Our guide Takaharu is an accomplished retired urban planner and the perfect source to walk us around Omotesando and a bit of Aoyama. Takaharu san showed us several examples of outstanding 20th and 21st century buildings by architects like Kenzo Tange, Kisho Kurokawa and Tadao Ando. He accompanied his erudition with an iPad where he had curated information about the architects, other examples of their works, and structural and construction drawings. It was a great way to spend the morning and we certainly felt better informed afterward. Communication with Showcase Tokyo was easy and clear.

We were very keen to see Art & Architecture in Tokyo. We had given an outline on the places/spaces we would like to see. And what we got to see with our very able & informative guide Yuki, was phenomenal. In the prescribed duration of 3.5 hours, she took us through amazing buildings, explained the various design aspects. , pointed out elements of design and also took us to an out of the world Art Gallery and a very quaint cafe at the end of the tour. It was curated so well that it felt like Yuki shared the same passion that we do for Architecture. We were satisfied 100%. Much gratitude to Yuki for making this tour a memorable one for us!
My experience with Yoshi was nothing short of FANTASTIC! I admire the preparation and professionalism he has and also the tons of documented photos he had for each architect showcased during the tour. The dedication to detail made me appreciate the tour even more. I also had a great time chatting with him during our break and our walk along Omotesando. I would gladly recommend for first-time visitors interested in architecture within Harajuku and Omotesando!
It was an excellent experience. Our guide Yoko was professional, with good research showing us wonderful examples of the modern architecture in Tokyo.
Our guide Yoshi was very knowledgeable and passionate about architecture but we often had difficulty understanding him and feel we missed alot of information.
My partner and I like to start any trip with a walking tour to get our bearings and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with Taka. We learned so much about architecture and development in Tokyo as well as the famous architects and designers that have left their mark on Harajuku. I highly recommend this tour, particularly for those interested in getting a bit more context on the built environment.
Had an AMAZING experience! Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about the local buildings and architects. She adjusted the tour to things we were most interested in and also increased the length of the indoor parts of the tour because it was so hot outside. I would highly recommend this if you’re interested in architecture/design/local culture!
A lot of walking (in a good way!), a wonderful slice of the community and culture. Our guide, Aki, was knowledgeable and patient, great experience!
Both guides were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the tour tremendously. We viewed and went inside several fascinating buildings
Our guide was so professional and knowledgable! She came prepared with a notebook of photos of the various buildings that she showed us, photos of the architects and other of their projects, and a passion for architecture that was infectious! She has obviously made a study of architecture and her enthusiasm was evident. Her english was excellent as well, which made it easy for us!
Taka is truly an expert and gem of architecture in Tokyo! He really knows the historical references, hidden gems and best insta shots. He was very knowledgeable and curated our tour based on our interests in the heat of Tokyo. Could have walked in and out of buildings for hours to learn more about the cool, interesting buildings in Tokyo. Thank you Taka for showing us your Tokyo!
Yoshi was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. He had great pictures and information ready. He knew every detail of the construction and architecture we looked at.
Yuki was the sweetest person I met in Japan. She gave us a fantastic private architecture tour and brought us to some very cool buildings with very creative details that we would not have seen during our own exploration. Yuki absolutely loved architecture and was very passionate about the material she spoke about. It was a great experience. She also allowed me to complain about the heat and humidity without getting frustrated and suggested multiple stops to get something cold to drink and cool off in the air conditioning! Thank you Yuki.
Omotesando, often referred to as Tokyo’s Champs-Élysées, is renowned for its stunning architecture, high-end boutiques, and sophisticated atmosphere. Our family recently embarked with our guide Mari on an architecture tour of this stylish district, and it proved to be a delightful and educational experience for everyone. Mari made the architecture tour of Omotesando an enriching experience that offered a blend of high-end modern design and thoughtful traditional elements. Each building we visited had its unique charm, making the tour engaging for both adults and our teenage children. The district’s mix of cultural and commercial spaces ensured that there was something for everyone. Mari allowed us to enter shops that we found interesting and offered us advised on nearby areas that we would enjoy. We highly recommend this tour for families looking to explore Tokyo’s architectural gems in a vibrant and sophisticated setting.
Within a short distance on Omotesando and Miyuji Avenues, there are awesome buildings by five Pritzker prize winners. My tour was with Taka, a retired architect, who showed me on his I-pad photos of the architects, background info, floor plans as well as where to stand to get the best photos. We began with an icon, Kenzo Tange’s National Yoyogi Gymnasium. Then we walked down the street to see Akinisa Hirata’s Tokyo Plaza Harakado with the planted rooftop vertical garden. Next, we visited inside and outside the convex and concave glass of the Prada store by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron’s. Finally, Tadao Ando’s Collezione with half the building being underground. There were numerous other amazing buildings. I was very impressed with this tour and recommend it highly.
This personal tour gave me a good insight of Japanese architecture and the accomplishments of many Pritzer's winners. I highly recommend it. Mr. Yoshiyuki Itoi was an excellent guide, making the three hour walk worthy .
