Wonderful souvenir to keep, easy to do, the ladies are friendly and very nice, enjoyed it immensely.

My wife and I were part of a group of 3 for this experience. We were greeted at the door by our hostess, who was very friendly right from the beginning. Although the kimono itself is already made for you, you will have to cut them and iron the seems to creat the layers. Afterwards, you begin to select adds ons or accessories to really add personality to the kimono. This was a great value and I’d recommend this to anyone visiting Japan.
Absolute, wonderful way to upcycle kimonos into a style that is much more simple to wear and easier to move in, giving this gorgeous piece of clothing a chance to be appreciated more. There were differing levels of kimono offered, at an upcharge. The guides were incredibly skilled in making us feel comfortable and showing us what to do in an effective, but involved way! I left with a gorgeous peace of clothing and appreciation for the art that is kimono, would absolutely recommend! (And know that there are male options too)
It was a pleasant experience and lovely souvenir to take home with you. My family and I loved it so much, we always wanted to wear a kimono and now we get to take one home as a reminder that we made it in Japan. Our hosts were so friendly and helpful during our kimono making experience, I would highly recommend this activity on your schedule! Thank you again to our hosts for such a lovely and memorable time in Tokyo😊
This experience is truly unique in that you get to learn about kimono and find a beautiful already made kimono to alter/upcycle to fit perfectly. Our guide/tailor Akiko(Aki) was wonderful at explaining the different parts of the kimono, and what lines you are looking to showcase and why. She did an amazing job helping my husband and I pick and alter our clothing, which required adding a kimono panel for the skirt to make it fit a very western (plus) sized body. You get to be involved in the altering process by ironing the new seam together with sewing tape. This was an absolutely amazing experience that allowed me to have more understanding and experience of kimono culture while also getting a beautiful kimono to take home. There are multiple different levels of kimono ornamentation depending on whether you want a special occasion one meant for temples or one for everyday. There are several types of obi available to try on and you can end up purchasing everything if you desire for an additional fee which I did. The fancy obi are incredibly intricate and gorgeous and Aki told us that they take at least half an hour to make the bow. This is also quite an interesting experience for men to get to dress up and add their name and family crest in kanji/katakana for an awesome personalized look. This is a wonderful experience I highly recommend for anyone who has come to Japan for the first time, wants a kimono, and wants the chance to feel like a princess or samurai.
There was a huge variety of kimonos (and yukatas) to choose from, same with obis. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you can take your time trying on different garments and ask any questions that might pop up. It was a very fun experience, and I am so happy with my kimono. When I put it on again back home, I noticed a few places where the sticky tape at the hems had gotten loose, so make sure to be thorough when ironing it! And if like me you cannot remember fully how to put everything on, there are how-to videos on TikTok!
Why rent a kimono when you can buy a lovely vintage one and take it home?!?! I’m in love with mine! I upgraded for silk and love it! Very simple process, wonderful team and they speak excellent English. Looking to escape the weather or d something different? Make your own kimono, learn how to wear it and also a mini photo op!
The ladies are very kind and patient and the materials they provide are gorgeous!! What a fun and memorable experience to have while visiting Japan🙌☺️
Interesting experience but I cannot recommend it. The staff in the shop are outstanding, kind, patient and helpful. But while I knew the kimonos were vintage (therefore used), I did not expect holes, stains and fraying that I had to look out for. There were a lot to choose from, but, for me, the selection gave me the feeling that they had been there a long, long time and I was looking through what was left over. Maybe I’m too picky, but the only kimono I found that I truly liked was so stained that even the staff suggested I not choose it. My husband’s first choice had an obvious hole in the back. Also, there are a small pile of kimonos (and even a smaller pile of yukatas) that are included with the price of the workshop but the vast majority carry an additional fee, as do all of the accessories, most of which are really required to make a kimono work. Seriously, how could you successfully wear a kimono that’s been cut in half without the obi belt? Between my husband and myself, we spent an additional $113 (over and above the workshop fee) to have kimonos that could be worn, and mine is one that I really did not like, but the best I could find. I should have probably cut my losses and left, but I'd already paid the workshop fee and didn't really realize how much it was all adding up to until the end (my fault, as prices are clearly posted). Plus, I didn’t want to be negative during a vacation activity with other guests, which complaining and leaving would have been. And then there is the fact that the process is to cut a kimono in half and add hems and ties with iron-on tape. My ties (which the staff ironed on) pulled off the first time I tried to put the kimono on in my hotel room, rendering it unusable for the duration of our month-long trip. When contacted, the proprietor said I pulled too hard. Back in our hotel room I also found the obi belt, which I paid $40 for, had serious and noticeable fraying at multiple places that I hadn't thought to look for. I communicated my issues and pictures of the fraying to the proprietor of the shop who responded kindly. She offered a small 2,000 yen ($12.50) compensation for the obi belt fraying, even though she said this is to be expected with vintage pieces (huh???). Since that communication was over 6 weeks ago and she never followed up and provided that small, nominal compensation, I decided to write this review. It's clear some people like this activity, but it was not our thing. Also, please realize that a kimono, and all its accessories, is quite large even when folded, and will be surprisingly heavy and bulky to fit in a suitcase and lug around Japan for the rest of your trip.
