Hiro was our amazing guide for the day. His knowledge, kindness, flexibility and professionalism was outstanding! Nikko's blend of Shintoism, Buddhism and nature is spectacular and a cultural inspiration. Hiro added just the right amount of explanation at each spot. We highly recommend this tour, if you don't get Hiro, make sure to ask for a licensed guide. Kudos to Hiro: He was extremely helpful before we arrived in Japan, giving us very detailed instructions on how to purchase the necessary tickets for the day. Without his guidance we would have been lost. Transportation is very complicated in Japan, beyond the language barrier. Before we left the US, Hiro provided us with step by step PowerPoints and an itinerary. Because it was a holiday in Japan, everything was super crowded so we didn't do all he had planned. At the end of the evening, Hiro sent an updated itinerary for our scrapbook, along with a nice note. Rather than tipping, which is considered rude in Japan, we brought souvenirs from NYC and Phoenix just for him. We thoroughly enjoyed our day learning about Nikko and Japan through Hiro's lens.

Itinerary
Understand why “Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko” visiting the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and nearby shrines and temple. The most renowned shrine of “the Shrines and Temples of Nikko”-a Japan’s leading world heritage, is where Ieyasu Tokugawa, the great Shogun who started the flourishing Edo Period, is enshrined. Most of the shrine complex you see today was rebuilt in 17th century. The shrine contains 55 buildings including 8 national treasures and 34 listed buildings. The highlights are sumptuous carvings lacquered and richly coloured brilliantly, which you will gaze at craftsmanship assembled from all over the country. Do not miss the symbol of peace “Sleeping Cat”, and the “Three Monkeys” with the “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” poses!
Kegon Waterfall is the most famous of Nikko’s 48 waterfalls. Water from Lake Chuzenji falls 97 metres straight down to the rocks below creating a dynamic and artistic work of nature. A special lift takes visitors to the basin where the force and roar of the water can be witnessed close up! Impressive in any season, the waterfall looks particularly spectacular when surrounded by the fresh green leaves in May, house martins in June, or the “12 falls” - small streams of the frozen waterfall clad in blue ice - during January and February.
Lake Chuzenji is the largest lake in Tochigi, framed by 25 kilometres of incredible nature. The area used to be a popular summer resort for foreigners in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The villas of French and Belgian embassies can still be found here. You can enjoy seasonal charms by the lake. Walking trails surround the water’s edge and there is an excursion boat available on the lake. The views from the lake are spectacular, particularly when the cherry blossoms or azaleas are blooming or when the autumn leaves are turning. The “Koyo-meguri” tour, enjoying autumn leaves reflecting on the lake, is highly recommended.
“Senjogara” translates to battlefield and here it refers to a mythical battlefield where legends say that the gods of Mount Nantai and Mount Akagi fought once to claim the neighboring lakes as their own. Taking on the incarnation of a serpent and centipede respectively, they fought and intertwined repeatedly, creating this marshland. The battlefield has now changed to a battle of charms as various plants and fauna reside in the vast field, competing to charm the many visitors. With a wooden trail that spreads across the field, it completes the serene atmosphere of the place and complements the colourful scene. Take a hike along the trail for a personal experience with the plants and birds that visit the place. Or head over to the observation deck for a stunning panoramic view of the marshlands. Either way, be ready for a breath-taking sight that you will not regret!
Taiyuin (大猷院, Taiyūin) is the mausoleum of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, the grandson of Ieyasu. Iemitsu's lavish mausoleum complex resembles nearby Toshogu Shrine in its layout and architecture, but it was intentionally built somewhat more modest than the Toshogu, due to Iemitsu's deep respect for his grandfather. Taiyuin is the posthumous name of Iemitsu.
Rinnoji (輪王寺, Rinnōji) is Nikko's most important temple. It was founded by Shodo Shonin, the Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko in the 8th century. The temple's main building, the Sanbutsudo, houses large, gold lacquered, wooden statues of Amida, Senju-Kannon ("Kannon with a thousand arms") and Bato-Kannon ("Kannon with a horse head"). The three deities are regarded as Buddhist manifestations of Nikko's three mountain deities which are enshrined at Futarasan Shrine. A decade-long renovation of the Sanbutsudo was completed in spring 2019.