Wow! Do not miss this Architecture walking tour with Eriko!! We could have spent the whole day with her - so interesting, very engaging, a great sense of humor and professional. We would highly recommend Eriko and the tour
Amazing tour with Eriko! We are very much architecture amateurs and this tour really opened our eyes to all sorts of design, structure and cultural concepts in the buildings and the area. We loved this tour and would highly recommend it!! And, Eriko is absolutely delightful company, smart and a great communicator. Thanks, Eriko!!
Enjoyed our private walking tour very much. We saw a wide variety of interesting architecture and our guide was excellent. Her English was perfect and she was very lovely to be with.
The tour is so great! We really have a lot of fun! Our tour guide Yoko is very knowledgeable and helpful. We know Tokyo architecture much more after this tour. It worths every penny! Thank you very much Yoko!
A great walk through Harajuku and Omotesando, looking at both exterior and interior spaces. Aki was able to tailor the tour to our specific preferences and guide us through the neighborhoods.
"We had a most interesting architecture tour through Omotesando yesterday. Our guide Aki was perfect, he not only showed us the buildings from outside, but took us inside whenever possible and explained the structure of the buildings. He also had all the information on the architects and related building they created all over the world. Just a perfect tour. Arigato gozaimasu, Aki!"
The tour was great - YUKI was a lovely and informed guide, good at conversation and relating to our particular interests in contemporary architecture. We saw the more notable spaces and buildings on Omote-sando , like the structure built by Tadao Ando and had the treat of seeing and learning about how he respected the existing treescape and honored the older buildings on the site. We saw a space designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, one of my favorite photographers, and learned about the urban design aspect of how the road led to the Imperial Shrine and the plantings done in honor of the shrine. And so much more! Really informative enjoyable and worth it. Thanks to YUKI we had a great first day in Tokyo.
We had a wonderful tour with our guide, Aki! He was extremely knowledgeable about the architecture in the area, telling us more about the designers of several buildings and relating it to other sites we’ll see later on our trip. Would highly recommend!
Mari is a great guide. We saw great Architecture . She was very well informed and has perfect English.
This tour is an absolute must for anyone interested in contemporary architecture. Our guide Yuki was a generous and extremely knowledgeable. Just book. You won’t regret it.
Wow the tour was very educational and fun. The tour covered a lot of Architectural buildings in a very efficient way and included very needed time for tea and dessert. Thank you, Yuki!
Our guide, Aki, walked us around Omatosando and explained us everything about the most iconic and interesting buildings in the area. The tour was very relaxed, and, despite the July heat, we enjoyed walking in the less busy backstreets and inside shops on and behind the main road. At the end of the tour, Aki kindly recommended a noodle shop that serves cold noodles and walked us all the way to the restaurant. Highly recommended for anyone interested in contemporary architecture and in visiting one of Tokyo’s nicest areas with a local.
It was very exiting and informative 3 hours. We saw a lot and enjoyed not only the well known places but hidden germs too.
This tour was an amazing journey led by Yoko through some of the Tokyo contemporary architecture signed off by internationally renown architects! Yoko was able to relate these buildings to history, social context and even japanese traditions. It was good pace, well balanced , including even a time to have tea in the iconic wood covered building Sunny Hills by Kengo Kuma. I highly recommend both Yoko and the tour!
Loved Omotesando and our guided tour brought us to some hidden corners we otherwise would’ve not discovered. Great opportunity for architecture lovers and enthusiasts.
Host cancelled before our tour - I found out only when I was revisiting the info to figure out when/where to meet. Called their number: no response. Texted our assigned tour guide: no response. Contacted Viator/Tripadvisor: they confirmed I was cancelled but couldn’t offer a remedy. We were cancelled AFTER confirming and getting assigned a guide. Unprofessional, please be aware this could happen to you. Luckily the tour itinerary was sent to me beforehand so we can essentially do it on our own. But still…
Our guide Yoshi-san was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the architecture, architects and history of the buildings he showed us. He came prepare with notes and illustrations of other works by these famous architects. He had a very relaxed manner and spoke very good English and was an excellent communicator. He answered and addressed all our enquires and interests about these very interesting buildings in this district. We highly recommend Yoshi-san for this tour. It was one of our best tours in our 3 weeks of touring Japan.
Yoko, my guide, was well versed in the field of design and explained differences in the architectural design, how they evolved over time, etc. All the things I was hoping to hear. Explored a little of historical features but spent time on how the Harajuku area grew since the 60s up to present architectural influences. Very much what I was looking for and I would highly recommend.
A most enjoyable and interesting tour. Yuka, my tour guide was knowledgeable and gave an excellent overview of the architecture of the area, which I would not have been able to do on my own.
I did the Omotesando Architecture tour with Aki as my guide. It was informative and eye opening to learn so much about the thoughtful and considered approach to Japanese architecture. I visited many buildings I would not have discovered without this tour. A valuable way to spend your time, in my opinion! I especially liked walking through some of the back streets as well, which I would perhaps not have ventured on my own. They contained little gems of architecture- and coffee! Aki was very polite and knowledgeable, which I appreciated.
