Itinerary
Tatsumi Yagura, also known as Sakurada Nijū Yagura, is a historic two-story watchtower located in the Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo. Built during the Edo period, it is one of the few surviving structures of the original Edo Castle, reflecting Japan’s feudal past. Positioned at the southeast corner of the old inner moat, it once served both symbolic and defensive roles. Though the interior is closed to the public, the tower can be viewed from nearby paths in the Imperial Palace East Gardens—a favorite for photographers and history lovers exploring Tokyo sightseeing spots.
One of the most iconic views of the Imperial Palace, the double-arched Nijūbashi Bridge gracefully spans the moat and serves as the main approach to the inner grounds. Beloved for its elegant stone structure and photogenic scenery, it is a must-see highlight for visitors exploring central Tokyo.
The Imperial Palace East Gardens, open to the public, sit on the former grounds of Edo Castle in Tokyo. The area features stone walls, gates, seasonal flowers, and traditional Japanese landscaping. A key highlight is the Tenshudai (castle keep foundation), offering views of the gardens and a sense of the shogunate’s historic scale. Visitors can also see preserved sites like Otemon Gate and Hyakunin-bansho. Perfect for Tokyo sightseeing, the East Gardens provide a peaceful escape for history lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
The Imperial Palace is the residence of the Emperor of Japan and a major Tokyo landmark, located in Chiyoda Ward. Once the site of Edo Castle, it features moats, stone walls, and the beautiful Imperial Palace East Gardens. Visitors can admire highlights like the Nijubashi Bridge, Tatsumi Yagura, and Sakurada Gate. Despite being in the city center, the area offers a quiet escape and a chance to connect with Japanese history and tradition. A guided tour offers deeper insight into the palace's history, architecture, and cultural significance — perfect for a meaningful Tokyo sightseeing experience.

Shimon was a great tour guide! He knew about everything in the palace and was great at explaining the history of Japan as well.
Dai was a great tour guide, and was very informative about the Imperial Gardens! We went on Sunday morning, so there wasn’t a lot of people there.
It was the best experience and very nice
Yuma is very knowledgeable and showed us all the cool spots
Great experience, recommend it for others.
Despite a rainy day, Yuragi, led a knowledgeable tour of the Imperial Palace and gardens!
I was lucky to be the only guest on the tour, which made the experience even more special. The 90 minutes were very meaningful and informative. I learned a lot about the history of Edo Castle, the gardens, and many interesting details and background stories along the way. Masa was very knowledgeable about history, spoke excellent English, and was highly professional throughout the tour. Highly recommended!
We did a walking tour and the guide moved at our pace, which was wonderful. He gave us a lot of information
Excellent tour. We learned so much. The day we went it was raining but the tour was still great!! Highly recommend!
We had an excellent time on our tour with Yumi today. She knew so much about the palace, gardens and history and it was all very interesting. Yumi was happy to answer our many questions. You can go around the palace gardens for free, but so glad we went with a tour from Yumi because we learned so much. Thank you for a fantastic time.
Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. She was very enthusiastic, even in the pouring rain. Great time!
Hiroshi was a wonderful guide! He gave us a lot of information about the history of the Imperial Palace. He was also flexible regarding our time and he took lots of great family photos! I highly recommend this tour!
Very knowledgeable and nice enough to answer questions and very friendly.
Guide Hina. Very knowledgeable and informative.
My family and I had a wonderful time and learned so much! Taku and Ken were so knowledgeable about the history and culture of the Imperial Palace, we all felt that we got so much more out of our visit than we would have just exploring on our own. Their insights were unmatched!
Very friendly and personable guide. It was a great experience! Would recommend!
Even though the palace was closed Sofi made the tour very interesting and informative. She was very helpful with details about Tokyo
We had a fantastic time on this tour. Hiroshi was excellent, his English was perfect and he was both knowledgeable and personable. We would recommend this to anyone visiting Japan. 10/10!
