Itinerary
Experience authentic Tokyo beyond the tourist areas and step into the world of Japanese home cooking with Emi, a local host who will teach you the dishes Japanese families cook at home. In this private Tokyo cooking class, you'll cook three traditional dishes, learn everyday cooking techniques, and share a meal while discovering the culture behind the food. Begin your experience with a refreshing cup of mugi-cha (barley tea) before diving into your hands-on Japanese cooking lesson. Choose three dishes from a menu of Japanese favorites, including gyoza, tempura, okonomiyaki, karaage, and yakisoba, and learn to prepare them step by step. (note *okonomiyaki contains fish stock). To ensure a seamless experience, all guests will prepare the same main dish, so kindly share your choice at least 4 days in advance, or Emi will thoughtfully select a menu for you. Over 1.5–2 hours, enjoy engaging conversations about food and Japanese culture while Emi guides you through creating your meal. Emi shares recipes so you can recreate these cherished flavors back home.

Emi's class was one of the highlights of our whole trip. She is so warm and honest, and we loved how candid she was about real day-to-day life in Japan, the stuff you never get from a guidebook. She taught us several Japanese phrases and was so patient with our pronunciation. I was nervous about saying things wrong and she just laughed with us and made us try again. By the end we were actually using the phrases on the way home. She also recommended a bunch of neighborhoods to explore, and her picks were spot on. Places we never would have found on our own. The food was incredible. We made oyakodon, onigiri, and okonomiyaki, all with high quality ingredients, and every dish was simple, fresh, and absolutely delicious. She broke everything down so clearly that all four of us feel confident making them back home in San Diego. We already promised each other a cooking night. She was also so kind and patient about a mistake I made with the booking date. She handled it with total grace and never made me feel bad about it for a second. Emi is a wonderful chef and an even better person. We cannot wait to see her again on our next trip to Japan.
This cooking class was great! My family really enjoyed the experience and the food came out delicious. Emi spoke great English and was very knowledgeable. We had a great time talking and cooking with her. I definitely recommend giving this class a try!

Cooking with Emi was a wonderful experience. She is vibrant, energetic, and very knowledgeable. She has great stories to share about the country and the culture and the food of Japan. This was one of our favorite experiences on our trip to Tokyo! Emi provided amazing directions, personal connection and a truly lovely experience. We had the opportunity to make many dishes that we can’t wait to recreate when we get home! The space is clean and easy to find, Emi’s communication was clear and detailed, the experience was just a ton of fun! Highly recommend!
I had an excellent experience with Emi's cooking lesson. From the first moment, her communication was excellent, her instructions to find the studio were spot-on, and her poise, personality and knowledge were amazing. I learnt how to cook three recipes, some tricks and alternative ingredients available in my country and we chatted over a shot of sake. Time flew, because her personality is magnetic. Do not skip this activity! It will be the highlight of your time in Tokyo!
We had a wonderful family time at this cooking class! Emi was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and provided excellent guidance throughout the session. Every step was clearly explained, and we learned so many practical tips that will help us recreate the recipes easily at home. The food we prepared was absolutely delicious — fresh ingredients, authentic flavors, and a fun, hands-on experience. I left feeling confident and inspired to cook these dishes again for my family and friends. Highly recommend this class to anyone who loves good food and wants to learn in a relaxed and enjoyable environment!
Emi was a lovely cooking instructor. She showed us how to make okonomiyaki, tempura, and gyoza and shared the recipes with us. We loved being in a private class and getting to speak with her about Japanese culture as well.
It was great experience to cook with Emi, we learned a lot about home cooking from her. I strongly suggest to take this class!
We had a great time with Emi. We received the recipes for our selected dishes and met up in a kitchen studio. Emi was very kind and explained us what to do, step by step. The food was really good and we take some precious memories with us. Our selected recipes: Gyoza (Shrimp) Yakisoba (Vegetarian) Ginger fried pork
We had fun cooking with Emi. She taught us how to make tempura, okonomiyaki and yakisoba noodles. She gave us some tips and the recipes. She was very interested in learning about us and our culture as well as sharing about Japan. We would highly recommend her cooking class.