We booked the Omotesando Tour with Yoshi. He was very knowledgeable and kind. His English was good so it made it easy to follow him and he enjoyed sharing what he knew with us. He took his time to tell us all about the various architectural landmarks we saw along the way, He also put together a small booklet with all of the landmarks listed with pictures for easy reference later on. We did start to run out of time towards the end so we needed to rush through the back 1/3rd of the tour which was a shame because there were a lot of interesting things to review T the end. He shared his personal story with us as well which I found to be very fascinating. My kids (ages 16, 11) were with me and my wife. My son is interested in architecture so he found it engaging. My daughter who is 11 was a good sport but probably a bit too young for this sort of tour which got detailed about buildings and famous architects. She wanted to stop in a bunch of the fun stores along the way. I really loved hearing about the Yoyogi Olympic Stadium in particular, as well as the Sunny Hill Building in Minami Aoyama. I would recommend it for anyone who has an interest in architecture and wants to do a deep dive on an interesting neighborhood. May be too detailed for someone who wants a cursory view and wants to move through Tokyo history quickly.
My sister (who is an architect) and I just took this wonderful tour with Aki. We were impressed by his breadth of knowledge. We meandered through areas of the city that we never would have found ourselves. We were surprised that there were so many architectural gems within this walking tour. We recommend taking this tour 100%! And if you are lucky, you will get Aki too!
Very very happy that we had joined this Architectural Tour and Yoshi is very knowledgeable & attentive to our questions. Highly recommended !
The variety of structures and knowledge of the guide regarding the architecture was superb. She went out of her way to find unique works as well as tucked away gems. Definietly worth it.
Best day in Tokyo. Fantastic tour led by Hal. Opened our eyes, made us look, and shined a whole new light on Tokyo. An architectural play group for the great and the good of design. Book and go!! You will be forever thankful for these few hours.
Highly recommend for architects, designers or anyone interested in architecture! Yoshi was very knowledgeable and friendly. His tour was the highlight of visiting and learning about Tokyo!
I spent a very enjoyable few hours wandering through the Harajuku area with Hitoshi, a knowledgable & thoughtful guide. We saw not only the better known iconic buildings on the main streets, but also small buildings hidden away down narrow laneways: for me the more interesting, as they are far removed from common building styles where I live in Australia. I would not have found those without the benefit of local expertise, & Hitoshi was able to detail the provenance of each & show me photos of other works by the same architects. An interesting journey, & a highlight of my stay in Tokyo. Would definitely recommend.
I am an Architect from the United States that has noted the excellent Architecture of Japan since the 1970's when i was in Architecture School. So naturally i was very excited to make my first trip to Tokyo. My tour guide was Yuka and we had a very nice time together walking through the neighborhoods and streets of Omotesando. She was able to discuss the various projects knowledgeably and was also a very pleasant companion. the tour was very flexible. We made some adjustments on the fly and spend more or less time at each project as we saw fit. I felt like i was talking with someone who knew the projects well and was adding to my understanding of the work. I highly recommend her company for anyone wishing to have such a tour.
I expected the tour to focus on the tall iconic sky scrapers you see on the Tokyo sky-line. But instead we looked at smallish buildings designed by cutting edge Japanese architects with distinctive styles and which demonstrated innovation and imagination. They are buildings we would have missed on our wanderings through Tokyo, so it was very worthwhile to have an opportunity to have them pointed out, and to learn about them.
The visit was lovely, a lot of details on the history, the architecture, the architect, the neibourg. The guide, yuka, was well prepare and lovely. If you want to learn a lot and see thing that you will miss be yourself, I highly recommand the tour.
My guide Hal took me on a very interesting tour of the architecture in this shopping district with a rich 20th and 21st century history. The tour covered a wide variety of architectural styles, from the 1920s, through the 1964 Olympics, to buildings by top architects of today. The distances were never far from one building to the next, so it was an easy walk. But there were lots to see. Hal was knowledgeable and her enthusiasm for architecture showed through. My best tour of the trip. Thank you, Hal-san!
Our guide Yoko was friendly, articulate, knowledgeable, and extraordinarily generous with her time. We took welcome coffee and lunch breaks in interesting venues, but did not complete the nominally 3 hour tour until nearly 3:30 as we loitered over building details, and Yoko kept finding more treasures to visit. Ended at the Nezu museum, well worth a visit, and also had time before our 10am start to walk most of the way up the beautiful avenue of trees to the Meiji shrine. Interesting contrasts between the commercial glitz of the main street and the intimate spaces behind. Thoroughly recommended.
Hal (Haruka), our tour quide, was absolutely wonderful and the sights featured on the tour were very interesting. Neither my friend nor I have much background in architecture, but Hal was quick to connect stops on the tour to our expressed interests. We covered a lot of the area, and I enjoyed stopping for a cup of tea and pineapple cake at one of the sights on the tour. I booked the tour with credit card points and would definitely recommend paying for it out of pocket.
Yuki , our guide was wonderful. This tour would suit anyone with an interest in design and architecture. From ultra modern, to mid century to tiny laneways with old homes/ shops. It’s also a wonderful introduction to Harajuku and trendy Ometesando.