We had a great tour with Taku, and learned a lot of interesting history. My son uses a wheelchair and we were able to take a route with the wheelchair that worked well.
Fantastic tour with our knowledgeable and super-pleasant guide Muto Hina gave us a peak into the Edo period of Japanese history. Comfortable walking pace among gardens and ponds allowed for quiet reflection. We really enjoyed our time at the Imperial Palace!
Stepping into the Imperial Palace East Gardens in December is like entering a serene, historical sanctuary. This tour offers a relaxed yet deeply informative experience, providing a captivating glimpse into Japan's rich imperial history juxtaposed with the stunning beauty of the winter foliage. Our guide, Takumi, is truly exceptional. He is a fascinating individual with a wide breadth of global travel and a nuanced understanding of various cultures and viewpoints. This makes his explanations incredibly engaging and easy to relate to, regardless of your background. The journey begins with an insightful introduction to the palace's history. As you pass through the entrance, Takumi transforms the grounds into a living narrative. He expertly shares intriguing stories, fascinating small details, and illuminates how the traditions of Japanese culture from the past continue to beautifully resonate in the modern era. This is an essential tour for anyone seeking to understand the heart of Japan's heritage and enjoy a moment of tranquil beauty right in the center of Tokyo.
Takumi was very fun to have showing around the area has a while history chart to show for it and explains very well the goat
I had a morning alone in Tokyo and I’m so glad I did this tour. The gardens were beautiful, it was easy to find the group, and Takumi was knowledgeable, interesting, and very accommodating. Lots of walking on uneven surfaces but you could skip most of those parts.
Our tour operator Hinna was absolutely amazing! Can’t say enough wonderful things about the experience!! She was full of information and fun facts!
Highly recommend this tour. Beautiful grounds. I loved the trees representing each prefecture and the Japanese garden and pong of fishes. The guide is very informative.
Great tour of the the 2hr tour of the imperial palace Takumi was very informative and made sure to explain things in detail He's very friendly and accommodating. He was also willing to take lots of pictures which I appreciate as a solo traveler. Definitely would recommend to others
The gardens are a peaceful space in the midst of Tokyo. It’s interesting to learn more about a period of history although architecturally not much is left there so it is more about enjoying the gardens and hearing about the history.
My wife and I joined this tour and loved walking through the Imperial Palace while learning about its fascinating history. We gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, and it was such a rewarding experience! The guide was friendly, approachable, and made the tour really enjoyable!
It was a wonderful, educational, and fun tour! The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly in conversation. We were able to explore at our own pace without feeling rushed. Highly recommended!
Taku, our guide, was truly amazing! He was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions carefully. He even recommended some great restaurants, which made our time after the tour even more enjoyable.
Takumi was an extremely professional and wonderful guide. At the beginning of the tour, he gave a detailed explanation of the day’s itinerary and essential background using clear and visually engaging slides. Thanks to his well-organized presentation, even those without prior knowledge could easily immerse themselves in the experience. We then walked toward Nijubashi Bridge, enjoying his explanations and taking photos along the way. Next, we visited the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, where Takumi shared not only the historical and cultural background of each site but also interesting trivia that made the tour full of learning and discovery. His deep knowledge and professional guidance made us feel as if we had stepped back in time to the era when samurai once lived. Walking along the same paths that samurai trod hundreds of years ago was truly awe-inspiring, and the whole experience felt deeply immersive. This tour is highly recommended not only for first-time visitors to Japan but also for those who already have a strong interest in Japanese culture. With Takumi’s extensive knowledge and passionate guidance, you are sure to have a wonderful experience filled with new discoveries.