Tamozawa Imperial Villa (田母沢御用邸, Tamozawa Goyōtei) blends traditional Edo and early modern Meiji Period architecture throughout its 106 rooms. The villa was erected in Nikko in 1899, using parts of a residence that originally stood in Tokyo. Before being moved to Nikko, the building served initially as the Tokyo residence of a branch of the Tokugawa family and was later temporarily used as the Imperial Palace. In Nikko, it was enlarged into a summer residence and retreat for the Imperial Family, but suffered neglect after World War II. In the year 2000, the villa was opened to the public after extensive renovation works.
Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) was formed by an eruption of nearby Mount Nantai. This gorge near central Nikko is only a few hundred meters long and can be enjoyed from a pleasant riverside walking trail. Kanmangafuchi is also known for its row of about 70 stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased. This particular group of Jizo statues is alternately called "Bake Jizo" (Ghost Jizo), "Narabi Jizo" (Jizo in a line) or "Hyaku Jizo" (100 Jizo). The statues look out over the river and across to the Nikko Botanical Garden, but the botanical garden cannot be entered from the abyss.
Futarasan Shrine (二荒山神社, Futarasan Jinja) stands next to Toshogu in central Nikko. Much older than its more lavish neighbor, Futarasan Shrine was founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, the Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko and who also founded nearby Rinnoji Temple. Futarasan Shrine is dedicated to the deities of Nikko's three most sacred mountains: Mount Nantai, Mount Nyoho and Mount Taro. Futarasan is an alternate name of Mount Nantai, the most prominent of the three mountains.
Nikko Botanical Garden (日光植物園, Nikko Shokubutsuen) is owned and maintained by the prestigious University of Tokyo. As such, it is a branch of the university's main research garden, Koishikawa Botanical Garden in Tokyo. The garden was opened in 1902 for the purpose of collecting and studying alpine plants. It is spacious and quiet with a substantial network of paths that allows for pleasant walks and the viewing of the various labeled trees, plants and shrubs. The garden also offers a look into the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, although there is no direct connection between the garden and the abyss.
The Shinkyo Bridge (神橋, Shinkyō, "sacred bridge") stands at the entrance to Nikko's shrines and temples, and technically belongs to Futarasan Shrine. The bridge is ranked as one of Japan's three finest bridges together with Iwakuni's Kintaikyo and Saruhashi in Yamanashi Prefecture. The current Shinkyo was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some kind had marked the same spot for much longer, although its exact origins are unclear. Until 1973, Shinkyo was off limit to the general public. It underwent extensive renovation works in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and visitors can now walk across the bridge and back for an entrance fee.
Kirifuri Waterfall (霧降の滝, Kirifuri no taki) is an impressive, 75 meter high, two-tiered waterfall located below the Kirifuri Highlands, a few kilometers northeast of the temples and shrines of Nikko. The sight of the elegant falls cascading down the mountain provides a nice contrast to the surrounding foliage, which is lush and green in spring and summer and displays fiery shades of red, orange and gold in autumn. The name Kirifuri means "falling mist" after the fine mist that is created when the water crashes against the rocks at the bottom of the lower falls. The view may occasionally be obscured when mist or fog covers the valley. It used to be possible to hike down to the base of the waterfalls, but the trail down the mountain partially collapsed several years ago and has been closed ever since.
The Kanaya Hotel History House (金谷ホテル歴史館, Kanya Hotel Rekishikan) is a historical building in Nikko that served as the predecessor of the celebrated Kanaya Hotel. The house is open for the public to explore and provides a window into the Nikko of centuries past. It stands next to a bakery which also sells the admission tickets for the house. After the end of Japan's era of isolation, Nikko became a popular summer resort among the foreign diplomats and business people that arrived in the country. The Kanaya Hotel has been one of the premier hotels in the area for accommodating such guests and today stands as the oldest Western-style hotel in all of Japan. While the hotel is now located one kilometer down the road on a hill above the Shinkyo Bridge, its history began at the Kanaya Hotel History House.