This was a beautiful studio with lovely people, and I came away with a beautiful kimono. The woman there explained the history and traditions behind different types of kimonos very well, and I felt like I gained an understanding about what they represented. The craft activity is simple and meditative. The area is also very beautiful and secluded.
The vintage kimono selection for women was lovely with many different patterns and choices of fabric. There were lovely coordinating obis either with flat panels or fancy bows and coordinating cords. Several of the garments only needed minimal hemming to fit. The instructors also gave a guide for wearing. Would highly recommend this experience!
The experience was wonderful and the girls were beautiful and kind. The only complaint I have is the prices are not up front. Very basic material is a free kimono, but if you want better quality and pretty prints it can cost you up to 6000 yen more and it is 10000 yen for obi etc
Fun experience but we did have some problems with getting the obi on the next day. We didn’t reach out to the company due to the last min problems and we were already running late. But the kimonos are very pretty
One of the most memorable activities you can find in Japan. Why rent kimono & yukata when you can choose and have something cut to fit you? Look no further because the kind ladies at this wonderful establishment are the experts in choosing the perfect garment! Please add this activity to your vacation schedule you won’t regret it!!!
This was a great fun experience. The ladies spoke English well and guided me through the process. Their expertise in helping me choose pieces resulted in a beautiful kimono. The guys left with nice kimonos too. A quick experience that left enough time to enjoy the rest of the day.
I am so happy we had the opportunity to do this! :)
Our group of four women (all 60+) made a reservation to do this. Based on previous reviews, we were a little worried about making our way on our own so we called a taxi. The taxi dropped us within 20 feet of the house where this takes place. Look carefully and you will see a sign if you are the first appointment of the day. When you first enter, someone will explian the different price levels of the kimonos (basic is included in your price but you can choose a better one.). After that, you ascend some rather steep stairs to work on your kimono. What you do is cut your chosen kimono in two and then use basting tape to iron the edges. After, the workers will help you choose your obi and other accessories. You can buy these for a nominal fee as well. Just a word to the wise, you do not have to cut your kimono in two. One of my friends chose to leave hers in one piece. She plans to have it altered into something once she is home. Two of us decided to upgrade and buy our Obi and other accessories. All in all, we upgraded about $100 USD. Did I have buyers regret? A little but only because I worried about getting it all home with me. They were rather heavy. All in all, it was a delightful experience. If you arrive early, be sure and explore the area. There is a shrine/temple just around the corner. You can also wander over to the river and cross to a busier area. Just be sure and drop a pin so you can find your way back. You won't want to miss this.
If you want your own kimono and don’t know where to start or wish it was easier, this is a must do experience. The staff are super helpful and very kind to say the least! Pick your own kimono (nicer ones cost extra) and cut it in half! This makes it easier to put it on on your own later so you don’t have to be a folding expert. They assist you with hemming the edges of your cut kimono with heat activated tape and an iron, so be aware that for heavy use of your new easy wear kimono you may need to reinforce this later with stitching or updating the adhesive.
This was definitely an amazing experience for us in Tokyo. The fabrics are all so beautiful. The ladies were so pleasant to work with. We will cherish these kimonos and the memories we made forever!
