Wow, from the moment you walk in you feel & notice something unique. Everything about this experience has meaning, discipline, respect. Daichi & his team take you through a 2 hour immersive learning & educational experience that is beautiful and at times confronting & challenging & definitely takes you out of your comfort zone. I loved it. Time just flew by. Just be ready with throat lozenges as you learn how to yell & advance your sword techniques.😁 there is a lot of movement & action so be prepared to work physically. Recommend this to anyone. It’s not all about how to fight but about how to live. Something I will remember for a long time. Thank you Daichi

You don’t start by holding a sword. You start by understanding where kendo comes from, and why the spirit of Japan lives within it. Etiquette and Respect Before training, you calm your mind and bow. Not as a formality, but as a way to face others with respect. Ki – Spirit You learn how samurai express their presence and fighting spirit, not through anger, but through focused intent. Tai – Body You practice traditional footwork that keeps the body grounded, balanced, and ready. Ken – Sword Only then do you learn how to hold the sword, how to swing it, and how to move with it. Ki-Ken-Tai-Itchi Spirit, sword, and body come together. This is the foundation of a true samurai strike. Match You put everything into practice in a real kendo match. Those with courage may challenge a veteran kendo instructor and feel the pressure up close. Demonstration Watch an intense match between instructors and witness the power and control of real kendo. Closing Etiquette After training together, everyone bows once more, carrying respect until the very end.

Initially, I planned to book a different experience, but it sold out. Airbnb offered Kendo Spirit as an alternative, and I’m honestly so thankful the original experience sold out because I would have missed such a rich and memorable experience with instructor Daichi! Taking this two-hour class was one of the top highlights of my Japan itinerary. We learned about the way of the samurai and the art of the sword, along with the deeper essence of Japanese culture. As a slow beginner, I had so much fun learning Japanese words, footwork, striking techniques, and sparring. As someone who is a lover, not a fighter, I definitely had to adjust to the idea of striking my instructor, but it was all part of the experience and absolutely worthwhile! Beyond the swings and strikes, it’s really about discipline, focus, and intention. The experience even inspired me to take a more introspective look at my own discipline and personal growth. I may not be a fighter, but I would absolutely take this class again! Daichi is skilled, knowledgeable, and thorough. It was the little details, his thoughtful instruction, and the personal touches throughout the class that made the experience feel so warm and special. If you’re visiting Japan and looking for something more meaningful than a typical tourist activity, I highly recommend Kendo Spirit. It’s not just about learning to wield a sword; it’s about gaining a deeper appreciation for the culture, discipline, and spirit behind it. 10 out of 10!
I had a fantastic experience learning Kendo! Sensei Daichi was extremely friendly, professional, and patient throughout the entire session. Not only did we get hands-on experience with traditional martial arts moves, but he also explained the spirit of Kendo and Japanese culture in a way that was engaging and easy to understand. If you’re looking to try something unique and memorable during your trip to Japan, experiencing the Kendo spirit with Sensei Daichi is an absolute must!
I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. He is genuinely passionate swnoit his craft. Extremely interesting, informative, and engaging. I felt the spirit of the craft.
The experience at Kendo Spirit was wonderful. This is not a quick touristy experience but rather a serious (but fun) comprehensive lesson about Kendo, its history, cultural importance and spirituality. There were 7 of us ranging in age from 20s to 60s, showing that it's an experience accessible to all ages. The class was done in a way that gave everyone the opportunity to learn each move slowly and then incorporate it all for a battle at the end.
An absolutely fantastic experience at Kendo Spirit. Daichi was a brilliant instructor teaching both the tradition and physical elements of Kendo. Would definitely recommend this as an experience for anyone with even a passing interest in Japanese culture and martial arts.
My 7-year old and I went having no idea what to expect. It was wonderful from beginning to end. Before the lesson, emails were sent to make sure they had the right size uniforms for us and very clear instructions with photos of where the studio is located. The lesson itself was so much fun! We had an informative introduction to the history and values and then a great lesson on the essential movements. Both instructors were very patient with my kid and supportive. We both recommend this experience and would definitely try it again!
This is an amazing experience. It’s something I wouldn’t normally do, as completely out of my comfort zone. I am so glad I did. It was very educational as well as practical and helps you understand the concept behind the art. Well worth a go, you won’t regret the experience.
My son love the experience Was amazing The teacher explained very good Amazing teacher
Both the sensei and his colleague were very professional, yet friendly and approachable. We learnt a great deal about this martial art, and it has opened the way for us to continue studying it in the future. I highly recommend this authentic experience and insight into Japanese traditions.
This was a great experience. In the 2 hours you are learning, you will come away with a great understanding of the history, meaning and discipline it takes to practice Kendo. I never dod this before and was not overwhelmed. The instructor and his assistant tookngood care of the class.
