantly, she made sure that all the participants understood the history of sushi and how to make it properly. I enjoyed the whole experience so much - thank you Akemi-san! Enjoyed all the yummy food, and especially I got to try the food that I made as well. If you’re visiting Tokyo and looking for a fun indoor experience, you should definitely not miss this!
I enjoyed sushi making with wonderful sushi chef, Akemi-san. Quality and taste of fish was so good and I learned something new about Sushi. Thank you!
We had an amazing time taking Akemi's sushi class. The food was delicious and she talked us through all the steps of sushi making. I can't wait to make some sushi at home. Akemi and Dan were so easy to communicate with and even picked us up at the station. It was a delightful way to spend the evening and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try making sushi.
Had an amazing sushi making experience. Bilingual sushi chef, Akemi is lovely lady who passionately teaching about sushi. All neta (fish) are very fresh and five star quality from fish market. A lot of laugh during the lesson. Strongly recommend the lesson. Nice family activity too.
I took the lesson with my 12 year old son and 8 year old daughter. We are Japanese and Canadian family based in Tokyo, so we thought we knew about Japanese sushi. THIS was more than we expected! It is fun and kids-friendly lesson that you can learn how to make authentic Japanese sushi like Nigiri, Rolls, Inari and even Gunkan from scratch. Akemi has a lot of ways to bring our sushi making to another level. All the ingredients were very fresh and top quality. Besides, you would appreciate their hospitality. We had a great time. We will definitely come back and take the lesson again. Thank you so much!
I took the lesson with my son. He’s in the 6th grade, and he’s never tried cooking, so I was a little anxious about whether he would be able to make sushi, but he paid close attention as he participated in the lesson, asking a lot of questions, and he enjoyed making the sushi. My son said, “The explanations were easy to understand, and the sushi was delicious!” When we made the nigiri-sushi, everyone said together, “air→pinch→press…” Akemi carefully chooses all the ingredients, including the rice, the neta, the seaweed, and the red vinegar. The rice was very easy to press, and really delicious. We could choose alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages to drink with lunch, and I picked a Japanese sake called SOUTEN. It was smooth and refreshing, and very tasty! Making sushi was more fun than I expected, and I learned a lot.
Everything prepared here were in top quality; the fish, rice, vinegar, seaweed, wasabi, soy sauce, sake, and desserts. Even as a Japanese, I learned a lot of eye-opening trivia throughout the day. As for the most important part, the nigiri, I was given an easy-to-understand explanation of the key points, and thanks to the opportunity to practice using beanbags, even I, who am clumsy, was able to make beautiful nigiri. My 10- years-old son also enjoyed making Sushi very much. I was impressed by the deliciousness, which far exceeded my expectations. The wonderful ingredients carefully selected by Akemi took my Sushi to the different level, it was as delicious as good sushi restaurants around here in Tokyo 😆 Additionally, it's not a one-time experience; a delicious treat makes you want to return again and again. I can now understand why my husband and daughter, who had visited just two months ago, were excited and wanted to go back again. AKEMI's SUSHiKiTCHEN just opened in April 2024, so now is the time to visit before it becomes too popular to make a reservation.
Why has sushi come to be loved by people around the world, transcending national borders? This experience solves that riddle. And when you see how popular it is with Japanese people as well, you will understand clearly how truly attractive this sushi lesson is. Every single piece of sushi embodies Japanese attention to detail and quality. I recommend this lesson to anyone who wants to learn about Japan through the culture of sushi. One last thing that I want to add is that you can also experience true Japanese “Omotenashi,” which captures all of the meticulous hospitality of a Japanese household. I thoroughly enjoyed the incredibly delicious sushi! The brief history lessons on sushi and the significance of "Edo-Mae" in Japanese daily life and culture truly enriched my understanding. Learning about the traditions behind various practices associated with sushi made me appreciate the centuries, if not millennia, of thought and experience that have shaped this exquisite culinary art.
This was one of the best experiences I have since arriving in 1996. The food was amazing, if you an interest in Japanese food and culture this is a must. The chief was a true master in conjunction with learning about the origins of sushi made this a truly memorable event. Recommend everyone should give this a try.
This was our first time to make sushi, and it was more fun and interesting than I though it would be! The chef, Akemi, was really kind and she explained all the important things about sushi making. I learned a lot of new things. In addition, the ingredients she prepared were the top quality. Everything was so delicious! She was also very good with our kids, including 2 teenagers. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is interested in sushi making! Also, if you learn how to make sushi from the Chef Akemi, you can always make it at home!
This cooking lesson has a homey, easy-going atmosphere. It was fun to hear trivia not only about sushi but also about the tools used to make it. The wasabi, grated with a professional sharkskin grating board, was something you don’t usually get to eat; it was creamy and fragrant. I was happy to learn how to make authentic nigiri-sushi, rather than the te-maki sushi that people usually make at home. I want to show off my newly learned skills to guests at a party. The lesson plan includes a drink, soup, and even dessert, so it’s a bargain.
I made sushi for the first time in my life! It was really interesting to learn the tricks to make sushi at home, and I was surprised at how big the seafood “neta” were ❤️ Akemi’s explanation was easy to understand, so the sushi came out really well, even though it was my first time. I was so happy! There was a great selection of Japanese sake, which goes perfectly with Edo-mae Sushi. The next time I go to Japan, I am definitely going to go back to AKEMI’s SUSHiKiTCHEN❗️ I wonder what kind of fish I will see next time… I am really looking forward to finding out 😊
I went to a sushi lesson with four friends! Akemi is very selective about the ingredients, on the level of a luxury restaurant; not just the seafood “neta” that goes on top of the sushi, but also the rice, the vinegar, and the seaweed. I never thought that sushi I made myself could be this delicious! We started out by learning how to make the vinegar rice, so I look forward to serving sushi at a party with friends after we have some practice. Eating the sushi we made ourselves was the best experience, as we heard about the history of sushi and other trivia. At the end of the meal, we had the dessert of our choosing. I would recommend this lesson to everyone!