We had a very enjoyable time and both my husband and I came away with our own beautiful kimonos for our next Japanese evening.
I had such a memorable kimono experience! Getting there took a little effort—one train mishap and an Uber rescue later—but once I arrived, it was actually very easy to find. From the moment I walked in, I loved the intimate setting. The experience felt personal, hands-on, and the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. I honestly wasn’t expecting to actually make my own kimono, so that was such a pleasant surprise. Watching everything come together—and then having the final piece perfectly tailored to my body—was amazing. Of course, we can’t forget the accessories… because who doesn’t love a good styling moment? Everything came together beautifully. The highlight for me was definitely the photoshoot. Aki and Rumí were so patient and made sure I got as many photos as I wanted—which is a big upgrade from my partner, who usually caps me at four 😂 I highly recommend this experience if you’re looking for something fun, elegant, and truly unique. You won’t regret it. And to make it even more special, I walked away with not just a beautiful kimono, but also two wonderful new friends who made the experience even better.
I really hate writing non-complimentary reviews but I feel that I need to, as my daughter and I really looked forward to this activity and unfortunately we were very disappointed. Firstly, there are no kimonos included in the price. Yes they say the yellow tagged ones are included but we didn’t see any of those. So we ended up paying additional ¥4,000 for one and ¥6,000 for another. To buy the obi would have been an additional ¥10,000 each so we declined. Secondly, there is no sewing. We used iron on hemming tape. Thirdly, the obi are all pre-made so there is no “kimono experience” getting dressed. The house overall is very tired and the “photography space” is one wall with a 3D printed background pinned on it, against which you take your own photos. I was really upset because I wanted to share a proper Japanese experience with my daughter. Overall this was an overpriced tourist photo op and a waste of our time and our money 😢
The ladies were great to work with! It was easy to pick and create our kimono. They took great care of my 11 year old while I work on my kimono. Also, they put my son's name on his kimono with vinyl. Super cute!
This workshop was a lot of fun. They have many pre loved kimonos to choose from, both women's and men's. The kimono is included in the workshop fee but if you prefer a more fancy one, you have to pay a little extra. For the women, you cut the kimono in half to make a skirt and jacket. The men print their name on the front. They have all the accessories available (obi etc) to use for photos or to purchase. Finding our way to the location was a little challenging with the given instructions. I should have just put the address into Google maps. We were there for about 2 hours. Highly recommended. Everyone on the cruise ship admired our kimonos.
An amazing experience! The fun of picking a kimono and being part of reworking it. The staff were lovely and it was a really enjoyable activity!
This was a fun experience. We got to make our own kimono we can take home. The young woman helping us was so kind. There were plenty of kimono options. They do have some that are free with the experience and others that are extra depending on the material and style. We learned about the formal, semi formal, and everyday styles, plus young and older style depending on sleeve length. An absolute must do.
Really great — very clearly explained the process and got to pick the kimono and it was a simple process and I took it with me (: Slightly out the way location wise but worth it if you pair it with Ueno.
You can choose from a variety of Kino prints, with some costing extra, but the extra cost wasn't insane. The studio setting was nice and comfortable, clear communication, and simple construction techniques are easy to accomplish in the time given. I really enjoyed this experience and left with the altered pieces that I can wear separately or together.
Amazing - choosing a vintage kimono, sitting on tatami, speaking with the lovely team. Far better than hiring a kimono!
Fantastic experience! They were very friendly and helpful, and the kimonos that we made were gorgeous.
It was a great experience! As a solo traveler I struggle a bit to join activities alone, but I really enjoyed this and I'm glad I did it. The kimono I got is gorgeous, and the ladies from the store were super nice. I had a really nice time chatting with them and with the couple that I shared the session with while working on our kimonos. I definitely recommend it if you want a nice experience and a great souvenir from it!