Ropeway is closed for maintenance from January 16th, 2026 until August 31st, 2027. Located near the top of Irohazaka Slope, Akechidaira Plateau has sweeping views over a winding road and a dramatic mountain backdrop. Take the ropeway up to the observation platform for even more panoramic views, including Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji. Alternatively, you can join a hiking trail that runs from the lake to the observation platform via Akechidaira Plateau.

Seizo is a knowledgeable, passionate and genuinely interested guide who transformed our visit into an authentic immersion in Tokyo’s culture and history, expertly adapting to our interests while sharing profound insights about the city. Every hour spent with him was incredibly valuable—highly recommended for anyone seeking a meaningful experience beyond typical tourist attractions.
What a great day. Had the most wonderful tour guide, Karen. She helped us every but if the way and kept in contact till we met up. We travelled from Tokyo, Shinjuku for the day and gad the best time. Karen was simply a wonderful thoughtful tour guide. We are leaving tomorrow but had we of stayed longer we would have asked for her for another tour.
This is a wonderful experience and one every Westerner should consider when they visit Japan. It helps understand the country better. It is a very peaceful and restful place in a crowded sea. Our guide Seizo Kamiuto made everything much better with his explanation and he arranged the entire trip making it a much easier and more meaningful experience
We had the pleasure of spending the day at the Heritage sight in Nikko with Siezo, our favourite guide this trip. His English is excellent, he is polite, considerate, spent time and effort creating an excellent itinerary, arranged and paid for all the train tickets in advance, a total joy. Our whole day was an excellent experience, we kept to time and covered everything we had planned for. On any trip to Tokyo, Nikko should not be missed and Seizo would definitely be our choice to spend the day with. Very highly recommend
We had an unforgettable day touring Nikko with Yoshii. From the moment he picked us up at our hotel, he made our family feel comfortable, welcomed, and well taken care of. His knowledge of Nikko’s history and culture was truly impressive, and he shared it with such passion and clarity. He planned the day perfectly — balancing historical sites and scenic spots — and went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable experience. We especially appreciated his flexibility, kindness, and warm personality, which made the whole tour feel very personal and special. Being dropped off back at our hotel at the end of the day was such a thoughtful touch, and just one example of his excellent hospitality. We highly recommend Yoshii to anyone visiting Japan — he added so much value to our trip, and we’re very grateful for the time we spent with him!
Absolutely amazing tour in Nikko. We wanted to see something other than the city, someplace rich with history. Nikko did not disappoint. The architecture was breathtaking. Kyoko, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable regarding the shrine and the entire historical site. What a great experience! I highly recommend the Nikko tour along with our guide, Kyoko.
This is an excellent way to visit Nikko, the waterfalls and the beautiful temples in the area. Our tour guide, Yoshi, was incredible! Very knowledgeable, friendly, punctual, organized and took care of all the details to ensure we had an amazing experience.
My family had an unforgettable experience touring Nikko with Hiromi Murata on November 7, 2024. Nikko has beautiful and scenic landscape that will mesmerise you. It has a long and rich cultural history linked with historic figures of Japan. Hiromi is a fantastic local guide who has an incredible depth of knowledge about Nikko. She truly helped us understand the finer details of this beautiful place – from its rich history and culture to its breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems. We highly recommend her. Thank you, Hiromi, for a wonderful day in Nikko!
Our personal guide was wonderful and provided many services including guidance, history, assistance at our hotel for shipping luggage and arranging post trip transportation. Yoshii was friendly and a pleaser to be with. We would enjoy other trips under his guidance. He is a great representative of your company and we very much appreciate his service.
This is a full day tailored to your interest, time and the weather. Michio filled the day with engaging background of the region and discussion of Japan past and present. He is well travelled and a man of broad knowledge and keen wit. The trip was well structured, leisurely, and we shared a great lunch. At the end of the day I felt I had seen a significant part of Japanese history and had a better understanding of Japanese people.