We had a really great time cooking and talking with Emi! We learned to cook some nice traditional dishes that we totally can and will do at home in the future. The cherry on top was the chatting with her - she was really friendly and gave us some japanes backround informations an tipps for our trip! We totally recommend the cooking course with Emi!
It was a small intimate expletive that we shared with Emi which was perfect! We had good fun learning how to cook some Japanese home cuisine which we will definitely use for the future! :) Emi was a gracious host who looked after us really well!!
We really loved our cooking experience. Emi sent us options in advance to choose from tailored to my pescatarian diet. On the day we had a lovely time and the food was delicious! Thank you Emi!
Emi is a great host, talked a lot and learner a lot about Japan, cooking vise and more. I fully recommend!
Our cooking class with Emi was such a special experience! We made some absolutely delicious Japanese dishes, and Emi guided us through each step with patience and care. She shared so many useful tips that we can’t wait to bring back home and try in our own kitchen. The whole experience felt super authentic and local—like cooking with a friend in her home. Emi was incredibly sweet, knowledgeable, and made us feel so welcome. Highly recommend this class if you’re looking for a meaningful, hands-on experience in Japan. :)
Emi’s cooking lesson was one of the best experiences during our trip to Tokyo! Emi is hospitable and amazing teacher! All the interactions before the lesson were very smooth: Emi asked us about dishes preferences, sent us recipes and a clear instruction of how to get to the studio. During the lesson it was great to chat with Emi! There was no language barrier – we all spoke English. We discussed products and ways of cooking that are used in our countries, culture, languages and traditions. Also, she advised us several nice places to see around Tokyo. The dishes that we cooked under her supervision turned out to be very tasty and quite easy to repeat (if we manage to get the proper ingredients). Thank you very much for this wonderful evening! I recommend this course to anyone who likes cooking and is eager to learn more about Japan and respect the Japanese culture!
I booked a private cooking class for me and my husband with Emi. She emailed a couple of options for the menu and I was to pick 3 items. I chose the pork and vegetable pot stickers, pork with ginger sauce and shrimp and vegetable tempura. The class start time was 10am however, we were a half hour late due to the wrong instructions about when to get off the train that was given to us by the hotel where we were staying. When we arrived Emi was very gracious about it. We talked for a bit and then commenced to do the prep work for our dishes. She explained that the dishes needed to be cooked one at a time. The first thing we made were the pot stickers. They were delicious. Next up was the shrimp and vegetable tempura which was another winner. Last but not least was the pork with ginger sauce. It was a tasty dish as well. When we left her class she was kind enough to walk us to the location of the train station to get back to Yokohama. If you are in Tokyo and want to learn to make authentic Japanese dishes you can't go wrong picking this class. I would advise to book early as this is a popular class.
My wife Sheila and I attended this class and she wrote the review: I booked a private cooking class for me and my husband with Emi. We had such a wonderful time at Emi’s cooking class in Tokyo - it was truly one of the highlights of our trip! The experience felt incredibly personal and authentic, as it took place in Emi’s home, which gave everything a warm and welcoming atmosphere right from the start. Since it was a private cooking class, we were able to choose from a variety of delicious menu options so we went with salmon, gyoza and okonomiyaki - all of which turned out very delicious, thanks to Emi’s instructions and tips. But what made the class extra special was how open and engaging Emi was. We didn’t just learn how to cook, we also had conversations about life in Japan, culture, and everyday experiences. We came away with not just new cooking skills, but also a deeper appreciation for Japanese life and hospitality. If you’re looking for a cooking class that goes beyond recipes and gives you a genuine, heartfelt connection to Japanese culture, Emi’s class is absolutely perfect. Highly recommended!
