We booked a private Waygu cookery class for our family of 4 adults. We all had an amazing time learning to cook a full Japanese meal. Our instructor, Hidemi, was excellent - very informative and fun. We learned a lot about our ingredients as well as cooking techniques. And we particularly enjoyed eating the meal afterwards!!

Itinerary
All ingredients and supplies, an apron and a towel will be provided for you. Your class will be a small group (limited to a maximum of 8 people), so you will never be a bystander. Wagyu is a world-famous word nowadays. “Wa” means Japan(ese), and “Gyu” means beef. During this class, you will make use of various methods to complete your full-course lunch, from appetizers to dessert. The instructors are all friendly, English-speaking locals who are happy to assist you. They will share some tips and stories of each recipe and sometimes share some secret techniques, too. This cooking class will give you a homey atmosphere to cook in. As Japanese always start with “Dashi”-making, each class will begin with the making of "Dashi," the fundamental soup stock of Japanese cooking. Your instructor will also explain about some of the typical Japanese seasonings which are frequently used. Then, you will prepare 7 dishes learning classic and modern recipes, ways to present food, elaborate cuttings and unique Japanese ingredients. As a main dish, you cook some beautiful, tender Wagyu beef. After all of the cooking is finished, finally, it will be time to say 'Itadakimasu!'

The cooking class was informative and fun to be in. What I wasn't a fan of was eating cold eggs and cold potatoes. I understand that is apart of their culture. Other cooking classes allowed me to eat as we went but they make you wait until the end. That was my only gripe with the class. You learned how to make dashi and the wagyu beef was great.
Wonderful educational clean and organized it really started a great time on our trip to Japan. I highly recommend you do this.
I love to cook and this was a great way to learn some new Japanese recipes. The menu and food was delicious gives me incentives to be more creative in my cooking. We were the first ones there and sat closest to the door. However, the instructors mainly taught and spoke to the ones in front so we couldn't get a good view of what she was doing so we just had to wing it based on what we saw.
My two teenage daughters and I attended the wagyu sukiyaki class and had an amazing time. We learned about local ingredients and techniques, and even learned some historical and cultural facts as well. Our dishes were delicious and we were pleased that we were able to produce such beautiful masterpieces. Thank our for the experience.
Best organized activity I did on my Japan trip. Learned a lot, had fun, food was delicious and class was well organized.
It was one of the best cooking classes. The dishes were great and it was a lot of fun. A fabulous experience that I would highly recommend.
Small group, great instructors, great menu. We each prepared our own meal. We leaned techniques in Japanese cooking cuisine ,about the ingredients they use. I fell in love with Japanese cuisine and intend to practice it at home. We were not hungry but we ate it all. In the following days bought the egg pan , cooking tools and a lot of spices.
Great opportunity to learn some common Japanese dishes from scratch from lovely English speaking instructors. Awesome experience for the whole family.
If you’re after authentic Japanese food & recipes, delivered by experienced and knowledgeable people in a small ‘class’ environment, you will be thrilled with this experience. It’s easy to get to with a 7 minute walk from the train station, priced very well (especially given it includes all the ingredients) and is a good way to meet other travellers from different cultures. We highly recommend it.
The cooking experience was a great activity that I will surely do again with family. The staff is amazing. They were welcoming and kind. They made it a memorable experience!!
An excellent introduction to traditional Japanese cooking. Bitufa was clear in her instructions, the ingredients were good quality and the resulting food delicious. I would definitely recommend
I had such a great experience with this cooking class in Tokyo. The instructors were incredibly informative and explained everything in a way that felt approachable and easy to follow, even for someone who doesn’t regularly cook Japanese food. What I appreciated most was how accessible the recipes were — nothing felt intimidating or overly complicated, and each step was clearly explained. I left the class feeling genuinely confident and excited to try making Japanese dishes again once I got home. It was both educational and empowering, and I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a hands-on, thoughtful introduction to Japanese cooking.