Masami Aonuma is everything you could want in a tour guide and more—energetic, passionate, engaging, whole-hearted, knowledgeable, thoughtful, meticulous, proactive, flexible...the list of positive traits goes on and on. In spending the day with Masami, I not only saw the stunning view Nikko had to offer (Kaegon Falls, Lake Chusengi, Shinkyo Bridge, Toshogu Shrine), but also received a master class in Japanese culture and history. Masami and I extensively discussed the impact of different important events and philosophies (e.g., Shintoism, Buddhism, the Edo period, World War II, natural disasters, etc.) on the Japanese collective psyche. The conversation was nothing short of scintillating, and worth its weight in gold. If you're looking for someone who is not just a tour guide but also an amazing human being, Masami is your guy!
Fabulous experience , exploring Nikko with Kazu, our Government-Licensed Guide ( Tokyo Dept) who is fluent in English and French . My husband and I enjoyed learning about the extraordinary and amazing history and culture of Nikko. Kazu is a wonderful teacher/ guide , who answered our many questions with enthusiasm and patience . It was such a memorable day , and would definitely like to catch up with Kazu again , for another tour . Would definitely recommend Kazu as a high quality tour guide . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We had the most magnificent day with our guide, Michio, his experience navigating the rail systems in Tokyo city and out to Nikko on the Shinkansen evident right from the start. Michio was both personable and informative at every point of the day. A highlight for us was lunch in Nikko right beside Lake Chuzenji where handmade fresh soba noodles were made onsite and we chose to have them with local rainbow trout, grilled on hot coals. It was a meal we won't forget! Michio guided us seamlessly to the ropeway, waterfalls, stunning river walk and imperial summer villa at all times mindful of any special requests we had and our comfort. Back in Tokyo at the end of the day Michio even suggested somewhere for dinner, another authentic Japanese experience. We are looking forward to having Michio guide us later in our Japanese stay in Yokohama he is that good. Thank you Michio!
Koba was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable and anxious to please all members of our group. He brought Nikko to life for us.
I've been to Japan many times myself and have always wanted to take my parents to show them a bit of why I enjoyed visiting that country so frequently. This year, I was finally able to coax my parents to book a flight out to Japan with me. This was my first guided tour experience in Japan and I have to say that it was really well done especially considering that my group primarily consisted of senior citizens. Emi was very knowledgeable of the temples and shrines that we visited. I learned a lot more than I ever would have in just visiting Nikko and reading the placards on my own. I highly recommend this tour for those wanting to get some education out of their visit to Nikko!
Excellent choice if you are trying to avoid the crowd during autumn leaves viewing season. Yusuke is a professional guide and he kept in contact to find out our preferences prior to the trip & also suggested amendments depending on the weather as well. Managed to see many beautiful autumn leaves and enjoyed the food recommended as well. The guide is very customer centric, which makes the trip even more enjoyable.
We had an amazing trip to Nikko. We were asking a lot to do the shrines and the waterfalls in the same day but our guide, Yoshii, recommended we hire a car to make this possible. I’m glad we did as we only had the one day and it was great to see it all. We visited the shrines during the second half of the day, which was slightly rushed. Yoshii did a good job of adapting to our changes/ requests and we thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Our guide was amazing. Very helpful from first contact via email, to meeting us at the hotel. We had some railway things to sort, and this was no problem. Our guide was knowledgeable and listened to our needs. He made connections with us and had great knowledge of all places we wanted to visit. His instruction for subway and other trains was invaluable! He helped us ollect temple and shrine stamps which we will treasure forever. I pai tō rā. It was a wonderful day. Ngā mihi nui (many thanks and much kindness)
Our guide Kazu was wonderful. He was knowledgeable and delivered a fantastic day trip. I would highly recommend him.
Excellent day visiting Nikko. Seiji was a great guide, very knowledgeable, helpful and proactive. The temples were amazing. And the national park and water falls were beautiful.