My husband (who is not a cook) and I thoroughly enjoyed this class. You can pick three items to make from a list of Japanese food so you can try something new. Emi is a fun host and speaks English very well. We had an interesting conversation on all sorts of topics and I learned so much about Japanese culture. I highly recommend this class for a unique and personal experience in Tokyo.
Emi was wonderful and even took us to the supermarket afterwards to help us buy Japanese ingredients to take home with us.. dishes were authentic and delicious!!
We had a 2h cooking lesson with Emi and it was fantastic! The lesson took place in Nerima, easily accessible from the center of Tokyo but a lot less crowded. Emi was extremely welcoming and a great teacher, we learned a lot, had interesting conversations about Japan and culture differences and of course we ate some amazing food prepared during the lesson. We are looking forward to try again these recipes on our own. Please try this lesson with Emi, our trip wouldn't have been the same without it. I highly recommend it!!
We had a bunch of fun cooking with Emi. She’s a phenomenal teacher and also offered a lot of insight about Japanese culture. We had a great time discussing each other’s cultures. I highly recommend to anyone who wants to learn how to make authenticate Japanese dishes while in Japan.
I booked Emi’s cooking class as a surprise for my girlfriend during our trip to Japan. The preparation was very smooth. Emi contacted me in the weeks leading up to the class to arrange everything from pickup location to our dietary preferences. The class itself was exactly what we were looking for. As non-Japanese speakers it can be difficult to experience ‘authentic’ Japan. We not only learned how to cook authentic Japanese recipes, but also got the chance to discuss so many topics from 80’s Japanese music to the best hiking spots. All in all a great experience, one of the highlights of our trip. Would 100% recommend!
My husband and I had a lovely and memorable evening with Emi in her cozy apartment. Emi reached out to us upon booking to confirm what we wanted to make and a meeting location (months in advance) and also checked in with us the morning of the class. She taught us how to make karaage, shrimp okonomiyaki, and pork onigiri. Everything turned out delicious, but the best part of the experience was definitely spending time with Emi herself. She shared the recipes with us so we can make the dishes when we get home and remember our trip.
We had such a nice time cooking with Emi in her home. It has been the highlight of our trip so far. Emi is very warm and hospitable and a great teacher! All of our food was delicious with easy to follow instructions and Emi is great company as well!
What a fun activity that we will enjoy long term. Emi was an excellent teacher and provided great recipes that we can use at home, taking a bit of Japan back with us.
We had a great time learning real at home Japanese cooking. Emi was very friendly and happy to answer any questions and chat about life in Japan as well! Easy to learn from and take these ideas back to your own kitchen!
Our cooking class with Emi was an unforgettable experience. Emi was patient, knowledgeable, and we had lovely conversations with her while learning how to cook tempura, tonkatsu, and onigiri. I can’t wait to cook these at home to remember our lovely morning with Emi. Thank you so much for having us!
We had a wonderful time cooking with Emi! She was a joy to chat with and she gave clear instructions as well as clear explanations for cooking and overall Japan questions. Best of all, the food was delicious and we are confident we can the make the recipes for our family. Emi was also very accommodating for food allergies.
Emi was wonderful. Very hospitable, inviting and speaks English well. She's a great conversationalist and we learned a lot about Japanese culture during our time with her!
We thoroughly enjoyed the cooking class and highly recommend booking with Emi if you’re visiting the Tokyo area. She is very sweet and the time spent with her was fun and informative. We’ll be trying out the recipes we learned on our own once we get home.
Thanks a lot, Emi! Cooking with you on my birthday in your cozy home was a lot of fun, educational, and of course, delicious. :) 100% recommended. Greetings from Germany and Venezuela!
We enjoyed our cooking class and sampling some traditional dishes, but the experience was much more than that. It was a delight meeting Emi and she shared so much about Japanese culture and language. She is very easy to communicate with, which is good for getting information about transport, for example.