Thank you so much for this wonderful cooking class at Cooking Sun. We cooked a variety of side dishes such as cucumber, omelette (sooo good!), potatoes, pancakes, and more. We also cooked our own wagyu beef, and everything was absolutely delicious!! The class was very interesting, and the three women who taught us were truly kind. I will definitely try to book another class with Cooking Sun in Kyoto because I really loved this experience. It was a true highlight of my trip to Japan. Thank you very much, and see you again soon!
Our family had a wonderful experience at this cooking class. It was definitely a highlight of our trip. In three hours we helped create seven dishes. All of them were delicious, especially the sukiyaki with Wagyu beef.
Tuck in a residential area, Cooking Sun is a nice cooking studio. It’s clean and comfortable. Our teachers are very kind and patient. They don’t only teach you how to cook but they tell you stories about the ingredients like where they come from and they are harvested. This is the highlight of my Tokyo trip. Great for beginner cooks and those who love to eat like me.
This was such a fun way to better understand Japanese food and culture. Our instructor spoke perfect English and explained everything clearly. The dishes were simple but delicious and we were able to prepare a beautiful meal in two hours. Highly recommend!
This cooking class allowed me to discover a bunch of side dishes that I had never heard of before, as well as learn about some of the fundamental ingredients for Japanese cooking. Most of the ingredient prep has already been done so that the time can be spent on the more interesting parts of the cooking. No advanced cooking skills are needed. Full recipes are provided to take home. The instructors are cheerful, fluent in English, and helpfully answered many of our questions about Japanese cooking.
Our host, Megumi was a pleasure to meet and work with. The menu was exceptional and we were pleasantly surprised how easy Megumi made creating a delicious meal. We definitely feel like we are able to replicate all the dishes at home for family and friends. Thank you for a delightful afternoon and amazing dinner.
This was one of the best cookery classes we have been to but it is a difficult building to locate. Aya and Hidemi were excellent instructors. The food we cooked was amazing - I couldn't believe that we cooked so much in such a short space of time. I would highly recommend this cookery class for anyone visiting Tokyo who has an interest in Japanese cuisine.
Our instructor was very nice , punctual and fun to be with. The dishes were tasty but we did not have 7 dishes. We hsix -daikon salad was missing Perhaps an oversight While the dishes were tasty the waygu beef advertised did not happen
My husband and I both really enjoyed this class. Was great to learn how some of the traditional foods are made. The food we mde was really tasty and the instructors were all very kind, helpful and knowledgable.
Thank you to Megumi and the rest of the team for such a interesting and enjoyable cookery class The instruction to cook our 7 course meal was excellent, it was well paced as a learning experience and the small group size , in a lovely Tokyo residential area and warm hospitality from our hosts added to the class The lunch was delicious , a five star experience
I enjoyed and learned new things from the class.. Easy to follow and understand. The food that we cooked were delicious. Short lectures and explained every detail. Location was easy to find, just follow the google map, you’ll also enjoy walking on the way, lots of trees and quiet environment. The place is clean too. Highly recommend it.
Our instructors were so knowledgeable, and the preparation they did made it reasonably simple to prepare a wonderful lunch. Learned a lot about ingredients- can’t wait to try at home
We made 8 dishes, starting with dashi. Then we used the dashi in almost every other dish we made. This is real cooking and it’s exactly what I wanted. Thank you to the instructors for making it fun and relaxed. The studio was spotlessly clean and inviting and comfortable. I felt at home. And the meal was delicious. It was perhaps my favorite activity in Tokyo. Highly recommend!
Excellent experience with great chefs that were engaging and helpful. Delicious food to enjoy at the end. Well worth the money.
We had an amazingly fun time learning how to make ramen. They explained everything so well and we learned so much. Definitely recommend this class!
This was the best thing we did on the entire trip. I absolutely loved how fun, helpful, and knowledgeable our guide was.
Lovely small group experience, cooking many of the home cooking Japanese dishes that we don’t see in restaurants as much. We had a wonderful time with these ladies and enjoyed a tasty lunch at the end of our efforts
Very well run cooking class!! Clear instructions and lots of interesting context about the ingredients and history.