Yumi has been the best guide ever! Ahe has explained very well the main places of Nikko. The best was the Toshogu Shrine, the Temple and the Imperial Villa. She is a great guide, sweet, patient, positive and we enjoyed a lot with her. We totally recommend her!
Tatsuo was excellent, showing me around, telling me about the stuff we saw, and on the travel showed pictures and explained about things we wouldn't see on this tour. Afterwards he took me to extra places on our way back going above and beyond!
Yuki was very knowledgeable and pleasant to spend a day with in Nikko. My husband and I enjoyed the tour and her company and definitely recommend her.
Our friendly, very informative guide Nobu was very helpful, pulling together a full day itinerary for us ahead of time from the sites we mentioned were of most interest to us. He was very efficient with the transportation logistics of getting from Tokyo and all around Nikko. Throughout the day he provided extensive details of the history and cultural aspects of each site. It made for a very educational and interesting day. At the end of the day Nobu was of great help showing us how to access the right train line for our next day’s activity. We would recommend him to anyone wanting a kind, professional, knowledgeable guide.
We have a good time with this tour even though the road and walk way conditions were not ideal due to snow footprints left from the previous day. Our tour guide - Mr Nobby is very knowledgeable about the Japanese history and its culture. We had learned a few interesting facts about this Nikko region and very appreciated the nature beauty of this region. We are very grateful to have Mr Nobby as our guide.
We had a wonderful day with our guide Asai-san and went to four sights on that single day. Asai-san was very well prepared and told us a lot about the different buildings and their meanings.
We were fortunate to have Mari Noda as our tour guide to Nikko. She was well organized and made the most of our limited time there. It was the perfect mix of nature and culture. We spent the morning exploring the park with views of mountains, fall colors, waterfalls, lakes, and a ride on a ropeway. Mari picked a great spot for lunch where we ate the local specialties of soba and yuba. In the afternoon, she gave an informative tour of Tosho-gu’s gates, courtyards and shrine. We were well taken care of during the trip. She offered to take photos, hailed a taxi back to the hotel, and gave us a sweet treat.
What a wonderful day with Yumi Aoyama! She met us at the train station and had pre-purchased our bus passes so we could get right on the bus to the waterfalls. We went in the morning to avoid the rush and it worked out perfectly. We spent the rest of the day touring the shrines and temples. She knew the area well and was able to give us information about mant places as we walked around. It seemed like we were always just ahead of the crowds. She found us a traditional Japanese restaurant for lunch and the whole day was just perfect. She waited with us until we boarded our train. I am so glad we booked this tour! Yumi was an excellent guide.
We had our tour in Nikko with Hideo Uenishi. The tour was amazing! Our guide was exceptionally well prepared. He went all the way to Nikko one day in advance just to make sure everything would go smoothly. Hideo san also knew the place very well. He was able to answer all our questions and gave us interesting bits of trivia on the way. To the extent where he knew to tell us which side of the train to sit on because the view is better. This made the Nikko tour very fun and enjoyable! We loved how attentive and thoughtful our guide Hideo san was. Especially when he offered to arrive earlier so he can give us a little tour of Tokyo on our way to the station. Not to mention he stayed overtime for 2 hours with us. I can't express how good of a guide Hideo san was and how fun the tour was. He really went above and beyond. Easily one of the best guides we've ever had! We would really recommend him for future tours!
I went to Nikko with Guide Minoru Asai, and he was phenomenal! Nikko is absolutely gorgeous and he filled me in on the history and background. It was also highly personalized and he worked around what I wanted to do, which made a huge difference as I wanted to go see some of the more natural sights that other people don’t typically go to. Completely worth the trip, and hope to return to Nikko in the future!
Our guide was Minoru Asai, he was absolutely great. Minoru was very helpful, super attentive, and helped us to arrange everything. He was very knowledgeable about the area, with lots of details and was always very keen to answer every question. Kids loved his explanations, we really recommend him!
It was an amazing experience with Nobu a very experienced and professional tour operator. It was surely a fun day and would recommend it to anyone. Try and visit in November though when the autumn leaves turn this place beautiful.