Emi was an excellent host and her recipes were delicious! Our favourite dish was the Onigiri. Emi was also helpful in directing us on how to best get to her place from our hotel in Asakusa. Highly recommend
We thoroughly enjoyed our cooking experience with Emi. It was easy to book and she had great communication with us about the class and meeting point. We selected Okonomiyaki, Tempura vegetables and Ginger pork. It was a lot of fun preparing the dishes and they were all delicious. We are looking forward to making them at home. It was also nice to meet a Tokyo local and hear about Tokyo life. At the end we visited the local supermarket with Emi and this too was a fascinating experience. We thoroughly recommend doing this cooking class with Emi. Thanks Emi.
We had a great time cooking with Emi! The food was delicious and we enjoyed learning more about Japanese cuisine. I would recommend to small groups visiting Tokyo!
It was a wonderful experience, we cooked together with Emi, she guided us step by step to create excellent gyoza, karaage (fried chicken) and salmon with seaweed and edamame. Then we had dinner together, talking lovingly about Japan, Italy and the anime & manga that we have always been passionate about. it was a great choice. Thank you Emi, Barbara & Ermanno
Emi is a wonderful host, great cook and teacher. We had a really lovely evening and learned not just to prepare some traditional food, but also got an insight into customs and culture of Japanese cuisine. And the food was fabulous! Emi is very easy going, with a good sense of humour and an open mind. We can thoroughly recommend this cooking class and special experience inTokyo. Thank you so much, Emi.
We booked this at late notice and really happy we had a time slot that worked well. Communications leading up were excellent, and we had some input into what meals were cooked. Emi's english is excellent (our Japanese is almost non-existent) so we had great conversation throughout the preparation, cooking, eating and cleanup. Food was simple and excellent...one of the highlights of our trip.
Beautiful experience ! You get an insight about Japanese cooking and EMI is very Knowledgeable about the city and culture. She was a wonderful host and after the class she took us to a very cute traditional pottery and tea shop. Don’t miss it if you have the chance. IT’S A MEMORABLE AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCE ! ありがとうございます!
Emi was delightful. She was very organised about staying in contact with us from the moment of the booking and she chose an easy meeting location. We had a choice of dishes to make, and she lead us step-by-step through the preparation and cooking, making sure we all had something to do. Everything was very simple and uncomplicated. The dishes were very tasty, and she gave us the recipes so we can make them at home! Most importantly, Emi was a great host. She made lots of nice conversation, gave us tips and advice for our trip in Tokyo, and even some ideas for our upcoming days in Kyoto. I would recommend cooking with Emi. A highlight of our trip.
It was a really pleasant, fun afternoon that we had with Emi. She taught us how to cook Katsu, Tempura and Okonomiyaki. Apart from that, we learnt from Japan culture as well as tell her about ours. It was a very nice cultural exchange. We would recommend it to any Tokyo visitor. Buen provecho y muchas gracias.
This cooking class is well worth your while if you have the time for it. Emi was very friendly, was willing to answer our many questions and made sure we understood how to prepare each dish. In short, a wonderful time.
Emi is fantastic! The things we made were truly delicious and we plan to make them again back home! She’s wonderful to talk to as well. Highly recommended.
Attending Emi’s cooking classes was an exceptional experience that stood out from other cooking classes I've taken. Emi’s class focused on teaching practical and useful skills that I can confidently use to prepare Japanese food. Unlike other classes where you might learn something elaborate and never replicate it, Emi’s lessons were hands-on and incredibly applicable. Emi herself is lovely and welcoming, making us feel right at home in her kitchen. The food we prepared was absolutely delicious, and sharing the meal together was a highlight of the evening. We had a wonderful time learning about each other over dinner, which added a personal touch to the experience. Emi’s passion for cooking and warm hospitality made the class not just educational but also immensely enjoyable. I highly recommend Emi’s Japanese cooking classes to anyone looking to discover new ingredients and ways to prepare delicious food while having a delightful time.