Given the location, I was expecting a rather formal and dry explanation of history, but Takumi-san's tour was completely different! It wasn't just about memorizing dates and events. He provided unique explanations that made us feel the stories and the people behind them, like "why is this gate in this specific location?" or "what were the feelings of the people who piled these stones?" He was full of fascinating trivia not found in textbooks, and it was exciting just to listen. It was truly a precious experience filled with stories "you couldn't hear anywhere else." What was even more wonderful was Takumi-san's hospitality. Throughout the tour, he constantly paid attention to our walking pace and showed great consideration, saying things like, "The sun is strong, so let's walk in the shade here," or "You can get a beautiful photo from this angle." He also had a very engaging way of speaking, occasionally mixing in humor while talking about history, which allowed us to relax and enjoy the entire tour. He answered every question thoroughly and politely, and I was deeply impressed by his profound knowledge and sincere personality. Thanks to Takumi-san, I didn't just "see" the Imperial Palace; I gained a deep sense of satisfaction from "experiencing and understanding" it. If I ever have the chance to request a guide again, whether at the Imperial Palace or elsewhere, I would absolutely want to ask for Takumi-san. He is the best guide I can wholeheartedly recommend!
This tour was very educational. We learned so much about the history and things we would never have known just by walking around on our own. I joined with my husband, who loves history, and we were both extremely satisfied. The guide was kind, friendly, and made the tour really enjoyable!
Taku was an incredibly knowledgeable and amazing guide! He shared detailed insights into the history and culture of Japan, and answered all our questions thoughtfully. I highly recommend this tour when visiting the Imperial Palace!
Very friendly and knowledgeable knew his area expertise and would use him again. We walked around the imperial palace and had a guided tour
Alex is a great guide. Very informative and super friendly. Always made sure he answered our questions, provided historical facts and even provides restaurant dining suggestions. Amazing Tour
Very enjoyable, both for the knowledge and the scenery. Our guide was generous with his knowledge and time. Highly recommend!
Taku was a wonderful guide for our tour. He was well versed in the history of Japan and the castle. We were most fortunate to have him. The best tour we took in Tokyo !
Had a fantastic time. Informative and with plenty of information. Guide showed up on time and was friendly and chatty throughout. The guide and tour never felt rushed and even though it was supposed to last two hours it went to more like two and a half. Excellent recommendations for food and other things to do in and around Tokyo too.
We had a fantastic tour with Julio. He made our experience unique and provided interesting historical and cultural insights. Highly recommend :)
Haruto showed us Japan beyond the guidebooks. Every stop felt authentic, with stories that touched our hearts.
Amazing, very interesting, informative tour, not only highlighting the beauty of the imperial palace, but also the Imperial garden. Our guide was very friendly and helpful, explained the historical background, shared many fascinating facts and answered all of our questions. We are very thankful for your assistance ❤️
excelente experiencia, totalmente recomendable. Mika fui muy simpatica y amable y nos explico todo con mucha paciencia, totalmente recomendable
The tour was very entertaining. We learned a lot about the history of the castle. Highly recommended experience. The guide was a 10!
Excellent Tour by Mika. Highly recommended
Perfect experience! Keiji is an excellent guide with great care and knowledge of the history and traditions of the Imperial Palace.
Unfortunately, the guide does not perfect French. In Japanese, with live translation via Siri, no better results. Finally, I will read the samurai story on Wikipedia. As for the park, nothing exceptional. It is a public garden with lawns, water rooms and palace walls.
We had our long-planned tour today with local guide Ken from Tokyo. Was a very pleasant tour despite language barriers. Ken went to great lengths and a great advantage, we started already at 9.00 am. Can I only recommend seeing the sights as early as possible, as more and more tourists came. Thanks again from this side to Ken.
We spent with Hina two extremely pleasant hours. Having had his guide dedicated only to our small group (4 people) was a great added value that allowed us to deepen not only issues related to our visit, but also to benefit from a human contact and cultural exchange that, in the trip, are always moments of great enrichment. Hina is a trained guide, very attentive and of great delicacy of mind, but also very helpful. Experience absolutely recommended!