The chefs anticipated what we would need clarity in and taught us each step and the “why” behind the process. There was patient attention to detail, flavor, and the aesthetic beauty of the meal we prepared. They shared about themselves and we all learned about each other as well, so it was a lovely communal experience. Less about students attending a class and more about a share cultural, historical, and social gathering. The food was delicious and we were left with a sense of joy, wonder and satisfaction at our accomplishment. In addition, we learned how to use tools in the Japanese kitchen that we had not yet been exposed to. That joy led us to find those items in Tokyo to bring some of that cooking process home. What a wonderful way to spend the day! Thank you so much!
We really enjoyed this cooking class. Everything was well organized. They showed us how to make some things and other things we could do ourselves, this was perfectly balanced. Very professional and very hospitable. The instructors are Japanese. They are fluent in English and explain everything very well. The food was delicious. If you like cooking and Japanese cuisine I would surely recommend this cooking class to you.
Really well set up, knowledgeable and friendly instructors with good equipment. They were able to satisfy me as a very capable cook while bringing along a few very inexperienced cooks at the same time.
This is class is amazing!!!!! Absolutely amazing! We had such a good time and our teachers were fabulous! It was very hands-on and so informative. I feel that when we get home I will be able to make all of the dishes we made in class and serve them proudly to my family!
The location is difficult to find But when you get there the class is wonderful. The ladies are so lovely and we learned a lot. The food was delicious
The location is a little tricky to find for some, but our taxi got us there perfectly. The Chefs are great! We learned how to make several delicious dishes and had a lot of fun doing it. Maybe they are not allowed but I was hoping for a little cup of sake with our lunch.
Fun and interesting! We learned a lot and made a lot of delicious food! Left with several recipes we plan to use at home.
Such a great class! Super fun to learn more about staple, seasonal ingredients and recipes used in Japanese cooking. The instructors were great, explaining techniques and making it approachable to everyone with virtually any cooking experience.
This class is great for people with all levels of cooking experience. If you're looking for a lot of hands-on experience. Note that other than cooking an egg and searing a lotus stuffed with minced chicken meat that's prepared ahead of time, you will mostly chop and mix dressings together while the staff prepares the other foods such as miso soup, rice, potatoes, etc. It's still a great class for learning to make a traditional kaiseki meal and you can't beat the price, so worth it regardless.
Cooking Sun is an awesome place to learn Japanese cooking with a small group. They use high-quality ingredients and have a great team of staff.
The staff were friendly, professional and timely. Their English was easy to understand. It was a little out of the way so taxi could not find it. However, Google maps helped us to find the cooking school. The menu was great and we will return home to teach our friends what we learned. That Wagyu was so tender, unlike the Wagyu we had for dinner tonight.
Amazing experience. I learned so much and they were super accommodating of my many allergies. I’d recommend this to anyone.
The hosts were very engaging and encouraging, and all the ingredients were of high quality. So we enjoyed both the atmosphere and the final products.
This was our family’s first trip to Japan, and every day was packed with different activities and outings. We all agreed that this cooking class was one of the highlights of the trip. Everything was extremely organized and easy to follow, and the instructors were very sweet and knowledgeable. And the food we made was delicious!
Had a brilliant time. Hidemi and Kaori were great hosts and teachers. The food we cooked ourselves was delicious. Highly recommended.
We really enjoyed the class & learnt a lot - relatively hands on & excellent instructions from the lovely women running the class. The meal we created was a feast & delicious - thoroughly recommend!
Amazing! So much fun and everything turned out delicious! 10/10 would do again! The ladies were super friendly and helpful. I am not the cook in the family but I'm really surprised with what I made with their guidance. Definitely try this place out, it's bright, cozy, and very fun!
A fantastic experience with a super kind instructor. We did the 7 japanese dishes and learned a lot about the different ingredients and flavours of japanese cuisine. The lesson was never rushed and the meal was great. Highly recommend!
The teachers were great, and the lesson was well animated so it was a pleasure to follow it. The lunch that we cooked was very good and we could connect japanese cuisine flavors to ingredients. Though, we think the cooking skills taught were more suited for begginers. Thank you for the lesson !