We had a great time! Everyone was really helpful and nice. I would absolutely recommend this for other people. I'm a big person so I knew that more than likely I wouldn't be able to get one for myself. I might have been able to find a womans kimono that fit me, because they had a lot to choose from, but I was thrilled to get some for my kids too. I'm almost 6ft and over 300lbs so I'm a hard sell lol. I did get an obi for me. I plan on framing my kids kimonos so we can keep them safe and display them. I am so sorry if I didn't put them on the kids correctly, I promise that I tried lol
Had fun with making my own kimono with Akira! She spoke Japanese and English, also a little Korean. I went by myself and there was one other person that joined the session. I was able to buy the exact accessories after making the kimono that I used for the photo session. Depending on your kimono fabric and accessories the price could be 5-10k yen more, but the basic kimono comes with cost of experience. I love mine and making it was simpler than I thought it’d be. I think non-crafters wouldn’t have any trouble with this. We started and finished within the allotted 90 minutes and that’s with some chatting. Shop is in quiet neighborhood and there was a sign out front so I knew I had the correct building when ringing the doorbell.
You will arrive at a ladies home in the older district. At first, you’ll think your loss not in the right place, but you are. They have preowned kimonos that you can choose from and then they cut it to fit you and you help them tape up your seam, etc., and pick out your different parts of the kimono and colors you like.So it’s a really unique experience. On average, we spent an extra $55-$60 each on a female and a male kimono. You don’t have to, but I couldn’t even find the free ones they talked about. We were on a cruise though and were all of our commodities to dinner one night and they were truly appreciated. Even if you So it’s a really unique experience. This might have been one of the best experiences I have had. You feel a little odd to begin with as you wait outside a random house in a back road in the middle of Koto City, and you are only sure you are in the right place because of the sign! But once the door is open you are greeted by the most amazing group of ladies who are excited to have you join in the Kimono adventure. Once you enter the house (and remove your shoes) you are welcomed and given a short history lesson about the kimonos. You are then allowed to select your kimono, there are four levels, ones that come with the experience, then three additional cost types (good but may be stained, better with fewer stains, best with minimal stains). I must admit the "included one" are very few, so expect to pay a few thousand yen extra, but honestly, it's worth it to have one of these amazing garments. After you have selected your kimono, you head to the work room, where you are handed a pair of scissors and told to cut. It feels like sacrilege, but you are lead through the process of cutting and hemming the garment to your size. Once fitted you get to pick your obi and accessories, and it's time for photos! Afterwards you can keep everything (with a small cost for the obi and accessories) or you can return the parts and head home with just the kimono. I recommend buying everything there, as the tourist areas that rent/sell kimonos are triple the price. The whole experience lasts 1 1/2 - 2 hours but feels like only a short time. It's amazing to be able to have a genuine kimono to take home, especially one as easy to wear as this. You really don't need any skill to take part, and the whole atmosphere is welcoming and fun. My only recommendation is to wear lightweight clothes as your kimono will be fitted over your street wear, in my case that involved a very thick, hot sweater!
Beware of choice paralysis! The selection to choose from is big. And when they hand you the fabric shears to cut the chosen kimono, anxiety could kick in. I felt in agony eyeballing the hemming. It turned out great though! Wore my new kimono outfit later that evening to a geisha experience and received plenty of compliments, including of the attending geisha. So this was a total winner!
This was such a wonderful experience and the staff was so helpful in creating such custom kimono to fit us.
This was a perfect workshop i allways wanted to try. The process was very easy, i had a wonderfull time talking with the host during the workshop and i have a beautifull yukata to remember it by. Thank you so much for the pictures as well that were sent after since my phone battery was dead unfortunately, this was a lovely day for me to remember! 10/10!
You do not make a kimono as the name implies. The process is to choose a kimono and then they encourage you to cut it in half. You end up with a skirt and jacket not a kimono. Not all kimonos are included in the price. Many are priced $20, $40 or $60 extra. There is a large selection and you have to exam each one to make sure it's long enough and not stained. It can be difficult if you have an issue with making decisions, and the staff is not happy to have to refold the kimonos if you need to exam a lot of them, as you can imagine. Once you have chosen a kimono they take you up some steep and narrow stairs to the dressing area. Both men and women are in the one room so wear an under shirt since anything else will be bulky under the kimono. The "rental" of the accessories is only to dress you in the kimono in the shop. You cannot leave the premises but you can buy these accessories. After you are dressed you can take pictures and then get undressed. You pay for your kimono if you chose one that is not included in the price and accessories if you decide to buy them there. The time allotted of 90 mins was not enough and they had to rush our dressing. The attendant explained at the beginning that they were not a professional kimono dresser so I suppose the end result was pretty good, especially since they were rushed.