One of the best experiences i had in tokyo i learned a lot from it i strongly recommend
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Kendo Spirit in Tokyo, and it was truly unforgettable. The most memorable part for me was delving into the rich history behind Kendo. It added so much depth to the experience, making it more than just a physical activity. Participating in the session offered a unique insight into Japanese culture, especially the spirit of Bushido. The instructors were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly welcoming, guiding us with patience and enthusiasm. I appreciated the focus on etiquette and the deeper meaning behind each movement. One of the key takeaways for me was the technique. The hands-on approach made it easy to grasp the basics, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the art. Overall, Kendo Spirit provides an authentic and enriching cultural experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo. It's a perfect blend of learning and immersion, offering a glimpse into a fascinating aspect of Japanese heritage.
I recently experienced Kendo Spirit in Tokyo. From the moment I stepped into the dojo, I felt a very respectful and clean atmosphere. The instructors were very knowledgeable, patient and skilled. We learned about the history of kendo, practiced drills for moving and attacking and then we were able to try some matching. I appreciated the etiquette that surrounds kendo and the spirit of Bushido felt in the dojo. I highly recommend Kendo Spirit to anyone visiting Tokyo. It’s a wonderful introduction to the history and culture of kendo.
Having practiced martial arts for many years, I felt that this dojo had a serious and clean feeling. I can advise anyone interested in learning a bit about kendo to book a lesson here.
I had an outstanding experience with this kendo class. The instructor was knowledgeable, patient, and created a welcoming environment for all. Highly recommend to anyone of all ages looking for Japanese culture, movement and education. It was such a memorable experience! Very thankful for this opportunity.
Great experience, great teacher very clear great English and a great journey though the history of kendo learning the basics and some fun duels to finish. 10/10
We went with our family. Daichi was an amazing instructor. He really motivated everyone to fully immerse in the training and experience. He was attentive and thorough even with our youngest ones. Everyone thought this was an amazing experience and the kids (who live in Japan) kept asking when we can do it again.
I had a great experience at Kendo Spirit. From a 2 years experienced Kendoka's view, I can see the effort and thought Daichi-san and his team have put into creating this educational session. Showing people the way of how Kendo work is not easy but they did great to breakdown of the concepts behind both Kendo and Bushido, and relating deeply back to it cultural history - Love the phase "Rei ni hajimari, rei ni owaru", this concept explains much of how Japan society work. The 2 hour time flew by quickly as I enjoyed so much. I would highly recommended those who haven't tried kendo before to go, as the breakdown was simple and easy to understand, a great way to exposure yourself toward what kendo is. P.S. Shiai-Keiko with Daichi san was wonderful too
One of the best experiences you could ever do if I visiting Tokyo/Japan! Such an immersive, insightful and engaging lesson in the spirit of Kendo, learning about the history and the connection to mind, body & soul. Daichi our instructor was incredibly gracious and helpful, taking the skills learnt and getting to actually face off with him 1 on 1 was such an experience! They make everyone and anyone feel welcome and I would highly recommend anyone looking to immerse themselves more in the culture to try this out, if returning to Japan I would definitely do again! Very appreciative of their time, efforts and memories to walk away with.
Samurai Experience was amazing. They were patient and fun. Our family enjoyed our time with them.
My husband wanted to do this experience, so I went with him. It turned out to be a really excellent tour. We were the only two participants with the instructor and two assistants (one taking pictures and videos). Everything was on time from start to finish. We really enjoyed the teaching of the history and culture of kendo. Then of course you get to participate in full equipment the contact of the sport. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone, but I think a family could really benefit from this wonderful hands-on experience. We did this a few months ago and are still talking about how much we enjoyed this tour.
Great family activity!! The instructor was great and I enjoyed learning the history of Kendo
Our instructor, Daichi, did an amazing job going over the history of Kendo and the reasoning behind practicing. He was absolutely delightful. This was a highlight of our Japan trip and I highly recommend. I would love to come back and study the skills and philosophy more. It inspired me to take what I've learned and incorporate it into our fencing classes back home. Both of my teens (and husband) also enjoyed. It has been my son's favorite thing we've done while on our trip. (Plus, they also take photos and video for you.) Thank you for encouraging others in "The Way of the Sword".
I had an amazing experience at Kendo Spirit and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in kendo, whether you’re a complete beginner or already experienced. The atmosphere was welcoming, professional, and serious in the best way possible. Daichi-san was an incredible teacher. His presence is calm yet strong, and you can immediately feel the intensity and pressure he brings during sparring. Even while matching that pressure, he was still very kind and patient, showing me clear targets and openings during our practice match so I could learn in the moment. It was one of those experiences where you can physically feel the difference that comes from true skill and experience. His teaching was clear, thoughtful, and easy to understand, and he created an environment where I felt challenged while still encouraged to improve. Beyond being a great instructor, he’s also a genuinely kind person. I learned a lot from this experience and left with an even deeper appreciation for kendo.
If you want to experience REAL Kendo . . . and not a tourist-trap imitation . . . THIS IS the Kendo Experience that you want! The experience includes a little history and philosophy lesson. By understanding the cultural background of Kendo, you can embrace and experience the Kendo training - more fully. (as opposed to mindlessly swinging the shinai (Kendo sword). Then, it is time for training of the Mind Body and Spirit . . . the majority of the time. The instructor spoke perfectly fluent English, and the team was very patient and meticulous in their instruction. It is a safe and fun environment to get a great experience. One of the best memories of the Japan visit!
I had a fun time learning the history and teachings of kendo. Getting geared up was a bit difficult but I was helped and had an amazing experience being the only student that day. I had the time of my life playing around with the Shinai (bamboo sword) and getting to do practice matches with the instructor. Of course I was no match against someone with 20 years experience but the point of Kendo or rather any sport is not to win but to grow as a person. I would definitely do this again so I can gain more experience and confidence with my sword technique. Anyone who loves swords and action I can recommend this lesson to you.
This was a really fun thing to do. Takes a little effort as they gear you up in the full outfit so you can have a sparring match but if you don’t mind just a little effort and want to experience a sparring match with bamboo swords then this will be fun while giving you just a little knowledge and insight into the practice.
The Kendo experience was one of the best decision for our trip to Japan! The kindness, respect and passion that Daichi and his other instructor exuded was legendary. We simply loved the experience and plan to not only tell our friends about it but go there
Very good kendo introduction in 2 h and in the end you could challenge the sensei with genuine kendo armor. This one was good in many ways for a first-timer. Budo-background helps. This was very well organised and tutored. The sensei was very good at this role.
Kendo Spirit was a wonderful experience. The instructors were super nice and skilled at their job. The whole experience was authentic and well planned, and adjusted to the participants.
Great experiance! Perfect introduction. Fun and challanging. Kind and skilled instructor. I highly recomend this for you Tokyo visit.
This is a must in your Japan travel
Very fun and instructive session! This is as much as you can expect for a 2 hours introduction to Kendo!
Very fun experience! I particularly enjoyed the sparing battles at the end!
The experience was was great. I would recommend. Very friendly and and knowledgeable of kendo. I highly recommend
Great experience. I learned alot of the history and spirit of Kendo. I highly recommend.
Excellent and authentic martial arts experience in Tokyo! I highly recommend this course! Daichi and Makoto were great instructors! They did great explaining and sharing their knowledge of Kendo. The course starts with Kendo knowledge and progresses to the culmination where you get to engage in Kendo sparring matches!

Daichi and Makoto were excellent guides throughout. The entire activity was great, from learning the basics and history of Kendo to practicing with the practice swords. The photos and videos were nice and they didn't feel intrusive during the lessons. If you want to get a taste of Kendo culture this is an excellent place to try it out. Arigato Gozaimasu.
I’ve tried many cultural activities in Japan, but this felt truly different. Wearing real kendo armor and stepping into training made me feel like I was experiencing something authentic, not just watching it. Through the movements and etiquette, I felt a real connection to Japanese culture. I’d definitely recommend this to friends visiting Japan and anyone who loves martial arts. Your review means a lot to us, and it helps more people around the world discover the true spirit of Kendo. Thank you so much for your support.
Even for a newbie, it was a wonderful experience, learning about some history, traditions and kendo.
“It was very interesting and unique. It’s an amazing sport that really gets your adrenaline pumping. Thanks to the skilled coach and the team, I was able to learn many things.”
The experience was wonderful. They're English was good and the sword play was worth it! The only caviate I can say is that to get all the videos and pictures you need to leave a 5 star review.
This was a fun experience. A nice break from all the sightseeing to do something more active. Daichi and Makoto were great at explaining and teaching Kendo techniques and the mental/spiritual aspect of Kendo. There’s a chance to spar with other participants and the instructor at the end of the session. A very enjoyable, unique, and authentic experience! More details: level of activity is light, kendo armor/uniform is provided, there’s a changing area if you want to bring a change of clothes (we brought an extra shirt but didn’t need it). Water is provided as well but you can bring your own if you want.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my husband and it was 100% worth it. He managed to get a 1 on 1 class with the instructors and was able to spend the whole time practicing. They were both very knowledgeable and patient, even with a loud baby shouting along. The sparring was so fun to watch and my husband enjoyed every second of it. Great work out and great entertainment for those watching.
I had a great time as a complete beginner who does not speak Japanese. It was a pleasant experience learning various aspects of kendo. Staff was professional and helpful. Very beginner friendly. I recommend to anyone visiting Tokyo!
Very informative. Very involved. Very interesting and fun. It was amazing to watch these guys do the samurai training and to actually be involved in the training
Please don’t skip this one! Absolutely phenomenal experience, and one of my all time favorite things to have done while traveling, and I travel a lot :) Daichi and Makoto are incredibly knowledgeable, kind, encouraging, and fun. They are themselves skilled kendo practitioners from childhood, and their love for kendo is reflected in their program that they’ve meticulously crafted. You get a seamless blend of cultural learning and firsthand practice/experience with very careful (and high energy) instruction. Bonus: they also take amazing photos to help document memories, and this makes for a great workout to complement all the good food in Tokyo