Unfortunatly i was a little dissapointed in this experience, there was no information given or any history. Be aware that there could be an extra cost for kimono. There was only a small selection of kimonos included without an extra cost . Its an interesting idea but do not believe worth the cost
We visited this kimono shop and were warmly welcomed by a group of sweet, talented women who made the entire experience unforgettable. They helped us choose from a stunning selection of vintage kimonos — with options to fit everyone from very petite to extra large — and guided us through the process of refurbishing and tailoring them to fit perfectly. We were able to participate throughout, learning about each part of the outfit. The staff helped us dress in the multi-layered kimonos, making sure every detail was just right. As we worked, we chatted about our time in Tokyo, and they offered thoughtful suggestions for places to visit and things to do. They were especially kind and encouraging to my daughters, creating such a warm, supportive atmosphere. This experience was by far their favorite activity in Japan — and one we’ll always remember fondly. Thank you to everyone at the shop for making us feel so welcomed and special!
We absolutely loved this experience and Kiko and her staff were delightful. We did get lost on the way despite the very good directions, but Kiko came to find us on the street. I was so excited to go home with my kimono and obi purchase(with other accessories ) There are free standard kimonos but as I wanted something I really loved I did an upgrade. My friend chose the free one as it was her personal style. I would absolutely go back again and take someone else there to experience it also. Just one small tip, I would recommend for ladies that you might consider buying a pretty hair clip or accessory before you go to really complete the look.
We would totally recommend this experience to anyone who wants to take home a unique, beautiful, one of a kind souvenir from Japan. We arrived a few minutes early, yet the 2 ladies welcomed us in. They explained how the entire process would go, then we went to work. First thing was to choose a kimono. There were so many different kimonos to choose from and we all agreed that this was the hardest part of the experience, especially since we knew we would be choosing the upgraded kimonos. Once we chose our kimono, the 2 ladies lead us upstairs where we put the kimono on so they can fit it to our body. Then we cut the kimono in 2 pieces and pressed hemming tape to create a new hem. We were done with our part, then the real magic began. They placed the bottom on us first with an elastic belt to fit, the inner white collar was next, then the top, and finally the obi (another hard decision because there we so many beautiful obis to choose from and once again, we knew we would be buying it so it made the decision even harder). OMG, we all looked so beautiful and they offered to take many photos of us. Definitely an experience to remember!
It was a simple process. The kimonos are beautiful. Oto Ha was very helpful. I came away with information and a beautiful kimono!
This was such a great experience! Picking out a beautiful kimono and customizing It to how you want! I’m a bigger woman but they made It possible for me to fit in It which i loved! All the ladies who work there are a pleasure as well. I HIGHLY recommend anyone who comes to Tokyo to experience this!
In the workshop you are given an opportunity to choose and fit a vintage kimono and all the accessories necessary to wear it properly as well as friendly guidance through the fitting and dressing process. The kimonos vary a lot, so you will be able to find a suitable one. There are some basic ones, they are included in the price — but if you want something more sophisticated there is an extra charge. I paid 11k ¥ for the full set of kimono, collar, obi and so on — and I assume the experience s totally worth trying.
Incredibly fun and informative experience! The host was incredibly kind! Definitely something every tourist should consider doing!
You can choose at least one cloth from the vintage Kimonos, if which almost all cost extra (2'000-6'000yen). There are also some Haori (Jackets) available for purchase. The shop is charming and the staff very friendly. For other Accessories you have to pay extra.
Beautiful experience. The Kimonos were lovely. I enjoyed asking several questions about Kimonos and the history. The ladies were friendly and kind. The only advice I would add is to possibly have a small section where a history / information about the tradition and wearing of Kimonos is told ( i like to learn), but I asked enough questions. Nonetheless, I would still highly recommend !! There are several Kimonos that are included in the price, however, I wanted a more fancy one so I purchased one of the more elaborate ones. The prices for the ones not included were not unreasonable. Great experience and I would go back.
This was a lovely experience. The ladies were so nice and patient with my daughters. The kimonos are vintage and beautiful. We had a great time.
